Learning Centre for Sustainability. Workshops that are run here benefit hugely from: the inspirational nature of the community in
which they are embedded a model of sustainable human settlement; the caring ethos of the staff who live in and run the centre;
and the artistic and beautiful nature of the built and natural environment. All these features make it an ideal place to welcome some
of societys more marginalised people.
The Findhorn Foundation, is mainly placed in two biggest venues: the Park in the Findhorn village and Cluny Hill in the town of
Forres; it is home to more than 400 people from all over the world, and welcomes thousands of visitors each year. The community
also extends to individuals, businesses and organisations within a 50 mile radius of The Park, and to the islands of Iona and Erraid on
the west coast of Scotland.
The Findhorn Foundation is a model for sustainable living - sustainable values are expressed in the built environment through our
ecological houses and innovative use of building materials, as well as applied technology in the Living Machine sewage treatment
facility and electricity-generating wind turbines. Sustainable values are also expressed in the communitys social, economic and
educational initiatives.
We aim to pioneer, inspire, demonstrate, encourage and share our experience. It is the consciousness, motivation, mindfulness,
creative energy and joy that we bring to all of these activities that make visions a reality and bring lasting, positive change to the
world.
What are the activities and experience of your organisation in the areas relevant for this project? What are the skills and/or expertise
of key persons involved in this project?
The Foundation focuses on holistic adult education personal development; art and creativity; ecology and environmental
education; health and healing and personal well-being. It receives around 3000 people a year into residential workshops and has a
co-worker staff complement of some 90 FTEs. Its annual turnover is in the region of 1.8 million and it has assets with a book value
of over 5 million. It has a proven track record as a Charitable Trust dating back over 30 years. As such it is well placed to hold
responsibility for the administration of this grant.
The Findhorn Foundation is also an NGO associated with the UN; one of 9 official UN Training Centres for sustainability (CIFAL
Findhorn) and has won awards for best practice in human habitats.
Main representative:
Robin Alfred worked as a trainer, educator and social work manager for 15 years in London, prior to coming to the Findhorn
Foundation Community, Scotland in 1995. At the Foundation, Robin was initially responsible for a "reinvention" process before
going on to Chair the Foundations Management Committee. He is founding director of the organisation's Consultancy Service and
also Chair of Trustees.
Robin has extensive experience of leading and developing groups and individuals in a variety of settings including prisons, social
work, police forces, communities and other organisations. Robin is trained in a wide variety of approaches to personal and
organisational development including: Appreciative Inquiry, the Frameworks for Change Coaching Process, Process Work, and Tools
for Corporate Transformation. He is also an associate and lead presenter for Olivier Mythodrama Associates for whom he delivers a
wide range of leadership trainings, based on Shakespeare plays and stories.
Robin has a BA degree in Economics, Philosophy and Politics, and an M.Phil in Criminology. He has been a faculty member of the
Findhorn Foundations Ecovillage Training for the past eight years, and has taught on Ecovillage Design Education courses at
Findhorn, Sieben Linden and Orissa, India. He represented the Findhorn Foundation on the two-year Transition to Resilience
Learning Partnership programme and has co-led the first iteration of the Transition to Resilience Training A Learning Adventure for
Change Makers He has taught both the Social and Economy aspects of EDEs.
Robin co-facilitated the GEN Europe Conferences in 2012 and 2013 and is co-editor of Beyond You and Me Wisdom and Inspiration
for Building Community the Social Key of the EDE.

FFCUL acts as the front institution for a Portuguese scientific collaboration of multiple research groups (research centers for different
fields, such as Biology, chemistry, Geophysics, Information Technology, Physics, Geology, Statistics, Oceanography), with more than
400 ongoing projects. Many of these R&D activities are developed together with international teams and are funded both at national
and European levels. Its main purposes are to promote research and technological development activities, provide qualified human
resources training and offer consulting expertise and knowledge dissemination.
The Faculty of Sciences University of Lisbon (FCUL) has its mission in teaching, innovative research and knowledge transfer in the
areas of exact, natural and techno sciences, as well as in producing, disseminating and sharing knowledge and cultures. It is engaged
in stimulating an ongoing and open dialogue with civil society through multiple interconnections with social and economic actors.
FCUL is internationally recognized as a benchmark institution in the creation of scientific knowledge, promoting excellence in
teaching, research and the enhancement of social and economic knowledge. Among the Facultys current Strategic Objectives are
promoting the social and economic value of knowledge and ensuring the sustainability of the economic sphere. The Faculty hosts
the Laboratory for Systems, Instrumentation and Modeling in Science and Technology for Space and the Environment (SIM), a
research center established in 2003. The SIM laboratory has two research groups, among them one on Climate Change Impacts,
Adaptation and Modelling (CCIAM), mostly funded by the European Union. CCIAM integrates 7 PhDs and 20 masters and graduates
that support the ongoing European and national research projects as well as national and international services in the fields of
Climate Change and Sustainability.
What are the activities and experience of the partner organisation in the areas relevant for this project? What are the skills and/or
expertise of key persons involved in this project?
CCIAM research group bring together scientists from several disciplines who conduct trans-disciplinary research on both local,
national and international level and its objectives fall within 5 main domains: Impacts assessment: to conduct pioneering research
on climate change (CC) impacts on water resources, coastal zones, forests, biodiversity, agriculture, public health, tourism, energy
demand, and transports; Adaptation: to contribute towards national and global research on adaptation to CC; Transition to
Sustainability: to promote actionresearch on the search for effective solutions for the integral crisis Humanity faces today;
Networking: to establish national and international networks; and Dissemination: to disseminate research results.
The CCIAM engages in transformative and action-research towards a more sustainable and resilient planet and society. This group
also leads the Inter-University Doctoral program entitled "Climate Change and Sustainable Development" sustained by the three
major universities of Lisbon.
Besides adult training programs and work towards improving educational infrastructures, a major component of the institutions
strategy for promoting the dissemination of science targeting the needs of society are various international partnerships with
institutions of higher education, but also cooperatives and other grassroots initiatives and networks with civic actors (change
agents). FCUL has close links with the international Transition Network and with Transition Portugal and is involved in various local
to international cooperative projects.
The contact person, Dr. Gil Penha-Lopes, is a Post-Doc and project coordinator in the CCIAM, responsible for the topics of Transition,
Resilience and Empowerment. He is also a Transition Trainer and an Integral Coach.

Altekio contributes with its expertise in a systemic and comprehensive approach to address sustainability within their projects by
means of integrating the ecological, social and economic dimensions in theory and practice. Altekio is an organization with a long
experience in leading processes of social transformation and innovation.
As trainers, consultants and researchers in the field of environmental, social and economic sustainability, its members provide
services like the support in the facilitation of leadership, organizational transformation, community empowerment and social
entrepreneurship.
Based on the belief that the means to reach the objectives are key elements, Altekio uses innovative methodologies such as social
technologies (Open Space, World Cafe, Pro-action cafe...), the Oasis game, future scenario planning, etc.
From the beginning Altekio has co-worked with other social enterprises, sharing offices and resources.
This is a reflection of Altekio's organizational culture of cooperation and collaboration.
In this sense, Altekio is also part of a cooperative group (Tangente Grupo Cooperativo - www.tangente.coop) that brings together 16
social enterprises and 60 workers.
Some projects are developed jointly with some of these organizations.
Altekio is involved in "Madrid Social Market (MSM)", which is a network composed by more than 100 social enterprises and consumer
groups, aiming to become a reference in the transformation of the economy into field that takes into account the human scale, by
considering the social and ecological impacts in addition to the economical one. The MSM has its own local and complementary
social currency system, called the "boniato".
Altekio develops the following activities relevant for this project:
Social and environmental entrepreneurship projects:

o Oasis game: The Oasis Game is a community mobilization tool developed by Instituto Elos in Brazil and disseminated in Spain by
Altekio to materialize collective dreams. The game involves players and communities, bringing together people from many different
areas of society such as NGOs, local government, nearby businesses and the community itself. It was conceived to be applied at no
cost and in a fully cooperative way so that, together, all participants can accomplish a common goal. The design of the Oasis Game
strives to allow all players to be winners, without exception.
o Social entrepeneurship pedagogical toolkit: This pedagogical toolkit has been created (in collaboration with the Spanish partner
Proempleo) within the Leonardo PACTES project. It is a specific educational tool for professionals who work in the field of
entrepreneurship within the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE), both at a training level and for consultancy. Moreover, it will be
useful for entrepreneurs who are promoting business initiatives within the SSE. The toolkit is the result of the exchange, the sharing
of expertise and the innovation of the 4 partner organizations from Germany, Belgium, Spain and France.
o Project Fresnedas con Futuro (Fresnedas with Future): The main objective of the project is the promotion of new social businesses
and the creation of green employment taking into account the potentialities for the endogenous, local and sustainable
development offered by the exploitation of the ash pastures, maintaining and improving its socio-environmental heritage. Research,
training and advice activities for entrepreneurs are developed.
Adult training programs and workshops:

