Roadside birth

Two Western Water staff members

more accustomed to delivering drinking water helped with a surprise delivery of a baby on Friday February 6.
Baby Angus was safely delivered on
the side of the road outside Merrimu
Water Filtration Plant after parents
Brooke and Ben pulled over at around
7.30am, realising they were not going to
make it to the hospital.
The Sunbury couple were relieved that
Wester Waters water treatment team

member Colin Clarke was there to call

an ambulance, with water quality officer Fiona Robertson, from Ballan, arriving shortly afterwards.
While Colin relayed instructions from
triple-0, Fiona helped make Brooke
slightly more comfortable, while Ben
delivered the baby, wrapping him in
towels from the back of the car.
The ambulance arrived soon afterwards and transported the trio to Bacchus Marsh Hospital.

Dad Ben, speaking from the hospital

later that day, said mother and baby
were doing well.
Shes fine, the babys fine it worked
out well, he said.
We are so grateful Colin and Fiona
were there.
Fiona said it was a fantastic
experience.
The whole saga was 15 minutes long,
but it felt like an hour time stood
still, Fiona said.

Spray drift is unnecessary

Farmers using herbicides to

control weeds are urged to
be vigilant in managing the
risk of spray drift.
The Department of Environment, Land, Water and
Planning (DELWP) Chemical Standards Officer, Felicity Collins said vineyards, tomatoes, and other broadleaf
crops are very susceptible

to spray drift damage from

herbicides.
Even a very small amount
of herbicide drift can have a
serious impact on susceptible crops, Ms Collins said.
The spray operator should
check for nearby susceptible
crops and put strategies in
place to ensure spray doesnt

It is also good practice to
speak with your neighbour
about their enterprise and
implement protective measures together to help avoid
the risk of damage, Ms Collins said.

Hands up who wants

to be a volunteer?
ARE you a volunteer in
Moorabool and, if not,
would you like to volunteer?
These are some of the questions being asked by Moorabool Shire Council to help
develop a strategy to support volunteering across the
community.
Council wants to hear from
people who put up their
hands to volunteer for local
organisations and also from
people who would like to

volunteer but dont know

where to start or find it too
difficult because of time,
travel or other factors.

Mayor Paul Tatchell said

volunteering is critical to
ensuring a healthy and connected community.

It provides benefits to not

only organisations engaging
volunteers, but also those
who are making a contribution to their community.

In 2011 more than one-fifth

of the Moorabool Shire population reported doing some
form of voluntary work.
People can pick up a survey
from council offices or attend a community forum on
February 24, 2pm 3.30pm
at Lerderderg Library in
Bacchus Marsh. The survey
closes on March 6.

FOODWORKS in Bacchus Marsh will usher

and firecrackers on Friday, February 27.
Commencing at 11am, Foodworks owner
Alex Ng said they would host a traditional

New Society in Melbourne to celebrate the
Year of the Goat.
Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce
chairman Wayne Tseng said the Year of the
Goat was traditionally considered a less
fortunate time compared to other Chinese

Zodiac signs.
People are advised to consolidate their
affairs, review the medium and long term
plans and be cautious in everything we do,
Mr Tseng said.

Hall funds fall through cracks

MONEY needed to repair Blackwood Hall
has fallen through the cracks.
Blackwood Crown Reserve Committee of
Management president Brian Moore said the
hall was in an emergency stage of disrepair with broken and sinking floorboards,
dangerous gaps and rotted stumps.
He said last year the committee appealed
to Regional Development Victoria (RDV) for
funding to repair the hall and was told they
were eligible for 3 to 1 funding whereby
the committee would raise $15,000 and the
State Government would contribute $45,000.
We needed roughly $60,000 for two items:
a 110,000 litre water tank and a new hall
floor, Mr Moore said.
I was contacted by RDV on (February 3)
and was told there was no funding and there
wouldnt be a review until July, and maybe
still no money after that. Money for repairs
was there until the election.
Its the only facility for us in Blackwood.
Senior citizens meet there every week. If you
move people out thats going to be the end of
anything getting done.
We have got to get some help off somebody.
Were in a predicament. We need somebody
to take notice of this. Its got to an emergency
stage now.
Moorabool Shire councillor Pat Toohey said:
Its very disappointing no funding has been
forthcoming from the owners of the hall. It is
a Crown-owned facility which is a responsibility of State Government.
There shouldnt be the pressure or responsibility of raising funds for safety issues on
five or six volunteers. Its very poor form, Cr
Toohey said.
My understanding is the (State) govern-

