THE BEDFORD CLANGER

FEBRUARY 2015

LETTER
FROM
THE
EDITOR
The monthly Bedford Clanger is back by public demand and we are so
excited to once again be bringing you the very best of Bedfords culture,
art, music, theatre, food, drink and events.
As ever, our aim is to head off the beaten track to highlight the unique stuff that makes
Bedford brilliant. Well have band interviews, theatre previews, film info and news
as well as contributions by Guardian gardening editor, Jane Perrone, wise words from
Bedford Prison Chaplain and Radio 2 contributor, Rev Sharon Grenham-Toze and a new
collaboration with illustration collective, Art School Disco. Love what we do? Then join our
New Years Revolution (more info on page 3).
In the centre pages weve hand-picked the very best that February has to offer, so if you only
have the time or money to do one thing this month, we hope this gives you some inspiration.
As well as re-launching the paper, we also have a brand new website www.
thebedfordclanger.com. Our fully searchable online Listings page is now home to all local
events. It is constantly being updated, so add it to your bookmarks and regularly check for
updates. You can also follow us on twitter @bedfordclanger or join our facebook group.
So, all that remains to be said is Happy Reading and see you next month.

DO SOMETHING BRILLIANT GIVE FOOD

This year were working with Media Trust to encourage
our readers to get involved in their Do Something Brilliant
campaign. This months theme is Give Food so we asked
Priya Gill to get the Bedford angle.
Since April last year, the Bedford Langar Project run
by the Akaal Seva group serves free vegetarian curries for
vulnerable people; families, individuals and the homeless.
On average, more than 100 meals are dished up once a month
in Church Square (better known as Pigeon Square.) Ravi Gill, a
member of the Akaal Seva project, said: Its gone better than we
first anticipated, its explodedits gone from strength to strength.
The group has a core team of eight to 12 members,

with many more people helping behind the scenes. From

volunteering, donating food and cooking the tasty meals,
help comes from Bedfords three gurdwaras, the Guru Nanak
Gurdwara, Queens Park, Ramgarhia Gurdwara, Amphtill Road
and Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara, Kempston. Additional
support comes from Bedfordshire Housing Link.
Ravi adds, The food is social relationship building, we feel
we can talk to these people and they feel they can speak to us.
The next Vegetarian Curry Night is Feb 1, 6 7:15pm,
Pigeon Square, Bedford.

Bedford-born actress Nicola Weeks is putting brides in the
spotlight with her new bridal boutique.

George James Bridal, located on Harpur Street, Bedford opened its doors
on Monday 26th January and will house fabulous collections from leading
designers. Brides can book in for an appointment where they will be greeted
with a glass of bubbly while they look for their dream dress.
Having worked on stage for all my life, I am well aware that a womans
wedding is one of the most special and important occasions - one where she
will be centre stage. I want to bring magic and glamour to that experience
right from the day she chooses her dress, said Nicola.

WERE ALL ABOUT STRANGERS & FRIENDS & THE HAPPY BIT IN BETWEEN

1. SHOP LOCAL

We all love the internet, but sometimes theres nothing better than
actually seeing, touching and smelling the thing youre buying.
From unique boutiques to department stores, market stalls to
mobile phone shops, Bedford town centre has got variety and
individuality. You like Costa? Great, cos there are two to choose
from. You prefer an indie coffee shop? Take your pick!

and George Ezra are just a few who have played at Esquires and it
is definitely the place to catch bands on their rise up the ladder of
fame. But theres more to Bedfords music scene than just Esquires.
The Corn Exchange, the Pad, the Ent Shed, St Cuthberts Hall, St
Pauls and St Peters churches all host live music from sweeping
choral epics to unplugged acoustic sessions.

6. SUPPORT INDIE RETAILERS

Use em or lose em. Its that simple.

2.VISIT A MUSEUM

Bedford has a rich history from prehistoric beasts via sieges and
idiosyncratic religious sects. Our most famous resident, John
Bunyan is honoured with his own museum and the recently
opened Panacea Museum is a fascinating insight into Edwardian
non-conformity. As part of your revolutionary activities, why not
stroll around the Higgins enjoying their beautiful Bawden collection and then have a cuppa and slice of cake at the Pantry?

3. LOVE YOUR TOWN

The beautiful river, our Victorian parks, cultural diversity, the

Bedford Blues, great pubs, amazing curry houses, weve even
got our own brewery for goodness sake. Dont take Bedford for
granted: love your town.

