TheHouseofCommonsofBritainon3February2015votedinfavouroftheBillthatamendstheHumanFertilisationandEmbryologyAct(HFEA),
1990toallowcreationofbabieswithDNAfromthreepeople.
Thecontroversialmitochondriadonationproceduresaw382to128votesinfavour.Theprocedureincludesreceivingofasmallamountofhealthyso
calledMitochondrialDNA(mDNA)fromwomandonorintotheusualnuclearDNAfromitsmotherandfather.
Now the bill needs to be passed by the House of Lords, the upper chamber of the Parliament, so as to implement the mitochondria donation
procedure.
Ifthebillispassed,thentheBritainwillbecomethefirstcountryintheworldtoallowtheprocedure.
SignificanceoftheBill
The move is aimed at preventing serious inherited diseases being passed on from mother to child. This procedure will help to give a permanent
changetothehereditaryproblemsthathaspasseddownthroughthegenerations.
ThischangeinIVFlawcouldhelp2500womenofreproductiveageinBritainwithhereditarymitochondrialdiseases.
Procedureofdonatingthemitochondria
Theprocedureofdonatingthemitochondriaincludestwodifferentprocesses.
Procedure1:
Firstly,anembryoiscreatedfromthetwoeggsfertilisedwithspermfromintendedparentsandtheotherfromthedonors.
Thenthepronucleithatcontainsgeneticinformationisremovedfrombothembryosbutonlytheparentsarekept.
Lastly,ahealthyembryoiscreatedbyaddingtheparents'pronucleitothedonorembryo,whichisfinallyimplantedintothewomb.
Procedure2:
First,eggsarecollectedfromboththemothers,namelythemotherwithdamagedmitochondriaandadonorwithhealthymitochondria.
Then,themajorityofthegeneticmaterialisremovedfromboththeeggs.
Lastly,themothersgeneticmaterialisinsertedintothedonoregg,whichcanbefertilisedbysperm.
Whichkindofdefectscanbetreatedthroughtheprocedure?
Generally,defectsinthemitochondriaresultsindiseaseslikemusculardystrophy,heart,kidneyandliverfailureandseveralmuscleweaknesses.But
thetechniquewouldpreventchildrenfromcarryingonthehereditaryproblemsasthehumaneggorembryowouldbealteredbeforebeingtransferred
intothemother.

Critics claim that the technique crosses a fundamental scientific boundary and the changes made to the embryos will be passed on the future