ment has cut funding to all programs at the

moment. People who volunteer and serve on
committees are left high and dry by a government that doesnt care about facilities that
theyre responsible for.
There are so many user groups that use
that hall on a daily and weekly basis including Moorabool Shire. We use it for our mobile library service and council meetings.
Cr Toohey said Moorabool Shire was looking at what funding options it had to assist
the Blackwood community.
In our budget we give the committee
around $4,000 annually for upkeep of the
hall. Moorabool Shire also insures Blackwood Hall. Were the only support they get.
We do everything to assist the community,
DEPI (Department of Environment and Primary Industries) do nothing, he said.
Theres a duty of care for the State Government and the minister who oversees DEPI to
make sure these facilities receive emergency
funding for what are significant maintenance issues.
If they dont want to take responsibility
then hand it over to the people for $1. Step
up to the plate or step away from the plate.
He said Moorabool Shire wasnt backing
away from this. Were looking at options
where we could give a portion of funds
needed, eg. $15,000, that could be redirected
if other funds are found.
A State Government regional development
representative said she was advised by RDV
that they had a verbal conversation with
the Blackwood Hall committee last year to
talk about potential projects and funding,
however the committee didnt apply for any
funding last year.

A Department of Economic Development

spokesperson said: Regional Development
Victoria has been working with the Blackwood Hall Committee of Management for
the last six months.
We would anticipate that the project will
be eligible for support through
the Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund,
that will commence from 1 July
2015, he said.
Regional Development Victoria funding
programs generally require a contribution
from the applicant or from other sources.
RDV staff have been working with the committee to identify other potential sources of
funds to support the project, which we understand is in the vicinity of $70,000.

Tighter scrutiny
on foreign
investment
welcomed
A MOORABOOL farmer
thinks the Federal Governments increasing scrutiny of
foreign investment in Australian agriculture is a step
in the right direction.
Last week the government
announced it would reduce
the screening threshold of
foreign purchases by the
Foreign Investment Review
Board from $252 million to
$15 million from March 1
and from July 1 it will establish a register of foreign
ownership of agricultural
land.
Moorabool Rural Advisory
Committee member and
Balliang East farmer, Chris
Sharkey, said the register
might give local farmers
leverage to say we cant
compete with the prices
being paid by foreign investors and make farmers think
twice about selling to foreign investors.
If we cant measure it then
we cant manage it, Mr
Sharkey said.
Nationals senator for Victoria Bridget McKenzie said
the changes were proposed
by the Nationals, after consultation with regional communities, and delivered by
the Coalition Government.
While we welcome any investment that promotes jobs
and investment, there has
been widespread concern
from regional communities
right across Victoria about
foreign companies buying

up our prime agricultural

land, Senator McKenzie
said.
It is important that government has oversight to ensure
purchases are in the national
interest. Previously purchases of agricultural land could
only be reviewed once purchases were more than $252
million.
Regional
communities
across Victoria understand
that this provided a free pass
to overseas interests wanting
to buy up our agricultural
land, with few or any purchases of our agricultural
land coming anywhere near
$252 million.
Our changes are not about
shutting the door on overseas purchases of our agricultural land, its simply
about putting the frameworks in place to ensure that
if foreign interests want to
purchase our land then they
must first show that it will
benefit us all.

