Tough markets sometimes bring out the best in companies

he oil and gas industry can be a

roller coaster at times. How low are
the prices going to fall? When will
they climb again? Will operations slow
down? Will they not slow down?
Those questions have been posed over
the last few months by the industry itself
and by various news outlets, but there is no
easy answer to any of them.
As I write this column in early
December, the WTI price of crude is sitting
at $67.20 per barrel, Brent oil prices are at
$70.18 and both are continuing to drop.
OPEC met on Nov. 27 and decided not
to change output levels, which left the
industry in even more limbo.
Industry experts say that U.S. shale oil
needs to sell at $85 or $90 a barrel to be
profitable. IHS Global Standards, an oil and
gas information and analytical service, says
that the $90 figure only applies to less than
20 percent of all shale oilfields. A study by
the group found that about 80 percent of
the shale oil estimated to be pumped in
2015 will still be profitable at between $50
and $69 a barrel.

Eberhart in a blog he wrote for Gas, Oil &
Mining Contractor in late November, the
industry has a better grip on exploration
In early November oil and gas

exploration activity decreased in North
Dakota and increased in Montana relative
to a month earlier; production remained
at record levels, the Federal Reserve
Bank says.
This isnt the first time market forces
have pushed crude prices down. In the
early 1980s new production from the North
Sea, Alaskas North Slope and Mexico
drove prices down to $10 a barrel. From the
mid-1980s to September 2003, the price of
a barrel of crude, after being adjusted for
inflation, was less than $25.
So hang on this could be a wild roller coaster ride for the next
few months. Its also an opportunity for smaller companies
in the industry to show they can make it through the
tough times and are here to stay.

blog. Im still bullish on the U.S. shale
boom.
Eberhart isnt the only oil industry
professional saying that. In a story by
KRIS-TV in Corpus Christi, Texas, Orion
Drilling CEO and President Wayne Squires
says companies wont feel the effects of the
price drop right away.

in the story.
According to a report
compiled by the Federal
Reserve Bank of Chicago,

if you cant keep pace other contractors are ready
to sprint over to take your place.

Anyone who thinks thats an exaggeration can talk to Kenneth

Schumacher, the owner of Energy Waste Rentals & Service, headquartered in Yoakum, Texas. Starting from scratch, he has built a successful
portable restroom operation that mostly caters to drilling companies.
And it all started because he filled a vacuum left by another contractor
who provided poor customer service.
Schumacher entered the field about 30 years ago when a friend
who owned an oilfield drilling company expressed dissatisfaction
with a trash-trailer company hed hired to collect garbage at drilling
sites. Schumacher responded by starting his own trash-trailer venture
in 1986, and that eventually led him to establish Energy Waste.
My friend wasnt getting trailers when he needed them, Schumacher recalls of his entry into refuse collection and portable restrooms.
Sometimes it took two or three days to get new [empty] trailers. And
once those trailers were full there was no place to put trash so
between the raccoons and the wind, it was creating big messes. So I
asked him if hed rent some trash trailers from me if I built some and
he said yes.
A couple months later the same associate asked Schumacher
if hed be willing to provide portable restrooms, too. Schumacher
complied by buying 28 restrooms and a small slide-in tank unit to
service them.
Energy Waste Rentals has grown considerably since then. It now
employs 70 people and owns nearly 2,000 restrooms and other equipment. It deploys 18 vacuum trucks and eight slide-in units and operates branch yards in Cuero and Cotulla in south Texas; Mertzon,
Monahans and Pecos in west Texas; and New Castle, Pa.

Schumacher graduated from college with an agricultural education degree and taught vocational agriculture as a high school teacher for eight years
before he and his wife, Jacque, purchased her familys office supply business,
Dewitt Poth & Son in Yoakum, in 1996 (they still own the store). He had
also worked many summers for his late father, Marvin, who was a heavyequipment contractor.
But no matter what business hes in, Schumacher follows a simple formula for success: listen to what customers want and deliver
the goods.
Even though weve gotten fairly large, we started with nothing and I
mean nothing, he says. Like any business, whether its in construction or
business supplies, if you want to grow, it all comes down to customer service.
Some people talk the game and some people actually play the game.
If youre supposed to have a cleaning truck out to a drilling site
twice a week, it needs to be there, he continues. The oilfield industry is
very demanding. If we get a call at 6 a.m. and someone needs a restroom
by 7 a.m., weve got to get it going theres usually not a lot of notice or
advance warning.

