Well Intervention
Academy
combining practical and theoretical
training in real-life surroundings

At our massive training facility in Stavanger, Aker

Well Service gives future generations of offshore
technicians first-hand experience in critical well
intervention activities.
Up until recently, it was common practice for oil
companies to send new personnel onboard a
production platform to undergo on-the-job training.
Today; the number of the worlds production sites
is soaring, along with production costs and the
certificate requirements to crews. While onboard
training is increasingly considered too costly,
risky and time consuming, the hands-on practical
training that it provided is as important as ever.
Aker Solutions Well Intervention Academy is located
at Forus; the heart of Norways petroleum industry.
The centre consists of complete testing and
training facilities needed to get as close to real
offshore conditions as possible. While offering
practical and theoretical training in todays and
tomorrows well intervention techniques, the
facilities also enable Aker Well Service and our
clients to test the performance of well intervention
equipment; in existing and in new applications.

HSE incidents. Intensive, realistic training situations

provide the best opportunity to improve HSE performance and employees judgement in critical situations. As HSE performance is top priority for Aker
Well Service and our customers, we have made
HSE training a focus area in the academy. All
theoretical and practical training includes HSE
procedures and best practice review as an
integrated part of the course.
The Well Intervention Academy offers over 20
different courses on a range of well intervention,
HSE and certificate based topics. In cooperation
with our satellite centre, we offer IWCF certification for both Well Intervention and Rotary Drilling
in Stavanger and Bergen. Our courses are offered
not only to Aker Solutions employees, but also to
our customers. Our courses range from introductory courses to highly technical courses in
operation and maintenance of complex tools
and services.
Testing
The testing facilities at the Well Intervention
Academy can test wireline tractors and wireline
tractor applications, wireline surface equipment,
down-hole equipment, logging equipment and
riserless well intervention equipment.

Testing and development

Being able to test new technology in controlled
surroundings is a huge advantage in preference to
testing in an offshore well; you have more control
and overview over the situation. You eliminate the
risk of misruns and loss of production; there are
reduced HSE hazards; and it will minimize
down-time by pinpointing faults at an early stage.
Facilities
The Aker Solutions Well Intervention Academy
features new and state-of-the-art technology
to prepare our well intervention technicians for the
future operating environment. The centre offers
highly modern and practical facilities, with
everything situated within the perimeter of the
base. In addition to classrooms, canteen, workshop and showroom; the centre also includes
a 28 m high skid-able well intervention tower,

We employ direct-electric winches, as these will

increasingly take over for diesel and electric/
hydraulic-driven. The academys next generation
control systems allows training in wireline, logging
and tractor control, as well as operations, and
integrated control of all three at once.
Operational performance is our top key
performance indicator, and we strive to
achieve world class performance.

The rig
Our rig is equipped with a 30 ton main winch and
two 5 tons tuggers. This allows us to re-complete
the 390 meter well and this makes it possible to
run completions for pre-test etc. before installation
offshore.
Our wells can also be used for testing and
development of downhole tools such as plugs,
logging tools, wireline tools, work over units,
coiled tubing, tractors and tractor applications.
The rig can skid to both wells. Internet connection
is available in the control room. Work lights allow
24 hrs operations.
Executed tests in the rig:
Stack-up test. Pre-running completion BHA
before installed offshore.
Packer test. Set and pressure test packer
in 13 3/8 ran on 9 5/8.
Sidepocket test. Install/retrieve gas lift valve
in 60 deg angle with varying orientation.
Looging tool test. Test of prototype logging tool.
Wireline pressure control equipment test.
Qualification test after modification.
Wireline pressure control equipment test.
Test of new deployment equipment.
Tractor application tests. Several pre-tests of
tractor applications to confirm correct set up.

The loop

Horizontal test well

In addition to the rig we have a 50 meter long built
over test hall, the loop. This is mostly used for
horizontal testing and development of new tractor
applications. By using two overhead cranes it is
easy to change out and make up different test
assemblies. Test assemblies can be pressurised
during the tests.
Executed tests in the loop:
Set and retrieve lock by use of tractor
and stroker.
Open sliding sleeve by use of hydraulic
shifting tool, tractor and stroker.
Setting and retrieving of main and lateral diverter
by use of tractor, tractor jar and stroker.
Kick over tool tests
Milling tests
Sandcatcher tests
Turbulence test. Verifying if turbulence would
occur after installing scale basket in tubing.
Facts about the loop:
50 meters
2 overhead cranes

The wells
The 390 meter well can be re-completed on
clients request. Circulation is possible and
pressure up to 345 bar.
The 40 meter well is completed with a 15 ID
casing. This can be used for testing of pressure
control equipment, different wireline equipment
e.g. wireline masts.

Course
philosophy
One of Aker Well Services core values is
Health, Safety and Environment (HSE). All our
procedures and guidelines are modeled with
HSE in focus and are implemented throughout
our organization; offshore as well as onshore
including the Well Intervention Academy (WIA).
We can offer a great variety of well intervention
courses; ranging from introduction to the oil &
gas industry to more specific areas as wireline
operations, basic completion courses as well
as courses in wireline tractor and cased hole
logging. In addition, AWS is certified to offer
IWCF courses and certification (pressure
control) in both drilling and well intervention
which we arrange on a regular basis.
Our main philosophy is hands on training,
meaning all our courses combine theory with
practical demonstration of surface equipment
and downhole tools. All of the equipment at
WIA is identical with equipment utilized in
offshore operations.
Integrated Operations (IO) is a field that
is getting more and more attention and
this will also be a focus area in the years
to come. IO is one of our focus areas, and
AWS is a great contributor in the development
of new technology and standards as well as
finding alternative solutions to perform well
interventions.

WIA is equipped with state-of-the-art

equipment such as fully electrical wireline
winches which can be operated from remote
locations, live data transfer allowing monitoring
of offshore operations and more.
Course types:
We separate our courses into three groups:
Pressure control, introductory and common
courses. Our IWCF pressure control courses are
fulfilled with a certifying IWCF exam. Our introductory courses require no previous knowledge.
Our common courses are intended for personnel
with some experience. These recommended
requirements are thoroughly described in the
course descriptions in this catalogue. In addition
to the courses in the course catalogue, we are
working continuously to improve our range of
courses. We can also make adjusted courses
custom made for our customers needs. All our
courses are constantly updated and improved.
The training conducted at AWS is certified to ISO
9001 and ISO 14001 standard. Our Well
Intervention Academy has also been audited by
the International Well Control Forum (IWCF) and
is certified to issue IWCF certificates in both
rotary drilling and well intervention.

13

Satellite
centre
To satisfy our customers needs, Well Intervention
Academy has opened a satellite centre in the
Bergen area. The centre is located at Kokstad,
only few minutes away from Flesland airport.
The facilities include two spacious classrooms
and a dedicated room for one of our drilling
simulators. Regular IWCF pressure control courses
in both drilling and well intervention services are
arranged here.
The courses offered in our Bergen facility includes:
IWCF Rotary Drilling 5 days
IWCF Rotary Drilling Refresher 3 days
IWCF Well Intervention Combined 4 days
IWCF Well Intervention Combined Refresher 3 days
IWCF Well Intervention Wireline 3 days
IWCF Well Intervention Wireline Refresher 2 days
Please refer to the course overview later in this
catalogue to see a specific list of the topics
included in these courses.
The opportunity to undertake IWCF courses and
exams also in the Bergen area is very much
appreciated among our customers, and we would
like to welcome you as well!