4. USE THE LIBRARY

Libraries are not the stuffy, silent places of yesteryear.

Whether youre in Bedford, Putnoe or Kempston check out
your local library.

5. WATCH LIVE MUSIC

There is nothing like the visceral pleasure of being at a gig. The

raw energy and talent, the pack mentality of the crowd and the
knowledge that this exact moment in time will never, ever happen
again. Elbow, The Libertines, Royal Blood, Franz Ferdinand, Alt-J

7. SUPPORT YOUR
LOCAL THEATRE

In Bedford we have four town centre theatres. Yes, you read

that right. Four. Or five if you count the Corn Exchange. Thats
more than double the number of town centre Costas and Tescos.
Bedford Theatre, The Place, Trinity Theatre and the University of
Bedfordshire Theatre (UoB) all programme a variety of am-dram
and professional shows so theres something to suit all tastes. Sign
up to each theatres newsletters and join their Facebook pages to
get the latest booking info. Of course, you could ignore all of this
and dash off a letter to the BoS moaning that we dont have
a theatre in the town. Bedfordtheatre.co.uk
theplacebedford.org.uk beds.ac.uk/theatre
trinityleisure.co.uk bedfordcornexchange.co.uk

8. BECOME A
HOMETOWN TOURIST

It is very easy to become blas about Bedford, so why not

become a revolutionary tourist? Take a look at our town through
the eyes of a visitor and find out whats off the beaten track.

Two years ago, after a hard-drive crash and a near death experience, Ross
Sutherland found himself house-bound with only one thing for company: an
old videotape that once belonged to his granddad. On it were one and a half
films, one quiz show and two sit-coms.
Over the months that followed, Ross memorised every second of the
tape. Slowly, he learnt how to manipulate the images into telling the story
of his life. The videotape allowed Ross to open a dialogue with his late
grandfather and eventually helped him confront the illness that had nearly
ended his life.
The true story of one mans journey into synchronicity and madness, this
is a wonderfully layered piece, touching, funny and linguistically thrilling.

This is a 60-minute version of Propellers acclaimed production of

Comedy of Errors, arguably Shakespeares funniest and most farcical
comedy. Two sets of estranged twins, separated at birth, find themselves
in the same city 25 years later what could go wrong? With a series
of mistaken identities, assumed personas and wild mishaps, the plot
thickens in a production full of poetry, speed and imagination.

Waiting for Stanley takes us back to 1945 and a railway station

platform where a wife is waiting anxiously for her husband, Stanley,
to return from the front. The train arrives full of homecoming soldiers,
but Stanley fails to appear. Throughout this touching, physical comedy,
suitcases transform into radios, cribs, typewriters and a whole host of
other props, as clowning and puppetry combine to paint a picture of
how life was for Londons women during the war.

BLACKPOOL ROCK
BLOSSOMS BLOOM
Blossoms are ahem, blooming on the
gig circuit at the moment headlining
around our isle plus having
respectable support slots for Inspiral
Carpets & The Charlatans.
All the way from Stockport, the roll
neck sweatered troop describe their
sound as Ethereal Nostalgic Sonance
(we deciphered that as swirly 60s
psych-pop).
Been to Bedford before?
No, but very close. Lost a bag at
Newport Pagnell services (Theres
a Smiths lyric in there). Id like to
keep with the irony in saying we were
travelling in a Bedford Van, now that
would be spooky. Anything we need to
know before we pay you a visit? (Check
Lost & Found for cocktails, The Bear?)
How was Inspirals support?
Fantastic. Extremely accommodating
and a great opportunity to pick up a
few more fans, extend the fanbase
you know. This is how it feels to be a
support band.
Is there a master plan?
Master plan sounds a little rich, the
blueprints have most definitely been
drawn up for the not-so-distant future.
Weve been water boarded and sworn to
secrecy on any information, apologies...
Best gig venue/town to date?
Were big architecture enthusiasts/nerds
and love a good old fashioned picture

house conversion, something that can

tell a story. Theres quite a few on our
clipboard including, Southampton
Guildhall and Carlisle Brickyard.
Very much looking forward to your
place, of course.
Whats in a name?
The name derives from the infamous
Stockfordian watering hole The
Blossoms in which Jack Bruce/Ginger
Baker (Pre-Cream) once pinched a
piano, wheeled it over to a nearby venue
and played acoustically, due to a heavy
power cut! The name was uncannily
suggested twice in one week to Joe
(Drums). Once by Tom (Vocals) and
secondly by Charlie (Bass) - Id use the
mystic ball emoji here if I could.
How did you meet?
The five of us first crossed musical
swords at a local hotel where we were
all playing on the same bill in different
bands. It was fate... or the Red Stripe.
Favourite Books?
Everyone wants Holden Caulfields
Deerstalker, Toru Watanabes romance
and the escapism of Esther Greenwood.
Enough to get where you want to be?

