Calibration of Barton Recorders

Differential (Red Pen)

Purpose:
To calibrate the differential pen and associated linkage of the ITT Barton model 202A.
Potential Hazards:

Pressure Release
Pressure
Please see attached drawing

Action:

Information:

1. With a recorder chart in place, move

the pen from zero to full span and back
to make certain that pen travels along
the time line of chart. Make any
necessary adjustment to the pen mount
with the pen at the zero end of the chart.

1. Linkage may be disconnected to

perform this step.

2. Ensure there is enough pen pressure

against the chart to produce a continuous
line. If necessary adjust pen arm by
bending pen arm in the required direction.

2. The pen should spring free of the

chart when the chart is pushed
inward about one-eighth of an inch.

3. Using a manometer apply 50% pressure and

arrange the differential pressure as shown in
accompanying picture.

3. Drive link should be approximately

90 degrees relative to drive arm and
90 degrees relative to a straight line
drawn through the pivot points on the
range arm.

4. Remove pressure and observe pen actions.

4. Differential pen should now read

zero.

5. If the pen is less than 10% from zero in

any direction, make fine adjustments by
using the pen zero adjustment screw.

CALIBRATION OF BARTON RECORDERS

Action:

Information:

6. If the pen is off by more than 10% from

Zero make the following adjustment.
Rotate pen arm and shaft by gripping the
range arm and gently forcing the pen until
indicating zero.

6. The pen arm and shaft should rotate

at the range arm pivot without
loosening the range arm lock screw.

7. Using the manometer apply 100% pressure

and observe the pen. If any adjustments
must be made use range arm adjust screw.

7. When adjusting with range arm

adjust screw, turn screw clockwise.

8. Zero meter and then apply 50% pressure

and observe pen. If pen is within 2% use
the fine linear adjustment screw to adjust.
If the pen deviates more than 2% from the
correct indication, the pen linkage may have
to be lengthened or shortened. To do this you
must loosen the link screw and adjust the
linkage depth until the pen indicates 50%
and then make the final adjustment with the
linearity adjust screw.

8. Always tighten link screw before

making the adjustments with the
linearity adjust screw.

9. Repeat steps 6 through 8 until all three

points of calibration have been completed.

9. All three points of calibration are

0%, 50% and 100%.
