1. Introduction to Quick Guide

The Student Guidebook for the academic year 2013/2014 prepared by the Faculty of Engineering
Technology has presented in detail the different programmes, the complete lists of courses under each
programme, categories of courses, the blend of course categories to be completed for the award of a
particular degree and specialisation etc. When you read the Student Guidebook, you may sometimes find
it difficult to determine which course combinations you should opt for in order to complete the study
programme within the shortest possible number of years. If you are ready to take up the challenge, this
Quick Guide tells you a course combination for the completion of the study programme within five or
four years depending on whether your study programme is Bachelor of Technology (Engineering) or
Bachelor of Industrial Studies.
However, there are other combinations apart from those given in this guide, which may enable you to
complete the study programme according to your preference of selection.
This Quick Guide focuses on all the specializations falling under the two main programmes offered by
the Faculty of Engineering, Bachelor of Technology (Engineering) with seven specializations and
Bachelor of Industrial Studies with four specialisations.
At the first instance, you have to select your major programme of Study and then the specialisation and
then you select the courses to which you should register to complete the selected programme in the
selected specialisation. The Completion of any programme specialisation in the shortest possible time is
only possible if you have fulfilled the entry requirement for that programme specialisation.
Bachelor of Technology (Engineering) course combinations are for those who have passed all the
courses of the Foundation for Technology, or GCE (A/L) Mathematic stream and General English at
GCE (A/L).
Course combinations for the specializations of
Civil, Electrical, Electronic &
Telecommunications, Computer, Mechanical, Mechatonics and Textile Engineering disciplines are
presented in this booklet.
Bachelor of Industrial Studies (Agriculture) course combination is for those who have passed in three
subjects in the Bio Science stream (including Biology) and General English at GCE (A/L).
Bachelor of Industrial Studies (Textile Manufacture, Apparel Production and Management,
Fashion Design and Product Development) course combinations are for those who have passed three
subjects in any stream at GCE (A/L) and General English at GCE (A/L).
After registering for the courses recommended for different specialisations in this Quick Guide and by
progressing from one year to the next by successful completion of all the courses of every stage in the
respective year, you will be able to get the award of the relevant degree within the shortest possible time.
However, you must remember that you should have sufficient time to spend to study all the courses you
have offered in a particular year. This Quick guide makes some recommendations only and the final
decision is yours.
It is important to note that you should read and understand the Student Guidebook for 2013/2014 given
to you too, because it provides more information about the University, Engineering Faculty and its
Departments, study programmes, staff, assessment criteria, and other facilities available in the
University, which information is not provided in this Quick Guide. This Quick Guide is not a substitute
to the Student Guidebook, but it is a quick reference to select course combinations those allow to
complete your studies and obtain the chosen degree within a stipulated shortest period of time.
Students registering for the first time with the Faculty must register for the course FEW3001 Learning
to learn at a distance also. This course will guide you to be familiar with the Open and Distance Learning
study system of the Faculty and to develop your study skills to learn effectively. For re-registering
students either a pass in FEW3001 or passing of 24 course credits at level3 is required to re-register for
courses at level four and above.

Many courses in any study programme require you to have sufficient knowledge of English language;
otherwise, you will find difficult to show a progress in your studies. Hence English language knowledge
is a prerequisite to follow courses of all the programmes. Given below are the English language
requirements for courses at each Level.
Level 03 - LSE3201 (CR) or VRL1201 or VRL3200
Level 04 - LSE3201 (EL) or VRL1201 or VRL3200
Level 05 - LSE3201 (P) or VRL1201 or VRL3200
Level 06 - LSE3201 (P) or VRL1201 or VRL3200
LSE3201 English for General Academic Purpose
VRL1201 or VRL3200 This will be explained to you at the time of registration.
CR- Concurrent Registration; EL Eligible; P - Pass
If you have a pass in GCE (A/L) General English, or obtained 70% or more in the English Grading Test,
you do not have to register for English for General Academic Purpose (LSE3201).

2. Bachelor of Technology (Engineering) Programme

The course combinations given here are for those students who have passed three subjects in the
mathematics stream and the General English at G.C.E. (A/L) examination.
