Progressions
A sequence or a series is an ordered collection of numbers. For example 3, 5,
7, 9, 11.. form a sequence.
(1) Arithmetic Progression (AP):
a, a + d, a + 2d, a + 3d, .are said to form an Arithmetic progression.
a = first term
d = common difference
n th term of the A.P = tn = a + (n 1)d
Sum to n terms of the A.P =
(Or) =

n
[2a (n 1)d]
2
n
[t1 tn] , Where t1 = First term = a
2
tn = nth term = a + (n 1)d.

(2) Geometric Progression (G.P)

a, ar, ar2, ar3 are said to form a G.P.
a First term
r common ratio
n th term of a G.P. = arn-1
Sum to n terms of a G.P. =
Sum to of a G.P. =

(3) Harmonic Progression (H.P)

a, b, c, d are in H.P., then their reciprocals viz.,

1 1 1 1
, , , are in A.P.
a b c d
