Chapter 1
Overview
1.1 Starsza Mowa
1.1.1 Books
The Witcher series is a series of short stories, at rst
published in Fantastyka, a Polish science ction and fantasy magazine. The rst short story, Wiedmin (The
Witcher) (1986), was written for a contest held by the
magazine, where it won third place. The rst four stories of the witcher Geralt and the story Droga, z ktrej
si nie wraca (The Road with No Return), which took
place in the same world, but dozens of years before the
witcher stories were originally collected in a short story
collection titled Wiedmin (out of print and now obsolete; all fteen short stories were later collected in three
books published by superNOWA).
The second short story collection to be published was
Miecz przeznaczenia (Sword of Destiny). While The Last
Wish collection was published after Miecz przeznaczenia,
it replaced Wiedmin as the rst book, as it included all of
the stories collected in Wiedmin except Droga, z ktorej
si nie wraca (the only one not featuring Geralt). Although new short stories were added in The Last Wish,
they took place before the ones in Miecz przeznaczenia.
Droga, z ktrej si nie wraca, along with Co si
koczy, co si zaczyna, a non-canon story/alternative
ending of the Witcher saga about Geralt and Yennefer's
wedding, written as a wedding gift for Sapkowskis
friends, were later published in the book Co si koczy,
co si zaczyna. The rest of the stories in this book are
not connected to the Witcher series in any way. In some
Polish editions, Droga, z ktrej si nie wraca and Co
si koczy, co si zaczyna are added to either The Last
Wish or Miecz przeznaczenia.
Andrzej Sapkowski is a series of fantasy short stories (collected in two books, except for two stories) and six novels
about the witcher Geralt of Rivia. In Sapkowskis books,
witchers are monster-hunters who receive special training
and have their bodies modied at an early age to provide
them with supernatural abilities so they can cope with
dangerous monsters. The books have been adapted into

The process gives a witcher special powers, such as the
use of low-level magical abilities based on the four elements, faster movement, rapid healing, quicker reexes,
and the ability to drink toxic potions that would harm normal people. The only downside is that Witchers become
sterile when they pass the trials.
Witchers also wear a magical medallion that will vibrate
when magical creatures are nearby.
Witchers typically carry two swords. One a silver blade
and the other an iron or steel blade both of which can be
made of metal from a meteor.

Yennefer is Geralt's soul mate although their relationship is dicult and full of drama. Both Geralt and Yennefer are sterile, which adds another level of tragedy to
the mix. Yennefer has a hard time accepting the fact and
tries various methods of restoring her fertility.
Yennefer was born on Belleteyn of the year 1173. She
lived in the capital city of Aedirn - Vengerberg. She
was the youngest member of the Council of Sorcerers
and later she became a member of the Lodge of Sorceresses. During the Battle of Sodden Hill she was blinded
by Fringilla Vigo, a Nilfgaardian sorceress. Her sight was
magically restored.

The Saga
The Saga focuses on the story of Geralt of Rivia and Ciri,
the Child of Destiny. Ciri, a princess of a recently conquered country, becomes a witcher-in-training, and a key
pawn in international politics, and Geralt is pulled into a
whirlwind of events in his attempts to protect her.

2.3.2 Setting
Sapkowskis short stories and novels are praised for their
ironic sense of humor and subtle anachronisms (e.g. one
of the wizards taking part in the Gathering of the Wizards is constantly complaining about ecological issues).
Sapkowski tries to emphasize the shades of gray in everyone (e.g. one of the local rulers engaged in an incestuous
relation with his own sister is shown as a caring father
at least according to the standards of Sapkowskis world).
The universe was never ocially named by the writer; the
largest entity the continent is simply called The Continent, and Polish fans have labeled the universe Wiedminland ('Witcherland').

and the ability to drink toxic potions that would harm normal people.