o Sustainable Entrepreneurships and Settlements Design Education: A comprehensive course in the fundamentals of Sustainability
Design. Curriculum conceived and designed by the GEESE (Global Ecovillage Educators for a Sustainable Earth). Offered in 34
countries. The knowledge acquired in the course is applicable to a wide variety of real environments: organizations, companies,
neighbourhoods, local communities, in-transition villages and cities and even in whole regions.
o Groups/Teams Facilitation, Leadership and organizational trasnformation: Courses of 120 hours developed in 7 weekend
seminars focused on the following issues: group facilitation; governance and decision-making; effective meetings; conscious
communication, conflict transformation, strategic planning; facilitation techniques and skills. Consultancy and facilitation for
organizations are also offered.
Altekio
The key persons involved in this project (Concepcin Pieiro, Javier Fernndez y Jorge Navacerrada) are the same who lead the
mentioned activities above. They have developed their training in these fields in the last 15 years. Their experience is based both on

the activities already developed during their professional environment with Altekio and their previous working experiences, mainly
in social and environmental organizations. Their skills are those required for fulfilling the aims of the former projects. The following

program strengthens their leadership capabilities and enhances skills and knowhow to transform individual visions of a sustainable
and peaceful society into concrete projects and organisations like social businesses.
Plenum has 6 permanent employees and a bigger number of project staff. Plenum is strategically combining education, consulting
and research. The Plenum Academy is offering proven training courses like the training course for CSR-Managers called
Quintessenz, Pioneers of Change or short-term workshops (like the international Grundtvig-Workshop Sustainable Innovation
Quest in 2012). Secondly, Plenum is creating its main income by consulting big corporations in their sustainability strategy and
corporate social responsibility. Thirdly, Plenum is cooperating with research institutions like universities to research issues like
sustainable lifestyles, sustainable economics or even ecovillages (like for example funded by the Austian Climate Fund).

DI Dr. Alfred W. Strigl
Alfred Strigl is CEO of p l e n u m. He is council member in the Austrian Institute for Sustainable Development, member of ESD
(European Sustainable Development) and was in the Austrian Delegation in the World Summit on Sustainable Development in
Johannesburg. Dr. Strigl teaches on the Vienna Universitt fr Life Sciences and the Asia Pacific University in Beppu, Japan. He leads
and designs the Management Training for Corporate Social Responsibility since 2003 (now called Quintessenz) and is a key
enabler, trainer and mentor for the Pioneers of Change Program.
Mag. Sylvia Brenzel:
Sylvia Brenzel studied Environmental Economics and worked from 2003-2007 in the Austrian Business Academy for Sustainable
Development. She developed the first training program for managers in Corporate Social Responsibility, before she cofounded
plenum in 2008. Sylvia focusses on education for sustainable development. She has extensive expertise in Curriculum Design,
Teaching in international Institutions, Coaching and Social Entrepreneurship.
DI (FH) Martin Kirchner:
Martin Kirchner developed and leads the Pioneers of Change program. He was trainer and consultant for several NGOs focussing
on education for sustainable development. His work builds on his extensive experience in systemic coaching, nonviolent
communication, social entrepreneurship, permaculture and project management. Martin was Initiator and Project Coordinator of a
model settlement for a more sustainable lifestyle (Cohousing Pomali), was council member of the Global Ecovillage Network and
cofounder of the austrian communities network Austrotopia.

best practice and innovative solutions, and the honouring of deep-rooted traditional knowledge and local cultures, GEN is creating a
pool of wisdom for sustainable living on a global scale.
The Global Ecovillage Network envisions a world of empowered citizens and communities, designing and implementing their own
pathways to a sustainable future, and building bridges of hope and international solidarity. GEN works closely with 6 regional offices
on all continents, one of which is the GEN-Europe organisation and office, based in Germany.
GEN has consultative status with UN-ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council) and is a partner of the UNITAR-CIFAL initiative which
provides training in sustainable development to local government officials around the world.

4. To advance active citizenship and community development by coordinating the activities ofregional ecovillage networks and
reaching out to wider society and policy makers in order to accelerate the transition to sustainable living.

GEN-International brings a strong expertise in developing and delivering Educational Curricula for Capacity Building for the

An EU-funded Learning Partnership brought together the expertise of eight key European educational movements in the field of
sustainability, amongst them the Global Ecovillage Network in the years 2010-2011.
Building on the best of the Ecovillage Design Education, the Transition Town Training, the Permaculture Design Certificate Course,
Spiral Dynamics Trainings, and the Art of Hosting body of experience, the Transition to Resilience Training has been designed to
support active citizens and their local governments in setting up projects for sustainability (building community in cities and towns,

setting up Transition Town or similar initiatives, achieving CO2-reduction, enhancing bioregions, establishing village networks etc.
GEN-International, Scotland brings experience and knowledge of grassroots sustainability initiatives from over 10,000 ecovillages
around the world.It also brings the results from the EU Learning Partnership Transition to Resilience and the learning materials
produced.
GEN-International is also part of the ECOLISE Network and works closely with AEIDL to strengthen community-led response to
Climate Change within the EU.
Main representative:
Kosha Anja Joubert (MSc Organisational Development) is an international facilitator, trainer, manager and consultant. She has
worked extensively in the fields of curriculum development, international collaboration and sustainable development.
Kosha currently serves as President of the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN-International). GEN was set up in 1995 to support
organisations and societies to transition into resilience, learning to sustain and regenerate their social and natural environments.
GEN builds bridges between policy-makers, academics, entrepreneurs and sustainable community networks across the globe. GEN
has consultative status in the UN - ECOSOC. (www.ecovillages.org).
Kosha simultaneously holds the position of Managing Director of GEN-Europe, the European branch of GEN-International (www.geneurope.org). In this role she has been the driving force behind the emergence of GEN-Africa as an independent region within GEN,
and is currently working with organisations in the Middle East on the emergence of GEN-Middle East. Through this, Kosha has gained
extensive experience in working with participants from these regions in Leadership and Sustainable Venture Trainings, financed and
funded through the German Foreign Ministry and the Anne Lindh Foundation.
Kosha is a co-founder of Gaia Education, which develops trainings at the cutting-edge of sustainability, and sits on the Certification
Board of Gaia Education (www.gaiaeducation.net). She is co-author of the internationally applied Gaia Education curriculum, The
Ecovillage Design Education, the development of which was endorsed by UNITAR and recognised as an official contribution to the
UN Decade for the Education for Sustainable Development 2004-2014. The Ecovillage Design Education has been run in 35
countries since 2006. Kosha has been lead faculty on 14 of these courses.

Wind Harvest is a start up private company, based and founded on Holistic principals, with its main focus on the development and
design, as well as the selling and spreading of renewable energy, more concretely of 70kW vertical axis wind turbines, into local
communities, crises and disaster areas as well as already existing wind parks.
Through the assistance and facilitation of communities in the process of stepping into Ownership of their Energy production and
becoming independent from the energy market, Still Consulting SPRL / Wind Harvest aims for initiating the process of transitioning
towards a respectful, honest and authentic living, in which the 4 aspects of a sustainable Lifestyle the Social, Economical, Ecological
and Awareness are addressed, stimulated and worked on together.
The process of owning the Energy production can be seen and functions as an important catalyser, in the process towards the
building of sustainable Communities and the Empowerment of new and holistic ways of working and living together with and in a
inclusive and divers way and setting.
It is the support of responsible, active and resilient citizenship.
Still Consulting SPRL / Wind Harvest is with its offices based at Euclides, a centre for social economic activity and support, in
Anderlecht, Brussels Belgium
It is employing 12 people in the design, selling and maintenance of this 18m high Wind turbines and people in the team-and
business development, focusing on the inclusive working, meaning collecting multiple perspectives and emerging the collective
intelligence.
Currently certifying the production prototype in Denmark, it is looking to develop the business globally using the licensee model,
where a percentage of profit is allocated to local community investment as part of the contract.