title bout looms

MADDINGLEY boxer Dylan Mallia

was shortlisted for the prestigious
Wunhym Award last week.
The award presented by the Ballarat Sportsmens Club to the junior
sportsperson of the year was won
by long-jumper Ashlea Bylsma, but
Mallia said it was an honour to be
one of four athletes shortlisted for
the trophy.
The 6ft 4inch southpaw only began competing in amateur boxing
tournaments in February last year
and has racked up eight wins from
eight fights, including the Victorian
Golden Gloves light heavyweight title in March and Australian Golden
Gloves heavyweight title in August.
Despite missing out on competing
in the Victorian championships in
November due to a fractured thumb,
the 16-year-old was selected to represent Victoria in the Australian
Light Heavyweight amateur title this
April.
He said the bout in April would also
be a trial for the Youth Commonwealth Games in September.
I had surgery on my thumb in November but returned to full training
at the end of January, he said.
Mallia trains with Ballarat-based
coach Ian Fear.
He said a win in April didnt mean
he would automatically go to the
Youth Commonwealth Games. It all
depends on my performance.

Family camp has a vision to educate

By Kate Taylor
Learning how to support a
child with a vision impairment can be a tricky task
but going on a giant flying
fox makes the experience
fun.
Guide Dogs Victoria held its
first ever family camp at the
Lake Dewar YMCA camp in
Myrniong last month, with
41 members of nine families
attending the event.
The camp educated the parents and siblings of children
with vision impairments
on the struggles they face
with everyday life, how to
support them - particularly
with learning - and also how
to support each other as a
family.
Over the duration of
the camp, families got the
chance to interact and begin
to provide each other with
a solid support network of
friends in a similar situation, said event spokesperson Sarah Robertson.
Most importantly, the

camp was about having

fun and learning together
families participated in
orienteering, blind soccer,
raft building, geocoaching,
and had the opportunity to
go on the giant flying fox at
the camp.
Having the opportunity
to play with other vision impaired children in a fun and
friendly environment gives
the children a big confidence
boost and allows them to interact with others who face
the same challenges as they
do.
Over the three days, families had the opportunity
for all members to gain a
greater understanding of
Orientation and Mobility (O&M) and how to support their childs learning
at home, with parents and
siblings also participating
in O&M sessions to gain a
greater understanding of
the complexities of travel
with a vision impairment as
well as sessions aimed to develop their own support net-

works with others in similar

circumstances.
This program addresses
the complexities of living
with a vision impairment
and the impact of disability on a family as a whole.
It provided the opportunity
for families to gain a greater
awareness and appreciation for the challenges of
navigating the environment
with a vision impairment
and develop their ability to
support orientation and mobility training in the home,
Ms Robertson said.
Many siblings of a student
with a disability have difficulty understanding the experiences of their sibling and
can have conflicting emotional responses to the level
of support and intervention
they receive. By meeting others in similar circumstances
we aim to allow siblings the
opportunity to develop their
own support network and
share their experiences with
people who understand
their home life.

Court in action
By Jessica Howard
A 23-year-old Moorabool
resident has received a
12-month community corrections order, after obtaining over $3,000 worth of
petrol by deception.

Over a one-month period in

2013, Steven Stark attended
the Foodworks Fuel service
station in Main Street, Bacchus Marsh, where he attained $3118 worth of petrol
through a local motocross
clubs fuel account.
Mr Stark was not authorised to use the clubs account
and in March 2014 the president was contacted in order
for the account to be revised.
The club contacted Mr Stark
in order to discuss the situation, however after denying
using the account, the matter was taken to the police.
Accompanied by his father
in the Bacchus Marsh Mag-

istrates Court on Friday, Mr

Stark pleaded guilty to one
charge of obtaining property by deception. It was said
that his father had paid back
the motocross club in full,
resulting in Mr Stark receiving a without conviction fine
of $500 and a 12-month community corrections order.

Meanwhile, a 21-year-old
said he has no recollection
of causing over $1000 worth
of damage to the Bacchus
Marsh Village Shopping
Centre parents room, the
court heard.
On the evening of Monday,
September 22, a cleaner attended the room to find a
smashed mirror, and damage to a stainless steel bin
and door. The police were
contacted and CCTV footage
was downloaded, where the

culprit was identified as Bacchus Marsh resident, Jackson Shields.

The accused was immediately arrested and taken to

the Bacchus Marsh Police
Station. Mr Shields attended
the Magistrates Court on
Friday, where he pleaded
guilty to one count of criminal damage and public
drunkenness. He received
a 12-month community
corrections order and was
asked to pay restitution to a
total of $1375.

