Preposition

Preposition makes relationship between Noun and Noun or Pronoun. It also determines
the situation
of a sentence. Prepositions are too many, but the general ones in which people usually
find difficulty are; on, in, at, to, under, above, with, into, by, of etc. Below are the
examples of prepositions in which you will see that the preposition determines the
situation of a sentence and links noun to noun or pronoun.
Preposition is further divided into following categories.

Preposition for agent; by

Preposition for time; in, on, at, etc.

Preposition for device, instrument or machines; on, by, with, etc.

Preposition for place; in, on, at, etc

Preposition for direction; to, towards, into, through etc.

Prepositions used after verbs to make prepositional verb. e.g. look at, look
after, laugh at

Types of Preposition
There are six types of preposition as mentioned in the previous page. They are
explained below.
1. Preposition for Time
2. Preposition for Place
3. Preposition for Direction
4. Preposition for Agent
5. Preposition for Instrument
6. Prepositional Phrase
Prepositions for Time (in, on, at)
There are different prepositions used with the different types and durations of time.
Prepositions for time are; in, on, at.
1. In is used with month, year, in particular time of the day, century or some
particular age of the past.

Examples

In March 1940. (month)

In morning. (time of the day)

In Stone Age. (particular age of the past)

In 1945. (year)

1. On is used with days, date and any particular day.


Examples

On Sunday. (day)

On 10th June. (date)

On Independence Day. (Particular day)

1. At is used with time and some confined places, like buildings (for large places
in is used)
Examples

At 6 oclock. (time)

At home. (short place, building)

At college (short place, building)

Preposition for Place (in, on, at)


Prepositions used for the space are; in, on, at.
1. In is used for confined places which have boundary. And the places that are
large, like cities.
Examples

In London.

In New York City.

In the class.

2. On is used for surface.

Examples

On the table.

On the road.

On the slab.

3. At is used for confined place.


Examples

At home.

At thisCollege.

At the school.

Preposition for Direction.


(Towards, to, through, into)
There are some Prepositions that are used for the direction, for example: toward, to,
through, into. There are some examples to let you understand that.
Examples
1. He was going to the market.
2. Dont jump into the lake.
3. He went towards them.
Preposition for Agent. (by)
Preposition for agent that preposition in a sentence which is actually caused by
something else, for example; by and with. There are some examples to let you
understand this.
Examples
1. Hamlet is written by Shakespeare.
2. Report is submitted by him.
3. Home work is properly done by the students.
Preposition for instrument, device, or machine.
There are different preposition used for the different instruments and devices etc, for
example; by, with, on. There are some examples to let you understand that.
Examples
1. I come to the college by a van.
2. Internet is used with computer.

Some Conventional use of Preposition


Preposition has some conventional use. It means that the rules dont allow but the only
reason behind them is the long tradition. There are many conventional prepositions and
there is only one way to master them, and that is to keep on reading more and more
books.
Examples
1. Lecturer in English (Not, Lecturer of English, whereas Professor of English is a
right sentence)
2. Living on the colony (Not, in the colony)
3. Sleeping in the bed (Not, on the bed)
Phrasal Prepositions
There are many prepositions that are always used in the phrase along with verb.
Hence they are called the Phrasal Prepositions.
Examples
1. Compliance with
(In compliance with the rules)
2. Listen to
(Listen to me)
3. Add to
(he added to the miseries of his parents)
4. Agree to (for thing)
(He agreed to it that he will come to me tomorrow)
5. Agree with (for person)
(I agree with him)
6. Disagree with
(I disagree with his opinion about me)
7. Ponder on / over
(He pondered over the matter)
8. According to
(According to the rules you cannot refund the fee)
9. In accordance with
(He witnessed in accordance with law)