In the end its all about listening to customers and providing what they
need and doing what you promised you would do, he adds. And you need
to do the little things, like being on time and cleaning the outside of the restrooms as well as the inside. Its the little things that differentiate you from
everybody else.
FLEET AND INVENTORY
Nine vacuum trucks built by Satellite Industries Inc. on Hino chassis
form the core of Energy Wastes fleet. Four of the trucks feature steel tanks
(1,100 gallons wastewater/500 gallons freshwater) and the others carry aluminum tanks (1,500 gallons waste/500 gallons freshwater). All are equipped
with Masport Inc. pumps and pressure washers. Schumacher says he buys
steel tanks for trucks that travel more frequently on rough roads.
Schumacher says that when it comes to tank size, he prefers to strike a
balance between having enough capacity to minimize disposal runs, but not
so big that they require his drivers to obtain a commercial drivers license.
I prefer not to run big rigs down the road, he notes. Our pump trucks
are just the right size they can dump in the morning and clean all day,
then be ready to go the next morning. In addition, bigger trucks are harder
to get around on fracking sites where theres not a lot of room to maneuver.
Energy Waste also runs five Ford F-550s and four Dodge 5500 trucks
equipped with 700-gallon waste/200-gallon freshwater stainless steel tanks
built by Satellite with Conde pumps from Westmoor Ltd. To conserve truckbed space, tanks on these trucks are mounted cross wise, parallel to the cab.
With this configuration and a raised liftgate, the truck can transport four restrooms and still tow a trash trailer. Moreover, all nine trucks feature four-wheel

drive and dually rear axles to better handle muddy conditions. We operate in
as tough an environment as you can imagine, Schumacher points out.
In addition, Energy Waste also runs eight slide-in units mounted on
Ford F-350 dually pickups. Made by Satellite, the 350-gallon waste/200gallon freshwater tanks are made of stainless steel; the trucks rely on
Masport pumps.
Rounding out the equipment inventory are three nine-stall and eight
two-stall restroom trailers from Satellite and Rich
Specialty Trailers; about 125 Satellite Breeze handwash stations; more than 200 trash trailers made by
the local Griffin Enterprises; and eight flatbed trailers
built by McKee Technologies Inc. (used for hauling
up to 10 restrooms per trailer).
The company also owns about 1,800 restrooms, mostly made by Satellite
and some by PolyJohn Enterprises and PolyPortables LLC. Schumacher says
he prefers to buy one brand of restrooms (usually Satellite Maxims) whenever
possible because its easier to stock repair parts; they all load and balance
the same and fit on the same sized skids; and customers know exactly what
theyre going to receive. All restrooms feature hand sanitizers.

COMPANY MOVES FORWARD

BY GIVING BACK
Paying it forward. Giving back to the community. No matter how you
prefer to describe charitable giving by businesses, one thing is certain, says
Kenneth Schumacher: Its better to give than it is to receive.
The owner of Energy Waste Rentals & Service has been providing
free or discounted portable restroom services to many deserving groups
everything from churches to fire departments to schools in the Eagle
Ford Shale region for 29 years.
If we get a call from a church or a nonprofit group, we either discount
the rate or offer free service, Schumacher says. Ive always believed in
giving back in being a good corporate citizen. Its just a philosophy
under which weve always operated we feel blessed by our success, so we
want to give something back.
In recognition of the companys philanthropic efforts, the South
Texas Energy & Economic Roundtable (STEER), based in San Antonio,
honored Energy Waste with a 2013 Eagle Ford Excellence Award in the
community and social investment category for companies with less than
250 employees. Its the first year that STEER handed out the awards; the
groups mission is to coordinate communications and public advocacy for
the oil and natural gas industries in south Texas.
The award acknowledges the efforts of companies that preserve
the environment, contribute to the communities in which they work and
promote workplace safety. Judges included representatives from the
Alamo Area Council of Governments, CPS Energy and the University of

We felt like it was a big honor, Schumacher says. It was very nice to
be recognized for something weve been doing for a long time. We dont
do what we do to get honored, but to get recognized honestly, it really
made our employees feel good.

Because drilling sites are so
remote, it helps to own trucks that
can do more than one job, Schumacher points out.
We try to minimize travel
time and the number of trips for deliveries and pickups, he says, noting that
most oilfield restrooms require cleaning either twice a week, every other day
or every day. A lot of times the frack moves from point A to point B and we
have to go out there and move the same restroom just 2 miles down the road.
So if we pick up a restroom [with a slide-in unit] we can suck it out and then
haul it empty. Whenever possible, I like to bring the restrooms back to the
yard to fully sanitize them, but sometimes we only have time to move them
from one site to the other.
Energy Waste relies on GPS units to boost driver safety and increase
efficiency. The company also uses TrakQuip software, made by Corporate
Services LLC, to better track oilfield equipment rentals another offshoot
business for Energy Waste.
At some point our customers asked us to supply light towers [for rent],
Schumacher explains. From there we eased into rentals over time. We decided to become a full-fledged rental company about six years ago when
the fracking boom hit the Eagle Ford Shale, we found our customers preferred
to use just one vendor to bring in the whole package.
BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
Schumacher says he wouldnt have considered starting a rental business
without long-standing customer relationships. Our customers basically told
us theyd use us if we had the equipment to rent and that stemmed directly from relationships weve built over the years. I trust them as much as
they trust me, he says. Weve all been good for each other.
But that doesnt mean it was easy getting up and running. We struggled
over the years, he says. We had to learn the logistics of the business and
deal with all the financial aspects of buying and financing equipment. Its not
all roses all the time.
But things got easier as Energy Waste established itself. As Schumacher
puts it, It takes a while for people to see that your word is good and youll do