Hotly-tipped noise-trio Darlia come to Bedford Esquires on 16

Februay. Its the first date of a short UK tour to promote minialbum Petals which will see them play only six other dates, most
of which are in major cities, so were excited they have chosen to
start with Bedford.
Around for a couple of years, 2014 was a breakthrough
for the band. They played Reading and Leeds festivals, as
well as the Libertines Hyde Park show. They supported
ex-My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way recently
and have been lauded by many tastemakers as the real deal;
they headlined the NME KOKO Halloween ball and this tour
also includes a headline at the NME awards. Radio 1 seem to
love them, having made various releases Single of the Day, or
whatnot; Zane Lowe put the last single Stars are Aligned on
his hottest tracks list.
There should be several clues in the previous paragraph
which give an idea what the band sound like, but if you like
mid-90s-quiet/loud with a bit of angst then Darlia could be
your new favourite band. Rock solid guitars and big hooks

Loads of well-earned hype about Lola Colt at the

moment, with many predicting big things for the band
in the next 12 months. We suggest you dont miss the

Taking their name from a 60s spaghetti western, Lola
Colt are a powerful and imposing six-piece with three
girls and three guys, fronted by captivating Danish
vocalist Gun. The band have sent their audiences
into a frenzy with their more than memorable live

PHILOSOPHY FOR
SKEPTICS
After philosophy was dismissed by physicist Brian Cox, Dr. Clio Bellenis decided
that she had to speak out in favour of this
oft-misunderstood subject. Addressing
philosophical concepts such as personal

identity and free will, Dr. Bellenis will talk

about the transferable arguments between
the two disciplines and tell us why philosophy can be of huge worth to scientists,
skeptics and in developing critical thinking.

psychiatrist with an MA in Philosophy. She
is also an atheist, skeptic and a feminist.

LOST &
FOUND

A brand new adventure in getting tipsy came to Bedford just

before Christmas, with the small, but perfectly formed cocktail
bar Lost & Found. The 50 capacity venue on Lime Street has
made use of reclaimed pallet wood and scaffold boards to create
a unique look and atmosphere, more at home on a side street in
London than here in the heart of Bedford.
Head barman Tom has created a strong, five page cocktail
menu to suit every taste, with top sellers including a zesty
Lemon Meringue Martini, the Bruised Apple and a Brandy Old
Fashioned, sitting comfortably alongside many drinks youll of
heard of, and plenty you might not of too! Not a cocktail lover?
Every month Lost & Found change their six different craft beers
too, so youll always have something new to try.
The team behind the bar wanted to create something that
didnt already exist in the town - a bar that served real cocktails,
in a nice environment, and very importantly, with great music.
We heard an eclectic mix of soul, funk and old skool hip hop
while supping back on a drink, with playlists and mixes curated
for the venue by some of the towns finest DJs.
You can find Lost & Found at 4 Lime St, open from
Thursday - Saturday from 5.30pm for after work drinks, right
through until 12.30am for after, after, after work drinks.
For more information on the venue, go and find them
on Facebook.

The adventure begins on the edge of Bedford Park. It is, in January,

the Park of Darkness. You have your torch and, if youre lucky, friends
enough not to let the nearby graveyard overshadow your thoughts. At
7.00 pm the bandstand shines like a Victorian beacon, proud emblem
of civic pride and town planning. At 7.00 pm the Pavilion, like a trim
hunting lodge hidden in the forest, beckons the nocturnal traveller.
The greetings warm. Nansi Rose from Team Pavilion is on hand
as we arrive and the long tables are filling with what look like
familiar faces, faces glimpsed in the park, the Corn Exchange, the
Higgins. The air is convivial, theres a camaraderie found only in
mess tents or polar ice stations. People have brought their own wine
and beer, corkage is 3, glasses are filled. The first course arrives
when all are seated: parsnip & celeriac soup with rustic bread. Its
sweet, delicious, piping hot. The conviviality grows. The service
is unobtrusive, smiling, efficient. Theres the feeling that this is the
dinner party youd always planned to have and now its effortlessly
taking place around you. Theres the opportunity to take in your
surroundings: a Bohemian scout hut, a candlelit scene taken from a
page of the Ladybird Book of Glamping.

