1936ofa12ouncebottle.Witharadioadvertisingcampaignfeaturingthejingle
"PepsiColahitsthespot/Twelvefullounces,that'salot/Twiceasmuchforanickel,
too/PepsiColaisthedrinkforyou",arrangedinsuchawaythatthejingleneverends.
Pepsiencouragedpricewatchingconsumerstoswitch,obliquelyreferringtotheCoca
Colastandardof6.5ouncesperbottleforthepriceoffivecents(anickel),insteadof
the12ouncesPepsisoldatthesameprice.[6]Comingatatimeofeconomiccrisis,the
campaignsucceededinboostingPepsi'sstatus.From1936to1938,PepsiCola'sprofits

WalterMackwasnamedthenewPresidentofPepsiColaand
guidedthecompanythroughthe1940s.Mack,whosupported
progressivecauses,noticedthatthecompany'sstrategyofusing
advertisingforageneralaudienceeitherignoredAfricanAmericans
orusedethnicstereotypesinportrayingblacks.HerealizedAfrican
AmericanswereanuntappednichemarketandthatPepsistoodto
Pepsi
gainmarketsharebytargetingitsadvertisingdirectlytowards
them.[8]Tothisend,hehiredHennanSmith,anadvertising
executive"fromtheNegronewspaperfield"[9]toleadanallblacksalesteam,whichhadtobecutdueto
theonsetofWorldWarII.
In1947,WalterMackresumedhisefforts,hiringEdwardF.Boydtoleadatwelvemanteam.Theycame
upwithadvertisingportrayingblackAmericansinapositivelight,suchasonewithasmilingmother
holdingasixpackofPepsiwhileherson(ayoungRonBrown,whogrewuptobeSecretaryof
Commerce)[10]reachesupforone.Anotheradcampaign,titled"LeadersinTheirFields",profiledtwenty
prominentAfricanAmericanssuchasNobelPeacePrizewinnerRalphBuncheandphotographerGordon
Parks.

Fromthe1930sthroughthelate1950s,"PepsiColaHitsTheSpot"
wasthemostcommonlyusedsloganinthedaysofoldradio,classic
motionpictures,andlatertelevision.Itsjingle(conceivedinthe
dayswhenPepsicostonlyfivecents)wasusedinmanydifferent
formswithdifferentlyrics.Withtheriseofradio,Pepsiutilizedthe
servicesofayoung,upandcomingactressnamedPollyBergento
promoteproducts,oftentimeslendinghersingingtalentstothe
classic"...HitsTheSpot"jingle.
FilmactressJoanCrawford,aftermarryingthenPepsiCola
PresidentAlfredN.SteelebecameaspokespersonforPepsi,
appearingincommercials,televisionspecialsandtelevisedbeauty
pageantsonbehalfofthecompany.Crawfordalsohadimagesofthe
softdrinkplacedprominentlyinseveralofherlaterfilms.When
Steelediedin1959CrawfordwasappointedtotheBoardof
DirectorsofPepsiCola,apositionshehelduntil1973,althoughshe
wasnotaboardmemberofthelargerPepsiCo,createdin1965.[13]
TheBuffaloBisons,anAmericanHockeyLeagueteam,were
sponsoredbyPepsiColainitslateryearstheteamadoptedthe
beverage'sred,whiteandbluecolorschemealongwitha
modificationofthePepsilogo(withtheword"Buffalo"inplaceof
thePepsiColawordmark).TheBisonsceasedoperationsin1970

AccordingtoConsumerReports,inthe1970s,therivalrycontinuedtoheatupthemarket.Pepsiconducted

competedtogetothermusicianstoadvertiseitsbeverages.
In1992,followingthedissolutionoftheSovietUnion,CocaColawasintroducedtotheRussianmarket.
Asitcametobeassociatedwiththenewsystem,andPepsitotheold,CocaColarapidlycaptureda
significantmarketsharethatmightotherwisehaverequiredyearstoachieve.ByJuly2005,CocaCola