Whilst a number of citizens

failed to appear in court,
over $2000 worth of combined fines were issued in
regards to driving offences
including speeding, driving
whilst suspended and alcohol related charges.

Councillors are being told

to mind their ps and qs, and
play nicely online.
A new social media policy is
currently being considered
by Moorabool Shire Councillors for adoption at next
months council meeting.
It is designed to guide
authorised users of social
media on appropriate use
and protect the organisation
from potential misuse or
harm arising from communication via social media.
The policy outlines requirements for compliance with
confidentiality, governance,
legal, privacy and regulatory parameters when using social media to conduct
Council business.
While it applies to all online
digital spaces collectively
referred to as social media
where people may comment,
contribute, create, forward,
post, upload and share content, it does not apply during
personal online use unless
that use is on behalf of or in
association with council, or
reference is made to council
in any way.
Former Moorabool Mayor
Pat Griffin famously came
under fire for calling ratepayers nuff nuffs and dropkick online in 2011, shortly
after having to deny that he
updated his Facebook status
during a council meeting.
If adopted, the policy will
undergo a six-month trial.
East Ward Councillor Allan Comrie said it is the way

forward.
It looks to be the way that
modern society has got to go
to get all our messages out to
the public, and for them to
get in touch with us, weve
got to keep up with the
times.
But will councillors be able
to stick to the policy?
Thats something were
going to find out, we have
argy-bargy with ratepayers over different ideas at
council meetings and in the
street, and this is just another form of communication with them. Weve got
to be smart enough to learn
to handle that kind of argybargy and not get into serious argument or debate.
East Ward Councillor Tonia
Dudzik expects that councillors will follow the policy.
Like any policy there is an
expectation that staff and
Councillors will follow it.
This policy does not prohibit
staff and Councillors using
social media instead it introduces some boundaries.
Mayor Tatchell agreed.
Its like using an M16, its
a really effective weapon of
communication but youve
got to know how to use it,
and youve got to have a reason to use it, otherwise itll
end in tears.
The policy helps us contain what is a very loose medium; I think the councillors
will be able to stick to it.
Cr Spain said that he is not
on Facebook or Twitter much
but that the policy can help
councillors and council staff

make use of a very powerful communication tool and

not fall into some of the traps
and dangers that are out
there.
It makes sense, theres a
whole process on appropriate responses to social media. We just need to take it
easy, take your time, check
out what the policy says and
stick to facts - some of it is
common sense, but common
sense doesnt always apply
in the social media world.
We recognise the risks - its
sort of like email on steroids,
sometimes we can insult
people unintentionally on
email because the written
word doesnt contain all the
facial expressions and inflections of a conversation and
once you press the enter button, its out there. The language should be appropriate
to council.
West Ward Councillor Tom
Sullivan said that the policy
is designed not to restrict interaction online, but to guide
it, saying it is necessary.
The reality is policies are
there to protect everybody,
to protect people and to
protect the organisation because fundamentally you
wouldnt want any risks to
the reputation of the organisation and I think thats well
understood.
East Ward Councillor David
Edwards agreed.
Technologies change fast
and we need policies that
allow council to take advantage of new technologies but
remain professional.

Environmental Opinion

with Tom Kingston

The future is a hot topic

I asked the question last
week; in the light of how we
are able to face some disturbing actions of our forebears
from the recent past, such
as the many acts of genocide
and war crimes, are we able
to face the pretty shocking
future as predicted by our
scientists? Can we turn our
minds to it? And can we
therefore act to prevent it?
For following shocking picture I am indebted to Mark
Lynas, Six Degrees. Our
Future on a Hotter Planet
(Harper Perennial London
2008). What would the world
look like as it gets warmer?
Last week I began with 2
degrees. 2 the only figure
the world has agreed on
about climate change. So far
we have raised the tempera-

ture 0.8 degrees and that

has caused far more damage
than any scientist expected
and the oceans are 30% more
acidic. A leading authority
on hurricanes writes, Any
number above 1 degree
involves a gamble. Or as
Thomas Lovejoy, the World
Banks chief environmental
advisor put it, If were seeing what we are seeing today
at 0.8 degrees, 2 degrees is
simply too much.
With a 2 degree rise Europe will experience more
and more of the heat waves
that it experienced in 2003
when over 30,000 people
died. This is not to mention
the loss of crops etc. during
this heatwave. It will mean
that Mediterraneans will
look to travel north during

summer to escape the heat.

