Introduction
The January 05 of 2015 was the anniversary of the poll that took place a year back
letting 153 members of parliament to win uncontested of the total 300 constituencies.
The poll was termed as a farcical one by the British weekly The Economist.
Within a day of the poll, governments and international organisations condemned the
way the election was carried out.
In a press statement, US State Department spokesperson Marie Harf said Washington

was "disappointed", as the results of the election "did not appear to credibly express the
will of the Bangladeshi people". 1
The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Kamalesh Sharma also decried the

"limited levels of participation and the low voter turnout". 2
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed the UN's sadness that the election was
not peaceful and all-inclusive. 3
Amid worldwide concerns to engage in dialogue in order to figure out the system under
which a credible, inclusive and transparent poll can be held as soon as possible, Awami
League government quashed off any possibility of dialogue in next five years. 4
Though the opposition camp made repeated calls to hold a dialogue for an inclusive and
participatory poll, the government lambasted every single call.
On the other hand, the government intensified its killing spree all around the nation.
According to Ain O Salish Kendra, a Bangladeshi Human Rights body, at least 128 people
were killed in crossfire and 88 disappeared across the country in 2014, mostly
opposition party members. 5
The human rights situation in Bangladesh was alarming in 2014, adding that the
incidents of crossfire have sharply been increased in the year. The incidents of
crossfire rose 80% comparing to 2013. 6
Some 147 people were killed in 664 incidents of political violence in 2014 while 8373
others received injuries. Some 24 people were killed in incidents of violence, centering
January 5 polls while 11 were killed during upazila elections. 7
In such an alarming situation, the leader of people Begum Khaleda Zia tabled seven
points proposal, demanding a fresh poll in order to reinstate the democracy which was
banished in the January 5 election of 2014. 8
Very shortly, Awami League leaders rejected the proposal. Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, joint
general secretary of the Awami League (AL), said that the ruling party has rejected the

seven proposals placed by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chief Khaleda Zia,
including holding of an early inclusive election. 9
After the rejection of the proposal by Awami League, BNP decide to hold a rally in the
capital to show the government that the people support their proposal and are eagerly
waiting to practice their right to suffrage which was robbed in daylight on January 5.
BNP asked for permission to hold rally in the capital to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police,
the authority to provide the permission.
Government reacted violently and cracked down on BNP leaders and activists ahead of
January 5 of 2015. A standing committee member and many other members of the
central committee of BNP were arrested within a week.
In addition the Dhaka Metropolitan Police banned all sort of meeting or rallies in capital
for indefinite period of time and imposed the section 144.
Begum Khaleda Zia in retaliation called for a nationwide blockade from January 06 for a
fresh mid-term election. The government reacted very harshly and cracked down on the
opposition since then.

All of them were opposition activists
who tried to rally in their area and
were gunned down either by law
enforcers or by the ruling party men.
According to the recent developments
on an average at least two people had
to die every single day since the
blockade begun.

The number of shootouts, gunfights, crossfire and encounters increased rapidly in

February. The number of opposition activists or supporters who had to die during the
incident stands 51 on February 09 of the total 95 deaths.
Human Rights Watch while analyzing Bangladesh crisis said, the governments tactics to
contain the violence echo previous violations including arbitrary arrests and killings,
and enforced disappearances.

Extrajudicial Killing in the name of

'Gunfight' and 'Revenge'
The people of Bangladesh wants the punishment of the perpetrators, who burned buses
and kills innocent passengers. The same applies to the opposition parties fighting for
the voting rights of the people. But police and RAB are killing innocent political activists
of the opposition parties rather than arrest those culprits. Most of the petrol bombing
and arson occurred in the presence of police, BGB and RAB. Despite orders to shoot on
sight, they remained silent or did not try to chase those culprits. Instead, intelligence
agencies have listed around 2,800 top-ranking leaders of BNP and Jamaat across the
country 10, arrested them or abducted them arbitrarily and killing them in cold blood in
the name of 'Gunfight' and 'Revenge'. Beside the police, RAB and BGB the ruling party
men are also killing political opposition leaders, activists and supporters regularly.

Rakib Munshi, a BNP student wing JCD leader, was gunned down in Natore, a northwestern district of Bangladesh. 11 Two ruling party men on a motorbike opened fire at
him while he was preparing for a rally on the Tebaria junction of the city. 12
Rakib was the Sports Secretary of Nawab Sirajuddaula Government College JCD wing
and a 2nd year student of BBA.