AEIDL is a multicultural and multilingual organisation. Its permanent staff are qualified and experienced in the management of
information, research and documentation, information technology, journalism, publishing and event management. The team also
comprises experts in rural development, regional policy, the environment and European citizenship. AEIDLs core team is
complemented by an extensive network of external partners and experts in every country of the European Union. AEIDL is a social
enterprise (Belgian asbl statute) which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary of doing radical consultancy and development across
very different territories (fisheries/coastal, urban, rural, mountains, islands and ultra peripheral) and on a range of policy themes
(environment, employment, inclusion, regeneration, etc). Its Brussels offices are located close to Schuman (metro Merode one stop
from Schuman, four stops from Beaulieu), and include a couple of meeting rooms, hot desking facilities and video conferencing
equipment. It is experienced at organising and delivering a wide range of consultancy activities including events, communication,
training (eg green entrepreneurship for Tunisian entrepreneurs), research and consultancy. It has two decades of experience
working with the cohesion policy DGs (Employment and Regio) and currently runs the communication activities of the LIFE
programme for DG Environment, as well as running local development evaluation and research. We currently have a joint venture
to run the fisheries community platform FARNET for DG MARE across 21 Member States, and perhaps in the future will be involved
in running the much larger rural development network across all 28. We ran over a period of four years the DG Employment ESF
learning networks. AEIDL also recently delivered the EU 50 Urban cases for DG Regio to much critical acclaim.
AEIDL has a diverse team based in Brussels, and close associates in all the Member States. In addition, it can rely on a wide network
of experts covering its main fields of activity (environment, climate change, agriculture, rural development, food-chain, fisheries,
communication, social media, dissemination, etc.) Jean is the Managing Director based in Brussels, Eamon is project manager, based
in France. With AEIDLs support, he initiated the idea which gave birth to the ECOLISE network. The members of ECOLISE include
international, national and sometimes regional networks of community-based initiatives, as well as other bodies engaged in
European-level research, training, communications or other activities to support communitybased action on climate change and sustainability. By bringing these organisations together, ECOLISE seeks to establish a common
Europe-wide agenda and a platform for collective action.
AEIDL has developed considerable expertise in running support services for the networking of specific groups of people. The main
networks facilitated by AEIDL and its partners, on behalf of the Commission include the following:
DG Agriculture: European Evaluation Network for Rural Development (Evaluation Expert Network - 2009 - ongoing)
DG Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: FARNET, the European Fisheries Areas Network (Axis 4 of the EFF 2009 - ongoing)
DG Employment and Social Affairs: ESF-TCI - Transnational and innovative actions networks under the European Social Fund (ESF
2009-2013)
DG Employment and Social Affairs: EQUAL- European networks promoting the exchange of experiences and the diffusion of
innovative practices in the area of entrepreneurship (Community Initiative for Emplyment 2001-2008)
AEIDL has always worked in close cooperation with external experts. This is a necessity to provide our client with the best
combination of expertise and communication capacities.
The Helpdesk of the European Evaluation Network for Rural Development co-managed by AEIDL is based on a pool of experts
aiming to promote and facilitate the use of evaluation in the development and implementation of rural development policies.
The FARNET Support Unit co-managed by AEIDL gathers thematic and geographic experts from all over Europe to provide
technical support in establishing and coordinating a network of Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs) and other stakeholders
involved in the delivery of Axis 4 of the European Fisheries Fund (EFF).
Within the ESF-TCI contract, AEIDL coordinated th pool of experts who monitored 10 transnational cooperation networks.
The LIFE programme has a large team of thematic experts in charge of the monitoring of LIFE projects. They have contributed to the
drafting of the thematic dossiers produced by the LIFE Communication Team managed by AEIDL.
An important part of AEIDL's expertise concerns the dissemination of good practice, including the collection of information on
methods and instruments, and the presentation of information to make it available to diverse target groups. AEIDL has experience in

The activities which fall into the ECOLISE networks basket are also very relevant to this project. Indeed, to support its member
organisations in achieving this vision, the mission of ECOLISE is to be a shared platform for learning, action and advocacy of
community led initiatives on climate change and sustainability in Europe. Through its activities, ECOLISE seeks to raise the profile of
community-based action on climate change and sustainability in Europe, to facilitate exchange, cooperation and knowledge
development and sharing among stakeholders across Europe, and to strengthen the collective influence of its members in EU,
national and local policy making. ECOLISE draws on experiences from other parts of the world and, where possible, seeks to be a
source of inspiration and support for similar initiatives outside of Europe.
Eamon OHara has over fifteen years experience in managing EU projects and initiatives, including ten years of coordinating
communication activities at EU level. Much of Eamons work on communication has concerned EU environment and territorial
development policy.
Toby Johnson has worked in the field of social enterprise for 37 years, the last 20 years of which have been based in Brussels. He
helped found two workers co-operatives, one of which (Suma Wholefoods) has grown from its initial team of 7 to employ 150
people today. He became Secretary of the UK work co-operative federation, where he was responsible for representation and also
organised a number of development and training projects. In 1994 he was seconded to the European Commissions Social Economy
Unit, where he helped implement the Work Programme for Co-operatives, Mutual Societies, Associations and Foundations. Since
then has worked in two main fields: as the European Commissions expert on social economy in the EQUAL programme (2002-08);
and since 2009 he has played a similar role as part of the technical assistance team supporting the transnational ESF Learning
Networks. He currently supports the Social Entrepreneurship Network (SEN).
Eveline Durieux has been responsible for the Documentation Unit at AEIDL since 1992, with primary responsibility for the
organisation, development and maintenance of specialist documentation systems.
As information analyst, she contributes to the preparation of good practices, interviews and case studies.
Within the LEADER II Observatory, she was a member of the experts groups "Environment" and contributed to the creation of the
pedagogical tool on the LEADER Approach.

Romania n Tranzitie
Romania n Tranzitie (from now on RiT) activities relevant for this project are: training, networking and communication.
RiT is working actively to establish a macro-regional network in the Danube Region that is connecting initiatives across the Danube
related with sustainable development. This will serve as a platform for exchanging know-how, support and training within the
macro-region.
RiT shares the know-how of the network that represents and also takes deep advantage of the connection with the global
movement of Transition Towns.
RiT has experience in organizing training and managing projects with relevant impact on emergence of sustainable and resilient
communities.
One of the main projects driven by RiT is called Seeds for Happiness and aims the establishment of a cross-national network of
trainers that could give support to local communities and to transmit and create programs adjusted to the national reality.
Adina Maria Moise is a psychologist, studied change psychology and resistance to change, and works as a personal development
counselor. Qualified in Project management and Social Entrepreneurship, she has experience working in 2 rural development
projects funded with LEADER programme, about forming (training) and informing in rural areas, including professional training and
raising awareness about permaculture and traditional and ecological agriculture.
Member of RiT and manager of the fundraising and projects funding department, she is also the coordinator of Alba in Tranzitie, a
local transition initiative. She also initiated and leading Free Seeds romanian movement.
Claudian Dobos
Claudian Dobos has aprevious experience as entrepreneur within the portuguese company we are one where he worked as a
manager and branding and communication and image strategy expert.
Is co-founder of the entrepreneurs community Joo Sem Medo, established as a cooperative under the Portuguese Low.
Since 2010 is supporting actively the emergence of the romanian Transition Towns Movement. Is co-founder of Romania In
Tranzitie. Also representing Romania In Tranzitie in the Transition Towns Network meetings.

citizenship with those for social and holistic entrepreneurship. It will address the needs of adult learners, in particular those living in
more disadvantaged areas, who wish to marry their care for the environment with the ability to establish a source of right livelihood.
Partners will each host two day-long dissemination events; and run two Pilot trainings of 5 days each for 14-16 participants. Core
materials will be translated from English into six other European languages, thus promoting the take-up of practical entrepreneurial
experiences in education, training and youth work and supporting the production and adoption of Open Educational Resources in
diverse European languages.
Innovation lies in the development of a pattern language approach where the broad framework of the learning journey and
outcomes is outlined, and the detailed content is left to the local trainers to decide on. This approach is inspired by the structured
design process of architect Christopher Alexander. The Core Story (or syntax) is the development and empowerment of change
makers and support of their social innovation projects. Learning Patterns (the vocabulary) that support this journey are then
dropped in as needed.
The Projects Objectives are to:
1. Create a body of Learning Patterns that foster action towards sustainable and resilient development on communal, national,
transnational and trans-sector levels
2. Modify and adapt the Transition to Resilience, Pioneers of Change, PACTE and other relevant curricula into the new SIRCle
curriculum
3. Train a body of 16-18 adult trainers, drawn from Austria, Belgium, Portugal, Romania, Spain and the UK to deliver the SIRCle
curriculum in their respective countries
4. Translate learning materials into the relevant languages, and disseminate these materials through running two Pilot Courses in
each country
5. Empower Change Makers in the 6 countries to establish projects geared towards building resilience and establishing sources of
right livelihood.
The project uses adult education to address one of the most pressing needs of our time, namely how to marry effective grassroots
responses to climate and social change with the capacity to make a sustainable living in a challenging economic climate. Learners
will acquire the skills needed to set up and run a social enterprise that contributes to the sustainability of their region. In this way
they will be supporting the development of a new economy based on the goods and services needed to deliver a sustainable and
resilient future.
Needs assessment:
The Flagship Report 2011 of the German Advisory Council on Global Change World in Transition - A Social Contract for
Sustainability prominently acknowledges the role individuals can play as pioneers of change who gain trust and reputation at the
micro-level as leaders and role models, and who then work together at meso-level in manageable groups.
Through the empowerment of social innovators who start organisations and eco-social ventures on a local level, we aim to create
sustainable effects for disadvantaged people in the population.
By disadvantaged, we mean groups of people who are more vulnerable than others, marginalized and thus unable to play a full and
active role in society. This may be because they are unemployed, suffer from drug abuse, have poor access to health care, housing,
and education, are in debt, ex-offenders, members of ethnic minorities or migrants. They may be people who suffer from racism and
other forms of discrimination, such as those linked to age or gender.
Recent statistical data from Eurostat show that the unemployment rates amongst young people are particularly high, and this is true
across all Member States. In 2013, unemployment rates for 15-24 year olds were, for example, 23.9% in France, 23.6% in Romania,
37.7% in Portugal and 55.7% in Spain. [Ref: Eurostat yth_empl_090]
The issue of early school leavers is also a pressing one, leaving many young adults in a precarious social and employment situation.