The Greenland ice cap contains enough water to raise
the level of the oceans by 7
metres. Under a 2 degree
rise this massive amount of
ice will continue to melt and
while this may happen slowly there is some disagreement amongst the science
community as to how slowly
and at what point the mass
of ice slips into the ocean.
The Polar Bear will almost
certainly become extinct.
With the 2 degree rise the
monsoons in India will be
more severe and while they
will provide more water it
will be in stronger bursts
creating major flooding and
as the glaciers disappear the
waters needed for crops during the dry summers will no

longer be there. A 2 degree

rise will also affect food crop
growth in most countries especially Africa, and China.
Needless to say Australia
will be one of the most affected countries as the driest
continent on earth becomes
even drier, except for the occasional floods.
One of the key areas affected by the 2 degree rise is the
area of biodiversity and the
living systems of the planet.
Bio systems can adapt to
changes but this takes time
and when they have adapted
in the past it is because the
rate of change has been slow.
The current rate of change is
far faster than anything in
the history of the earth and
all the various ecosystems
we rely on for our wellbeing

are being severely threatened by the rapid change

and they just might not be
able to survive.
****
What would a 3 degree rise
in temperature look like for
our world? With a 3 degree
rise there will be little left of
the Kalahari in Africa but
violently blowing sand. This
will spread to Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zimbabwe
and Zambia so that by 2070
these countries and many
like them will be drowning
in sand. With a 3 degree rise,
one likely outcome, although
not all scientists agree on
this, is a semi-permanent
El Nino weather pattern.
It would also mean drier
winters for Europe, massive

floods and mudslides sweeping through California, a

failure of the monsoons in
India threatening millions of
lives, and the most worrying
the death of the Amazon.
A 3 degree rise in global
temperatures
effectively
reverses the carbon cycle.
Instead of absorbing CO2,
vegetation and soils start
releasing it in massive quantities. This in turn would tip
the planet into a runaway
global warming spiral by the
middle of this century. And
there would be few places
left on the earth we could all
run to.
What is your opinion?

Dear Editor,

The Daniel Andrews Government has no plan and

refuses to talk about prescribed burning in Victoria.
The 2009 Royal Commission
into Black Saturday recommended the State Government adopt a 5 per cent fuel
reduction target.

Considering the Andrews

Government has not publically stated their prescribed
burning targets, a question
was directed to the Minister
for Environment, Climate
Change and Water requesting the Governments target.
The response normally
those figures are articulated
through budget papers.
(Hansard, 10 February 2015)
The response will raise
anxiety in the communities
affected by fires in the past
as we see a Government not
willing to commit to prescribed burning to protect
Victoria.

The Andrews Government

must come out and explain

why they have no target for

Victoria, is it they dont understand the impact, or dont
care?
Brad Battin MP

Shadow Minister for

Environment

Dear Editor,

What has been coming through

on my Facebook page and headlining main stream daily papers
is making me sick so I compiled
the following.

After the spill, trial by media has painted a tragic picture of a human being. That
person is our Prime Minister
and no matter his shortcomings, he deserves respect.
Looking down the barrel of
a monthly debt of two billion
dollars - compliments of the
previous government - the
new government, I think,
went into panic mode but
got the effort of rectification

so wrong. Income must exceed expenditure at all times

and that is so way out of
whack. Chop from the top it
should have been for a start
eg - A good reduction of at
least 10% from all politicians
(both sides) from salary.
Cut the excessive! i.e: Those
who retire from government
should only get palatable
handouts. I suggest then
to increase GST across the
board to say 15% - thats neat
and tidy and means we are
all doing our bit. Shut up
the cry for more wages by
unions - once again if the
increase in production is not
there to balance it another
business closes which as the
dominoes go, no extra company taxes, no more wages
tax and an extra strain on
welfare payments. We are
Australians, you, me and the
bloke next door so cut the
media hype on the man and
get down to the nitty gritty.