Our business increased a lot

The firm currently has two registered
land surveyors on staff and two survey

right-of-way, easements and as-built
records, freshwater, salt water, crude and
natural gas pipeline construction staking,
well pad construction staking, and draining
and erosion control.

The oil boom has allowed Ames
Engineering to expand the business services
and activity sectors while also adding key
employees.
In August 2014 Ames hired Serena
Christianson as marketing and public
relations director; Cassie Klemetson as
office manager; and Jacob Porter as a CADD
technician. Two months later the company
brought in Kevin Ralphs as project manager
and Robert Wilson as a surveyor.

prominence or a record deal for
that matter until his independently
released debut single, Chillin It,
started climbing the charts in 2013.
It eventually reached the top spot
on the Billboard Hot Country Songs
chart, but Swindell knows theres
a good chance some people in the
audience will be unfamiliar with his
material. And hes fine with that.
Sometimes its good to get in
front of a new crowd that might not
know a lot about you, Swindell says.
You get to try to make them a fan by
the end of the night. I love challenges
like that.
Im going to get up there and do
what I do. Im looking forward to it.

A FELLOW GEORGIAN
Though still a newcomer to the country music scene, Swindell knows
what it takes to put on a good show. He went on tour with Luke Bryan in 2014
and prior to that spent a considerable amount of time on the road with him,
selling merchandise and writing songs for his fellow fraternity brother from
Georgia Southern University as Bryan evolved into a country music star.
For however long hes out there on stage, hes going to give it all hes got.
Thats something Ive learned, Swindell says. People spend their hard-earned
money and their time to come see us, so you want to give them the best show
you can.
He says Bryan was also a big influence on his decision to launch a career
in country music in the first place.

The first time I heard his music was over 10 years ago, and I thought he
had it, Swindell says. Even then I was like, This guy is going to be huge.
Hes from the same part of Georgia but I didnt know him until I had gotten to
college and he had already moved to Nashville. Having a guy from just a few
minutes from where I grew up writing songs I thought were amazing, that gave
me the confidence. Hey, if he can do it, maybe I can do this. It really gave me
the confidence to go after it and just focus and work hard.
FROM SONGWRITING TO THE STAGE
Swindell says he has been a fan of country music all his life, but he didnt
start singing until he was in college and began playing the local bars. After

receiving the merchandise sales gig on Bryans team after graduation, Swindell
started to get into songwriting. He wrote Bryans Just a Sip, Beer in the
Headlights, Roller Coaster, Out Like That, Im Hungover, Im in Love
with the Girl, Love in a College Town, Shore Thing, Shake the Sand and
The Sand I Brought to the Beach. Hes also written songs for Craig Campbell,
Thomas Rhett, Scotty McCreery and Florida Georgia Line.
Following the success of Chillin It, Swindell received a record deal. The
first single off his debut album, Hope You Get Lonely Tonight, which was
co-written with Florida Georgia Line, also became a hit. It reached No. 1 on
the Billboard Country Airplay chart.

the end of the night. I love challenges like that.

I didnt even have a record deal when we wrote that song, Swindell
says. I always thought they were going to record it. The second they said it
was cool that I recorded it, I told them, This will be a single for me one day
if yall let me record it. The writing process was fun. Theyre good friends of
mine and Im so proud of all their success. Its cool to get to have a little bit of
each others success.
With his first two singles each topping the charts, Swindell says theres
pressure to continue the trend. But he doesnt mind.
You come out with a No. 1 single and then you have to follow that up
and you get fortunate and have two No. 1s. Then you have to follow that up.
But I think thats a good thing, you know? The streaks not going to go on
forever and Im realistic, but were going to try. I want to give the fans and radio
the best songs I can, and I think [reaching No. 1] is a good goal. If you dont
reach the No. 1 spot at least you gave it a shot.
THE YEAR AHEAD
His debut album, two straight No. 1 singles and a nomination in the Best
New Artist of the Year category at the Country Music Association Awards have
made the past year quite the start to Swindells country music career. For the
coming year, hes already scheduled to join Jason Aldean for the second leg of
the Burn It Down tour beginning in February.
Jason is another huge influence and theres another Georgia boy so, man,
I couldnt have picked anyone better to go on tour with. Thats going to be an
awesome way to start off 2015, Swindell says.
That same month he will be taking a break from the tour to play the
more intimate Sagamore Ballroom venue at the Indiana Convention Center for
WWETT attendees. Swindell hopes to add a little pleasure to the business