In 2013 in Portugal, for example, 19.2% of young people were early leavers, while in Romania and Spain the figures were 17.3% and
23.5% respectively. (Ref: Early leavers from education and training by sex and labour status [edat_lfse_14] Last update: 10.04.14)
The target groups for this partnership are:
1. Trainers drawn from the Partner Organizations, who will become certified SIRCle Trainers and go on to run pilot SIRCle Courses in
their countries.
2. Disadvantaged adults and youth. We aim for of each training to be made up of this group
3. Social entrepreneurs who are interested in developing social enterprises that will benefit the core target group (2 above). We aim
for of each training to be made up of this group.
In what way is the project innovative and/or complementary to other projects already carried out?
The SIRCle project will be grounded in innovative and holistic methodology by bringing materials and tools from soft or peoplebased educational processes, into the hard or more business-based work of developing social enterprises. We will work with
developing imagination, creativity, innovation, awareness of self and others, presence, and intuition while balancing such rightbrain activity with the more traditional left-brain processes of planning, organising and structuring.
This approach will be combined with a Pattern-Language curriculum and a focus on Experiential Learning Pedagogy to create a
compelling, powerful and unique learning journey for change makers.
The project will use innovative and student centered pedagogical approaches, derived from work already completed in former EU
Learning Partnerships. These will include Partnership Education, Transformative, Experiential and Action Learning. These pedagogies
make the educational process directly relevant to participants lives, focussing on the solutions to real problems that people
experience as they set up projects. They educate the whole person: head, heart, hands and senses. The use of what are called
"multiple intelligences" as developed by Howard Gardner, has become a popular way of conveying a pedagogy that includes more
creative ways of learning, integrating hands-on experience, theory and research, time for reflection, pitching to experts, interactive
group processes and more. Different people learn in different ways and the SIRCle Trainings will be offered with this awareness.
This approach will open up a new spectrum of follow-up opportunities to adapt and to transfer educational tools from the social to
the economical dimension and vice-versa, thus building a resilient knowledge community. We will dive deeper into the field of
holistic business, focussing on the process of creating holistic value, instead of maximising shareholder return
The SIRcle Project builds on two Grundtvig Learning Partnerships:
1. In 2010-2012, the Findhorn Foundation and GEN-International were involved in a Grundtvig LP, during which the curriculum for
the Transition to Resilience Training - A Learning Adventure for Change Makers was developed. Since then GEN-International and
the FF have run the first pilot of this 2-year long training between 2012-14. The course has been a great success. The current
Strategic Partnership will provide the opportunity to transform the curriculum to address the need of change makers to marry their
care for the planet with entrepreneurship - an area which has been significantly neglected in sustainability trainings in Europe up to
now.
2. This Strategic Partnership will also draw on the outcomes and learnings of another, very successful Grundtvig LP, called Hosting
transformation: Best practices on facilitating sustainable innovation and active citizenship. From 2011 to 2013 Plenum/Pioneers of
Change has been part of a group of seven European Adult Education Institutions which exchanged their methodological
approaches and learnings regarding learning journeys for social innovators. The most important outcome of the partnership is an
umbrella organization called the International Partnership for Transformative Learning (IPTL). The IPTL organizes an annual
weeklong conference called the ChangeMaker Festival.
Another outcome from this two-year partnership was the publication of a book called "Hosting Transformation: Stories from the
Edge of Changemaking." This 95-page full-color book, printed using ecologically responsible methods, shares the personal trials and
triumphs of individuals in the partnership, as well as methods and practices from the organizations and further insights from the two
years of working together. 1000 copies of the book were printed and distributed and it is also available for free electronically at
www.hostingtransformation.eu/book. The SIRCle Project will bring this foundational work to a new level by applying the learnings
and best practices to a new joint curriculum.
The SIRCle project is also complementary to the LEONARDO project, PACTES (www.im-pactes.eu), that is being carried out this year,

and which strengthens and professionalizes European organizations in the social economy field . One outcome of the PACTES is the
development (in collaboration with the Spanish partner Proempleo/ALTEKIO) of the Social Entrepreneurship Pedagogical Toolkit an educational tool for professionals and entrepreneurs who work in the field of entrepreneurship within the Social and Solidarity
Economy (SSE), both at a training level and for consultancy. The toolkit is the result of the sharing of expertise and the innovation of
4 partner organizations from Germany, Belgium, Spain and France and will be made available to this Partnership to adapt and
modify.
How did you choose the project partners and what experiences and competences will they bring to the project? How was the
partnership established and does it involve organisations that have never been previously involved in a similar project?
The Project Partners were chosen according to a number of criteria. We sought to achieve a geographical spread across the EU, from
southern countries (Spain and Portugal) to the north (Scotland, Germany, Belgium) and also including the east (Romania). We also
sought to create a balanced portfolio of experience, including a formal educational and research institution, (University of Lisbon),
those with experience of social enterprise (Still Consulting; Altekio and Plenum), and those with a proven track record of delivering
high quality and impactful trainings to disadvantaged adults (Findhorn Foundation; Plenum; GEN-International; AEIDL; Romania in
Transition.) Lastly we sought to ensure the Project has very good and embedded networking capacity so as to scale up and
disseminate the learnings across the EU and, potentially, wider.
The majority of the partners have had access to EU funds before and use different sources of structured funding to develop and
provide their educational activities. The majority also have more than 5 years expertise in the field of delivering adult education for
sustainable development; and have direct connections with existing active citizenship networks in their countries of reference. Still
Consulting, Belgium and Romania in Transition have not been involved in such a project before.
The Co-Ordinating Partner, the Findhorn Foundation, is a well established 52 year old education and learning centre with a proven
track record of delivering major projects and with the organisational and financial capacity to support the projects implementation.
- The Findhorn Foundation, Scotland brings substantial experience of running adult education programmes for an international
clientele, and of bringing about change at an international policy level through its work as a UN NGO. It is also the seat of one of
only 9 UN CIFAL training centres world wide focussed on sustainability.
- GEN-International, Scotland brings experience and knowledge of grassroots sustainability initiatives from over 10,000 ecovillages
around the world. It brings the results from the EU Learning Partnership Transition to Resilience and the learning materials
produced. GEN has consultative status with UN-ECOSOC.
- AEIDL, Belgium brings experience in networking and communication at European level. It has considerable experience in
organising and running training programmes, workshops and other events targeting actors involved in local community-based
initiatives across Europe. It has an extensive network of contacts with local development actors and initiatives in all EU countries. It is
closely connected to ECOLISE, the European network for local community-led initiatives on climate change and sustainability.
- Plenum, Austria runs international trainings and consults leading business corporations in their sustainability strategy. It will bring
the learnings of their Pioneers of Change training programme, a year long training program that supports young innovators to
build up social enterprise and that has reached more than 30.000 people in the last 4 years. Plenum will also bring the results of the
EU Learning Partnership Hosting Transformation.
- Altekio, Spain will bring experience of social entrepreneurship, and social empowerment through active citizenship. It has led the
implementation of this methodology in Spain and will bring: the OASIS game, an experiential community-based learning process
focussed on sustainability; experience of Future Scenario Planning and an understanding of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment
UN report in which Altekio coordinated the future scenarios and is responsible for the communication strategy in Spain.
- Romnia n Tranzitie (Romania in Transition) brings diversity and connection to Eastern Europe. They have experience in
establishing networks and local initiatives within the culture of the Transition Town Network. They have experience in hosting
trainings and are already working actively to create a network of local trainers for this Strategic Partnership.
-Still Consulting, Belgium, brings knowledge and expertise of the learning and navigation process of their holistic business approach.
This aims to create and optimize value for the whole community. They bring knowledge of how social entrepreneurship involves the
whole community in the journey to create resilient environments.
- Faculty of Sciences Foundation, University of Lisbon brings scientific and educational knowledge and wisdom based on actionresearch/service projects and post-graduate courses hosted at the Faculty of Sciences. FFCUL has experience of bottom-up
participatory processes and bridge-building between local actors and regional and national decision-makers, as well as
internationally recognized competence on climate change mitigation and adaptation. Its members include institutions such as the
IPCC and the Portuguese Government Advisory Board on Environment and Sustainable Development.
How will cooperation and communication happen among all project partners and with other relevant stakeholders? What will be the
purpose and frequency of the transnational project meetings and who will participate in them?
Cooperation and communication between all the project partners will happen as follows, using appropriate ICT tools:

- establishing a project coordination mailing list for all the partners and their representatives
- monthly coordination/evaluation webinar conferences, using Webex.
- establishing a Cloud space or/and Google Drive folder to share and work on documents connected with project implementation
- regular transnational project meetings: two meetings during the first year, and one each in the second and third year of this
partnership
- three training events for trainers of the various Partner Organisations, one during the first and two during the second year
- during the second and third year, SIRCle pilot trainings will be conducted in the various countries involved in this partnership.
These trainings will be enriched by inviting other trainers from the Partner Organisations to contribute in person or via webinars and
teaching videos, thus both deepening the experience for participants and ensuring an even more transnational context.
The Webex conferences and Google Drive/ Cloud space have already been tried, tested and proved invaluable in the building of the
partnership so far and the writing of this application.
Ongoing communication will take place with the following stakeholders:
- learners interested in attending the training courses, who will be chosen from amongst disadvantaged members of communities in
impoverished rural and urban areas;
- adult education institutions interested in applying the SIRCle Educational Curriculum;
- social businesses interested in working with, implementing and developing the SIRCle Trainings in the EU and in partner countries
other than the ones included in the partnership;
- actors involved in sustainable community building or transition projects;
- government agencies and local authorities interested in promoting sustainable development and social innovation in their
respective constituencies
The following processes and tools will be used to enable the communication with these stakeholders:

Since most of the participating institutions have been in contact for some time through personal acquaintance and/or cooperation
in the context of other projects, they have already developed good communication routines. The project will enable them to engage
in more intensive exchange about the topics proposed here, overcoming previous practical restraints. In order to achieve effective
cooperation and communication, working meetings will be organized whenever necessary for facilitating direct and personal
exchange among all partners. The coordinating organization monitors the cooperation and its progress. During the first meeting the
working program will be spelled out in more detail. During every meeting, half a day will be spend for management and budget
issues.

E. Preparation
Please describe what will be done in preparation by your organisation and by your partners before the project activities take place.
A meeting will be held in each of the partner organisations to inform staff and interested members of the public that this project is
taking place. Each of the partner organisations will ensure that all organisational structures are in place: the best team for the project
will be finalised and internal project management will be set up.
The coordination partner will prepare an illustrative document about the project implementation plan.
The document will contain:
- a detailed schedule of the online project implementation meetings with proposed dates and hosting partners;
- a draft agenda for the first meeting;
- a project implementation timetable with specific description of the activities to be accomplished by each partner;
- proposals for appointing a Project Local Coordination Team to take responsibility for the dissemination of the SIRCle Project;
- explanations about contracting and the modalities for transferring funds;
- explanations about book-keeping modalities for partners;
- technical explanation concerning Commission grant agreement signing
Each Partner will design an application process with an application form (based on the Application process of Pioneers of Change);
choose a suitable venue for the trainings; organize the set-up according to a pre-requirements list; attract potential participants
through spreading the invitation in the networks of the partners, newsletters, websites, public events, Facebook, Twitter, press
contacts; select a diverse group of participants and send them information up-front.
E.1. Project Management

How will you ensure proper budget control and time management in your project?
Project management will include financial and administrative issues, scientific coordination, on-going reporting activities. Overall
administrative management of the project will be performed by the Findhorn Foundation in collaboration with GEN-International.
The Findhorn Foundation will ensure that suitably qualified and experienced staff are administering the funding.
The Coordination Partner (Findhorn Foundation) will liaise with an advisory board composed of key people involved in the project,
who will be staff of the partner organizations. They will meet during the transnational meetings to ensure that the project process
formally engages key users who understand the needs and challenges involved in Transition. This advisory board will constitute the
Executive Board. The Executive Board is responsible for the overall management of the project and making key decisions about its
direction.
Partners will be asked to create Project Local Coordination Teams to guarantee the quality of the educational activities delivered at
local level and to ensure the accomplishment of the Intellectual Outputs and their production and dissemination.
Periodic financial and narrative reports concerning project activity will be delivered to the Executive Board, by Project Local
Coordination Teams.

The Coordination Partner will prepare, in collaboration with the Executive Board, yearly management reports, and a final report
summarising the projects key achievements on its completion.
In the first planning meeting all partners will agree upon common rights and obligations which are defined in a partnership contract.
The document will consist of: a common duty and time schedule including deadlines for the activities, regulations of outpayments
of funds according to the Erasmus-regulations and the precise budget plan. Main contact persons, the Executive Board and the staff
of the Project Local Coordination Teams will be nominated and formally appointed at this meeting.
How will the quality of the project's activities and results be monitored and evaluated? Please mention the involved staff profiles and
frequency of such quality checks.
The projects activities will be continuously monitored to evaluate the achievement of the common and individual aims with
adjustment taking place as necessary.
Accordingly, at the beginning of the project a common system of objectives will be developed including different Key Performance

Indicators e.g. for the quantitative achievement of objectives and the quality of the transnational exchange of experience.
Appropriate assessment and certification methods, based on clear learning outcomes, will be developed, both for the Training of
Trainer Courses and for the Pilot Trainings. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation will take place through questionnaires handed to
participants/project partners after trainings and meetings.
Learning materials will be online open resources, and will include teaching videos and the inclusion of online teaching (webinars) as
an integral part of each of the trainings.
In the first online meeting the partners will define the criteria for success and evaluation.
A standardised questionnaire will be designed, which will be filled out periodically by the Executive Board and by Project Local
Coordination Teams .
For every activity, participants are requested to keep a diary to describe the effect of their workshop experiences in terms of the
physical emotional and mental development and impact, and to monitor their personal insights and intuitions as well as experiences
of collective intelligence and learning. After every meeting a report will be composed, containing the texts of presentations, and
descriptions of the program activities.
At the end, the project will be evaluated according to
1. outcomes concerning the main goals of the SIRCle Project
2. cooperation between the partners,
3. the building of a knowledge community with all the participants taking part in the trainings,
4. feedback about the disseminiation events in each countries and about the closure event
5. possibilities for further cooperation of the participating partners and their networks and the ongoing viablity of the work.
What measures are foreseen to handle project risks (e.g. conflict resolution processes, etc.)?
Possible risks compromising the Actions success are:
- Lack of interest among the targeted groups
- Lack of participation among the targeted stakeholders
- Failure to meet the complex coordination and governance challenges raised by mobilising a strong, dynamic consortium involving
partners from different countries and sectors of society
- Sudden disengagement by project members due to financial constraints.
For the assurance of the course of the project a common agreement on regulations of the cooperation, decision making processes
and communication is arranged in consent, as well as how to deal with conflicts.
The objective`s system, as a constant monitoring instrument is used as an early warning of project risks.
All the partners has embed in their organizational culture the use of conflict-resolution instruments and methods, as well as the
deep-collaboration and participative decision making processes.
The partners agree that if an emerging issue/conflict is presenting itself, internal and/or external mediator can be called in for
support, independent of the common solution strategies.
These are vital elements, which will be also taken up in the learning/teaching materials and the trainings themselves.
The questions, possible methods and experiences of the different partners, how to structure social and holistic business with the
topics of inclusive decision making processes, dynamic governance structures and conflict resolutions methods.
The consortium will support its members efforts to mobilise national and European funding for new projects and will raise
awareness about alternative ways of becoming economically sustainable through social innvoation. The partner organisations will
benefit from this internally as well.
Which activities and indicators of achievement (quantitative and qualitative) will you put in place in order to assess whether and to
what extent, the project reaches its objectives and results?
The production of start-up, mid-term and long-term timetables with relevant deadlines, will guarantee accurate project timekeeping
and the balanced division of work on different tasks and from different Local Project Coordination Groups.

