The 60s was a wild and vibrant era from poinsettia red and robins egg blue to sunbeam yellow and avocado green, bold
hues were found on everything, from curios to cars. Modernism and abstract expressionism shaped new cultural ideals as
these stunning shades lent in a free flowing vibe. Subtle yet striking, our retro coloured muse is back in vogue.

Fumihikos dearest cause today is
protesting against Zaha Hadids arena
for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. He
organised an online petition because in
his opinion, the oversized structure
will disturb the visual harmony of the
heritage environs. So far, it has garnered
more than 13,000 signatures urging
the Japan Sports Council to upgrade
the existing Meiji Jingo Gaien Stadium
instead. We wait and wonder towards
which direction the verdict will sway....

Get up close and personal with global design leaders: Each issue, we offer you an
exclusive sneak peek into the creative lives of awe-inspiring visionaries
text by RISHA MERCHANT
living legend in the field of international design and architecture, Alessandro Mendini is an unstoppable vortex
of ideas, inculcating dynamism and eccentricity in every piece he envisions. In the 70s, the Italian maestro also
essayed the role of Editor-in-Chief for design magazines like Casabella, Modo and Domus, and his works centre
around innumerable inventive designs for objects, furniture, interiors and installations and is recognised worldwide, after
collaborating with brands such as Alessi, Driade, Poltronova, Abet, Artemide, Zanotta and Swatch International. He set up
Atelier Mendini in his home in Milan in 1989. We caught up with the genius, who shares a slice of his extraordinary day.

An insight into the multi faceted icons day of solitude and radical creations
7 AM I slowly open my eyes to the morning sun. From the kitchen window, Prince the guest cat drops by for his daily visit
7.15 AM I work out on my exercise bike and hop straight into a steaming shower. Text messages from close ones wish
me a fine day 8 AM In my kitchen, I relish a small cup of coffee with biscuits and honey, followed by a few moments of
silence and concentration 9.15 AM I descend on a steep stepladder, into the Atelier located below my home. My collaborators and I have a relaxing moment together in the coffee room with hot beverages and pastries. We exchange information
about projects and banter about our love lives 9.45 AM A short meeting with my architect brother Francesco, who directs
the Atelier 9.50 AM I then visit Beatrices desk, who coordinates all activities. We make a summary of different subjects,

THE TAKEOFF
After graduating from the Academy of
Architecture, they worked with architects
while harbouring a shared dream of doing
something on our own. It all started with
a single interior design project that came
their way. It was just the two of us discussing big ideas, Sangeeta remembers.
Over time, their repertoire expanded and
their intuitive structures spoke volumes.
TWO TO TANGO
Ours is a straight forward practice,
without any fuss or frills. We fight, argue
and say sweet nothings in front of our studio, Sanjeev reveals. Despite being strong
advocates of relevance and timelessness,
their design approach varies from each
other a trait that works in their favour.
We come up with options separately
and open it for discussion to the team
it is like 15 people playing ping pong at the
same time. We are each others anchors
as we rule out everything when we both

natural as if they were alive. Yes, the children had just turned
to these singular books, when kling, ling, kling, ling the
bell was heard again. They knew that Godfather Drosselmeier
was now about to display his Christmas gift, and ran towards a
table that stood against the wall, covered by a curtain reaching
from the ceiling to the floor. The curtain, behind which he had
remained so long concealed, was quickly drawn aside, and
what saw the children then?
Upon a green meadow, spangled with flowers, stood a
noble castle, with clear glass windows and golden turrets. A
musical clock began to play, when the doors and windows
flew open and little men and women, with feathers in their
hats, and long flowing trains, were seen sauntering about in
the rooms. In the middle hall, which seemed as if it were all
on fire, so many little tapers were burning in silver chandeliers,
there were children in white frocks and green jackets, dancing
to the sound of the music. A man in an emerald green cloak,
at intervals put his head out of the window, nodded, and then
disappeared; and Godfather Drosselmeier himself, only that he
was not much bigger than Papas thumb, came now and then
to the door of the castle, looked about him, and then went
in again. Fred, with his arms resting upon the table, gazed
at the beautiful castle, and the little walking and dancing
figures, and then said, Godfather Drosselmeier, let me go
into your castle.

FROZEN ASSETS
hile the rest of us are huddling cosy in the comfort of our woollen blankets and drinking hot cocoa, Simon Beck
is outside in the bristling snow...out of choice. What began as a pastime for this orienteering mapmaker in 2004,
eventually turned into his foremost passion creating what he prefers to call snow art. Outside a resort in Savoie,
France, the Englishman treads for hours on end on freshly fallen snow over frozen lakes to construct intricate imprints. He
starts off with planning a mathematical pattern and plotting them carefully on graph paper. The area is surveyed and major
points of design are estimated before beginning his novel process. From the centre he calculates the distance to another
point, walks out to it and then returns back to the middle by either counting his steps or using a measuring tape. Despite their
complexities, they are solely crafted using simply a pair of snowshoes and a compass. Intriguingly, these unique works look
different when viewed from various angles as the day progresses. Like a poetic parting, it is heavy downfall of his very medium
that can turn his art into an ephemeral mirage within a day, sometimes even a few hours.