Buying through
private sale

Enzo Raimondo
CEO, REIV
One of the questions estate
agents are frequently asked
is how to go about making
an offer on a property being
sold privately. At least 70 per
cent of Victorian homes are
sold this way.
If you are thinking about
making an offer on a home
being sold privately, here are
a few things to keep in mind.
Before you do so, it is always wise to have a qualified professional undertake
a building inspection. This is
normally money well spent apart from telling you about
the condition of the home,
the inspection report will
help you in making a decision about what price you
will go to, to buy it.
Get a copy of the vendors
section 32 statement and, if
available, the contract and
read them. When you have
finished reading, you are
bound to have questions.
Get independent advice by
putting them to your lawyer or conveyancer. Do not
fall into the trap of making
assumptions when it comes
to section 32 statements and
contracts.
When you do decide to
make your offer, it will lead
to a negotiation about the
price and terms. You may
also be competing with other buyers.

If you are uncomfortable

about negotiating yourself,
think about engaging a buyers agent. A growing number of buyers are doing this,
both to negotiate for them
and to source properties.
Whether you make your
initial offer in person, over
the phone, by email, or text
message it is a good idea to
state a time limit for the seller to accept. This indicates to
the estate agent your offer is
serious. If it is not accepted
in your time frame, you then
have a free hand when deciding what to do next.
If your initial offer is accepted, you will be asked to sign
a formal contract and pay a
deposit.
As the buyer of a home, you
are then allowed three clear
business days to reconsider.
This is known as coolingoff period. If, in that time,
you change your mind, you
can give the seller or estate
agent written notice that you
are not going ahead. Your
deposit will be returned,
except for an amount equivalent to .02 % of the price
which the seller is allowed
to keep as compensation for
losing the sale.
While house hunting, keep
in mind it is the seller who
ultimately decides who will
be the buyer. The estate
agent works for the seller
to get the best price and
terms possible; you may be
competing with other buyers; and the home you have
set your heart on will not
be yours until you and the
seller have signed and exchanged a contract.

Why More RAM is better

When it comes to improving the performance of your

computer, increasing the amount of RAM is possibly the
most effective way of boosting speed and handling power.

What does RAM do?

Your computer uses Random Access Memory (RAM) to

hold program code and process instructions that you
give your software when computing. When you turn your
computer off, RAM loses the data that was used during
the computing session. When you restart your computer
the data from the operating system and the programs
you start is once again loaded into the computers RAM.
(Although modern RAM still retains small portions of data
as either dynamic DRAM or static SDRAM.)

How much memory is enough?

The more RAM the better performance. It pays to have

as much RAM as your computer can cope with. All
computers ship with a specified amount of RAM, and most
mother boards have extra capacity to install additional
RAM. Even new computers can take extra RAM

Polo, Porsches
and people
After a deluge of over 60mm of rain
last Friday night, the 2015 Ballarat
Cup was only a 50/50 chance to be
held at the Yaloak Polo Club, in Ballan.
However, with Saturdays matches
cancelled the grounds recovered
enough to see three matches played
on Sunday.
A large crowd attended and were entertained by the
Creswick Light Horse Troop, a cavalcade of cars from the
Porsche Club of Victoria and a race of horsepower between a
helicopter, a Porsche car and a horse. It was a tight finish with
the Porsche just scoring the win.
Only four chukkas were held for each game and the Ballarat
Polo Cup was played between ANZ Mobile Lending and Just
Spas teams.
It was a back to back win for the ANZ Mobile Lending
team that had Greg Keyte, Dan OLeary, Tomas Fernandez
and Jack Berner in the saddle. The Just Spas team was led
by Gillon McLachlan, Sam Gairdner, Nick Pepper, and Nial
Donnelly.
Media personality Hamish McLachlan commented the
matches throughout the day.

