Fraternities at the University of

British Columbia are cashing in
on the 2010 Winter Olympics by
renting out their bedrooms.
Five of the eight frat houses
in the “fraternity village” have
decided to rent out their houses
to athletes. The village is located
near UBC’s Thunderbird Arena,
where the Olympic hockey
games will take place.
While several fraternities are
participating, the decision was
not entirely made by the resi-
dents.
At Psi Upsilon, the fraternity
alumni decided to rent the
rooms on behalf of the students.
“Because the house is owned
by alumni, we do not own the
contract of the house, the alum-
ni does,” Kyle Mitchell, president
of Psi Upsilon’s Zeta Zeta chap-
ter, explained. “So they made the
decision on what to do with the
house.”
While most members were
able to find alternative housing,
a committee was formed to help
some who were unable to find a
place to live.
According to Mitchell, frater-
nity members spend about $730
a term to rent a room in the
house, including food. By rent-
ing out the space, many of the
frat members will make a profit.
However, Mitchell was unwilling
to comment on exactly how
much the fraternity stands to
make.
At Alpha Delta Phi — another
fraternity located in the village
— the decision to rent rooms
was made by the residents.
“[The decision] could not
have taken place without the
approval of the students,” Tim
Laidler, house manager of Alpha
Delta Phi, said. “It was some-
thing that we brought to a meet-
ing back in May and students
made a resolution at the stu-
dents’ annual general meeting.”
Terrie Eastmade, assistant
executive director of Alpha Delta
Phi’s international chapter,
noted the decision to rent the
rooms was made locally.
“The international [chapter]
had nothing to do with this,”
Eastmade said.
Laidler mentioned the wind-
fall reaped from the rentals
would go into much-needed
house repairs as well as a stu-
dent bursary to be given out at
the end of the year.
“It is very positive for the stu-
dents. They’re all benefiting
from this greatly,” Laidler said.

LTC drivers seeking Western institute to aid
safety measures Canada, U.S. relations

Female bus drivers with the Lon-
don Transit Commission are push-
ing for security cameras to be
installed on buses.
The installation would be in
response to operator assault and
violence, which has been an ongo-
ing issue for the past 10 years,
according to John Gillet, vice-pres-
ident of the Amalgamated Transit
Union Local 741.
“Our main concern is how to
address concerns of violence in the
workplace,” Larry Ducharme, LTC
general manager, stated. “We have
gone through, over the past four
years, a number of things where we
deal with advocacy on stricter
enforcement and penalties for acts
of violence against transit workers.”
Ducharme said the Occupation-
al Health and Safety Committee are
in the process of assessing how to
best implement security cameras.
“This project could run in the
area of $800,000 to $1 million, and
this money was approved in the
2009 budget,” he noted.
The motivation behind this pro-
ject was the increasing violence
being directed towards female
operators.
“There seems to be more vio-
lence directed towards female
operators,” Gillet said. “Female vio-
lence is more prominent in the
public eye, but risk factors are the
same for males and females in this
occupation.”
While violence applies to all
operators equally, it also applies to
passengers, according to
Ducharme.
Elgin Austen, director of West-
ern’s Campus Community Police
Service, said cameras are a deter-
rent for people who may want to
commit violence.
“It does help with the overall
safety of the passengers and the dri-
vers,” he said.
Austen also noted violence
against bus operators can interfere
with safe driving and put passen-
gers at risk as well.
Megan Radford, a fourth-year
student at King’s University College,
said she rides the bus on a daily
basis and has witnessed verbal
abuse towards operators but never
physical violence.
Radford did not believe
installing cameras would improve
bus safety. “All they can do is find
the person after [the incident has
happened] and it won’t stop the
events from happening at that
moment.”
Andrew Beach, Huron councillor
for the University Students’ Coun-
cil, once witnessed two passengers
fighting on a bus, which escalated
into verbal abuse against the driver
when they were asked to get off.
“The conversation now is timely
because of the threat or belief that
there will be increased violence
towards bus drivers in light of the
strike,” Beach said.

