The Talisman

From the ACLS President

Richard Lockhart [#075] of Northeast Ohio

From the President of ACLS

By Richard Lockhart (#075) of Northeast Ohio
Greetings from Northeast Ohio!
I hope all of you had a wonderful Holiday Season and are looking forward to the
New Year. Colleen and I had a full house as our children and their spouses came
home for Christmas and we got to spend time with our grandchildren Jack and Rose. This was Roses first
Christmas.
Have you made your New Years resolutions yet? I have and this year I added a couple for ACLS. My
personal resolutions are the same as last year. I just dusted off 2014s list and hope I can accomplish them
this year. For ACLS I am committed to work hard in growing our membership and hosting and attending
more Scottish Festivals. In addition, would love to see an ACLS clan tent at Grandfather Mountain as well as
one of the Texas games, The Pacific Northwest and California.

ACLS is beginning the 13th year as an organization and it is the hope of the board and
other members that we continue on as strong as we have in the past. I am proud to
say that we are doing well and this is in part due to the efforts of your ACLS board
members and all of your support. Our mission as The American Clan Lockhart
Society is to be an organization in which you can really feel and be a part of. By
presenting you with opportunities to participate in your heritage, to interact with
others like yourself who are searching for their roots, to share ideas, travel, host and
or attend games. I know from personal experience that when you get involved it can
be a very exciting and gratifying experience.
Its that time of year to renew your membership and if you have already done so
THANK YOU! With your support, ACLS is able to continue our mission of
preserving and promoting the customs, traditions and heritage of the Lockhart family
name.

Last year was an election year and as of January 1, 2015, you have a couple of new board members. I would
like to welcome Zane Walls as your new Vice President and Games Chairman and Richard E. Lockhart as
your new Secretary. I know both Zane and Richard will do an excellent job. I ask that you please give them
your continued support and let them hear from you from time to time. As we welcome new board members, I
would like to take this opportunity to thank the board members and members who have committed to stay on
for another term: Linda Wilson, Daniel Lockhart, Natalie Lockhart, Colleen Lockhart, Robert Ryder and Tim
Lockhart THANK YOU!
Thanks to William (Bill) Lockhart for his past service to the group as your Vice President and Games
Chairman. Bills hard work, insight, enthusiasm and humor will be missed.
Thanks to Carol Cichocki for her work as your Secretary for the past five years. She has done an excellent
job in maintaining and keeping our groups records organized and accurate. Her insight, leadership and input
have been a big reason for our Societys success.
ACLS is a better organization for having Bill and Carol serve and we all hope to continue to hear from them
and see them at upcoming Scottish Festivals!
Please review the various board and committee reports, included in this newsletter, that were submitted at
last years AGM which was held at Stone Mountain. We had a very nice turnout of members and friends
who attended our AGM. Many contributed excellent thoughts and ideas of how we can make ACLS grow in
strength and membership. We had a very open and fruitful meeting.
The board has not made a decision on if, where, and when we may hold our 2015 AGM; however, we are
considering the idea of conducting our AGM meeting via conference call-in whereby you could receive
reports and participate without travelling. We would still hold an annual ACLS gathering at one of the major
highland games with the main focus on fellowship and FUN! Please contact me or one of the other board
members with your thoughts.
Please be thinking about how you can help and contribute to the group. I look forward to seeing you in the
coming year.
Yours aye,
Richard Lockhart

From the Vice-President

Zane Walls [#136] of S. Central PA

This is my first correspondence to you as your newly-elected VP/Games Chairperson. I

hope all is well. There are some exciting things happening within the ACLS ranks. I am
in the process of expanding the number of games we attend each year so that we can
expand the Clan Lockhart influence to more parts of the USA and abroad. I would like to streamline the
games process and introduce a level of conformity to how we go about attending and showcasing the ACLS