Sulky Snippets
By LEN BAKER

Big day in
Gippsland

The Warragul trots on Monday February 9 was great for

the Melton/Bacchus Marsh
area which provided six of
the eight winners on the
card.
Parwans Jodi Quinlan took
the driving honours for the
afternoon with a double.
Four year old Yankee Spider/Lunar Landing mare
Illawong Moonshine snared
the Trotters Handicap for
T0 or better class over 2210
metres much to the delight
of owners Martin and Kaye
Hartnett.
Jumping straight to the
front from the pole, Illawong
Moonshine led throughout
to register a 1.3 metre victory over Kapitan Claire
which trained to give Bacchus Marsh the quinella,
with Slancio third after a
mid-race gallop, The mile
rate 2-06.2.
Jodi then combined with
partner Craig Demmler to
land the Pace for C4 to C6
class over 2210 metres with
much improved 5-Y-0 Art
Major/Her Sparky Self gelding Intergalactic which has
been a revelation since joining the stable.
Trapped three wide from

gate four, Intergalactic was

taken back to the rear of the
field, with Travtiano flying
away from outside the front
line to lead easily.
Racing wide for the final
circuit, Intergalatic produced a barnstorming finish
to blouse a death-seating Bio
Marinus in the last stride,
with Holdonsue one/one using the sprint lane for third.
The mile rate 2-02.3.

Rockbanks Gaita Pullicino

was successful with 8-Y-0 Julius Caesar/Lavra Supreme
gelding Caesar Supreme in
the Claiming Pace over 2210
metres, returning a mile rate
of 2-01.
Taken back to last from outside the front line, Caesar
Supreme commenced a forward move three wide solo
at the bell and sustaining a
long run, surged to the front
on the home turn to score
by 5.1 metres in advance of
Alrightythen which did a
big job after galloping away.
Rumsron finished third after
being shuffled back through
the field by the weakening
leader Close Shave Lombo.

Another Rockbank winner

was Art Major/Run To Live
gelding Captain Bronzie
for George Batsakis in 3-Y-0
Pace over 1790 metres.
With Ararats Mick Bellman
in the sulky, Captain Bronzie
exploded away from gate
four and was never headed,
coasting to the wire 6.7 metres ahead of Forest Verdi
which trailed in a rate of
2-02.3. Soho Tokyo finished
third after following the
pair.

Hopetoun Park duo Ross

and Greg Sugars landed the
Pace for C2 & C3 class over
2210 metres with Montu, a
4-Y-0 gelded son of Armbro Operative and Visual
Reality.
Settling mid-field from
gate five, Montu after easing three wide to follow
Dentona in the three wide
line for the final circuit,
sprinted home like a gazelle
out wide on straightening to
gain the day by a head from
Gozo Lighting (one/one) and
Something Western which
led. The mile rate 2-00.6.

Destroyer much to the delight of owner Tamara Lane.

Driven by Michael Stanley,
Chief Destroyer came out
running from gate four to
lead all of the way, recording
a 1-58.9 mile rate in defeating
Who Broke Our Halo which
raced outside him by 4.3 metres. Vice Operative (three
back the markers one/one
last lap) finished third.

At Kilmore on Wednesday,
Meltons Beau Tindale combined with Darraweit reinswoman Lisa Miles to land
the Pace for R2 to R4 class
over 2180 metres with 5-Y-0
Art Major/Lots More Holmes gelding Lots More Art.

Sent forward from gate six,

Lots More Art led virtually
throughout in defeating Our
Pontiac and Cristian Torado
in a rate of 2-01.6.

Jodi Quinlan was again

a winner at Kilmore on
Wednesday, when Kiwi
import Sir Macs Man (Panspacificflight/Galleons Testimony) snared the 3-Y-0 Pace
over 1690 metres.
Starting from gate two on
the second line, Sir Macs
Man coming off a first up
unplaced effort at Geelong
on January 25, ran home
solidly from mid-field to
gain the day over first starter
Hypervigilant which trailed

the weakening pacemaker

Bee Bee Ell and Elluva Smile
(three back the markers) in a
rate of 1-57.3.