Raihan Hossain Rana, a BNP student wing JCD activist, was gunned down in Natore, a

A group of 5-6 cadres of ruling Awami League pounced on Siraj at Teen Rasta
intersection on Chhoigharia-Bora Shalua road around 5pm while he along with his two
companions were going towards Bora Shalua village in a motorcycle. As the trio tried to

member dead on the spot and his co-riders injured.

library affairs secretary of Laxmipur district unit JCD, the pro-BNP student body.
According to the family sources, Jisan was picked up and shot dead for his political
connections.

who was a fifth-semester student of law at a private university in the capital, used to

During the afternoon of Friday 6 February 2015, a group of ruling party Chhatra League
activists repeatedly stabbed a 19 year old female student, Sadia, and her mother at their
home in Jatrabari, Dhaka. 56 The activists had come seeking Sadias father and when
they couldnt find him they attacked Sadia and her mother instead. Sadias father is a
local leader of opposition party, Jamaat-e-Islami. Sadia later died at around 7pm local
time at Kakrail Islami Bank Hospital after being taken in critical condition.

Locals informed the police of a body left near a car workshop in Kalshi around 6:45am

Innocence
The activists of opposition parties in Bangladesh have interrupted vehicular movement

at various spots across the country since 5th of January 2015, when a movement and
blockade started against the current government of Bangladesh. But it is totally illogical
as well as unbelievable that they would make cruelties like bombing on the passenger
buses amid hugely police escorts. The way government has exerted wrath upon the
opposition activists by extrajudicial killing in the name of crossfire, it should be repaid
back to them only if the activists want to take revenge. This is basic psychological norm.
Then why they would attack on the innocent people? This is simple logic- if BNP-Jamat
can kill police protected innocent people, why they do not kill or try to kill their prime
enemies (i.e. Awami League leaders) in police protection? Thus, this will not be
insensible to gauge that Government itself is involved with such repeated attacks on
general people. They just want to kill people so that they can blame opposition parties
and therefore legitimate their extrajudicial killings.

At the moment Bangladesh is under "Totalitarian" rule

On 05 January 2014, present non-elected one party Awami League (Ruling party) government
of Bangladesh had staged a deceptive and controversial general election which was not
recognized by the democratic world. Since retaining power through a farcical election, the
Awami League (Ruling Party) government headed by Sheikh Hasina Wazed is conducting an
operation of annihilation/ extermination of political opponents in Bangladesh in a systematic
way. The acts of the illegal government resemble the classical totalitarianism where total
control over media, administration, law enforcing agencies and judiciary is firmly established.
The 20 party alliances has termed the day as "Democracy Killing Day".
On 03 January 2015, present unpopular government illegally confined BNP Chairperson and
former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Begum Khaleda Zia at her office by parking trucks laden
with sand and bricks outside the gates of her office compound with a view to hinder the
program. Since then she and her inmates are in confinement there in.
On 05 January 2015 when she was about to start for the pre-declared peaceful gathering from
her office, hundreds of police cordoned the office, APCs and water canons were lined up. Police
also padlocked the office gates and used illegal pepper spray inside the office compound. As a
result, Begum Khaleda Zia along with sixty of her political colleagues and office staffs suffered
serious illness for several days. Because of the poisonous substance it contains, the use of
pepper spray has been banned by the High Court of Bangladesh. Even then Government had
used it indiscriminately.
However, facing the unprecedented brutality by the Police and Awami League activists against
peaceful democratic event, BNP led 20-party alliance called for a country-wide peaceful
blockade of the highways, railways and waterways as a protest. On the contrary police, RAB
(Rapid Action Battalion) and combined task force ( combined with police, RAB, BGB, civil
administration) accompanied by armed Awami league activists continued to kill BNP led 20party alliance members around the country. As a result peace loving general citizen remained
highly sympathetic and supportive to the cause of BNP led 20-party alliance. Subsequently, to
defame the peaceful democratic activities of BNP led 20-party alliance, government backed
mysterious and clandestine perpetrators started killing innocent people by hurling petrol bombs
on passenger buses under the police protection and continued to stage deceptive blame game.
Meanwhile, all the Media of the country went under strict control of the government and failed to
question, why police could not stop or take any attempt to arrest the perpetrators when
the incidents took place while police were escorting the vehicles?
They (Media) also failed to question the authority, why BNP led 20-party alliance leaderssupporters were falsely accused, unlawfully arrested and shot dead in the name of
"Cross-Fire" after abduction by the law enforcing agencies or while he was in police
custody?
Some of the alarming oppressions against BNP led 20-party alliance leaders-supporters are:
a.
Around 700 (Seven Hundred) spurious cases have been lodged against over 18000
(Eighteen Thousand) 20-party alliance leaders which includes all central leaders. They even did
not spare BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakrul
Islam Alamgir, Vice Chairman of BNP and former Foreign Secretary Mr. Shamsher Mobin
Chowdhury, BNP Chairperson's adviser Samsuzzaman Dudu, Joint Secretary Md shajahan,
Joint Secretary and office Secretary Mr Ruhul kabir Rizvi.
b.
Former State Minister for Foreign Affairs and BNP Chairperson's adviser Mr. Reaz
Rahman was shot three times by government patronized assailants and his car was burnt, the
car of another Adviser Mr. Sabih Uddin Ahmed has been torched. Assailants also attacked the
resident of all foreign relation related committee members of BNP, i.e Dr Moin Khan (BNP
Standing Committee member), Mr Shafiq Rehman (Leading jurnalist of the country), Mr Abdul
Awal Minto (BNP Chairperson's adviser), Advocate Khondokar Mahbub Hossen (President of
Supreme court Bar association), Prof Amajuddin Ahmed (Ex Vice Chacellor, Dhaka University).

