Did you know there is an extremely big fossil in Villa de Leyva, Colombia?
Read the following magazine article about this Colombian beautiful town.
Then, answer questions 1 to 11.

A majestic town in Colombia

There is a majestic town in the Colombian Andean region; its an extremely beautiful
town called Villa de Leyva and it is located in the Department of Boyac. This
town has a population of about 9600 people. Villa de Leyva is considered one of the
finest colonial villages of Colombia; it was declared as a National Monument on
December 17th, 1954 in order to preserve its colonial architecture. The first Spaniard
conqueror to find the town on June 12, 1572 was Hernn Suarez de Villalobos, who
gave Villa de Leyva its name to honor Andrs Daz Venero de Leyva, who was the first
president of the New Kingdom of Granada by that time. Villa de Leyva is located in a
high altitude valley at 2144 meters where there are abundant fossils from the Mesozoic
and the Cretaceous eras. This colonial town is famous all over the world because there
are many important fossils in its geographical area. Lets check a little bit about them.
The Plesiosaurus
The Plesiosaurus is around 115 million years old; it was found in 1945. Nowadays, it is
at the Colombias National Geological museum.
The Ichthyosaur

Another important fossil found in Villa de Leyva is The Ichthyosaur; it was part of the
giant group of fish that inhabited this area around 115 million years ago.
Kronosaurus
The Kronosaurus was a marine reptile that lived around 115 million years ago; it had
a long head, a short neck, four flippers that worked as its hands and legs to move
through water, and a relatively short tail. The Kronosaurus was carnivorous, which
means that it used to eat meat, which is probably why it had many long teeth. It is
estimated that the Kronosaurus was around 9 to 10 meters long. A person from
Moniquirs rural area, a town close to Villa de Leyva, found an enormous rock on the
land of his farm, which he later recognized as a possible fossil. After that, archeologists
excavated the area and discovered a complete Kronosaurus skeleton, one of the best
preserved fossils in Colombia. Thus, Oliver Hampe, a German paleontologist, described
this specimen in 1992 as a second species called K. boyacensis. The people of Villa de
Leyva built a museum called El Fsil, the word for Fossil in Spanish, around the area
where the skeleton was excavated, and where the skeleton of the K. boyacensis is
preserved. It is very important because it is one of the biggest fossils of this species, so
this museum is one of the most visited places in Villa de Leyva.