Meetings for the week:

Wednesday Geelong @
Melton/Shepparton, Thursday Maryborough/Mildura, Friday Melton, Saturday Terang (Cup), Sunday
Ballarat, Monday Yarra
Valley, Tuesday Echuca.
Horses to follow: Shesa
Amason, Just Leave, Milady
Denver, Nor Nor West, Major Cruiser, Majestic Moves,
Barbra Jean, Hannas Beach
Girl, Kimama.

Four year old Somebeachsomewhere/Lady Joy gelding Admiral Joy has a fair
amount of quality to him
and outstayed his rivals to
capture the VHRSC Provincial Cup (Heat 3) for C1 class
over 2210 metres.
Taking a concession for Zac
Phillips, Admiral Joy starting from gate three on the
second line was sent forward
once the pace slackened to
park outside the pacemaker
Blacks A Beauty.
Racing to the front prior to
the home turn, Admiral Joy
had 1.6 metres to spare at the
finish over Our Great Spirit
(one/one) and Liv Lavish
(three wide last lap from last)
in a mile rate of 2-03.2.

Warrenheip trainer Robert

McCartney snared the Vicbred Pace for C1 class over
2240 metres at Swan Hill on
Tuesday with five year old It

Avenues Premier team

after a string of good performances over the past few
games took on final four aspirants Geelong West. Avenue were confident of a good
showing against a quality
side and took the game right
up to the opposition.

Sam Shannahan led the way

with an 8 shot win, whilst
Glenn Sargents rink also
overcame their opposition
to record a 4 shot win. Martin Sheas rink tried hard all
day before succumbing by 4
shots, whilst Andrew Myers
rink were well beaten by 22
shots.

Nonetheless winning 2
out of the 4 rinks is indeed
a good result, and to go
down by only 14 shots, on an
away visit is something for
the Club to work on in the
off-season.
Final result - Avenue 81 lost
Geelong West 95

Division 3 hosted second placed Webbcona in a

game that was always going to be close, and it didnt

disappoint.

Avenue took the early lead

but Webbcona showed why
they were in second place
and staged a comeback
to make a real game of it.
Thankfully Avenue were
able to re-group and come
away victors, with the final
margin being 3 shots.
For Avenue Paul OFarrells
rink and Charlie Grants
rink led the way, recording
a 4 shot and 5 shot win respectively. Frank Pomeroy
just failed to get over the
line, going down by 2 shots
whilst Vic Foxfords rink lost
its first game for the season,
falling short by 4 shots.
Nonetheless the win gives
the side a psychological
advantage over their closest rivals, and Avenue will
be buoyed by the return
of some important players
next week. The win also
guarantees Avenue top spot,
irrespective of the results of
the last round next week,
and the double chance in the
finals.
Final score - Avenue 94 def

Division 5 made the arduous journey to Linton to

face the fifth placed side. As
the ladder stood before the
round there were 3 teams
competing for one spot, so
every game was vital. Unfortunately for Avenue they
were unable to match it with
their very keen opposition.
Di Hardiments rink, despite
leading on the 21st end before
dropping a 7 to lose the
lead, fought back to win the
last 3 ends and gain the win
and a valuable 2 points. Peter
Glass rink also fought hard
all day to salvage a draw.
Unfortunately Bob Delaneys rink and Dave McKendricks rink faced opposition players from higher
grades and struggled to win
ends all day, going down by
18 and 14 shots.
Final score - Avenue 85 lost
Linton 113

Division 8 - did not play

this week as the majority of
the games in this division
were cancelled in Ballarat
due to previous nights rainfall. The side will finish the
season in top spot and will

MIDWEEK
Division 1 played ladder
leaders Central Wendouree
and put in a sterling performance to force a draw
against their highly rated
opponents.
Avenue managed to win 2
of the 3 rinks with Di Hardiments rink winning by 2
shots and Glenys Kays rink
winning by 1 shot, with
Molly Whitings rink going
down by 3 shots, Given that
Central Wendouree are flag
favourites (again) it was a n
excellent performance. This
week Avenue play second
bottom side Daylesford and
still have a mathematical
chance of securing a finals
berth in this final game.
Division 2 played Victoria but lost all 3 rinks to go
down by 33 shots. Its been a
long season for these players,

when it was required and
went on to win by 13 shots.