The main course arrives: roast chicken breast in a wild mushroom

sauce with griddled asparagus & saut potatoes. The chicken is
perfectly done, the asparagus has a wonderfully light smoky flavour,
the mushrooms remind you of the wild woods outside with their
earthy darkness. Its all delicately presented, as pleasing to the
eye as it is to the belly. By 9.30 were on to the pudding: white
chocolate panna cotta with poached peaches and winter fruits. Its
rich and subtle and beautifully assembled. As coffee and tea is being
served people begin to move from one table to another. Friends are
greeted, introductions are made. By 10.30 things seem to be winding
down. Emma Garrett, another member of the entrepreneurial Team
Pavilion, is on hand to field questions and say goodbye.
Is it all worth 25 a head? Yes, for the supper, care and
camaraderie. They use seasonal, free-range and locally sourced
ingredients, theyre getting more people into the park by day and
by night. Open on Wednesday and Friday evenings the menus
which are fixed can be found on the Pavilions website,
Facebook page and Twitter account.

THE BEDFORD CLANGER

GREAT
BEDFORDIANS
JOSHUA HAWKINS

BY DAVID FOWLER, BEDFORD TOUR GUIDES

BEDFORDTOURGUIDES.ORG
Joshua Hawkins lived in Bedford for only
thirteen years, but we should recognise
his name in grateful remembrance, as
the Mayor who was the principal in the
provision of Bedford landmarks the
original Prebend Street Bridge, Bedford
Park and the Suspension Bridge. He
must have been quite a character, born in
Devon in 1845, an ex-Methodist minister,
he came to Bedford in 1879, purchasing
a half share in The Bedfordshire Times
and Independent in partnership with his
friend Arthur Ransom. With this as a
platform he soon became a Liberal Town
Councillor helping to establish the Liberal
Club which stood in Midland Road. By
1883 Hawkins was Mayor, a position he
filled five times until 1890. He wrote in an
editorial that, to be attractive the Town
must keep up and improve its present
good appearance; its sanitary arrangements must be fully maintained; there
must be no question about the quantity or
quality of the water; nor must the provision for recreation be neglected; and with
it all the rates must not be too high, and
he saw those ideas through.
At that time between Albany Road &
Bushmead Avenue alongside the River
there was either a slum or a row of 24
tradesmans cottages according to which
report you read, named Waterloo. Driven

by Hawkins the Town Council determined

that they should be demolished to enable
the Gardens to be established, together
with the Suspension Bridge. An enthusiastic councillor bought the land for 4,000
and offered it back to the Council for
2,000! Not all were in favour, there was
much debate and some opposition.
His ill health prevented Hawkins from
attending the celebrations to mark the
opening of Bedford Park and the Suspension
Bridge and led to his death in 1892 aged
46. Town shops closed for the funeral with
crowds lining the streets and he was buried
at Foster Hill Road Cemetery.
His wife, Hester Periam Hawkins was
also well known a Fellow of the Royal
Astronomical Society (she wrote the ABC
Guide to Astronomy still well regarded
today), was a Methodist hymn writer, a
novelist and a lifelong supporter of the
Temperance Movement. She gave a Hall
to Queens Park in Joshuas memory for
recreational and educational purposes
including a library, now the Jamia Masjid
Hanfia Ghousia. She died in Reigate in
1928 aged 81.
Joshuas name is preserved on four
plaques around the Town Prebend Street
(County) Bridge, the Suspension Bridge,
the old Fire Station (Civic), Mill Street
and Bedford School, main building.

UNIQUE BEDFORD

ANIMAL GALLERY & STUDIOS

24 CASTLE LANE, BEDFORD
BY ERICA ROFFE
Castle Lane has a very special place in my heart. Its home
to the newly refurbished Higgins museum and gallery, it
has some great restaurants, its hosted the superbly quirky
pop up cinema and there are some truly unique shops in this
corner of Bedford including Pensieri, Design Twenty and
Lady Ks boutique.
In fact, its hard to remember the time when the units were
empty, the museum was closed and most of Bedford had
forgotten the street existed.
Back in 2011, when seven of the properties were vacant,
We Are Bedford spearheaded by Kayte Judge - ran a
number of empty shops projects in Castle Lane.
Therefore, it is beautifully apposite that the last unit to be
let on Castle Lane is a collaboration that Kayte is involved
in: Animal Studios.
Animal Studios is many things. One half of the building
is Animal Gallery which regularly exhibits contemporary
art, design and illustration work created by some of the best
creative artists from around the world. The other side of
the building is a vibrant co-working studio space currently
home to freelance illustrators, graphic designers, architects
and creative individuals working in arts education and
events management.
If you are interested in exhibiting or co-working at
Animal Studios, then get in touch via their Facebook page,
tumblr or twitter.
Animal studios is also used as a client meeting facility, an
area to run workshops, film-screenings, pop-up activities and
a host of other events.