Cole Swindell may be the big draw at the WWETT Shows Industry
Appreciation Party on Wednesday, Feb. 25, but he wont be the only
highlight that night.
It all begins at 5 p.m. when the doors open to the partys new
venue, the Sagamore Ballroom on the second floor of the Indiana
Convention Center, and the 25-cent tap beers start flowing. The
evenings first musical act, Blackjack Billy, will take the stage an hour
later. The four-member Nashville-based band is best known for their
2013 debut single The Booze Cruise.
The winner of the WWETT truck giveaway will be announced
shortly after Blackjack Billys set, at approximately 7 p.m. All registered
WWETT attendees are automatically entered into the contest for
the tricked-out 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4x4 Extended Cab,
or alternately $35,000 cash, being given away in celebration of the
shows 35th anniversary. Twelve contestants will be randomly selected
beforehand and invited to participate in the event that will determine
a winner.
The party will conclude with a performance from Swindell, who is
set to take the stage at 7:30 p.m.

Tankers provide safer environment for drivers, maximize payload capacity

y outward appearances, the equipment that Savage Services uses to

haul production water for a major exploration company in Utahs
Uintah Basin looks like typical tanker trucks with pup trailers. But
in reality theyre highly customized vehicles tailored specifically to play an
integral role in a supply-chain logistics solution that boosts efficiency and
significantly reduces hauling-related expenses.
The customer contracted with Savage, a supply-chain solutions company,
to transport more than 460 million gallons of production water annually,
gathered from more than 2,600 drilling sites. Based in Midvale, Utah, Savage
took the somewhat unusual step of investing in the design and production of
28 customized truck-mounted tankers and 10 pup trailers, all built by Polar
Corp., around 2009, says Ray Alt, senior vice president, equipment solutions
at Savage.
Its unusual in the industry, but not for us, says Alt about investing
in customized equipment for a specific customer. Its actually a part of our
strategy to look at different and better ways of doing things and always bring
value to our customers.
To develop an efficient solution, Savage shunned the use of standardsize tanks and instead worked with Polar to engineer a system that
would maximize payload capacity yet still comply with bridge law weight

restrictions. Employee safety and environmental protection also ranked high

on the companys list of concerns.
The result: a unique five-axle truck and pup-trailer combo that features
a 3,600-gallon vacuum tank mounted on a Mack GU813 truck and a
3,000-gallon vacuum tank atop a pup trailer. A vacuum pump mounted on
the truck made by Masport Inc. provides 400 cfm of vacuum power to both
tanks, Alt says.
In bridge formula states like Utah, the length of a vehicle as well as the
number of axles and how theyre spaced determines gross vehicle weights.
As such, Polar engineers tweaked the axle spacing on the units to attain

pounds, Alt says.
The tanks are designed specifically for
this project, Alt explains. We started with the
tare weight, then calculated how much product
we could haul and sized the tanks accordingly.
Its all about efficiency there was no need for
larger tanks because wed just be hauling extra
steel around.
For maximum longevity and reduced
long-term maintenance, Savage opted for more
expensive stainless steel tanks that can better withstand corrosive production
water. It cost us more capital up front, but the payoff is additional years of
service and reduced maintenance, Alt says.
Savage also asked that the tanks meet United States Department of
Transportation Code 407 standards that, among other things, require sealed
hatches and valves that prevent bulk liquids from spilling during rollover
accidents. That move also improves employee safety because operators dont
have to climb ladders onto the top of the tanks to seal valves and hatches;
instead that process is automated, he points out.

One of the systems biggest benefits: The exploration company no longer
needs to send an employee out to stick the tank, or check the productionwater level in large holding tanks located by well sites, then phone in the
results. Instead we were able to integrate our customers measuring system on
each tank with our own communication network to transmit that information
in real time via radio and cellphone, Alt says. Equipment in each truck is
connected to that system, too.
Were always concerned about what can we do differently with equipment and logistics. We also use proprietary logistics
and tracking software that monitors the [water] inventory on each well site and tracks the movement of all product
from the minute its picked up to when its delivered.