3.1 The Last Wish (book)
The Witcher
Wiedmin
The story begins with Geralt entering Vizima. Shortly afterwards, he kills three men in a bar ght. He is escorted
to Velerad, the elderly castellan of Vizima. Near the beginning of King Foltests reign, he got his sister, Adda,
pregnant. Both Adda and her baby daughter died shortly
after birth and were buried together in a double con.
Seven years later, the daughter awoke and slaughtered the
inhabitants of the palace. She had become a striga.
Geralt meets with Foltest, who warns him not to harm
the striga, for a wizard had told him that if someone prevented the striga from returning to her con by the third
crowing of the rooster, then she would be cured, turning

into an ordinary little girl. Geralt asks to see a miller (a
survivor of one of the strigas earlier attacks). The soldier
that brings him to Geralt is Foltest, disguised. He gives
Geralt leave to kill his daughter if he found that she was
an incurable case.
Geralt spends the night at the old palace (Foltest having
moved to a new palace, unplagued by the strigas attacks).
During the early night, Lord Ostrit, a magnate, tries to
bribe Geralt into running away, as he wishes the striga to
survive. This would eventually horrify the inhabitants of
Vizima, who would more easily support Vizimir of Novigrads rule. Geralt refuses, knocks Lord Ostrit out, and
ties him up. At midnight, he cuts Ostrit loose, using him
as bait. He is soon found and killed by the striga.
Geralt ghts with the striga, reluctant to use his silver
sword. He ties the striga with a silver chain, which she
breaks free of, despite silver being an antithesis to monsters of magic. She is eventually scared o when Geralt
uses his sorcery to project the hate and malice in her own
mind back at her. Geralt settles down in the double con
to wait for morning. In the morning, he sees an ordinary
little girl who is lying on the oor. Leaning over her, he
sees too late that her eyes are open. Using the last remnants of her talons, the striga slashes Geralts throat. As
he subdues the girl/striga, Geralt hears the third crowing
of the rooster. Finally, he binds his neck, knowing he will
faint.
The witcher wakes up, his neck bandaged, with Velerad
(who was part of the group that had planned to just have
the striga killed) admitting he was in the wrong. He assures Geralt that his silver sword, his three thousand oren
reward and his possessions are safe. Geralt, soothed, falls
asleep.
A Grain of Truth
Ziarno prawdy
While travelling through the forest, Geralt comes to the
corpses of a man and a woman that seem at rst glance to
have been killed by wolves, but the wounds tell a dierent
story. Looking closer, Geralt notices that the woman has
a blue rose pinned to her dress.
Heading in the direction the pair must have come from,
the witcher arrives at a seemingly deserted mansion, in
front of which he sees a strange woman who runs from
him. The owner of the house, a beast called Nivellen, allows our hero to enter his house, which is enchanted to
obey his every whim, and in the end tells Geralt his story:
coming from a line of robbers, Nivellen at some point
was cursed by a priestess to be a beast in human form
until some conditions are fullled, something related to
blood and love. So for some time, Nivellen has tried to
undo the curse by entertaining relationships with dierent women, all merchant daughters, but to no avail.
Before departing, Geralt warns Nivellen of his newest
lady friend, Vereena, who may be a rusalka (water nymph

that lures men and children to their deaths). Somewhere
along the road Geralt realizes what it was his horse sensed
at Nivellens manor and returns promptly to warn him,
but is greeted by Vereena, who turns out to be a bruxa (a
vampire-like creature that uses song to knock people out)
and a ght ensues.
In the middle of the ght, just when Geralt gets overwhelmed, Nivellen shows up and joins the ght. At some
point during the ght, Nivellen impales the bruxa on a
pole, enabling Geralt to nish it o. But before the nal
blow is struck, Vereena confesses her love for Nivellen,
which breaks the curse.
The story ends with the key to the curse: There is a grain
of truth in every fairy tale, said the witcher quietly. Love
and blood. They both possess a mighty power. Wizards
and learned men have been racking their brains over this
for years, but they haven't arrived at anything, except thatExcept what, Geralt?"
It has to be true love.
The Lesser Evil