FEBRUARY 2015

BEDFORDSHIRE HAS TOP

BILLING FOR 2015 CINEMA
BY PAUL HUTCHINSON,
CO-FOUNDER AND
DIRECTOR OF BEDFORD
FILM FESTIVAL
As if the return of The Clanger wasnt
highlight enough for 2015, were also
in for an excellent year of film. Whats
more, Bedfordshire has played a sterling
supporting role in some of the biggest
films due for release in the next 12 months.
Pan, filmed at the Cardington Hangers,
and starring Hugh Jackman is set for
release in July. The iconic airship hangars
have seen a new lease of life as a film
set, with Pan filming there in the summer
of 2014. There was even a fireworks
display, which entertained locals in nearby
Cardington and Shortstown, when the
filming wrapped.
James Bond fans will be delighted to
have seen the announcement at the end of
last year that SPECTRE will finally appear
in the updated and rebooted franchise.
While Im very excited to see Christophe
Waltz as the Bond baddie, and of course
Daniel Craig returning as 007, Im very
pleased that Clifton born, Ben Whishaw
returns again as Q, a role he is certainly
making his own.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

BY KRISTINE WILKINSON-HUGHES @EUPHONIOUSHONEY

January 1st is a massive motivator for me. A chance to shed the skin of the previous
year off and start fresh. 365 chances to laugh, create, challenge myself. I want to
get the projects in my head out onto paper and into song. I want to stop taking my
body for granted. I want to treat my mind better, too. Stop beating myself up. Set
a goal and if you miss a day, just get back on the horse. I recently read an article
about forming habits dont miss two days in a row. Two becomes three becomes a
month. You clearly want this goal or do you? Is it a goal worth pursuing? I think
in 2015 we must learn to walk away from the things that are just the way I am and
focus on the things we feel are really important. An untidy house? Thats not going
on your gravestone. But maybe theres a screenplay or a painting or a poem or a trip
to Nepal eating away at you. Get going! (I HIGHLY recommend seeing any show at
the Funny Festival to inspire you! February 5 8, The Place Theatre. Gloriator and
The Memoirs of Modger Morrish are a must see. Very talented women!!)

So what else is in store for film

lovers this year?
Youd have to have been in a galaxy
far, far, away to have not heard about Star
Wars: Episode 7, which is due for release
in December. Yes, a long wait for die
hard followers of the force, expect lots of
teasers and hype building over the next
few months; lets hope it lives up to it.
Other big blockbusters on their way,
include Terminator: Genysys, The
Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jurassic
World, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay,
Part 2, Tomorrowland and Furious 7.
But it doesnt end there...
Big Hero 6, Ant Man, Kingsman:
The Secret Service, The Fantastic Four,
The Hateful Eight, Ted 2, Hot Tub Time
Machine 2, Inside Out and Mad Max:
Fury Road all promise something special
for Hollywood fans of all ages, but British
film fans need not feel left out either.
Ex Machina, is out this month and
looks set to raise the bar for the rest of the
year, but Far From The Madding Crowd,
High-Rise, Monsters: Dark Continent,
Suffragette and many more will, Im
sure, keep up and show that British cinema
continues to be a world contender. Lets,
however, not mention 50 Shades of Grey.