The trucks also are equipped with roll-stability technology [developed

by Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC], Alt says. Its more common
now, but at the time it was the first roll-stability system put on a Mack truck
in this application [with a truck and a pup trailer]. If a driver goes too fast
around a curve, the roll-stability system senses it and applies the brakes.
Were a big believer in this technology.
Along with the Polar equipment, Savage relies on tankers from Beall
Corp., Heil Trailer International, J&L and Brenner Tank LLC (part of Walker
Group Holdings), as well as tractor cabs made by Kenworth (part of PACCAR
Inc.) and Mack Trucks Inc.
In addition, Savage took a broader view of water management that went
beyond a typical move-it-and-dispose-it-approach. The company developed
a software and mobile hardware system that features a Global Positioning
System unit that provides Savage with actual and analytical data, such as the
number of barrels of water being loaded on a real-time basis and when trucks
arrive and depart from each well site, Alt says.
Were always concerned about what can we do differently with
equipment and logistics, Alt explains. We also use proprietary logistics and
tracking software that monitors the [water] inventory on each well site and

per barrel of water because the customer doesnt have to send someone out to
physically perform a measurement, Alt adds.
In addition, employees no longer need to file hundreds of paper reports,
effectively turning a very labor-intensive, error-prone process into a paperless,
real-time and more accurate system. As such, instead of waiting weeks for
reports to be compiled, the customer can easily view metrics such as how
much water is being moved, the productivity on an hourly basis and the costs
all in real time, Alt points out.
Moreover, the customer was able to cut daily truck shifts in half, reduce
man-hours in ticketing and invoicing by 92 percent and decrease wastewaterhauling costs by 20 percent, Alt says. GOMC

FACTOR
Oil producers find a new revenue stream while going greener, but it comes with a risk

IT WAS SO SIMPLE YEARS AGO.

Whenever oil producers had natural gas vapors building up in the top
of holding tanks, they simply vented or flared; after all, they were in the oil
business not the gas business. Today those options are becoming less and
less available because of environmental regulations, while at the same time
the market for that free gas is expanding.
The EPA has issued a number of regulations in recent years monitoring
the emissions from hydrocarbon production and storage facilities. These
regulations, and the fines that accompany them, have led to new innovations
in the industry. Recovering those vapors and selling them to gas purchasers
offers two solutions at once: regulatory compliance and new profit streams.
VAPOR RECOVERY UNITS
This was all made possible by the introduction of vapor recovery units
(VRUs). Liquid hydrocarbons emit natural gas vapors, especially when
confined in a storage unit. A VRU pulls these vapors from the tank and
separates the natural gas, which is pumped to a sales point. The result is a
new profit center for the oil company and a cleaner environment.
The environmental impact is a major concern. Over 26 billion cubic
feet of methane is lost each year from storage tanks. While CO2 emission
reduction gets the most attention, natural gas has more than 20 times the
impact as a greenhouse gas. No wonder federal and local governments are
closing the window on venting.
The economics of VRUs makes its own case. The equipment is modular
and requires minimum site preparation. Reduced emissions result in
immediate regulatory savings while the sale of natural gas provides a new
revenue stream. Most installations recoup their investment in six to 12 months
then come the profits from high-quality natural gas. In fact, recaptured
natural gas has a higher BTU content than normal pipeline-quality gas.
Up to 95 percent of the hydrocarbon vapors can be captured.
While oil storage tanks provide the most common opportunity for
recovering vapors, some companies pull methane from water-holding tanks
using an advanced oil recovery technique called water flooding. Water is
injected back into the ground to float the oil to produce more. When the
water comes back up after injection it is stored in a holding tank where the
gas vapors can also accumulate.

Heat can also be a factor in pushing methane out of liquids, especially

in warm-weather areas such as Texas. Regardless of the tanks being used, oil
storage or water storage, the methane vapors provide a new revenue source.
THE OXYGEN RISK
But as with many solutions, there is a potential risk. In this case the risk
comes in the form of oxygen (O2) entering through the VRU.
O2 is an absolutely horrible thing to have in any gas stream, says
Johnny Jones, an automated systems manager for Croft Automation, which
builds measurement and analytical systems for midstream and transportation
facilities. First of all it is corrosive. Secondly, as gas is put under pressure,
if there is O2 present it can cause a chemical reaction. Third, you cant sell
gas if it has an O2 level that is above specs; you are forced to flare the entire
stream. Once O2 is in the gas there is no economical way to remove it. The
whole stream is now useless.
How does oxygen get into a system? It turns out there are many ways.
The leading culprits are equipment failure and operator errors such as leaving
a hatch open. Any time there is work done on the wellhead or pipes you can
get a hit of O2, claims Jones. The nature of VRUs includes a series of pipe
connections and fittings. Air can leak in at any of those points. Add to that
the possibility of improperly installed or maintained equipment and you have
a formula for leaks.
THE NATURAL GAS ANALYZER ROLE
All of which leads to the lynchpin of the system, the analyzer. Its the gas
analyzers job to read the gas in the line and make certain the O2 content meets
the tight specs required by the purchaser. Without
an analyzer there is no way to know how much O2 is
in the line. Traditionally, O2 analyzers came with an
inherent problem: They were not compatible with a
sour stream that might also have H2S (sulfer) or CO2
in the line from the VRU.