Western faculty are talking to Amer-
icans — and Canadians — in hopes
of shedding light on Canada’s rela-
tionship with our southern neigh-
bour.
The recent establishment of the
Canada-U.S. Institute at Western is
a national first.
Don Abelson, director of West-
ern’s Centre for American Studies
and a co-ordinator of the Institute,
believes there is still a need for for-
malized studies on American poli-
tics, culture and history.
Research concerning American-
Canadian relations has been de-
emphasized in academic institu-
tions in the past, with many Cana-
dians thinking they are already
well-informed about the U.S., Abel-
son said in an interview with West-
ern News.
“We hope that by understanding
each other better, [Western] will be
in a position to inform policy mak-
ers, journalists and fellow acade-
mics about what’s going on in the
United States,” Abelson explained.
He added Canada is in a better
position to advance its national
interest south of the border by stay-
ing informed about the U.S.
The institute plans to examine
important North American issues
such as health care, trade, border
security, the environment and dif-
ferences in foreign policy in regards
to Afghanistan and Iraq.
Three Western research centres
will form the core of the new insti-
tute and scholars from other

departments and faculties are also
expected to participate.
Abelson noted feedback from
potential American collaborators
has been positive. Even the Canadi-

“There is no other institute in
Canada devoted exclusively to
studying Canada-U.S. relations,” he
said. “I think it’s the right time and
perfect opportunity for Western to
harness some of its intellectual
resources and build the type of inter-
national profile that our new presi-
dent [Amit Chakma] is looking for.”
The institute is currently in the
process of forming research teams
with hopes they will be able to pro-
duce working papers, seminars and
organized workshops within a year.
Laura Stephenson, a political
science professor at Western and
member of the Centre for American
Studies, has already launched a
study on behalf of the Institute.
The research project is designed
to assess the attitudes and percep-
tions of Canadians towards the U.S.
and vice versa.
Stephenson noted she was in
the preliminary stages of launching
an Internet survey to garner sam-
ples from both sides of the border.
Abelson is optimistic about the
Institute’s future in the hands of
Western students and staff.
“When you combine faculty
research interests with an insa-
tiable desire on the part of under-
graduate and graduate [students]
for courses dealing with the United
States, you create a perfect synergy
to allow this kind of institute to
flourish.”

Anderson dominates again

The Mustangs were playing for
more than just themselves on Sat-
urday.
At the third annual Shoot for a
Cure game, the Western Mustangs
women’s basketball team won a
nail-biter, defeating the Brock Bad-
gers 76-75 in overtime.
However, Western was unable to
keep up with Brock’s high tempo
offence early on, allowing the Bad-
gers to jump out to a 38-27 lead at
halftime. The Mustangs had to
make changes after the first half.
“We had to pick up the ball more
in transition and slow it down. We
had to get out on the shooters. We
let them go off in the first half,”

At halftime, former Western stu-
dent Theresa Carriere gave a heart-
felt speech about her battle with
cancer. Her speech sparked the
Mustangs in the third, as they went
on a 10-0 run to shrink Brock’s lead
to two.

Despite an early lead, the Mustangs
failed to hang on to the win.
The Western women’s hockey
team opened up its two-game
weekend with a heartbreaking 5-4
loss at home against the Guelph
Gryphons on Saturday evening.
After the game, Mustangs head
coach Paul Cook expressed his dis-
appointment with his team’s play.
“Grave errors cost us the hockey
game today,” he said. “Giveaways
and poor defensive play in our zone
really hurt us.”
The game started out well for
the Mustangs as they dominated
play during the first period, jump-
ing out to the quick 2-0 lead with
goals from forwards Chantal Morais
and Katie Dillon.
“We were pretty pumped before
the game,” Mustangs leading scorer
Ellie Seedhouse said. “We obvious-
ly came out strong.”

