MERCEDES

Mercedes was a brand of the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG). DMG which

began to develop in 1900, after the death of its co-founder, Gottlieb Daimler.
Although the name was not lodged as a trade name until 23 June 1902 and had to
wait until 26 September to be registered legally, the brand name eventually would be
applied to an automobile model built by Wilhelm Maybach to specifications by Emil
Jellinek that was delivered to him on 22 December 1900. By Jellinek's contract, the
new model contained a newly designed engine designated "Daimler-Mercedes". This
engine name is the first instance of the use of the name, Mercedes, by DMG. The
automobile model would later be called, the Mercedes 35 hp.

An Austrian diplomat based in Nice, a business man running a profitable business

selling cars, and a racing enthusiast, Emil Jellinek had been racing DMG
automobiles under the pseudonym Mercds, after his daughter, Mercds
Jellinek. Later he contracted with DMG for a small series of dedicated sports
cars containing an engine that officially bore his daughter's name. He raced them
very successfully, gaining recognition that increased interest in customers and
Jellinek was placed on the board of directors of DMG. This model was a significant
advancement in the history of automobiles. Jellinek seems to have become
obsessed with the name and even had his name changed to Jellinek-Mercedes.
Maybach quit DMG in 1907 and started up his own business.

The name, Mercedes, later was used to represent DMG in another new brand
name, Mercedes-Benz, created in 1926 when it was applied to all vehicles produced
by the new company, Daimler-Benz AG, resulting from the merger of Benz &
Cie and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft in that year. The last name of Karl Benz was
retained in the new brand, but since DMG had sold exclusive licences to foreign
companies, they couldn't use the name of their founder, Daimler, legally in all
countries and decided to use the name of their most popular model. Since Jellinek
was a member of the board of directors by the time of the merger, the name was
promoted for continued good luck to the new company.

History

Mercedes was a brand in the Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG) which began to
develop in 1901, after the death of its co-founder, Gottlieb Daimler.

On 30 March 1900, few weeks after the death of Gottlieb Daimler, Wilhelm Bauer
decided spontaneously to enter the Nice-La Turbie hill climb but crashed fatally after
hitting a rock on the first turn while avoiding spectators. This caused DMG to
abandon racing.

Nonetheless, Emil Jellinek came to an agreement with DMG on 2 April 1900 by

promising the large sum of 550,000 Goldmark if Wilhelm Maybach would design a
revolutionary sports car for him, later to be called the Mercedes 35 hp, of which 36
units had to be delivered before 15 October. The contract also included an order for
36 standard DMG 8 hp cars. Jellinek soon became a member of the DMG Board of
Management and obtained the exclusive dealership for the modelthat would
become the new Mercedes 35 hpfor France, Austria, Hungary, Belgium, and
United States of America. The first one was not delivered to Jellinek until 22
December, however.

In 1901, the car amazed the automobile world. Jellinek again won the Nice races,
easily beating his opponents in all the capacity classes and reaching 60 km/h. The
director of the French Automobile Club, Paul Meyan, stated: "We have entered the
Mercedes era", a sentiment echoed by newspapers worldwide.

The records set by the new Mercedes 35 hp model amazed the entire automobile
world. DMG's sales shot up, its Stuttgart plant was operating at full capacity, and it
was consolidating its future as an automobile manufacturerrather than merely an
engine manufacturer who built some automobiles. The number of employees
steadily increased from 340 in 1900 to 2,200 in 1904.

Mercedes was not lodged as a trade name for DMG automobile models until 23 June
1902, but soon the company decided to use the name as the trade name for its
entire line of automobile modelsand officially registered it on 26 September 1902.

Mercedes-Benz:

Mercedes-Benz is a multinational division of the German manufacturer Daimler AG,

and the brand is used for luxury automobiles, buses, coaches, and trucks.
Mercedes-Benz is headquartered in Stuttgart, Baden-Wrttemberg, Germany.
The name first appeared in 1926 under Daimler-Benz but traces its origins
to Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft's 1901 Mercedes and to Karl Benz's 1886Benz
Patent Motorwagen, which is widely regarded as the first automobile. MercedesBenz's slogan is "Das Beste oder nichts" (English: "The best or nothing"). MercedesBenz is part of the "German Big 3" luxury automakers, along with Audi and BMW,
which are the three best selling luxury automakers in the world.