The fact is oil wells have always produced oil and natural gas. For most
of the history of oil production it was assumed the gas had no value. But
regulatory forces and higher gas prices have changed all that.
For oil producers, VRUs have created a new chapter in environmental
responsibility and revenue streams. But critical to this new technology is a
robust analyzer that ensures safety and process control. GOMC

Many oil companies have turned to optical

analyzers that utilize a technique called fluorescence
quenching. This technology has the advantage of
quick response time and immunity to contaminants
in the stream. In some cases it is quick enough to
reveal which VRU is leaking if a network of VRUs
is being used at the same site. This is done by
identifying the O2 spike to a specific VRU as it comes
online.
Contaminants in the stream are always a
problem for traditional sensors that rely on contact
with the actual gas stream. Any contaminant can
cause a traditional sensor to give a false reading,
and in the case of H2S it can damage or destroy the
sensor. Optical analyzers are immune to even high
amounts of H2S.
Another advantage can come from knowing the
nitrogen/oxygen mix in a stream, adds Sam Miller
of analyzer manufacturer SpectraSensors. That way
you can tell if the leak is coming from the air or from
somewhere else.
Vapor recovery units are here to stay. An
increasing number of oil producers have learned that
it is the most efficient method to cut regulatory fines

EIAs annual report shows that natural gas production has increased

hen the U.S. Energy Information Administration released its

Natural Gas Annual in November 2014, there werent too many surprises,
but it did show record natural gas production and consumption levels in the U.S.
According to the report, the total U.S.
natural gas gross withdrawals reached
a new high of 82 billion cubic feet per
day (Bcf/d) in 2013 with shale gas wells
becoming the largest source of total natural
gas production.
Gross withdrawals from shale gas
wells increased from 5 Bcf/d in 2007 to 33
Bcf/d in 2013, representing 40 percent of
total natural gas production and surpassing
production from nonshale natural gas wells.
Wells drilled into open coal seams
or coal beds had gross withdrawals of 4
Bcf/d in 2013 while oil wells had gross
withdrawals of 15 Bcf/d and other gas
wells (other than shale gas wells) had gross
withdrawals of 31 Bcf/d.
Pennsylvania became the secondlargest shale gas producing state,

producing 8 Bcf/d, with almost all the
growth coming from the Marcellus play.
Louisiana produced a minimal amount of
shale gas in 2007, but it produced 4 Bcf/d
in 2013. All of this growth came from the
Haynesville play.
Arkansas became the fourth-largest
shale gas producing state, accounting for
2.8 Bcf/d or 9 percent of U.S. shale gas
production. All of its shale gas production
growth came from the Fayetteville play.

industry has added 2 Bcf/d of capacity in
the Northeast. More pipeline projects were
completed between 2012 and 2014 than in
previous years.

Pennsylvania became the second-largest shale gas producing

state, producing 8 Bcf/d, with almost all the growth

NEW TECHNOLOGIES
New technology has allowed
producers to shift production to resources
that are now easier to reach and have lower
drilling costs.
The natural gas pipeline industry is
planning to modify its systems to allow
bidirectional flow to move up to 8.3 Bcf/d
out of the Northeast, according to the EIA.
As of 2013, the industry had the capacity
to move 25 Bcf/d of natural gas from

Canadas oil industry seeing growth, job creation and technological improvements heading into 2015

here are plenty of negative news

stories out there about the
oilsands, but if you dig around
there is a lot of good news to be found.
According to several reports from
late 2014, the oilsands industry could see
growth in 2015. Alberta is leading the way
in job creation, and oil producers in the
oilsands are working on ways to cut back
on pollution.
GROWTH IN THE OILSANDS

The Canadian oilsands industry
looks to grow and increase capacity in
2015, according to a new report from
CanOils, a firm that completes annual
and quarterly data and analysis on the
oil industry.
According to The Canadian Oil
Sands Outlook 2015, the industry is set
to produce over 3 million barrels of crude
per day by the end of 2015.
Assuming all scheduled new projects
and expansions actually come onstream,
next year will see a 16.6 percent increase
in overall production capacity compared
with 2014, CanOils says.
This of course will be affected by
delays and cancellations, says CanOils.
However, a significant rise will happen
nonetheless.
The report says that non-Canadian
companies will control 38.9 percent of the
new total capacity.
GOOD PAYING JOBS
John Rose, Edmontons chief
economist, says Albertas capital city is
the job creation capital of Canada and a lot
of that is thanks to the oilsands industry.