F. Implementation
Please describe the activities that your project will organise. Please provide detailed information in particular about the project
activities that will be supported from the grant for Project Management and Implementation.
During the first phase of the project, a collection of existing Learning Materials will be created and linked to a new website and the
existing GEN Solution Library.
Monthly meetings will take place in various constellations amongst partners, as required by work activities in order to coordinate
and manage the work of the partnership. In the Implementation phase, the partnership will create and launch the SIRCle Curriculum.
The Curriculum will be developed based on Core Stories and Learning Patterns which can be applied to 5 day or 7 day trainings and
multi-modular approaches. The description of the learning outcomes for each of the above will be elaborated and uploaded to the
project website. The Learning Patterns will be made available to be downloaded from the website by the wider community.
SIRCle brochures, giving a consise introduction to the approach and to the training, will be created, printed and disseminated by the
partners.
Core pieces of the SIRCle curriculum will be translated to 6 European languages besides English, namly: Dutch, French, German,
Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish.
As a step forward to the dissemination SICRle Training, trainers will be trained and certified during two different Trainings, building
on each other. In the same time, at least 16 Learning Videos will be uploaded and made available on the projects website via
Youtube and Vimeo as part of the e-learning tools and technical support in a deep connection with the existing e-learning platforms
of the partners (when present).
Before the pilot trainings, 6 multiplying events will be organized: each partner organization will organise 1 event with at least 20
participants (the actual numbers are likely to be double or more) and will document this with signatures list.
Between February 2016 and June 2017 12 Learning/Teaching activities will be performed in the different countries. Each of this
activity will have at least 15 participants. The educational activities will be open and accessible to the less advantaged and those
having Special Needs (people with physical or mental disabilities, school drop-outs, and adult learners aged 50+) In Romania and
Spain, the inclusion of Roma population is one of the concerns present in the partners representing this countries.
After the pilot trainings, 6 multiplying events will be organized: each partner organization will organise 1 event with at least 20
participants (the actual numbers are likely to be 30 or more) and will document this with signatures list.
Along the activities listed, and always when possible (organizing events, training sessions, selecting the participants, etc) the
partnerships between public and private organizations will be actively supported.
A closing event will be organised in Brussels, as a transnational meeting, in conjunction with a larger conference or symposium, such
as Green Week (http://www.greenweek2014.eu/) or European SME week (http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/initiatives/sme-week/
index_en.htm). Leading up to this event, the evaluation forms from the various reports will be evaluated and researched in order to
identify highlights, best practice and areas of improvement in the SIRCle Curriculum. Results will be shared and a report published.
Along all the three phases of the present project proposal (Preparation, Implementation, Closure), the Project Management will be
actively monitoring and supporting the progress of the project. The Executive Board will meet regularly. So will the Project Local
Coordination Teams to guarantee the quality of the educational activities delivered at local level and to ensure the accomplishment
of the Intellectual Outputs and their production and dissemination.
Periodic financial and narrative reports concerning project activity will be delivered to the Executive Board, by Project Local
Coordination Teams.

The Coordination Partner will prepare, in collaboration with the Executive Board, yearly management reports, and a final report
summarising the projects key achievements on its completion.

SIRCle PILOT TRAININGS:

1. Disadvantaged young adults, unemployed persons, representatives from marginalised groups and peoples with low levels of
education who will be the final beneficiaries of the T2R Pilot Courses. A special focus will be put on young unemployed people,
inculding graduates. Unemployment among young people, including young graduates, is an acute problem in many European
countries (in Spain, the youth unemployment rate on February 2014 is 55%). They will gain new basic skills, including leadership
presence, entrepreneurial skills, ICT skills and permaculture (a branch of ecological design, ecological engineering, and
environmental design that develops sustainable architecture and self-maintained agricultural systems modeled from natural
ecosystems) that enhance the traditional basic skills that they already bring from the formal education system.
2. Social entrepreneurs who are interested in developing social enterprises that will benefit the core target group (2 above). People
in a disadvantaged situation will sometimes be able to launch such initiatives but they will also be able to benefit from initiatives
launched by others.
The SIRCle Partnership will particularly address the needs of adult learners in disadvantaged parts of the EU countries represented. It
will focus on the needs of the unemployed, and those transitioning into work as well as the needs of excluded groups.
We will seek gender balance in all activities and strive for a heathy diversity of backgrounds in the group (like mixing marginalized
and socially excluded learners with unemployed graduates and maybe even business entrepreneurs wishing to radically change
their views on how to make business to make it more sustainable).
BENEFICIARIES: LOCAL COMMUNITIES
The SIRCle participants will bring social innovations to their contexts and create positive impact in their local communities. So the
eventual beneficiaries (as an indirect target group) of our training programs will be local communities in disadvantaged areas.
COUNTRY-SPECIFIC TARGET GROUPS
In Spain and Romania, the partners are already in good contact with local Roma and disadvantage communities and will offer the
SIRCle training to them. In Spain, there are also very good relationships between the partner and local and regional authorities for
employment and social economy and entrepreneurship networks (REAS, emprender.coop, Cooperama). In Scotland, the Findhorn
Foundation has established a Building Bridges programme working with local disadvantaged youth and with adults with learning
difficulties. Its staff will be trained to deliver the SIRCle to these groups.
In Belgium, Still Consulting is based in Euclides, a local development agency which supports social enterprise in the district of
Anderlecht, Brussels.
This area has some of the highest levels of deprivation and unemployment in the city, as well as a very young population.
Still Consulting together with Aeidl will offer the SIRCle training as well to them and including people from other parts of Brussels, in
order to create a diverse and healthy environment for co-learning and the building of a local support- and knowledge community.
Still Consulting will also focus on offering the training to people working in the renewable energy sector - training at work - , as to
bridge the sustainable technology sector with the social developments and the building of awareness of the inclusion of the whole
community and cycle in order to create resilient, inclusive systems.

The project will use innovative and student centered pedagogical approaches, derived from work already completed in former EU
Learning Partnerships. These will include Partnership Education, Transformative, Experiential and Action Learning. These pedagogies
make the educational process directly relevant to participants lives, focussing on the solutions to real problems that people
experience as they set up projects. They educate the whole person: head, heart, hands and senses. The use of what are called
"multiple intelligences" as developed by Howard Gardner, has become a popular way of conveying a pedagogy that includes more

creative ways of learning, integrating hands-on experience, theory and research, time for reflection, pitching to experts, interactive
group processes and more. Different people learn in different ways and the SIRCle Trainings will be offered with this awareness.
These pedagogical approaches enable the integration of participants from vastly diverse backgrounds and with diverse abilities. The
power of collective wisdom that comes to play when we bring our diverse strengths together is brought into all activities of the
strategic partnership. Embracing diversity and communicating across all borders is seen and propagated as a source of strength and
innovation.
Training facilities will be chosen that are easily accessible to those with disabilities.
Some partners of our consortium (like plenum, AEIDL, Romania in Tranzitie) have already a track record of working with
disadvantaged people (like young unemployed).
With the competence and intention of this consortium and the financial resources of ERASMUS+, all the participants with fewer
opportunities will understand that they have a great opportunity to become skilled in what the World and Europe needs at this
stage and will see themselves as a part of the solution.

Outcomes
This transnational meeting will represent the official closing of this

Description
Short video clips of up to 15 min. that will introduce both the Core
Story and various Learning Patterns of the T2R-4C Curriculum and
would help to bring awareness amongst general public. These
videos will be viewed online or downloaded (at the project website,
partner websites and also on YouTube/Vimeo). The Core Story and
some important Learning Patterns will be presented both by various
SIRCle Trainers in their own languages and by animation
(stopmotion, graphic recording...). Most video clips will however be
in English. There will be also a introductory promotional video (to

Altekio will co-ordinate and facilitate the creation of these teaching
videos in collaboration with all the partners and with the support of
audiovisual communication experts. The process to create each
video will be:
1. Experts of each Learning Pattern (organizations partners
members) will create a collaborative online document to define the
main contents of the videos.
2. After that, they will have a videoconference to agree on the final
content proposal.
3. This document will provide the screenwriter basis to create the
script and Altekio will co-work in this script with the screenwriter.
4. Partner experts will email feedback about the script. If any change

