CIAM,Congrsinternationauxdarchitecturemoderne,wasanorganizationofarchitects
foundedbetween1928and1959topromoteanddiscusstheprinciplesofmodern
architecture.Team10wasformedasareactionwithinCIAMaround1953.AsCIAMbegan
todissolve,vanEyckandasmallgroupofyoungarchitectsformedtheirownorganization.
Whiletheyremainedautonomousasdesigners,theTeam10architectsmettoshareand
discusstheirwork,includingvanEycksAmsterdamOrphanage
CCAMellonLectures
Atthetimeofitscompletion,theAmsterdamOrphanagewaslocatedontheoutskirtsof
thecity.Itwascommissionedasanorphanageforchildrenofallagesandincludes
sleepingquarters,akitchen,laundryroom,gymnasium,library,andadministrativespaces.
VanEyckspokeoftheOrphanageasasmallurbanstudy.Hewroteahousemustbelike
asmallcityifitstobearealhouse,acitylikealargehouseifitstobearealcityinan
essaypublishedin1962titledStepsTowardaConfigurativeDiscipline.
ThereforevanEycksdesignsfortheOrphanagewerethoseofbothahomeforthe
children,aswellastheplanofasmallcity.Hecreatedadecentralizedurbannodewith
manypointsofinteractionwithintheplan.VanEyckwasinterestedinanonhierarchical
developmentofcitiesandintheAmsterdamOrphanagehecreatedabuildingwithmanyin
betweenconditionstobreakdownthehierarchyofspaces.
Thebuildingisconstructedoutoftwosizesofmodules,asmallersizefortheresidences,
andalargersizeforcommunityspaces.Themodulesconsistoffourroundcolumnsatthe
cornerswithadomedroofofprecastconcreteontop.Thefloorisalsoconcrete.The

manyfacadesinthebuildingareeitheraglasswallorasolidwallmadewithdarkbrown
bricks.
WithintheOrphanage,unitsofprogramarelaidoutonanorthogonalgrid.Theunitsproject
offtwodiagonalpathssothateachunithasmultipleexteriorfacades.Byprojectingoffofa
diagonalwithinthegrid,vanEyckcreatesanequalamountofnegativespacesfromthe
positiveshesformed.Eachindividualunitisthenneighboredbyitsownoutdoorspace.
Alargercourtyardisoffsetdiagonallyfromtheresidentialspaces,andtheentranceand
administrativespacesconnectwiththestreet,thelargecourtyard,aswellasthe
residentialunits.VanEyckavoidscreatingacentralpointwithintheOrphanagebyallowing
forsuchfluidconnectionsbetweenallspaces.
TheAmsterdamOrphanageisvanEycksvisionofabalancedcommunity.Hisdesign
earnedhiminternationalrecognitionandestablishedhishumanisttheoriesinabuiltproject.