On earth, millions of magnetic waves float around hoping to get

undermine handwritten word and the use of paper. But amazingly,
writing has not said its last word. From typography to calligraphy, street

becoming a pictorial object that is filling spaces, surfaces and materials.

Presenting the finest in furniture, furnishings and
accessories from the city that is slowly transforming
into the worlds design capital
produced by PRAMITI MADHAVJI
n the ten years since its humble beginnings, the LDF has blossomed from being a city centric affair that promotes its flourishing
design community, to a nationwide event that highlights international talent too. With a very informative guide detailing the events
of the week, we scoured the streets to find the finest product
displays. Our selections from the V&A Museum, Designjunction,
100% Design, Brompton Design District and more.
PETER MARIGOLD
A commission to envision Gallery Libby Sellers meeting table was the starting point of this diverse and dynamic range.
The concept behind it is an inversion of our expectations a play on the word wooden. Using a single small piece of
wood to make a mould, Peter build a series of vessels. The process sees that piece is pasted with hot wax in order to
create an impression of the wood. This action is repeated so as to intuitively lead to a unique form from the numerable
wax impressions, which is then cast into a final sturdier material. The end result is an amalgam of moments, Peter
adds. The forms are wooden...they have been created using (the material) rather than being made of (it).

Located in the middle of Mumbais busy burbs, Simone and Ajay Aroras
sprawling, lily white abode is a picture of sophistication, nature embracing
serenity and Yuletide splendour
TEXT BY ADITI GAITONDE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JIGNESH JHAVERI/PHOTOLINK PRODUCED BY SHAAN SHAHANI
t took Simone Arora close to four years of copious planning, detailed monitoring and intensive curating to see
her labour of love come alive from ground up. So, it seemed only natural that she christened the family bungalow Amore. Constructed on a 13,500 sq ft plot, the straight lined shell, as envisioned by Hafeez Contractor,
is a six level, stacked Lego block-esque structure with high ceilings, seamless space integration and large glass
windows overlooking a lush garden and a fresh aqua pool. Being a perfectionist who is mindful of detail, Simone
went on to meticulously create a harmonious and tranquil space in her signature contemporary style. We join her
this Christmas as she dresses her home in the spirit of the season....
You are known for your understated and refined taste. Tell us how this translated into the story of your
beautiful home.
I went to Hafeez with a file of magazine cuttings and briefed him about the edifice, as I wanted uniformity in
the material from flooring to the colour of the walls, it had to be like a canvas. We connected instantly and he
showed me a sketch the very next day! After the construction, I began working on the interiors with the help of
my mother Zarine Khan, who is a trained interior designer. I believe a home should embody you. To find a certain
look that reflects who I am, we visited shows in Italy and Paris and combed through exhibitor halls for the perfect
fit. I worked with textures and monochromatic hues with simple prints to create a minimalistic, subtle yet luxurious space. Barring the entrance door, everything else was brought in from abroad and affixed, a process that
took two years. I had a force of people behind me my mother aided with sizes, my sister Sussanne helped add
touches of colour and my husband Ajay made sure the whole house runs on BMS (Building Management System)
that integrates the control of all electronics via an iPad. Once the place was done, my family and friends liked my
sensibilities of using several European brands to create a luxe decor with a neutral and mellow palette. It got me
thinking and eventually led to the creation of my store, Simone...Naturally Inspired.
Decor wise, how do you transform your space to celebrate Christmas?
My white Christmas has hints of green, silver and gold mixed with aubergine ribbon wrapped presents. Every year
I host a grand lunch for my nephews and niece where we enjoy cakes, pastries and cookies. The tablescape is
decorated with floral arrangements, candles, silver cutlery and geometrically shaped serveware with certain items
laid higher than the rest, as I like to play with levels and shapes. We laugh, talk, open gifts and spend time with
each other; its an intimate family celebration.
Right In the informal living room, Simone wraps a gift by the Christmas tree decorated with silver and gold hued ornaments,
all from Singapore. The beige B&B Italia sofa with aubergine chenille cushions from Paris sit behind a chrome reflective
top coffee table also from the French capital. Completing the lavish scene are handmade round and oval glass bowls from
Belgian designer Anna Torfs