Rose says Edmonton accounted for 40

percent of new net jobs in Canada in 2014,
while Alberta as a province created 80 percent
of new net jobs. The latest census released
in November 2014 shows Edmontons
population has grown by more than 60,000
over the past two years, climbing to 877,926.
Many of those coming to Alberta are
taking jobs as oilfield service operators or
drilling rig floorhands. Theyre drawn by
the high salaries and standard of living.
Coming up with an exact salary for
any energy job is difficult. Some jobs offer
compensations for living and travel, some
are seasonal, and it always varies among
companies and cities.
Training, experience and education
play a role, as well. Here are the average
salaries for some of the most common oil
patch jobs, determined by Alberta Learning
Information Service:

REDUCING POLLUTION
As the industry continues to grow, oil
companies are doing their part to try to cut
pollution in the oilsands.
Canadian Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA), an industry group representing 13 large oilsands companies, says
it plans to cut the amount of freshwater
in oil production in half to 0.2 barrels of
water per barrel of crude by 2022. At the
same time COSIA also wants to increase
its oil production output from about 2 million barrels per day to 3.2 million barrels
per day.
Through
COSIA,
participating
companies develop and share technology
and techniques to improve environmental
performance in the oilsands, focusing
on four environmental priority areas
tailings, water, land and greenhouse gasses.
Suncor Energy Inc. Chief Executive
Steve Williams says his company has
spent nearly $1.8 billion on technologies to
reduce toxic tailings.
To date, COSIA member companies
have shared 777 technologies and
innovations that cost over $950 million to
develop.
These numbers are increasing as
the alliance matures and expands, says
COSIA Chief Executive Dan Wicklum.
Through this sharing of innovation and
application of new technologies, members
can accelerate the pace of environmental

Peristaltic pumps from Flowrox can be used
to pump slurries and dose a range of abrasive,
corrosive, viscous or crystallizing media. As
the cylindrical rotor rotates along the hose, the
process medium gets pushed forward through

compression point reverts to its original circular
shape, creating a suction effect at the pump inlet

PUMP DEPLOYED TO MOVE POTASH MINE BRINE WATER 3 MILES

Problem
When a potash mine in the southwest U.S. was in the middle of expanding operations, a pump capable
of moving water 3 miles to new 5-million-gallon holding ponds was needed. Because the mine uses fully
saturated brine water to float the mined potash, a pump capable of handling highly corrosive liquids was
necessary.
Solution
Rain for Rent deployed the XH150c pump because of its ability to handle corrosive water and pump
long distances at higher flows. The pump is designed to produce extra-high discharge heads and high flows.
It offers flow rates up to 3,250 gpm and 625 feet of head.
Result
The corrosive brine water was no issue for the pumps CD4MCu wet end and stainless steel internals. A
single pump was able to handle the flow and friction loss of the pipeline. The 2,000 gpm peak flow of brine

Fixed-frame, air-suspension axle
systems designed for optimal
strength and low weight

SAF CBX Series fixed-frame, air-suspension axle systems from SAFHolland are designed for heavy-duty low-boy and drop-deck applications,
including on-highway, off-highway and off-road.
The trailing arm suspensions use a fully cast steel beam between the
front axle and the front hanger for optimal strength and weight.
We put the metal where we need it and take it out where we dont,
says Bill Hicks, director of product planning and market development axles
and suspension trailer systems for SAF-Holland. Even if youre empty,
youre pulling something lighter. Thatll help with your fuel economy and
carbon emissions.
Available through major trailer manufacturers, the model CBX23 can
carry up to 23,000 pounds per axle; the CBX25 can carry up to 25,000
pounds; and the CBX25/30 can carry up to 30,000 pounds per axle at
creep speed (5 mph or less). Ride heights for the CBX23 range from 14 to
17 inches, while ride heights for the CBX25 range from 14 to 19 inches.
Theyre available in a multitude of configurations, from axle spacing
to axle types, even with disc brakes, Hicks says. We have our own
proprietary air disc brake, the SAF INTEGRAL, for mountainous regions
or applications where you really need a high-performance disc brake.
The disc brake has a bimetallic rotor for heat dissipation and is
engineered to accept industry standard, single wide-based wheels with up
to 2-inch offsets and dual-wheel configurations.
The standard drum brake has a SAF X-Series 5.75-inch diameter with
16 1/2- by 7-inch extended life linings and industry standard tapered

spindles. Parallel spindles are available.