Added value of these learning, teaching or training activities with regards to the achievement of the project objectives:
We will generate a body of Learning Patterns and a new curriculum, a best-of distilled from Transition to Resilience, Pioneers of
Change, PACTES and other relevant curricula. We will have material (like teaching videos) publicly available on our website and so
our learnings will crosspolinate other institutions focussing on transformational learning for social change.
The body of 16-18 adult trainers, drawn from Austria, Belgium, Portugal, Romania, Spain and the UK to deliver the SIRcle curriculum
in their respective countries - also after the period of our Erasmus+ partnership has ended. The learnings and best practices will also
enhance the existing work and offers of the partner organisations.
The participants of Training for Trainers and Pilot Courses (altogether 228 participants planned) will be empowered to become
active citizens and social innovators - and to create projects geared towards building resilience in their regions and establishing
sources of right livelihood. So their activities will add value to the communities of the participants. Because we will choose
participants from disadvantaged backgrounds the outcomes will add value also to their social contexts, on a communal, national,
transnational and trans-sector levels.
Arrangements for recognition or validation of the learning outcomes of the participants in learning, teaching or training activities:
1. Training of Trainers Social Innovation for Resilient Communities:
Experienced trainers from the partner organisations will learn to lead the SIRCle Pattern Language Curriculum (the contents of which
will be developed in detail during this project).
For the Training of Trainers there will be an application process making sure that the participants have adequate preliminary
experience in facilitating group processes, a deep understanding of Sustainable Development, Transition to Resilience and Social
Innovation Processes and an understanding of the connection of inner and outer dimensions of change.
At the end of the training for trainers educational cycle the trainers will receive a formal recognition of their qualification as Trainer in
Social Innovation for Resilient Communities and will be endorsed from the partners to start leading SIRCle Trainings.
We will set up a feedback process for the participants of the SIRCle Trainings (including feedback forms) which will help to evaluate
the quality of the trainings.

Participants of the SIRCle Trainings will receive a certificate as Social Innovator for Resilient Communites. The certificate shall be

What is the expected impact on the participants, participating organisations, target groups and other relevant stakeholders?
The exchange of knowledge from and about their respective innovative projects on leadership and/or transition will raise the
awareness of all participants (staff, trainees and adult learners) in several ways. Participants will learn how transactional leadership
can empower people to take care of their social and ecological environment more actively. They will learn how to use different
methods and what their impacts are on individual motivation, as well as on group communication, collective intelligence,
community building, and sustainability. By comparing experiences from and methods used in the different countries in their specific
cultural context, they will reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of their own habits and approaches. The project will enhance
all partners understanding of theoretical concepts regarding leadership and transition, as well as their practical implications in view
of both practical and political action for transition, community building and sustainable living.

- greater awareness about the opportunities offered by expanding markets such as sustainable communities development and

attitudes.

European networks of local development action groups
The European Network for Rural Development (ENRD) www.enrd.europa.eu

ENRD is the hub that connects rural development stakeholders throughout the EU, in order to improve the implementation of the
EUs rural development policy. It serves as a platform for sharing ideas and experiences, conducts research, promotes good practice,
and supports transnational collaboration. Two main rural development strategies include diversification and quality improvement,
both of which have a sustainability dimension. The ENRD also operates the Rural Entrepreneurship Gateway, which among other
things lists tools in areas including local food production, social entrepreneurship and the inclusion of specific target groups.
The target audiences for SIRCle tools, products and know-how would be National Rural Networks (NRNs), Member State authorities,
LEADER Local Action Groups (LAGs) and rural development organisations with an EU perspective.
The Fisheries Area Network (FARNET)

This is a network of over 300 Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs) in 21 EU Member States who are implementing sustainable
development in coastal areas, with the support of the European Fisheries Fund (EFF). Diversification and valorising sustainable
production technologies are key strategies used. Examples include the development of pesca-tourism, developing local short circuit
distribution channels, and adding-value through improving quality and sustainability. The target audiences would include national
networks, fisheries local action groups, as well as fisheries coops and associations.
European umbrella organisations concerned with sustainability
- ECOLISE, the European network for community-led action on climate change and sustainability. Brings together all the main
networks active in this area (including Transition Network, GEN, ICLEI, GAIA Education, Permaculture.), including their national level
representations, as well as many smaller scale initiatives.
- Transition Network (www.transitionnetwork.org), a network of local, citizen-led initiatives actively engaged in preparing their
communities for the transition away from the use of fossil fuels by building resilience and developing sustainable lifestyles (approx.
1000 groups across Europe).
- GAIA Education (http://www.gaiaeducation.net/), promotes a holistic approach to education for sustainable development by
developing curricula for sustainable community design. While drawing upon best practices within ecovillages and transition settings
worldwide, Gaia Education works in partnership with universities, ecovillages, government and non-government agencies and the
United Nations.
- ICLEI, local governments for sustainability (http://www.iclei-europe.org), is an association of over 1,200 local governments that
represents the interests of local authorities within the United Nations and at international policy forums. It is a movement driving
positive change on a global scale through programmes and campaigns on local sustainability. ICLEI is the only network of
sustainable cities operating worldwide.

AEIDL is a multicultural and multilingual organisation. Its permanent staff are qualified and experienced in the management of

AEIDLs core team is complemented by an extensive network of external partners and experts in every country of the European
Union. This ensures the best combination of content-related expertise, geographical coverage and communication capacity. It also
facilitates the development and management of transnational co-operation and networking, which is a key competence of AEIDL.
In addition to the provision of services to administrations in the Member States, AEIDL has over 25 years of experience in
coordinating contracts for the European Commission. It is currently working with the Environment, Employment and Social Affairs,

AEIDL will provide an IT specialist, a communications expert (with experience in journalism/editing), and a knowledge transfer
expert (with experience in dissemination of project results to specialised target audiences).
In total we plan 150 days for IT technicians and communication & knowledge experts - for creating the website and a learning
platform, teaching videos, upload materials, set up working systems, etc.
Each of the partners will be responsible to use their resources in such a way that they can fulfill their dissemination goals on national
levels.
What kind of dissemination activities do you intend to carry out (relevance) and through which channels?
Dissemination activities will focus mainly on creating awareness of the project and its activities, providing updates on the progress
of the project, and facilitating access to project outputs, including training material and project results.
Channels
1. All main project outcomes will be made available from the Erasmus+ Dissemination platform.
2. Website
The project will establish a SICRle website based on developing the existing T2R website (www. transition2resilience.org) which will
communicate the projects messages and act as a repository for the resources it creates which will continue following the projects
completion. It will also facilitate internal communication. It will contain: components of the package of training materials (for
viewing and/or download). This will consist of a cloud link to access and download all teaching and learning materials produced for
the duration of the project (until 2017), and to access and share previously existing learning materials:
introductory promotional video (for viewing and/or download)
announcements and reports of the projects own and external events
a description of the project
profiles of the project partners
relevant documentation (web links and where possible downloads)
news of current developments in the project
accessible journalistic success stories of the take-up of the SIRCle tools and products
links to useful organisations and public programmes
possibility to subscribe to e-mail news stream (enabling building of mailing list)
an opportunity for users to feed back questions, comments and suggestions

The website will be in English with core elements of the SIRCle Curriculum available in 6 further European languages and will be

illustrated as appropriate with photographs, diagrams and maps.

Links will be established between this website and the partners own websites.
2. Social media
The project will raise awareness of its activities using social media, by establishing a page on Facebook, the most widely-used social
network. This will announce developments, facilitate informal networking and mutual learning, and enable feedback from a broad
public. It will point interested readers to articles on the project website.
3. Project updates/press releases
The project will send out periodic (at least annually) updates by e-mail, also linking to information on the project website. This will
be disseminated via the communications activities of the partner organisations (for example, through the GEN newsletter, which is
circulated quarterly to over 12,000 subscribers) as well as to a mailing list of new contacts developed within the framework of the
project. This mailing list will be extended during the course of the project, based on feedback from the website and from referrals by
other organisations. The project updates will also be circulated to relevant newspapers, magazines and journals. The target
publications are those covering local development, sustainable development, social enterprise and social inclusion, primarily within
Europe.
4. Video films
Each national partner will prepare several short training videos, which can be posted online for download (on the project website,
partner websites but also on YouTube). The videos will be promoted to organisations that are potentially interested in taking up the
SIRCle tools and product (see point 3 above). The videos could also be run on a continuous loop at events. This will serve to raise
awareness among a broad public.
5. Wikipedia
Articles will be extended and initiated on Wikipedia, the user-generated encyclopaedia. The main language used will be English
although some articles will be created and extended in other common European languages.
6. Flyer
A short flyer presenting the project, its main objectives and proposed outputs will be prepared and printed (useable in electronic
and printed formats). This flyer will be used to support dissemination activities at meetings and events.
7. Multiplier events
Each partner will organise two dissemination events per country (12 events in total), with one of these taking place after the pilot
training and focusing on disseminating the results and outputs. The partners will seek to maximise the opportunity of these events
to promote wider dissemination through related public relation activities.
8. Closing event
The final Transnational Meeting will be timed to coincide with an important dissemination event in Brussels. This could, for example,
be the Green Week event, which is an annual event and normally takes place around May/June. The project partners will try to
ensure that this coincides with a meeting of ECOLISE, thereby ensuring dissemination among practioners as well as policymakers.
Erasmus+ promotes an open access requirement for all materials produced through its projects. In the case your project is producing
intellectual outputs/ tangible deliverables, please describe if and how you intend to promote the free access for the public, through
the internet, to a digital form thereof. In case a limitation should be foreseen for the use of the open licence, please specify the
reasons, extent and nature of this limitation.
The partnership will ensure that all the outputs of this projects will be made available on-line as requested by Erasmus+ program
and in the spirit of creative commons.
The use of it will be open under a CC BY-NC-ND Creative Commons License in order to ensure the quality and correct application of
the work resulting from this partnership.
How will you ensure that the project's results will remain available and/or will be used by others?
The partnership will ensure the presence of the website and maintenance on-line for at least 5 years after the end of the present
project. After this time, one of the partners or a possible emergent organization will take over this task, ensuring the availability to

