Watchman, what of the night? Isaiah 21:11

Watchman, what of the night? Isaiah 21:11

Isa 21:11-12 The burden of Dumah. One calleth unto me out of Seir, Watchman, what of the
night? Watchman, what of the night? (12) The watchman said, The morning cometh, and also
the night: if ye will inquire, inquire ye: turn ye, come.
Dumah (silence) was the fourth son of Ishmael; and the place is in Edom: Seir a mountain
inhabited by the Edomites, the posterity of Esau
Watchman(sentinel/guard): duty: To declare what he sees: For thus hath the Lord said unto me,
Go, set a watchman; let him declare what he seeth: Isaiah 21: 6
What is the duty of a watchman? What role does he play?
Eze_3:17 Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the
word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.
Eze 33:2-9 Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring
the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their coasts, and set him for their
watchman: (3) If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn
the people; (4) Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if
the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. (5) He heard the
sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh
warning shall deliver his soul. (6) But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the
trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among
them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand. (7)
So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt
hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me.
God has set us as Watchman on the walls of Zion, before he brings the sword upon the land:
before the sword of AIDS is sent God sents you to warn about adultery and promiscuity
Before irreverence sets in God says remind his people of the sacredness of the Sabbath
Before the sword of disease kills the masses warn them that their bodies are the temple
of God
I HAVE SET THEE A WATCHMAN unto the house of Israel!
God foreseeing the perilous times ahead of us 2Ti_3:1 This know also, that in the last days
perilous times shall come
He appoints you and me as watchmen unto Israel. Are you doing your part
Watchman, blow the trumpet and warn the people.
Watchman warn the people of the imminent Godlessness, lack of love, faithlessness
Greed, pride, vanity, unfaithfulness
Joe 2:1 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the
inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand;
I HAVE SET THEE A WATCHMAN unto the house of Swazis!

Watchman, what of the night? A question put by an Edomite to the watchman. Some one or
other called out of Seir, somebody that was more concerned for the public safety and welfare
than the rest, who were generally careless and secure
It is put to a proper person, the watchman, whose office it is to answer such enquiries. He
repeats the question, as one in care, as one in earnest, and desirous to have an answer:
Watchman, what of the night?
Often times when we are confronted with such critical questions, we shy off. I am not too sure
whether it is humility (not wanting to show off our knowledge of the times) or it is pride and
selfishness or it is lack of knowledge of the times
The were no watches in these days and people relied on the watchman for time during the night,
because they DID NOT SLEEP and hence kept track of how much time has moved
In a similar fashion, there are no watches showing to the minute timeframe of Christs coming
as watchmen for Christ we should not sleep during this time of night but to keep track of the
time.
By looking at the rising and setting of stars as waymarks of the night progression we are to keep
track of times movement in the night.
Those who grew up in the rural areas know how you can tell time without by using stars, when
you see the Orion you know that its about 4am and the day is about to come
The watchman answers by way of prophecy. There comes first a morning of light, and
peace, and opportunity; but afterward comes a night of trouble and calamity.
He seems to say: The morning cometh, : better times are coming brethren Psa_30:5 weeping
may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning
Gleams of the Golden morning are we seeing the gleam of the Golden morning
But again he is quick to caution: and also the night
If there be a morning of youth and health, there will come a night of sickness and old age; if
a morning of prosperity in the family, in the public, yet we must look for changes. It is our
wisdom to improve the present morning, in preparation for the night that is coming after it.
God's prophets and ministers are as watchmen They are as watchmen in the city in a time of
peace, to see that all be safe, to knock at every door by personal enquiries (Is it locked? Is the
fire safe?), to direct those that are at a loss, and check those that are disorderly.
It is our God-sent duty to make sure every household is safe in the truth, to encourage those
is grief, and to call to order those that are misbehaving.
As watchmen in the camp in time of war, to warn of the motions of the enemy. After a long
sleep in sin and security, it is time to rise, to awake out of sleep.
We are duty bound to make discoveries and then give warning; and in this we must deny
themselves. We have a great deal of work to do, a long journey to go; it is time to be stirring.
If ye will enquire, enquire ye: return, come.
After a long dark night is there any hope of the day dawning? What tidings of the night?
What happens to-night?

We are urged to do it quickly, for there is no time to trifle. Those that return and come to
God, will find they have a great deal of work to do, and but little time to do it in.
We must never be secure. Lets make curious inquiries of the watchmen.
Some willingly have nice questions solved, or difficult prophecies interpreted; but they do not
seek into the state of their own souls, about the way of salvation, and the path of duty

WATCHMAN WHAT OF THE NIGHT?

Rom 13:11-12 And this, knowing the season, that now it is high time for you to awake out of
sleep: for now is salvation nearer to us than when we first believed. (12) The night is far spent,
and the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the
armour of light.
