Dog day of winter

Banasz household
opens homemade
rink to neighbors
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
A typical Saturday night in
winter usually includes an indoor
activity of some sort to stay out of
the frigid temperatures. At the
Banasz household, a typical Saturday night in winter isnt spent
inside. Instead, it is spent outside
in their backyard with a bonfire,
food and drink, friends, neighbors and a 60-by-30 foot ice rink.
Jeff Banasz, a resident of
Moorestown, has put in his own
ice rink in his backyard for his
family to enjoy. This is his sixth
year of having an ice rink and it
has gotten to be known as a cool
place for friends and neighbors to
hang out. They have even created
a Facebook page called Banasz

The speaker will be the Rev.
Chaney-Moss, whose brother
James Earl Chaney and two other
civil rights workers, Andrew
Goodman and Michael Schwerner, all in their early 20s, were murdered by the KKK in Meridian,
Miss., on the first day of a summer-long crusade to register voters. During Freedom Summer
1964, 900 volunteers, including
many black and white college students, joined the push to enable
African-Americans to vote. That
effort was met with violence, resulting in arrests, beatings and
church bombings, as depicted in
the newly-released film Selma.
In 2014, President Obama awarded a posthumous Presidential
Medal of Freedom to Chaney,
Goodman and Schwerner as unsung heroes who sacrificed their
lives in the fight for freedom, justice and equality.

Chaney-Moss is a sought-after
motivational speaker and was
keynote speaker at the Church
Women United event honoring
Dr. King in the chapel at the United Nations. From 1998-2009, during
International
Womens
Month, she facilitated, A Grand
Gathering of Sisters, a program
she created to offer spiritual healing and empowerment to women.
Chaney-Moss will discuss how
race and racism continue to play
a role in American society and
the ways in which America has,
and has not, moved forward since
1964. After making a short presentation, she has asked that the
evening be an interactive one.
Please bring at least one question

you hear her speak. We hope that
you will join us for this very powerful, riveting and inspiring
evening.

Council agrees: Surplus money from liquor

license sales will be used for tax relief
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
In October, Moorestown Township Council decided by a four-toone vote that the surplus money
from liquor license sales would be
used for tax relief. This was met
with some opposition by Councilman Greg Newcomer and some
members of town, saying the decision wasnt announced as an
item to be discussed, and they felt
that the town should have more
input and notice. There was also
some questioning on whether
procedures were followed correctly.
In December, council decided
to take another vote on the resolution after more complaints were
made that procedures were not
followed correctly and that there
was not adequate notice about the
resolution being made that

evening. Council originally had

the resolution listed on the Jan.
26 meeting agenda, but due to the
snow, the meeting was changed to
Jan. 30 at 8:30 a.m.
The decision on using the surplus money for tax relief was finally unanimously approved by
council on Jan. 30, with the exception of Councilman Phil Garwood, who was absent. However,
once again, it wasnt passed without some opposition, this time
having to do with the wording of
the resolution.
Roger L. Boyell, a 40-year resident of Moorestown and owner of
his own business as an electronic
analyst, was not satisfied with the
wording of the resolution. He felt
saying the money is being used
for tax relief is quite vague and
that council was trying to buy
taxpayer
friendliness.
His
biggest problem however was

Board game a winning idea for Baker School student

Ben DeBear, 8, wins
second place in national
contest for his creation
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Moorestown resident Ben DeBear, an 8year-old Baker School student, created a
game for his house, where he and those
who played would teleport from room to
room through portals until they got to the
room with the treasure. This homemade
game now has a possibility of being created into a board game after Ben submitted
what he called Portals to the 2015 National Young Game Inventors Contest by University Games.
Ben came in second place nationwide
among many other young applicants for
Portals. For his game, he received a certificate of achievement, $250 worth of gift
cards to Toys R Us, 17 of the companys
most popular games, and a letter and a call

from University Games president Bob

Moog.
We were delighted and thrilled for Ben
and excited for him. We were really impressed that Bob Moog called Ben and went
on and on about the concept of the game.
He said he was thinking of publishing it,
which is very exciting, and were just very
proud, Jessica DeBear, Bens mother, said.
The concept for the game began when
Bens father Bjorn created a game called
Scavenger Hunt while they were in the
middle of a move, using the aerial view of
Moorestown Township. Once in their new
home, Ben decided to create his own game
and made one based on the floor plan of
their house.
When Ben brought home information
on the National Young Game Inventors
contest from their Challenge teacher,
Susan Nichols, his parents encouraged
him to enter the contest.
My dad made a game and I decided to
make a game myself. Then I decided to put

is money that doesnt have to be
raised in taxes. Therefore, logic
dictates, anytime you use surplus
for anything, you are not raising
taxes; therefore, it is being used
for tax relief, Carew said.
Newcomer spoke up in defense
of the resolution as well. He supported the idea from the beginning, however he wanted members of the town to have their
input on what to do with the
money. He especially pointed out
that he liked that the resolution
said, if the surplus is to be
used, feeling they dont need to

However, Boyell pointed out
that later in the resolution it said
the surplus shall be used in all
cases, and he felt that was binding the hands of council to spend
it.