Other features include a multifunctional pivot bushing that limits
twisting to prolong bushing life and the Swing Align axle alignment
system that requires no replacement parts or disassembly. Axle alignment
is achieved by direct adjustment of the lead screw, requiring less than 250
ft-lbs of torque.
Its built right into the frame hanger, Hicks says of the one-person
alignment system. All you have to do is dial it in. Turning the bolt moves
it forward or back. Theres no need to cut anything off or reweld or replace
components.
All suspension systems feature Black Armour metal protection.
Unlike primer, paint or powder coating, the protectant chemically bonds
with metal to form a protective skin that is impervious to water and antiicing chemicals.
Options include the PosiLift Axle Lift System that enables operators
to increase payload with the flip of a switch. The liftable axles also extend
tire life, improve operational versatility and fuel efficiency, as well as

ATLAS COPCO DRILL RIG REMOTE CONTROL

SmartROC T35 and T40 surface drill rigs from Atlas Copco give operators
the option of running the units from the cabin or by radio remote. Upgrading the

SAFE OUTCOMES
A new approach to accident prevention goes
beyond the traditional principles

nyone involved in safety is familiar

with Heinrichs Law: For every 330
incidents, there will be 300 with
no injuries, 29 minor injuries and one major
injury. While the accuracy of his theory
is questioned, the principle seems sound
enough minor incidents lead to more
serious ones.
Heinrich did his work in the 1930s
using data from the 20s. Thats nearly a
century ago, long before we had the power
to crunch big data to reveal unseen
patterns and trends. In the last 20 years
the number of injuries in the U.S. has
steadily declined, says Griffin Schultz,
general manager of Predictive Solutions
in Pittsburgh. Fatalities and significant
injuries have flatlined.
He adds that companies are finding

the theory that smaller injuries predict
larger ones isnt necessarily true. Theyre
also finding that precursors to significant
injuries and fatalities are different than
precursors to less severe injuries.
Predictive Solutions, a global safety and
predictive analytics company, uses safety
observations rather than actual incidents to
predict the future. Injuries are on the far
right of the spectrum. Thats what happens
at the end; a wrench falls off scaffolding and
hits someone in the head. A near miss is one
step to the left; a wrench falls and doesnt
hit anyone.
That is the typical scope of safety
analysis based on Heinrichs Law and
leads to answers about what, where and
THE FOUR TRUTHS OF SAFETY

Looking at four years of safety data while building its analytical tool, Predictive Solutions
found that those projects with the fewest safety incidents had several things in common. Two
are what safety professionals have known for many years:
Too many unsafe observations predicts an unsafe work site: Commit time and resources to
fixing observations before they cause incidents.
More inspections predict a safer work site: Make sure your program rewards high levels of
inspections.
Predictive Solutions also found two that are more counterintuitive:
More inspectors, specifically more inspectors outside the safety function, predict a safer
work site: Include as many people as you can in your safety inspection program and
ideally, have more nonsafety than safety people doing inspections.
Too many 100 percent safe inspections predict an unsafe work site: Train for and reward
the reporting of unsafe observations.

how incidents happen. Those are lagging

indicators looking backward, he says.
Further to the left are safety
observations, he says. You see a wrench
on scaffolding and theres no toe rail to
prevent it from falling. Thats the data we
use to predict injuries.
Predictive analytics, used for years in
sales and marketing, finance, maintenance
and other business functions, looks ahead
to answer questions such as why things
are happening and whats going to happen
next; moving from lagging indicators to
leading indicators.
The company analyzes data from the
entire base of customers using its SafetyNet
software, including some leading gas
and oil companies. Its 170 million safety
observations are growing by 3 million per
month.
Using computer analytics, the
observations predict workplace injuries at an
accuracy rate of between 80 and 97 percent,
determined by comparing actual incidents
to the number predicted. The company
cites these examples of how analytics have
helped companies:
A Fortune 150 manufacturer
reduced its lost-workday rate by 97
percent within one year.
A Fortune 150 energy company
reduced its incident rate by 67
percent within 18 months.
A top 20 construction company
achieved
significant
safety
improvements including 90 percent
of work sites experiencing no losttime incidents.
A top 10 specialty contractor
reduced its workers compensation
fees by 57 percent and 66 percent in
two years while the number of hours
worked increased.
Its no different than quality, adds
Schultz. Testing a product at the end of
the assembly line is one measurement. You
want to catch the defect in the steps of the
process, not at the end. Its the same thing
in safety. You want to observe every day to
make sure the toe rail is installed so that
wrench never has the opportunity to fall