Page 3

ACLS Talisman

Volume 13 Issue 1

at each games attended. I would like to know who might be interested in hosting games this year or if you
might know of any games that you would like to see us host a clan tent.
I also have an update on the social media project I've been working on now for over a year. It's been a slow
process, but I've got several accounts on many social media platforms. You may continue to follow the
ACLS on Facebook, Google +, Tartan Footprint, Twitter, or YouTube. Just search for the ACLS on any one
of these social media websites and you will see what the ACLS is up to. If you know of any other social
media sites that the ACLS should become a part of, please let me know and I can look into it. Also if you
have any other questions regarding the ACLS social media project or games, please contact me as well.
I implore our active members to become more active in the ACLS. The ACLS is much more fulfilling if
involved and the best way of doing so is hosting a clan tent. If you have any questions or concerns, just
email me. My inbox is always open. I would also like to ask all the active members to actively search for
new Lockharts and members. This is very important to get new and young blood into our ranks and grow
our numbers.
For those inactive members that are receiving the ACLS newsletter, I would like to see all of you get your
memberships up-to-date. This will help us stabilize our membership and make it easier for us to recruit new
members and attend more games throughout the USA and abroad.
With your help we can make 2015 the best year yet for the ACLS.

Lee Castle drawn in 1830 by John Preston Neale

Lee Castle in the Valley of Clyde (from http://www.scotland.com)

With an intriguing history spanning close to seven centuries and located in the charming Valley of Clyde
countryside, Lee Castle is listed as a building of regional importance (category B) on the Statutory List of
Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. Also referred to simply as The Lee, the property on
which this magnificent mansion stands was the seat of the Lockharts of Lee from 1297 until the year 1919,
although the current structure is the result of renovations and additions carried out during the 19th century.

Colleen Lockhart [#075] of Northeast Ohio

Message to Clan Hosts from the Storekeeper

Although we are in the middle of winter in NE Ohio, now is the time to start thinking
about hosting a tent and getting ready to promote the ACLS. The photos in the July
and October Talisman show our t-shirts, polo shirts, and stuffed animals available
from the ACLS. Look at the website for the badge and kilt pins and other items.
Some can be shipped from stock and some must be ordered. If the festival you are
hosting does not permit sales unless they represent the ACLS, we can add a bit of Lockhart tartan as a show
of colors.
For new hosts, or if you are considering becoming a host, I can send you items to display in your tent,
including photos of the Lee Castle, Lockhart tartans, Chief Angus, and the Crest. Please let me or our VP,
Zane Walls, know that you need them when you sign up.
If you want individual photos of the items, I can forward them to you, along with an order form. Just e-mail
me with questions and we can work on getting you some inventory for 2015!

From the Newsletter Editor

Linda Wilson [#126] of Chattanooga, Tennessee
I want to thank those of you who donated to the welfare of the recently-orphaned
children of Candy and Randall Lockhart of Chattanooga, TN. You will remember
from the e-mail I sent, the Lockhart parents lost their lives in a horrible house fire,
leaving three children ages 10 and younger. They are now being raised by Mrs.
Lockharts parents.
Our treasurer, genealogist, and webmaster, Daniel Lockhart, is suffering from a crushed finger on his right
hand. Daniel, Im sending up prayers that it will heal speedily; not only to alleviate your pain, but also so we
can enjoy the articles you submit.
Out-going (in more ways than one) Vice-President Bill Lockhart, I hope you continue to send articles of
interest for publication. Your sense of humor has kept me laughing, even when it was at my own expense as
you make fun of my Southern drawl. Carol Cichocki, I also want to thank you for all the help you have
given me.
I need recommendations for the Meet a Lockhart article. If you know of a Lockhart you think we should
pay homage to, please let me know.

