Fuel Gas Methane Number (MN)

Is a scale for evaluation of the knock resistance of the fuel


Knock is the name given to the noise which is transmitted through the engine
structure when essentially spontaneous ignition of a proportion of the end-gas
ahead of the propagating flame front occurs

Higher MN means better knock resistance


Can be calculated, when gas composition is known
Higher amount of heavier hydrocarbons decrease MN
Higher amount of carbondioxide and nitrogen increase MN
If MN is too low, the engine derating is required

Fuel Gas Lower Heating Value (LHV)

LHV corresponds to the energy contents of the gas. If the LHV is lower
than required, the engine output has to be adjusted or a higher gas
pressure to the engine is needed.
To compensate low heating value:
Derating engine output
Higher gas feed pressure

The combustion air system, comprises the following equipment:
Air intake filter, either built on or externally mounted
Compressor(s) (on the turbocharger)
HT-charge air cooler(s) for engine with 2-stage charge air cooling
LT-charge air cooler(s).
Charge air pressure is controlled by Wastegate as Air/Fuel Ratio
Controller
