THE WASHINGTONS SECTION OF THE TYNE & WEAR METRO: Development options in terms of old railway lines using
RESEARCH PAPER by Gleb K.Samoilov

THE SUMMARY
The Southern part is one of most important sections of the Tyne and Wear
Metro network expansion. A main node of this site is the Washington (the
Metropolitan Borough of Sunderland).
In this section will use non-operated and partially disassembled railways of
the Leamside Line and coastline Sunderland Seaham line with exit to the
Tyne and Wear southern border at the County Durham.
However, transport services for residents can be significantly improved by
using the potential of not only these segments, but also all old railways in this
region.
As a result of the proposed development schemes may greatly improve
transport links within the Tyne and Wear conurbation.

THE WASHINGTONS SECTION OF THE TYNE & WEAR METRO: Development options in terms of old railway lines using
RESEARCH PAPER by Gleb K.Samoilov

THE MAIN PART

1. The current situation and main proposed extensions
to the Metroat the Washington's section
The development of the Metro network the actual task to improve of the Tyne &
Wear Conurbations transport system. Development options are constantly studied by
various companies and individual specialists (Development of Integrated Public
Transport Network creating ideas [1, P.21-23; 32-55]; Prospects of the Passenger
Transport network development [2, P.12-21] and other).
The initial idea of pre-emptive use of unexploited railways, implemented in most
of the existing Tyne and Wear Metro network, continues to dominate in concepts of its
further development. One reason for this failure to use old railway lines for the urban
development. Now they are mostly wide alleys. They are not integrated in road
networks of built-up areas. On some, and quite extensive areas even rail grids with
turnouts of main, station and special tracks remain in place [3].
The government ompany, which responsible for the provision, planning and
development of passenger transport, announced in March 2014 the Concept of the
prospects for expanding of the Metro network (Nexus Metro Strategy 2030 / Proposed
extensions to the Metro). Potential Network Extension Corridors: A Extensions to the
Current Network Sunderland to Seaham, Sunderland (South Hylton)
Washington Pelaw, Cobalt Link; B Street-running Operations Metrocentre
and Team Valley, West Newcastle South Shields to Doxford Park via Sunderland city
centre [4, P. 91-112; 5, P. 14-16].
One of the most important areas of the Tyne and Wear Metro new development
(in terms of the use of the old railway lines) is a district of the Washington. The
importance of this area is confirmed by the great public interest [6; 7; 8; 9]. Announced
plans (Proposed extensions to the Metro, March, 2014 Network Extensions Map [5,
p.16]) include the potential corridor extension on this site. This is the line Pelaw
Washington North The Galleries Washington South South Hylton. This is an
interpretation of the one of project ideas of the late 20th century Project
SUNDERLAND METRO EXTENSION (by Steer Davies Gleave, 1991): Pelaw
Victoria Viaduct via Leamside Line Sunderland (Option 5). This Project involved the
construction of 9 stations on the segment Pelaw South Hylton [10]. There were
other options: The Tyne and Wear Metro Development proposal 2011; Tyne and
Wear Metro development Option of the Metro line on the Washington, 2013; The
Tyne and Wear Metro Development THE BLYTH JARROW DURHAM LINE (the
option), 2013 [11; 12; 13; 14]. There is an option to restore the passenger and freigh
service of Leamside line as part of the rail network [15].
Another proposed extensions to the Metro the line Sunderland South
Sunderland Ryhope Seaham: Ryhope & Seaham, a proposal drawn up by Tyne
and Wear Passenger Authority to use the existing Durham coast line south of
Sunderland [16; 17].

2. Other options of the Metro development at the Washington's

section
Transport services for residents can be greatly improved, based on the potential
of all old railway lines [18; 19; 20]. To do this, it is advisable to use of non-operated and

partially disassembled parts of lines: Leamside Pelaw, Penshaw Hylton,

Pelton Brockley Whins.
The implementation can be divided into three stages (Figures 1 and 2).
The First stage: the Metro line Pelaw Follingsby Usworth Washington
Penshaw Fence Houses Colliery Row (15,30 km / 9,50 mi). This portion of nonoperated and disused sections of the railway Leamside Pelaw. Four stations on the
ground of their old counterparts stations (Usworth, Washington, Penshaw, Fence
Houses). Two new stations (Follingsby, Colliery Row).
The Second stage: the Metro line South Hylton Cox Green Biddick Lane
Vigo (4,13km / 2,56 mi + 3,93 km / 2,44 mi). There are disused sections of railways
Pelton Brockley Whins (Vigo Biddick Lane), Penshaw Hylton (Cox Green
South Hylton) and two new tracks: Biddick Lane to Victoria Viaduct, Cox Green to
Victoria Viaduct. Three stations on the ground of their old counterparts stations.
The Third stage: connecting portions of Metro lines Biddick Lane
Washington and Penshaw Cox Green (0,62 km / 0,39 mi +1,30 km / 0,81 mi).
There are disused sections of railways Pelton Brockley Whins and Penshaw
Hylton.
Based on these new Metro lines formed six convenient routes (Figure 3):
COLLIERY ROW PELAW to Gateshead (Colliery Row Fence Houses
Penshaw Washington Usworth Follingsby Pelaw) 6 new stations, 1 operating
station;
COLLIERY ROW SOUTH HYLTON to Sunderland (Colliery Row Fence
Houses Penshaw Cox Green South Hylton) 4 new stations, 1 operated station;
COLLIERY ROW VIGO (Colliery Row Fence Houses Penshaw Biddick
Lane Vigo) 5 new stations;
VIGO SOUTH HYLTON to Sunderland (Vigo Biddick Lane Cox Green
South Hylton) 3 new stations, 1 operating station;
VIGO PELAW to Gateshead (Vigo Biddick Lane Washington Usworth
Follingsby Pelaw) 5 new stations, 1 operating station;
PELAW WASHINGTON SOUTH HYLTON (Pelaw Follingsby Usworth
Washington Cox Green South Hylton) 4 new stations, 2 operating stations.

3. South part of the Metro developmental perspective

After the implementation of three stages of Washington's section development it
is advisable to continue the expansion of the Tyne and Wear metro network (in terms of
the use of old railway lines [21]).
Promising areas of expansion are following lines (Figure 4):
1). The Metro line VIGO PELTON BEAMISH STANLEY ANNFIELD
PLAIN CONSETT (19,75 km / 12,25 mi). There are disused sections of railways
Birtley - Pelton 2nd Consett (Pelton Consett), Pelton 1st South Shields (Pelton
Vigo). Five stations on the ground of their old counterparts stations.
2). The Metro line COLLIERY ROW LEAMSIDE FRANKLAND SIDING
(6,49 km / 4,02 mi). There are disused sections of the railway Penshaw Durham
(Colliery Row Frankland Siding). Two stations on the ground of their old counterparts
stations.
3). The Metro line COLLIERY ROW RAINTON BRIDGE HETTON-LEHOLE MURTON SEATON RYHOPE GRANGETOWN SUNDERLAND
(19,92 km / 12,35 mi). There are disused sections of railways Fence Houses Low
Moorsley (Colliery Row Rainton Bridge new connected track), Pittington