ACLS Annual General Meeting, Stone Mountain, GA

submitted by Jessica Daniel (#103 of LaVergne,TN)

The ACLS held its annual general meeting at the Stone

Mountain Highland Games in Stone Mountain, Georgia
October 17-19. This was the 42nd anniversary of the games.
This is a beautiful setting for the games as the tents are
scattered throughout the pine trees. Our booth is beside
Entertainment Stage #1 so we had wonderful music all day
long from Jasper Coal and Rathkeltair. There were many
vendors with extensive offerings of Gaelic and Celtic
clothing and products. Our Guest of Honor was Lorne
Gillean Iain Maclaine The Maclaine of Lochbuie and
Angus Maclaine: Younger of Lochbuie.
This was the 3rd year the ACLS tent was hosted by members Jessica Daniel, Mable Cochran and Helen
Thomas. There were 99 clans in attendance and we had absolutely beautiful weather both days. They moved
the childrens area this year from behind us to across the park, but that didnt stop us from selling our ACLS
merchandise.
We welcome our new members who signed up at the games: Justin and Adrienne Rhodes. Thank you for
visiting and joining ACLS at the Stone Mountain Highland Games!
Our booth was also visited by the following prospective
members: Jordan Munday, Jenna Munday, Sangha Park, Nadia
Hernandez, Kevin Brannen and Vi Hunter. So glad you stopped
by the ACLS tent and visited with us. Our guests enjoyed
looking at our booth especially the Lee Castle pictures.
The following members attended the ACLS annual general
meeting: President Richard Lockhart, Winfred Lockhart Walls,
Zane Walls, Helen Thomas, Mable Cochran, Pat Walls, Justin
Rhodes, Adrienne Rhodes, Jessica Daniel, Linda and Jerry
Wilson. Jessica and Mable represented American Clan Lockhart
Society in the Parade of Tartans on Sunday.
We really enjoyed meeting our fellow ACLS members and hosting the games.

Lee Castle
(continued from page 3)
The Lockharts of Lee are a prominent family in Lanarkshire, Scotland, who can trace their ancestry to Sir
Simon Locard (1300-1371), a Scottish knight who fought in the Wars of Scottish Independence, and is said
to have traveled with Sir James Douglas in his unsuccessful attempt to carry the heart of Robert the Bruce to
the Holy Land. During a battle against the Moors in Spain, Sir James Douglas was killed and Sir Simon
Locard carried Robert the Bruce's heart back to Scotland, where it is buried at Melrose Abbey, and for this
deed he was granted the Lockhart arms and motto.
The Lockhart family continued to feature in Scottish history and politics through the years and Lee Castle
remained in the family until 1948, when it was sold with the feudal barony of Lee being transferred to the
new owner. After carrying out some restorations to the house it was sold in July 2004 to an unnamed
American buyer, with the feudal barony of Lee title being passed on to the new owner as part of the deal,
making him the 35th Baron of Lee by proclamation of the Court of the Lord Lyon.
Lee Castle stands on 261 acres of land, most of which is beautifully landscaped. The ancient oak in front of
the house, called the Pease Tree, is believed to be the spot where Robert the Bruce once signed a charter with
the English, and where Oliver Cromwell is later said to have dined. The castles vast collection of historic
and antique furniture and heirlooms remain in the building, which boasts fourteen bedrooms, two lodge
houses, a banqueting hall, enormous grand ballroom and a heated swimming pool.

The following are copies of the reports that were submitted at the 2014 ACLS Annual
General Meeting (AGM) that took place October 18, 2014 at the Stone Mountain
Highland Games.

Activities included a new item added: Meadow 8 Border collie that was sold out and will be reordered for
2015.
A new item awaiting comments from the Board are the Lockhart Crest T-shirts. A photo of t-shirts in each
color available of red, tan, natural was e-mailed to the Board. Cost has been reviewed and would be $15 for
youth small through adult XL. 2XL and larger would be $18.00. So far, no cost has been incurred by the
ACLS Rich and Colleen paid for the initial order of decals and t-shirts.
A new vendor has been found for the embroidered crest for the polo shirts. Initial investment is $8.00
each so the cost of the polo shirts will still allow us to make a profit.
When making shipments of any of the merchandise, we are charging actual shipping charges and not
charging for handling. The cost of shipping has increased and might prohibit sales.
During the year, photos of the current merchandise and merchandise that will not be reordered were
published in the Talisman.
The ACLS website needs updated. Colleen will work with webmaster, Daniel Lockhart.