led the way for the Mustangs in

to give Western the 74-72 lead with
only 18 seconds left.
“Hopefully it’s the kind of oppor-
tunity that lets her understand her
capabilities,” Barrie said of Parkes’
strong play. “If we’re going to com-
pete for the league title, then were
going to need her to play like that.”
Brock responded with their
leading scorer, Hillary Woodside,
draining a three, giving the Badgers
a one-point lead.
Calling a timeout, Barrie drew

However, it didn’t take long for
Western to reclaim the two-goal lead.
After having her first goal of the

If there was one bright spot in
this game for the Mustangs, it was
their strong offensive play on the
penalty kill, which resulted in two
goals.
“Penalty killing is really impor-
tant,” Cook said. “That was one of
the issues that we went over before
the game today and executed fairly
decently.”

LOLA series starts strong with jazz trio
The Necks’ stop in London a testament to flourishing local arts scene

If you’re in the mood for impro-
vised, experimental jazz-trance
music by an Australian band, you’re
in luck — veteran band The Necks
are coming all the way from their
sunny homeland to headline the
first installment of the London
Ontario Live Arts concert series Fri-
day evening at Museum London.
The folks who bring unique
musical talent to the city every Sep-
tember for LOLA Festival are contin-
uing the tradition, and are ecstatic
The Necks — a trio that has released
14 albums — are hitting the stage.
“[We’ve] been following The
Necks for quite some time,”
explains LOLA artistic director Paul
Walde. “They were on our radar as
someone who we would like to get
but probably never would because
they’re in Australia.”
The band is fortunately able to
pass through London after a perfor-
mance in Toronto this week. Walde
says their visit is an indication of the
flourishing local music scene.
“We’re on the radar with some of
the presenters and the artists and
they’re starting to call us,” he says.
“It’s nice that when bands are plan-
ning these international tours, Lon-
don […] is one of the stops that
people are considering now.”
“Bands like The Necks usually
have to rely on a larger urban centre
to find enough people who are
interested in that type of music to
come out,” he continues. “That’s
one of the things we’re proud of at
LOLA — that we’re developing an
audience for adventurous musical
experiences.”
But don’t think you have to be a
music connoisseur or a huge jazz
fan to enjoy the unusual stylings of
The Necks.

“Jazz is only part of what we do,
and I don’t think it’s necessary to
have gotten on top of that particu-
lar music in order to appreciate
ours,” says bassist Lloyd Swanton.
“I think one thing that makes our
music [comparative] is that we work
with very simple material,” he
explains. “We set up some sort of
mood or texture or groove, and
because the respective elements are
generally pretty discernible, even a
listener with no knowledge of the
genre can hear something’s hap-
pened — they can follow the twists
and turns of our pieces fairly easily.”
The Necks are also known for
their improvisation on stage, and
some of their pieces are up to an

hour long. Despite playing together
for such a long time, maintaining a
level of freedom on stage is impor-
tant to the band.
“Obviously, after being together
for 22 years, we sometimes slip into
familiar territory,” Swanton says.
“It’s impossible to re-invent the
wheel every show, but each one of
us would feel we were letting the
other side down if we start plough-
ing too-familiar terrain.”
The opening artists for the LOLA
series show are from a bit closer to
home. Todor Kobakov, a Toronto
composer-producer-musician, has
training in classical piano but his
current music is alternative and is
influenced by pop.
“I consider him a virtuoso,”
Walde says. “He plays beautifully
but is also creating beautiful com-
positions. It’s quite romantic, quite
beautiful and ethereal type music.”
Transmorphous Sound Ensem-
ble comprises Chris Meloche and
Richard Moule, both CHRW radio
hosts, and will perform first.
“People don’t always know what
they’re going to get at a LOLA con-
cert, because there’s always an
eclectic range of things,” Walde
says. “But I think they recognize
that it’s always going to be quality.”
The first LOLA concert series of
the year takes place at Museum
London on Fri. Jan 22 at 7:30 p.m.

raising awareness and strategies to

challenge — but something fresh,
creative and politically charged has
been brought to our attention.