ome cities insist that the house is a bright and serene shelter...and Milan is like this. Laura Dragottis apartment, that
was once a bowls club, has been designed with the mission of creating an oasis of stillness and light, where you go
back at the end of the day, treat your friends with a glass of wine, while children play, read books, and you enjoy the
privilege of a view surrounded by greens, not of grey facades of other buildings. Making an ideal setting, her house is from
the early 20th century with high ceilings and harmonious proportions, with the luxury of a terrace that is almost a garden,
set among the flowered balconies of the other apartments.
All the furnishings have been entirely designed by Laura, who studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and has
an irrepressible passion for interior design. Expanded in the absence of walls and with the use of whites from partitions
to the ceilings, the internal space has furniture limited to few well-calibrated pieces in shades of cream and white, for a
fine balance between hospitality and design. Christmas time itself is all in white with the dishes, salad bowls and poetic
pottery of Giorgio Brunello. The heart of the house is the living room that is a fluid space encompassing the entrance hall,
lounge, dining room and kitchen. Only a low wall separates the working area of the cookroom from the table, thus allowing
the lady of the house to interact with her guests while preparing food. In the boudoir, spaces are compressed but rationality and elegance continue to dictate the style. A canopy double bed in lacquered wood becomes a cabinet where laundry
baskets are kept in the master bedroom, while in her daughter Voilas room, a wrought iron bed has been carefully painted
white. Objects and ornaments are limited by choice to a few and a large number of boxes and baskets books and magazines are sparse and become part of the decoration, while the clothes and other items needed are neatly arranged in the
dressing rooms obtained in the sleeping area. Laura does not like to talk about herself, but remembers how restructuring
the duplex was an exercise in style over the years with the aim of combining everyday necessities with aesthetics. The
trick, Laura says, is to keep the space as open as possible, and to focus on light materials in order to balance the colour
of objects that surround us.

e were greeted with a happy dose of holiday cheer from the minute we rang the doorbell. Lush evergreens, the pristine Christmas
tree adorned with twinkling lights, adorable knick-knacks and
friendly faces transformed the space into an inviting wonderland. In contrast
to her effervescent lounge Bar Palladio in Jaipur, Barbara has crafted a home
that is calm, casual and cosy, all at once. Moving to India was never a part of
her agenda. Seven years and still counting, this Swiss-Italian expat had fallen
for the Pink city.
NORDIC NOSTALGIA
Christmas isnt just about a culture, but your experiences and time spent
with family. Its a reunion, where we would sit and make conversations while
indulging in the traditional Italian cake called panettone and fondue bourguignonne, says Barbara as she reminisces about her childhood days in her
hometown St Moritz, Switzerland. Her ways of local celebrating is influenced
by the northern part of Europe decorating the tree and attending midnight
mass at their local church. The interiors echo her memories as celebratory
elements pepper the harmonious decor. It also reflects Barbaras warm and
jovial nature, as she loves to host friends who visit Jaipur from all around the
world. Barbara says, I wanted my house to be very clean and open, with lots
of natural light and breeze. I layered items within a neutral palette in a rather
informal way to lend a laid-back and inviting appeal.
ELEGANT ENTERTAINING
When in this city, Barbara likes to make merry in the good old fashioned way
with the customary colours. Its that time of the year when you can create your own decorations, like the way we did as children. Lots of candles,
fairy lights, handmade ornaments and festive food, and I am all set to host
a grand feast for my close friends, concludes Barbara as she is pulled for
attention by her Beagle babies, Olga and Hugo.

thmar Prenner cant stop tinkering with things around his house. The sculptor, who used to
live in Munich, loves to experiment with materials, with a particular penchant for wood, making
decorative, functional implements. I like furniture that stand like sculptures in the room, he
says. One day, however, he discovered that designing such elegant creations was no longer enough;
so he began to make bigger plans, like building a complete house. Years earlier, he had bought a
dilapidated 14th century farmhouse in Vinschgau, South Tyrol in northern Italy. Initially, he planned
to convert the ruin which consisted of a living room, storage and hayloft into a holiday home. He
had known this place since childhood, as it used to belong to his uncle, and he himself grew up on a
neighbouring mountain. At some stage it dawned on me: This isnt going to be a holiday home, this is
where Im going to liveI love this valley; its one of the most unspoilt in this area. Two years later, he
and his brother Artur, also a trained carpenter, set to work on the project. We chopped and changed
removing things here, adding things there, recounts the creative. When they were finished, they had
built a modern, gable ended 1,560 sq ft building on the original shell. The bedroom is now in the former
living area, while the storeroom was converted into an open stairwell with two wooden catwalks. On
one of these, Othmar set up his office, and the other connects the kitchen and dining niches with the
open living area. You wont find a single place in the entire house where wood and plaster dont join
smoothly and seamlessly, he says, not without pride.

n your next visit to the English capital, dare to head a little past the Tate
Modern and find the trendiest temporary address in town. From Deutschlands
acclaimed hotel group citizenM, their Bankside
property has the words Another World Is
Possible rightfully gracing its facade. Step in
and it is like walking into your arty friends loft,
peppered with zestful designs and a young,
contagious vibrancy that rethinks the boutique
inn concept. Realised alongside Dutch firm
Concrete, the ground floor has an open plan
lobby that, according to CMO Robin Chadha,
is styled to look like the living room of a
very well-travelled person. The uber trendy
space is seasoned with artworks, curios and
tomes while canteenM, where you can grab
a bite, emulates a home kitchen. Inside the
192 guest rooms find wall to wall windows,
super large beds that touch three partitions
and spacecraft like showers. Decor aside, their
highlight remains the idea of serving the independent guest from check-in to luncheons, it
is all self-serve.