Genealogy Report
No major changes this past year. Database saved from fire but no major research undertaken. Projects in
process for 2015 is an On-line version for members-only use that will use the ACLS website to host.

Webmaster Report
The site underwent a major upgrade on the operating system this year. This will allow the use of some of the
latest website design tools that previously were unavailable. We have done some testing in allowing nonmembers access to the general information on the website while having a restricted use area for members.
Goals of the restricted area for all members is to provide access to previous newsletters, genealogy database
(read-only), and additional articles not included in newsletter. Goal of the restricted area for board members
is to provide access to board documentation such as Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, and past Board
Minutes.
After discussion with the person hosting our environment, his recommendation is that we consider a
business solution where they handle all the backup and security issues. He would continue to assist in
maintaining our website as far as design and content but this would give us a more robust solution that would
address what happens if he passes away or has a total network failure. ~ $120 per year.

Items for consideration for 2015:

Bank of America has notified us that beginning 2015 we will incure a $10 monthly service charge on each of
our accounts that have less than $5000 balance. In the past we have been able to get a waiver due to our
non-profit status. No answer as of 13 Oct 2014 regarding getting another waiver for 2015. If unable, then
will investigate changing banks.

Social Media
In the fall of 2013 I received approval from the ACLS board to begin a social media project that aimed at revitalizing
the ACLS membership by using social media to reach out to the younger generations. I started out with a very simple
concept, the more people we reach, the more people that know about the ACLS, then the more potential we have for
more people becoming members.
I started out by creating a Facebook, Google +, and YouTube page for the ACLS. These three pages have been up
and running since the beginning of 2014. We have received many likes and many more people have viewed our
pages, so the ACLS is getting its name out there.
Just recently I have taken over the Clan Lockhart page on tartanfootprint.com and have created a Twitter account for
the ACLS. Both are still a work in progress but I encourage everyone to take a look.
In order to view these pages or accounts, please visit:
Facebook
Google +
YouTube
tartanfootprint.com
Twitter
Search for either ACLS, American Clan Lockhart Society, or Clan Lockhart and you should be directed to our page or
account.

Page 11

ACLS Talisman

Volume 13 Issue 1

If anyone has any suggestion or comments regarding our pages or accounts, please feel free to do so. I am open for
suggestions that I can incorporate into our pages and accounts that will better our chances of generating excitement
within our clan and potential members nationally and abroad.
I try to post as much as I can on our pages and accounts, such as:
Photos
Events
Posts
Links
Videos
I would encourage everyone to send in photos, documents, events, or maybe just to say hi to our pages and accounts
so that I may share them with the entire clan. All I ask is that the information you send is in some way related to the
ACLS or Scotland itself.
I also created an email address:

americanclanlockhartsociety@yahoo.com

This email is for those that would like to send their information to me through email instead of any other media.. Also if
you need to get information to any other individual in our clan I could then forward that information on to the person
you are trying to contact. I am also open to any other social media site that we have not yet set up a page or account
at, so that we may broaden our horizons.
It is my hope that once we get established in the social media realm, that we will see new life breathed back into the
ACLS, and see our numbers grow for many years to come.

Colorado's Scottish Game Change

submitted by Daniel Lockhart (#048) of Black Forest, CO

In the past years we have had two major games that the ACLS attended: The Colorado Scottish Festival in
Highlands Ranch and Longs Peak Scottish Irish Festival in Estes Park.
The first major change is the Highlands Ranch location will not be available and this game is being moved to
Snowmass Village , 1-2 August 2015. As this is a six-hour drive for the host, it was decided that we will not
be hosting a tent at this game. The change of location is permanent and will be evaluated later to see if ACLS
will host a tent at a later date.
We will continue to host the Longs Peak Scottish Festival in Estes Park 10-13 September 2015. In addition
this will be the second year for the Pike's Peak Celtic Festival in Colorado Springs, 19-21 June 2015. ACLS
will host a tent at the Pike's Peak Festival beginning this year.
This is not to sway you from attending the Scottish Festival in Snowmass Village but to let you know there
will be no Lockhart tent at this game.