SEN is a European Social Fund Learning Network which runs from 2012 until 2015. It comprises ESF Managing Authorities and social
enterprise federal and development organisations from nine EU Member States, and is the successor to the Better Future for the
Social Economy Learning Network. Its objective is to build the capacity of national and regional authorities to design and implement
Structural Fund operational programmes to create comprehensive support ecosystem for social enterprises.
Its work programme includes a series of five peer review meetings, held in different countries, which analyse 15 good practices
groups into five clusters: identity and branding, start-up support structures, consolidation and growth, finance, and governance and
policy co-ordination. The results will be disseminated in the form of a matrix of good practices along with policy guidelines, and
presented at a final conference as well as being published online.
Its primary impacts will be on: Structural Fund programmers at national and regional level, on social enterprise policy-makers at EU,
national and regional level, and on social enterprise support organisations at all levels
The improved design of Structural Fund operational programmes will have secondary impacts on existing social enterprises as well
as people intending to start new social enterprises.

The key target audiences to be impacted here are NGOs working to alleviate poverty along with policy-makers on poverty and social
exclusion.

Dissemination through the partner organisations

To support and complement dissemination activities at European level, the partner organisations will also undertake targeted
dissemination activities at national, regional and local level. The focus here will be on organisations from different sectors, that
could, potentially, integrate the developed training modules into their programme of activities. This would include training
agencies, local development organisations and enterprise and social enterprise support bodies. AEIDL will support the other
partners in undertaking this task.
G.3. Sustainability
What are the activities and results that are planned to be maintained after the end of the EU funding including the needed resources
to sustain them?
A Community of Practice CoP (Wenger, 1998) of the Trainers and a Community of Practice for the Trainees for further sharing, colearning and supporting will start operating.
There are at least two platforms which shall be built upon: the International Partnership for Transformative Learning (co-founded by
Plenum/Pioneers of Change) and the Global Ecovillage Network - both with large yearly gatherings as opportunities for the
practitioners to strengthen the connections on a personal level.
Following the model of Pioneers of Change / Plenum in Austria, the aim is to empower the participants of the trainings to create
local ongoing communities of changemakers. These network of social innovators from local communities of practice will get ever
more dense and powerful through subsequent SIRCle trainings and growing numbers of alumni over the years.
Plenum will facilitate (through their website, facebook page and meeting opportunities at their international gatherings) this
sustainable network of social innovators. A strong identity, united by a shared mission, as part of a larger movement for sustainable
change and a more resilient future will emerge.
Further to the completion of the pilot training, AEIDL will seek to integrate the course content into other training activities, in
particular its training in relation to Community-Led Local development (CLLD). CLLD offers the potential for local partnership, or
local actions groups (LAGs), across the EU to access funding under some or all of the European Structural and Investment (ESI) Funds
to develop and implement local development strategies. In particular, in some EU countries, this will provide the opportunity for
existing LAGs operating in rural and fisheries areas to broaden the scope of their activities to target groups that are socially
excluded or disadvantaged. AEIDL will seek to adapt the pilot training to be used as a tool by these LAGs to engage with and
support these target groups.
Still Consulting will integrate and adapt the content into other existing training and courses within in the Art and Culture sector in
Belgium. These existing tools have been elaborated over the last years lead mainly by organisations such as Foam Brussels (http://
fo.am), a cultural laboratory re-imagining possible futures at the interstices of art, science, nature and everyday life, Pulse Network
(pulsenetwerk.be), the flemish transition network for culture, Greentrack (www.greentrack.be), focusing on reducing the ecological
footprint in the art and culture sector, and MUS-E (www.mus-e.be), a platform for socially engaged artists to develop their practice in
the contexts of education, leisure time and health activities.
Still Consulting will work in close collaboration with these networks together in order to develop it further and weave it into existing
modules of trainings. This can be a start also to reach out to trans-national art and culture networks, such as http://www.teh.net ,
a European network of independent cultural centres, providing a dynamic forum for ideas, experiences and exchange, supporting its
members and their communities.
Altekio will integrate and adapt the content further into other existing training and courses they are involved in, especially in
collaboration with PACTES partner in Spain, Proempleo. Other networks, such as Emprender.coop, Grupo Tangente, REAS, which join

their common efforts for social entrepreneurship, will be part in the application of the curriculum. Altekio will develop the
promotion of green employment, aligned with SIRCle curriculum, as part of their daily activity.
Romania in Tranzitie is a community-managed organization based on a self-reliant network of facilitators that will integrate the
CIRCle curricula in their activities. This network will be supported by a network of existing local community managed centers
focused in supporting individuals and communities with tools and training in their work.

The Sustainable Innovation for Resilient Communities (SIRCle) project uses adult education to address one of the most pressing
needs of our time, namely how to marry effective grassroots responses to climate and social change with the capacity to make a
sustainable living in a challenging economic climate. Adult learners will acquire the skills needed to set up and run a social
enterprise and sustainable business that contributes to the sustainability of their region. In this way they will be supporting the
development of a new economy based on the creation and distribution of the goods and services needed to deliver a sustainable
and resilient future.
Social enterprises are an essential source of jobs, in particular for groups of people who find it difficult to obtain work. These include
youth, long-term unemployed, disabled people and people in rural communities, as well as members of the other disadvantaged
groups cited above. While social enterprises operate on a commercial basis, their primary purpose is to serve their communities This
includes the delivery of local products and services and the creation of job opportunities for people who otherwise might remain
unemployed.
The SIRCle Project brings together a diverse range of organisations from Austria, Belgium, Romania, Spain, Portugal and the UK
(including a university; a social and holistic business, grassroots communities that train people in sustainability, resilience and social
enterprise; organisations with consultative status to the UN and the EU, and others which work at the coalface with marginalised
people such as the Roma communities in Romania and Spain) to achieve two aims over a three-year period, from November 2014 to
October 2017.
Year One: Capacity Building. Starting in November 2014, two representatives from each of the 7 Partner organisations will meet in
the Findhorn Foundation ecovillage in Northern Scotland for 5-days to experience together one of the cornerstone trainings that the
new curriculum will be built upon, the Transition to Resilience Training. The curriculum will be highly experiential and innovative,
using a core story as the principal vehicle for the learnings and then adding different ingredients according to the nationality, size
and composition of each group. It will also be translated into seven languages to meet the needs to each Partner country.
Partners will then meet monthly online and in person in regular intervals in order to share a variety of training methods and
materials in order to create the new Sustainable Innovation for Resilient Communities (SIRCle) curriculum. Alongside the face to face
meetings and monthly online conference calls, webinars will be conducted and at least 16 15-minute teaching videos produced to
augment the trainings.
Years Two and Three: Delivery of the trainings. In this phase of the SIRCle Project, each Partner organisation will run 2 Pilot Trainings
of the new curriculum. Each training will have a minimum of 16 participants, thus the Project will reach at least 228 participants. We
aim to ensure that the courses comprise around people from the disadvantaged groups and people from groups that are more
established in the mainstream and are now expanding their awareness to include issues relating to sustainability. Each group will
learn from the other, the final outcome being the creation of at least xxx social enterprises in each country that will enable
participants to develop a source of livelihood while exhibiting active citizenship in a way that serves the transition to resilient and
sustainable communities.
The long term impact of this SIRCle Project will be the creation of at least 18 sustainable ventures in 6 EU countries, the creation of a
cutting edge, innovative curriculum that supports both societal transition to resilience and the establishment of social enterprises;
and the opportunity to disseminate this curriculum and the best practice that accompanies it, within the UN, parts of the EU and
within universities.