The resolution doesnt say

that it requires the surplus to be

The purpose is to reaffirm our
commitment to only using that
money for purposes of tax relief
and not use it for any unnecessary special project, Mayor Victoria Napolitano said.
Township

for tax relief because that would

Ben: Little kids can do good and big stuff

BEN
Continued from page 6
the game into the contest, and I
got second place, Ben said.
Jessica said she wasnt surprised when her son brought
home the information and wanted to enter the contest. She said
Ben and her husband love board
games.
I wasnt surprised because
Ben comes up with this stuff all
of the time; unique ways of configuring numbers, it is his thing.
And because my husband and he
are into board games and play
games all of the time, we said you
have to submit it because you
have a game ready to go, Jessica
said.
The game had to change, of
course; they couldnt use the layout of their house. Instead, Ben
chose to teleport from planet to
planet rather than room to room.
Like in the original math-based
game, each planet is assigned a

number with two smaller numbers. Using a 20-sided die, each

player has to teleport from planet
to planet using those numbers,
until they can get to the planet
with the treasure. Within the
game, there are tokens as well as
playing pieces that Ben made out
of clay into the shape of rocket
ships.
Ben said making the pieces
was the most fun part, other than
actually playing the game and
teleporting from place to place, of
course. However, he said the hardest part was assigning numbers
to each planet. The board game
was a little different than their
house, so Ben had to really think
so each planet could be reached
with a portal.
After creating a prototype of
the game, along with the rules,
Ben submitted his application
and sent it to California in October. With no expectations on
whether it would win, Jessica
said she completely forgot about
it. Then two months later, they
got the call from Moog saying Ben

won second place.

We thought, wow this is so
cool, Jessica said.
I felt great that I tried and that
I didnt give up and to show that
little kids can do good and big
stuff, too, Ben said.
Ben was also honored at his
school on Friday, Jan. 9 by Principal Shelly Rowe when she announced his achievement over
the loudspeaker. According to
Ben, everyone cheered. A couple
of days after, he was called to the
office to get a certificate and picture next to Nichols, the Challenge teacher. His picture and
congrats were displayed on the
schools main TV monitor in the
front hallway.
That felt great, too, Ben said.
When Ben spoke to Moog, the
president told him, I wish you all
the best in your career and keep
up the good work. Ben is not
sure whether he wants to pursue
a career in game making, but Jessica said if he did, she would support him and be happy as long as
he was happy.

Ice Rink that has almost 300

Likes.
It is a good use of the yard in
the wintertime, Banasz said.
Its great for my boys and I because the three of us can go out
there after dinner or early in the
morning and skate. Its pretty
neat.
Banasz grew up on a lake in
Voorhees that would freeze over
in the winter, and he would play
hockey on it. When Banaszs first
son was 2, he thought it would be
a good idea to share the feeling he
had growing up on the lake with
his children. That is when he decided to build a rink in his backyard. He knew about people doing
it before and felt it would freeze a
lot more quickly than a pond.
The first year was the toughest,
Banasz said, because he had to

TARA BANASZ/Special to The Sun

On a cool winter day, the Banasz children and friends play ice hockey
at the Banasz family ice rink. The Banasz Ice Rink is a homemade
ice rink in the Banasz backyard that has become part of a family
tradition each year it is cold enough.
get all the supplies. However,
overall, he said it is not hard to
set up. He started out with a kit

for a smaller 40-by-20 foot rink

that included a tarp and brackets,
and he had to get wood for the
outside of the rink. Over the
years, it grew to the 60-by-30 foot
rink that it is now.
To get the rink ready, Banasz
and his sons put the brackets and
wood in the ground around the
middle of December before the
ground freezes. Around the beginning of January is when they
would start watching the weather.
When there are four or five days
in a row that are cold enough to
freeze the water, that is when they
will finish putting together the
rink and start adding water.
According to Banasz, two hoses
running for 12 hours fill the rink,
which is about four to six inches
deep. He said that is around 51,000
gallons of water. That is a lot of
water to freeze, however, he said a
layer on top would freeze
overnight, which will prevent
leaves from getting in.
If you put water in and it
doesnt freeze right away, leaves
can get in and leaves draw heat.
The trick is to not choose a windy
day and let it freeze overnight.
Leaves cant get in the water after
the layer on top, Banasz said.
To maintain the rink, Banasz
said you have to become your own
Zamboni. After everyone skates,
please see BANASZ, page 19

Banasz: Its like a big ski resort

BANASZ
Continued from page 18
you need to shovel off all the
loose ice shavings. Then you pour
hot water over the top of the ice
that will eventually freeze and
create a smooth service. Banasz
said it is much easier at his new
house because he has a utility
sink in his garage where he can
get hot water. Before, he used to
use cold water from a spigot and
it just wouldnt work as well. Hot
water on top melts the first layer
and makes the ice smooth and
level for skating.
One might wonder if the rink
affects the ground negatively, but
Banasz says not at all. The rink
insolates the grass underneath,
allowing it to stay green. Once
they take the tarp down, the ice
melts so slowly it practically waters the grass, without any flooding problem at all.
At first, the rink was just for
Banasz and his children. However, as they have gotten older,
friends have been invited to come
over with their parents, too. Its
become an attraction on a Saturday or Sunday, where the Banaszs
send an open invitation to friends
and neighbors. It became such a
big thing they created a Facebook
page to let people know when
there is an open skate. Many
nights include a bonfire, food and
drinks, and lots of fun ice-skating.
Its like a big ski resort without the mountain, which is great
because my wife and I like to entertain. It is really fun to do, Banasz said.
Banasz is glad the rink has
grown to include their friends. He
feels creating those memories

with family and friends is the

best part.
Everyone says youre making
great memories here. Its cool
looking back growing up on the
lake. And I hope my sons and
their friends do the same here. As
they get older, I hope theyll say, I
had a great time every winter
going over the Banaszs. Playing
hockey with my boys and having
fun with them and coming over
with their friends to create mem-

ories is probably the best part,

Banasz said.
The Banasz Ice Rink isnt the
only backyard rink around. According to Banasz, though he is
not sure it is a trend, he has heard
of four or five other families who
have put together rinks in their
backyard. He said it isnt hard to
do and definitely works for a fun
time for families and friends to
share in the wintertime together.