On the eve of market day, Geralt rides into Blaviken with
a kikimore-carcass in tow. He seeks out Caldemeyn, the
towns alderman, to try and get a reward for the dead critter. Hes out of luck, though, and Caldemeyn suggests
throwing the carcass in the local cesspool. However, one
of the aldermans sta, Carrypebble, mentions that the
local wizard, Master Irion, might fancy a look at the creature. All agree its worth a try and head to Irions tower
to nd the mage.
Master Irion is far more interested in Geralt than in some
kikimore carcass, however. When Geralt steps inside
the tower, he steps straight into an illusion. Finding the
wizard surrounded by a veritable garden of Eden (complete with a naked, young woman casually picking apples), Geralt recognizes the man as Stregobor, a mage
whom he'd last seen in King Idis court in Kovir, and not
Master Irion at all. The wizard explains that since he is
occupying Irions tower, that it seemed a tting tribute to
call himself by that name. It also did not hurt to conceal
his true identity.
After a few pleasantries, Stregobor nally gets to the
point. He pleads for Geralts help claiming that a monster is pursuing him, seeking to kill him. After a little bit
of prodding, the wizard confesses to Geralt that the monster is in fact a young woman, whom he says was born under the Curse of the Black Sun. Geralt scos at the idea,
calling it absurd. Stregobor begs the witcher to help him,
to kill the girl saying that she is far more of a monster than
the kikimore the witcher recently slew. He insists that it
would be the lesser evil to kill her. Geralt refuses, and
leaves.
Meanwhile, Renfri has entered Blaviken along with her
band of miscreants. Geralt meets them all in the tavern

Wolf
The Witcher (Polish: Wiedmin [vjdmin]) is an action
role-playing hack and slash video game developed by CD
Projekt RED and published by Atari, Inc.
The game is based on the book series of the same name
by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.[5] The Witcher takes
place in a medieval fantasy world and follows the story
of Geralt, one of a few remaining "witchers" traveling
monster hunters for hire, gifted with unnatural powers.
The games system of moral choices as part of the storyline was noted for its time-delayed consequences and
lack of black-and-white morality.
The game utilises BioWare's proprietary Aurora Engine.
A console version using an entirely new engine and combat system, titled The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf,
was to be released in Autumn 2009 but was suspended
due to payment problems with the console developers,

On 18 September 2009, CD Projekt RED ocially conrmed that they began working on a sequel, The Witcher
2: Assassins of Kings, which was released on 17 May
2011, for the PC[7] and on 17 April 2012, for Xbox 360.
The third game of the series has been announced and titled The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and is set to be released

stole the mutagens so he could make superhuman bodyguards to protect humanity on their journey. When Geralt does not believe him in spite of some oddly familiar
points of view, the Grand Master casts an illusion of this
future and the witcher nds himself in an icy wasteland.
Unimpressed, he hunts the Grand Master, running into
several ape-like monsters that humans will supposedly devolve to, and meeting some of the characters he helped
(or crossed) throughout the adventure. At the end, Geralt impales the Grand Master, and the King of the Wild
Hunt (the Witcher equivalent of the Grim Reaper) arrives
to personally claim the Grand Masters soul (As the Wild
Hunt appears only for the worst and most foul souls). Geralt swiftly escapes back to the real world. Back in the
Citadel, he is left with the unsettling discovery that the
Grand Master, now dead on the oor, is wearing an aged
anti-magic medallion similar to Alvins.
In the ending cut scene, the king pays Geralt and the
witcher walks away. But suddenly an assassin attacks the
king. Geralt duels the assassin and kills him. When he
pulls o the mask, he discovers that the man has vertical pupils, just like the witchers, setting the stage for The

can create unique game worlds, rather than recycling the
same tiled objects over and over again. CD Projekt's version of the engine supports lightmaps generated in 3ds
Max. Shadows generated this way are reported to look
more realistic, and provide better game performance.
The modied engine also includes texture paint, a special
tool that allows the developer to paint the environment using custom textures. This enables the developer to make
the game world truly unique. New realistic skyboxes
and water eects designed specically for The Witcher
were added to the engine. The natural light during various phases of the day is realistically altered, and the day
and night transitions serve to enrich the games ambiance.
The weather can dynamically change from a light drizzle
to a dark, stormy downpour accompanied by thunder and
lightning.

However, Triss teleports him out of the situation and to

5.3.2 Plot
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings contains many dierent
paths and storylines, along with multiple endings. As in
the rst game, the player takes control of Geralt of Rivia,
one of the few remaining witchers. Witchers are humans
that have been genetically enhanced and trained to ght
monsters from a young age. They have special powers,
diering for each witcher. These include alchemy, magic,
and sword handling.
Characters
The Witcher 2 features an extensive cast of vivid characters with developed personalities, which has often been
cited by reviewers as one of its strengths.[11] The following is a list of some of the main characters in the game,
with their Polish and English voice actors in parentheses:
Geralt of Rivia (Jacek Rozenek[12] and Doug
Cockle) the protagonist of the trilogy as well as the
main character in the book series. He is a witcher
by trade, skilled in killing monsters.