GARDENING

BY JANE PERRONE

If there is a low point in my year, it invariably hits

in February. I have a survival strategy for this most
inhospitable of months:
A constant supply of hot water bottles, and frothy milk cut with
cocoa powder and half a teaspoon of turmeric powder (try it
before you scoff). But its also about a dose of plant therapy,
too. Camellias, winter honeysuckle (Lonicera purpusii) and
snowdrops: these are my life ring flowers, defying Februarys
gloom with a bolt of colour when all else is dead and dank.
Winter honeysuckle comes first, usually in time for
Christmas. Its delicate creamy flowers waft a perfume thats
one part lemon meringue pie to two parts Jo Malone candle
[mmmmm Ed). Cut a few branches to bring inside and theyll
scent the room. If you dont have some in your own garden,
visit the specimens in the flower beds near St. Peters church (I
am not suggesting for a moment that you filch some, but check
if you like the smell before you buy one for your own garden).
Theyre unassuming in all other seasons, but will tolerate much
hacking once established if they overstep their bounds.
Camellias, meanwhile, converted me to pink flowers. I always
feared it was a bit cheesy for my garden (I know, I really should
get over myself). But then I caught a camellia outside a house
in Castle Road (sadly grubbed up a while back) in all its rosy
glory, and all questions of taste fell away. It depends on the
variety you pick and the severity of the winter whether your
camellia flowers in February - opt for Desire or Elegans for
the earliest blooms.
Camellias prefer a slightly acidic soil: add sulphur chips to
the planting hole and mulch with grapefruit halves and pine
needles to keep the pH low. If you only have a window box or a
row of pots to play with, snowdrops are the answer. Buy some
in pots in flower now (aka in the green) - transplant half into
your containers and keep half somewhere cool inside to stare atthe tiny white bells are a living sculpture.

JOBS FOR FEBRUARY

Clove love If like me you failed to get garlic in the ground in
autumn, this is your final call. Pick a mild day and make sure you
pick a well drained spot - raised beds are ideal.
Sow hot You have my permission to get chilli seeds started now,
but only if you can offer a super-sunny windowsill and the warm
fug of a heated propagator.
Eton mess ahoy! Mild days are also ideal for planting currant,
raspberry and gooseberry bushes, and this is the month garden
centres start selling them off cheap, so grab a bargain.

ITS BLOOMING GREAT TO BE BACK.

ARCHITECTURAL ILLUSIONIST

FEBRUARY 2015

TENNIS REVOLUTION
BY NEIL FRANKEL, DIRECTOR OF TENNIS AT RIVERSIDE TENNIS CLUB

A combination of art and engineering, creativity and craft make up the visually outstanding
work by noted Bedford artist Alex Chinneck.
Speaking exclusively to Bedford College students at the South Bank Arts Centre this
January, Alex explained the technology behind his sliding, melting, floating and upside
down buildings that have garnered critical acclaim worldwide. The Guardian called
Chinneck a master of architectural illusion
Alex was a student of Bedford Modern School and is still in touch with the inspiring art
teacher who led him on the road to his extraordinary career. He gave the Bedford College
students some exclusive glimpses of works in the pipeline which are planned for 2015 and
beyond at the presentation on Wednesday 14th January.
Said one member of the audience: Alex explained his work with clarity and enthusiasm
while at the same time getting across the huge challenges sometimes faced in turning a
great idea into a reality. He is an inspiration.

THE
LAST
WORD
BY REVEREND SHARON
GRENHAM-TOZE, PRISON
CHAPLAIN, HMP BEDFORD

Every now and then events occur which seem to galvanise vast swathes of people. The attack in Paris at the offices of satirical magazine
Charlie Hebdo was one such event in the hours afterwards it seemed as if millions around the world were holding a light in the
darkness, determined that the dreadful acts of a few would not dampen the freedom of many. As the Clanger goes to press, its good to be
reminded of the importance of being able to express differing views and opinions in the media and in daily life, without undue restriction, and certainly without fear.
Weve seen many uprisings across the globe over the years from the anti apartheid movement in South Africa, to Solidarity in
Warsaw; from the Arab Spring to the protests in Hong Kong. What they have in common is the yearning, in fact the demand, for
freedom. Freedom for people to engage in business, in education, in thought, in conversation. An individuals suffering can spark the
indignation of thousands, and the power of thousands can change the lives of individuals.
Just as the masses took to Twitter to declare Je Suis Charlie, so, over the years, in other ways, its right that people have stood
together and declared we are Black South Africans, poor workers, or budding democracies. Because we cant truly be free ourselves
where others are not.
I would like to think that we can carry this a step further though that we cant truly be content until all have, not only freedom of
thought and expression, but also access to healthcare, sanitation, education, shelter, safety. These basics of life are denied still to far too
many people. Because theyre far away, or not like us, its easy for their needs, their lack, to slip from our attention, or seem less important than our own pressing personal issues. Lets refocus our gaze! Working together to recognize and restore human dignity in each
individual person will, in the end, be more powerful than any ideology of hatred and coercion.
Je suis Charlie I am Charlie but I am also each man, woman and child longing for a better life.