BNP central office was put under lock and key by the police and all the democratic
activities like meeting, peaceful procession etc are barred inside Dhaka since the election of
January 2014.
d.
Government illegally confined BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister of
Bangladesh Begum Khaleda Zia at her office from 03 January 2015. To our utter surprise they
even disconnected the electricity line, telephone line, internet connection, dish connection and
jammed mobile network. However, After 19 (Nineteen) hours electricity connection was restored
but the other facilities remained disconnected till today.
Media reports on government backed terrorist/subversive activities.

Present democratically unrecognized government is committing all possible human rights
violations that includes annihilation, extra-judicial killing, enforced disappearance, custodial
torture, arson and vandalization in the houses of the political opponents. They are deliberately
organizing so called "Cross-Fire" and hurling petrol bombs through its activists and trying to shift
the liability to the BNP led 20 party alliance. Here a question may arise, why should the
government organize throwing petrol bombs? The answer is simple, i.e,
The fascist government wants to show to the international community that BNP
led 20 party alliances are responsible for such atrocities and other violent activities.
Further more, they want to justify their extra-judicial killing (Cross-Fire) of political
opponents .
But, BNP led 20 party alliance had always emphasized peaceful means in their call for the total
movement. The alliance had never in the past and in the present advocated or pursued violent
means. Various publications and news in different media substantiate the aforesaid statement
that the petrol bombs are being used with the patronization of the government.

Juba League men released hours after

arrest with petrol bombs

The police on Wednesday set free two Awami Juba League activists a few
hours after the police arrested them with petrol bombs at Jagannathdighi of
Chauddagram upazila in Comilla.
Local people alleged that the police arrested the ruling Awami League-baked
youth organisations Jagnnath union unit president Manik its activist Babul in
Keskir crossing area at Jagannathdighi at about 10:00pm with petrol bombs
and later took them to Chauddagram police station.
The police, however, said that they recovered some petrol bombs from behind
Maniks house, not from his possession.
Miscreants might have kept the bombs behind Maniks house in a bid to
implicate him in the crime and that is why we have released them,
Chauddagram police station officer-in-charge Uttam Kumar Chakrabarti told
New Age on Thursday.
He said that the Juba League men were released on Wednesday evening.
At least seven people, including two women, were burnt alive and 26 others
sustained burn injuries in a firebomb attack on a bus on Dhaka-Chittagong
highway at Jagamohanpur of Chouddagram upazila on early Tuesday.

The detective branch of police arrested the son of a Awami Muktijodhdha
League leader at Sonar Bangla market of Madhabdi municipality in Narsingdi
and recovered five petrol bombs from him on Wednesday afternoon. The
arrested was identified as Md Masum, 22, son of Nuralapur union Awami
Muktijoddha League vice president Zehar Ali. Police, quoting local people,
said Masum was a miscreant. A case was filed with the Narsingdi sadar police
in this connection, police said.

Police detained local Awami League leaders nephew Azimuddin (27) from his house
with 7 petrol bomb kept beside the Feni telephone exchange house.
Arrested Azim, is the nephew of Feni local Awami League Secretary General Abdul
Karim and son of Farid Ahmed.
He was detained on a special raid led by police prompted by an anonymous tipoff. Police
informed that they recovered 7 petrol bomb, 1cocktail bomb and local arms based on the
seized information. Area (Zila) police Superintendent Rezaul went to the location to
monitor the search operation.