History

Mercedes-Benz traces its origins to Karl Benz's creation of the first petrol-powered
car, the Benz Patent Motorwagen, financed by Bertha Benz and patented in January
1886, and Gottlieb Daimler and engineer Wilhelm Maybach's conversion of a
stagecoach by the addition of a petrol engine later that year. The
Mercedes automobile was first marketed in 1901 by Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft.
The first Mercedes-Benz brand name vehicles were produced in 1926, following the
merger of Karl Benz's and Gottlieb Daimler's companies into the Daimler-Benz
company. Throughout the 1930s, Mercedes-Benz produced the 770 model, a car
that was popular during Germany's Nazi period. Adolf Hitler was known to have
driven these cars during his time in power, with bulletproof windshields. Most of the
surviving models have been sold at auctions to private buyers. One of them is
currently on display at the War Museum in Ottawa, Ontario. Mercedes-Benz has
introduced many technological and safety innovations that later became common in
other vehicles. Mercedes-Benz is one of the best known and established automotive
brands in the world, and is also one of the world's oldest automotive brand still in
existence today, having produced the first petrol-powered car.

Innovations:
Numerous technological innovations have been introduced on Mercedes-Benz
automobiles throughout the many years of their production, including:

The internal combustion engined automobile was developed independently by

Benz and Daimler & Maybach in 1886

Daimler invented the honeycomb radiator of the type still used on all watercooled vehicles today

Daimler invented the float carburetor which was used until replaced by fuel
injection

The "drop chassis" the car originally designated the "Mercedes" by Daimler
was also the first car with a modern configuration, having the carriage lowered
and set between the front and rear wheels, with a front engine and powered rear
wheels. All earlier cars were "horseless carriages", which had high centres of
gravity and various engine/drive-train configurations

The first passenger road car to have brakes on all four wheels (1924)

The "safety cage" or "safety cell" construction with front and rear crumple
zones was first developed by Mercedes-Benz in 1951. This is considered by
many as the most important innovation in automobile construction from a safety
standpoint.

In 1959, Mercedes-Benz patented a device that prevents drive wheels from

spinning by intervening at the engine, transmission, or brakes. In 1987,
Mercedes-Benz applied its patent by introducing a traction control system that
worked under both braking and acceleration

Airbags were first introduced in the European market, beginning with model
year 1981 S-Class.

Mercedes-Benz was the first to introduce pre-tensioners to seat belts on the

1981 S-Class. In the event of a crash, a pre-tensioner will tighten the belt
instantaneously, removing any 'slack' in the belt, which prevents the occupant
from jerking forward in a crash

In September 2003, Mercedes-Benz introduced the world's first sevenspeed automatic transmission called '7G-Tronic'

Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), brake assist, and many other types of
safety equipment were all developed, tested, and implemented into passenger
cars first by Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz has not made a large fuss
about its innovations, and has even licensed them for use by competitors in the
name of improving automobile and passenger safety. As a result, crumple zones
and anti-lock brakes (ABS) are now standard on all modern vehicles.

Mercedes M156 engine

The most powerful naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine in the world is

the Mercedes-AMG, 6,208 cc M156 V8 engine at 85 PS (63 kW) per litre. The V8
engine is badged '63 AMG', and replaced the '55 AMG' M113 engine in most
models. The M156 engine produces up to 391 kW (532 PS; 524 bhp), and
although some models using this engine do have this output (such as the S63
and CL63 AMGs), specific output varies slightly across other models in the
range.

The (W211) E320 CDI which has a variable geometry turbocharger (VTG) 3.0litre V6 common rail diesel engine (producing 224 hp or 167 kW), set three
world endurance records. It covered 100,000 miles (160,000 km) in a record
time, with an average speed of 224.823 km/h (139.70 mph). Three identical cars
did the endurance run (one set above record) and the other two cars set world
records for time taken to cover 100,000 kilometres (62,137 mi) and 50,000 miles

(80,000 km) respectively. After all three cars had completed the run, their
combined distance was 300,000 miles (480,000 km) (all records were FIA
approved).

Mercedes-Benz pioneered a system called Pre-Safe to detect an imminent

crash and prepares the car's safety systems to respond optimally. It also
calculates the optimal braking force required to avoid an accident in emergency

situations, and makes it immediately available for when the driver depresses the
brake pedal. Occupants are also prepared by tightening the seat belt, closing the
sunroof and windows, and moving the seats into the optimal position.

At 181 horsepowers per litre, the M133 engine installed in Mercedes-Benz

A45 AMG is the most powerful series production four-cylinder turbocharged
motor (as of June 2013) and has one of the highest power density for a
passenger vehicle.