Triss Merigold (Agnieszka Kunikowska[12] and

plays an important role in the political intrigue underlying the games plot.

resolved some of the above noted issues.[27] Additionally, Patch 1.1 also removed Digital Rights Management
(DRM) from the game.[28] Tech Spot, a computer technology online publication, claimed that based on user reports, the DRM on the retail version of The Witcher 2
was responsible for drastically reduced frame rates and
increased game load times.[29] Patch 1.1 reportedly increased frame rate simply by removing the DRM.[29] The
release notes indicated that the Game now runs 5-30%
more eciently and game loading has been accelerated.
Eciency increases will vary depending on system conguration and game version.[29] The release notes also
stated that owners of the boxed versions of the game
would notice the most signicant improvements.[29]
Players who purchased The Witcher 2: Assassins of
Kings through Steam were required to download several
9GB patches to update the game to versions 1.1 and
1.2, respectively. In contrast, the 1.1 patch for nonSteam purchasers was only 15MB. In an interview with
Eurogamer.net,[30] developer CD Projekt RED stated
they were aware of the issue and were working with Valve
to resolve the problem.
Enhanced Edition
On 27 January 2012, CD Projekt RED announced an
Enhanced Edition of The Witcher 2 via its sister company GOG.com, which was released on 17 April 2012
on the Xbox 360 and on the Windows PC via Steam and
GOG.com.[37] The Enhanced Edition added over 10GB
of new content, including four hours of gameplay, thirtysix minutes of cinematics including a new intro and outro,
and a host of xes to gameplay and the interface. All
existing owners of The Witcher 2 received free upgrades
to the Enhanced Edition, and could pre-load the update
starting 11 April 2012. All new copies on PC and Xbox
360 shipped with the additional content on board.

Sales
In August 2011, The Witcher 2 was reported to sell more

940,000 copies sold, 200,000 were online sales (digital

sold 40,000 copies.[60] Within the same time period,
200,000 copies of The Witcher 2 were sold on Steam.[60]

6.1.1
Biography
Sapkowski studied economics, and before turning to writing, he had worked as a senior sales representative for
a foreign trade company. He started his literary career
as a translator, in particular, of science ction. He says
he wrote his rst short story, The Witcher (Wiedmin)on
a whim, in order to enter a contest by Polish science
ction and fantasy magazine Fantastyka. Being an expert in marketing, he says he knew how to sell, and indeed, he won the 3rd prize.[2] The story was published in
Fantastyka in 1986 and was enormously successful both
with readers and critics. Sapkowski has created a cycle
of tales based on the world of The Witcher, comprising
three collections of short stories and ve novels. This cycle and his many other works have made him one of the
best-known fantasy authors in Poland in the 1990s.[3]
Sapkowskis books have been translated into Czech, Hungarian, Russian, Lithuanian, German, Spanish, French,
Ukrainian, Portuguese, Finnish, Slovak, Bulgarian, Serbian, English, Italian, Dutch and Swedish. An English
translation of The Last Wish short story collection was
published by Gollancz in 2007.[6] From 2008 the Witcher
saga is published by Gollancz.[7]
The main character of The Witcher (alternative translations: The Hexer and Spellmaker) is Geralt, a mutant
hunter who has been trained since childhood to hunt down
and destroy monsters. Geralt exists in a morally ambiguous universe, yet manages to maintain his own coherent
code of ethics. At the same time cynical and noble, Geralt has been compared to Raymond Chandler's signature
character Philip Marlowe.[3] The world in which these adventures take place is heavily inuenced by Slavic mythology.[4]
Sapkowski has won ve Zajdel Awards, including three
for short stories Mniejsze zo (Lesser Evil) (1990),
Miecz przeznaczenia (Sword of Destiny) (1992) and
W leju po bombie (In a Bomb Crater) (1993), and two
for the novels "Krew elfw" (Blood of Elves) (1994) and
"Narrenturm" (2002). He also won the Spanish Ignotus
Award, best anthology, for The Last Wish in 2003, and for Sapkowski novels on display in a Polish bookstore