False Flags
On February 03, 2015 petrol bomb was hurled into a bus carrying passengers from
Coxs Bazar to Dhaka on the Chittagong highway at Chauddagram of Comilla.
It was the deadliest attack since the blockade begun on January 06. Seven killed on the
spot, one day later the toll was raised to eight.
The bus that came under attack was escorted by police. Police claimed that some
miscreants hurled the bomb all on a sudden and fled the scene before police could react.
In a raid conducted in the area after the attack took place, police arrested the
ruling Awami League-baked youth organisations Jagnnath union unit
president Manik its activist Babul in Keskir crossing area at Jagannathdighi at
about 10:00pm with petrol bombs and later took them to Chauddagram
police station. 108
Surprisingly, the police who previously failed to provide necessary security to

the passengers and could not hold the arsonists amid a shoot at sight order set
free the Awami League men hours after the arrest. Though they were caught red
handed with petrol bombs, police refused to launch any investigation regarding
the matter. 109
This incident made it clear that the attack on Comilla bus was nothing but a false
flag operation conducted by local Awami League men maintaining a liaison with
local police.
However, this is not the only incident of false flag during the blockade. Many other
arrests and suspicious attacks in front of police raise questions about who are behind
these attacks actually.
Case-1
Police recovered 10 abandoned petrol bombs from CDS Colony in Chittagong's Agrabad
area around 6:30am on February 08. Acting on a tip off, police recovered seven petrol
bombs from behind a club while three others were recovered from a toilet of an
abandoned building in the colony. 110
The club house was traced with the help of Google Street View. The street view showed
that the club house is used as the office of local Awami League.

Police arrested a cadre of Awami League with four bombs at Marufdoha village in
Jibonnagar upazila of Chuadanga district on February 04. The arrestee, Mizanur
Rahman, 34, is a cadre of Awami League's youth wing Juba League of the area. 112

Police helped a bomber to flee the scene in Panthapath of capital Dhaka on February 01.
The bomber identified as Jasim of the area was caught red handed by some pedestrians
while throwing a bomb. But police all on a sudden came to rescue the bomber and
helped him to flee. 114
Case-5
The detective branch of police arrested the son of an Awami Muktijodhdha League

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained six persons with petrol bombs and sharp
weapons in their possession from a slum at Tiger Pass area of the port city in a
crackdown at around 2:00am on February 02. 116 Among the detainees Md Munna, 33, of
Chandpur is the brother of deceased Juba League leader Murad who died last year.
Munna claimed himself a Juba League activist. 117
Case-7
In the capital police arrested another youth from a private clinic, who was injured while
allegedly making a bomb. Rahmat Ullah, 22, is from Rupganj in Naraynganj. He and his
three associates were injured while making bomb in the office of local Awami League
leader Shahin On February 01. All of them are Awami League student wing men. 118

Case-8
In a surprising development, the Rajshahi University Students League, the Awami
League backed student body in their official Facebook page confessed that the events
regarding petrol bombs in Rajshahi are actually organized by the Awami League men.
They do it to blame the BNP men in Rajshahi and to send them behind bar. 119
Case-9
On January 23, a bus in Jatrabari was set fire around 9pm. Police car with a number of
police personnel around it was waiting in only 10-12 yards of the bus that came under
attack. Police did not react when the attack took place and let the bombers flee. 120
Case-2
In Rangpur, on January 14, petrol bomb was hurled into a bus carrying passengers to
Dhaka while it was being escorted by BGB. BGB men failed to catch the arsonists and
later cracked down on the opposition activists.
In a very shocking incident on the afternoon of January 15, plainclothes police men and
officers from the Rapid Action Battalion, demolished the house of opposition men and
picked up the brother of an opposition activist Al-Amin Kabir from his home and then
returned to the same house a couple of hours later and picked up Kabirs wife, and
another woman alleging that they were involved in that attack. 121
Moreover, according to news report published in a Bengali daily edited by a former

Awami League leader from Rajshahi University on January 06, the local Awami League
leaders claimed that the bombers arrested with petrol bombs are involved in Awami
League politics. In Awami Leagues official pad they certified the identity of
bombers as their activists and asked the court to consider the bail of those
bombers. 122