Mercedes vs. BMW: The War of Luxury

Luxury, what does it mean? For some it means a fancy dinner, well-prepared. For
others its a suit of fine Italian silk. Still others consider luxury something that you can
drive. They want a powerful, well-designed automobile. A car is so much more than
just a form of transportation. Its a status symbol, its a way of life, its something
bigger than itself. Thats especially true when dealing with vehicles from makers like
Mercedes and BMW.
These two companies have been going back and forth in competition with one
another for almost 100 years. BMW was born in 1917, by which time Mercedes was
about 17 years old. Even with the slight lead that Mercedes has, the competition has
been fast and furious. What can you expect? When two companies are so similar
and have such high-quality products, its bound to get a little competitive.

Mercedes And BMW History

Its important to look at the conditions that gave rise to these two mighty automakers
if you want to understand the roots of their epic struggle and where the companies
hope to go in the future. Its been a wild ride for both companies and it shows no sign
of stopping any time soon.
In 1900 the first unofficial Mercedes car was built. It was designed and developed by
Wilhelm Maybach, chief engineer at DMG. It was unofficial because the company
wasnt even called Mercedes at that time. The name came later in 1902. The
company was renamed in honour of a girl named Mercedes, who was the daughter
of a very valued customer. The company grew steadily for 56 years until a deal in
1958 with Studebaker-Packard Corp.

Teaming up with the US auto-maker allowed Mercedes to get its foot in the door in
the American market. This American business eventually led to a merger with
DaimlerChrysler, resulting in a company called Mercedes-Benz AMG. 2007 saw
Mercedes-Benz getting the fifth-highest rating for quality from J.D.Power and
Associates. This commitment to quality obviously didnt translate to higher gas
mileage, however, because they were fined 30 million dollars in 2009 for failing to
meet minimum gas mileage requirements.

1900 First Unofficial Mercedes

BMW, on the other hand, came about almost by accident. When Rapp Motorenwerke
was restructured in 1917, BMW was officially born. They were originally an airplane
engine manufacturer. 1923 saw them switching gears to motorcycle production. This
was because the Versailles Armistice Treaty made airplane engine production illegal.
They lasted out the war by making pots, pans, and bicycles. Motorcycle production
resumed in 1948. Four years later they rolled out their first car, the classic 501
model. In 1973 they moved into an even bigger production facility in Dingolfing when
they outgrew their Munich Plant. 2010 saw them outpacing Mercedes for the first
time in history.

BMW & Mercedes Car Stats

In 2012 Mercedes sold almost 2.1 million cars.BMW wasnt far behind with nearly 1.8
million cars. Mercedes made more than 90,000 million Euros off their sails. BMW
made closer to 83,000 million Euros (which is not too shabby). But how could they
possibly sell so many or make so much money? Well, for starters, the most
expensive BMW, the 750i, rings in at $137,000 (Around 87 Lakhs) . The most
expensive Mercedes, the SLR McLaren Roadster, costs just shy of half a million
dollars (A bit less then crore) !
These cars are definitely trading on the good names of their manufacturers. After all,
BMW is home to a car that can go from 0 to 60 in 4.4 seconds and has a max speed
of 230 mpg. That would be the G Power H6 Hurricane CS. On the other side of the
aisle is Mercedes-Benz with their SLR McLaren 772 Edition. Its a 640 HP monster
with a top speed of 209 mph that goes 0 to 60 in 3.6 seconds.

The BMW/Mercedes Rivalry Today

Its not hard to find many ways in which these two auto giants are still making moves
that mirror one another.
For starters, they both favour the American south for their production facilities. BMW
has a plant in South Carolina. Mercedes builds their American cars in Alabama.
When it comes to engine power, Mercedes has put their faith in superchargers.
BMW, on the other hand, went with turbochargers. Speaking of engines, when BMW
rolled out the 750iL with its V-12 engine, Mercedes was right behind them with their
S600. Turnabout is fair play considering that in 1956, BMW started producing carbon
copies of Mercedes then classic 1936 diesel.
There are some differences, however. While BMW is putting their chips behind
hydrogen fuel cells for future alternative energy vehicles, Mercedes is exploring

pretty much every other type of alternative fuel instead. Also, BMW is busy
developing a prototype V-16 for Rolls Royce. Mercedes is countering with plans for a
possible V-24 engine for Maybach.

Conclusion
In the end, Both these German giants produce some of the best
vehicles in the world. Both provide cutting edge technology
that puts them apart from the rest. And this comes along with
unmatched luxury and a very high status symbol for its owner.

But when these two are directly compared, Mercedes

slightly edges ahead of BMW. Mercedes usually innovate more
and come up with new features before any of its rivals and its
long history gives it a legendary status that cannot be matched
by any other car manufacturer. This is why most people prefer
owning a Mercedes over a BMW or an Audi which also comes in
the same segment.
Thus, I would like to end by saying that the afore
mentioned reasons are why Mercedes is better than BMW
