This
Child is destined for the fall and
rising of many in Israel, and for a

Concerning the spread and celebration of the Nativity of Christ, St John

Chrysostom said: Magnificent and noble trees, when planted in the
ground, shortly attain great heights and become heavily laden with
fruit. So it is with this day...
And so it is with the Great Feast Day of the Meeting or Presentation of our
Lord Jesus Christ at the Temple in Jerusalem.
In the beginning, this day was discussed among Christians but the solemn
celebration began from the period of the great Emperor Justinian.
During the reign of this Emperor, a great pestilence afflicted the people in
Constantinople and vicinity so that approximately 5000 people
perished daily.
At the same time a terrible earthquake occurred in Antioch.
Seeing the weakness of mankinds ability to preven these devastating
catastrophes, the Emperor in consultation with the Patriarch ordered
a period of Fasting and Prayer throughout the entire Empire.
And, on the Feast of the Meeting or Presentation of Christ at the Temple,
great processions throughout the towns and villages took place so that
our Lord God might show Compassion for His people.
And truly, our Lord heard our Prayers, for the epidemics and earthquakes
ceased at once.
This occurred in 544 and from that time onwards, the Feast of the Meeting
or Presentation of Christ at the Temple began to be celebrated as a
major Feast of our Saviour.
The Tree in time indeed grew and began to bright forth abundant Fruit!

And it had been revealed to him by the

Holy Spirit that he would not see
death before he had seen the Lords
Christ. And he went, by the Spirit,
into the Temple.
And
when the Parents brought in the

Child Jesus, to do for Him according
to the Custom of the Law, he took
Him up in his arms and Blessed God
and said: Now Thou art letting Thy
servant O Master, depart in Peace,
according to Thy Word; for my eyes
have seen Thy Salvation, which Thou
hast prepared before the face of all
peoples - a Light to bring Revelation
to the Gentiles, and the Glory of Thy
People, Israel.