Thinking outside the Box
It is no wonder that the Awami League is behind many of the atrocities and violence in
Bangladesh since January 05. They do it intentionally to legitimize their oppression over
the opposition men.
They believe, conducting such false flag operations will help them to make the
international human rights body believe that killing opposition men extra judicially or
abduct them en masse are done to curb terrorism.
In support of this, the study can present a statement of the State Minister for Home
Affairs, Asaduzzaman Khan. Asaduzzaman Khan on February 08 said,
Whenever it is necessary to contain terrorists, the police go into action to
nab them and gunfights between law enforcers and terrorists
occurYou all know what usually happens in a gunfight. 123
Moreover, MayeenUddin Khan Badal, executive president of JatiyaSamajtantrik Dal, a

component of the ruling Awami League-led 14-party alliance, suggested the police shoot
BNP activists for maintaining law and order. He said,
Police should shoot in their (opposition men) chests, if required. 124
After getting the green signal from party high command, Border Guard Bangladesh
(BGB) decided to use lethal force, if necessary, on so called miscreants as the
countrywide blockade continued. 125
Social Welfare Minister Syed Mohsin Ali in Dhaka on Jan 20 said,
Arsonists and saboteurs will be shot on sight. We are going to decide

on giving orders to shoot [arsonists] on sight as in wartime. 126
Dhaka range Deputy Inspector General SM Mahfujul Haque Nuruzzaman said,
Shoot them (opposition men) and their family members should also
be annihilated.
In addition, the illegal Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said,
Khaleda Zia will be tried in the same way a killer is tried. 127
It is quite easy to predict one of the most significant motives behind the attacks
analyzing Sheikh Hasinas threat to try Begum Khaleda Zia. Surprisingly, Sheikh Hasinas
threat was followed by a deadly attack on a bus in capital only 10 yards before a police
van. Later, the police enlisted the name of Begum Zia as the instigator of the attack.

Moreover, when the attack took place Begum Zia was in deep shock due to her sons
death.
Another two things by which the government ridiculed itself are holding BNP chief
Begum Khaleda Zia responsible for the arson attacks, and the claim from the
government side that the opposition men attacked the vehicles being escorted by police.
First of all, Begum Khaleda Zia who was confined in her office since January 03 has been
kept in incommunicado since January 30. Almost all the extensive attacks on vehicles
across the country took place in between January 31 to February 09 including the
Comilla, Gaibandha and Barisal arson.
How a woman who is not allowed to meet any of her leaders, who cannot
communicate with the leaders of her party, whose phone is being tapped by
government, can direct those attacks on the vehicles?
If BNP men can attack the public vehicles being escorted by police, why they do
not attack the Awami Leaders cars?
The question is tabled. Who is going to answer them? However, the answers of these
questions may dig out many untold stories.

Way Forward
The root of ongoing violence is merely not the confinement of the former Premier
Begum Khaleda Zia and the banned protest.
To analyze the recent turmoil in Bangladesh, one should go to the third week of
November, 2013. When the then Premier Sheikh Hasina decided to form a poll time
government to oversee the January 5 poll, one of the prominent Bangladesh daily in
their November 18 edition wrote, BNP left with agitation only. 128 BNP, who decided to
boycott the January 5 election, was left with no options but to take the streets and resist
the election that day.
But after the election took place on January 5, which was termed as a farce by The
Economist, the opposition men apparently went to ground. The largest opposition
alliance refrained itself from further agitation and plead for a fresh election as soon as
possible.
Opposition alliance decision of not to disturb the government was largely appreciated
and it was expected that a fresh midterm election may took place within a year as the
Awami League publicly termed the last election a constitutional requirement. 129
But the situation worsened in 2014, especially for the opposition men amid their pulling
out of themselves from violent protests. From December 25 to January 27, in almost one
month, 65 opposition activists were either killed or disappeared. At the year end,
according to Ain O Salish Kendra, 128 crossfires took place in Bangladesh which is 80%
higher than the last year. Along with a total of 88 incidents of disappearances and 147
deaths due to 664 incidents of political violence, more than 200 opposition activists lost
their life in 2014.
Apart from the incidents of last year, on the anniversary of the January 5 election four
were killed across the country. Another two died on the second day of the blockade in
Noakhali. All of them were opposition activists who tried to rally in their area and were
gunned down either by law enforcers or by the ruling party men. The government held
no one responsible for these killings and totally overlooked the deaths.
The frequent rights abuses and the tendencies to ignore them by the government in
Bangladesh played its role and paved the way for violence. The only way to stop this
violence is to ensure a midterm as early as possible under a neutral caretaker
government system.
