Introduction
TheIntensiveEnglishLanguageInstitute(IELI)isanacademicEnglishasa
SecondLanguage(ESL)programforinternationalundergraduatesangraduateswhohave
beenadmittedtoUtahStateUniversityandforstudentswhowanttostudyonlyEnglish.
IELIdefinesacademicEnglishastheteachingoftheskillareasofreading,writing,
speaking,andlisteningincontentbasedlanguagecoursesforthepurposeofdeveloping
thelanguageabilitynecessarytostudyinamajorfieldofferedbytheuniversity.The
contentcoursesalsoincorporateculturalinformationandstudyskillstoassistthe
studentsinnegotiatingtheuniversitysystem.Fourlevelsofinstructionareoffered.
Studentsineachleveltake18creditsofcourseworkperweek.Level4istheexitlevel,
andcompletionofthislevelsatisfiestheuniversitysrequirementforEnglishlanguage
proficiency.
Inadditiontoassistinginternationalstudentsinacquiringthelanguageand
culturalskillsnecessaryforsuccessfulacademicstudy,IELIservestheOfficeofthe
ProvostbypermittingvisitingscholarsandtheirspousestoauditIELIcourse.The
SchoolofGraduateStudiesemploysIELItoteachtwoteachertrainingworkshopsfor
internationalstudentswhomayservetheirdepartmentsasgraduateinstructorsandto
conductfollowupobservationsofthosestudentswhoareteaching.IELIcooperateswith
theOfficeofInternationalCooperativeEducationandInitiativesbyofferingIELIcourses
attwouniversitiesinChina.IELIservestheMastersofSecondLanguageTeaching
programbysupportingagraduateinstructor,andIELIfacultyareofteninvitedtoteach
coursesinthisprogram.Theseactivitiessupport,inpart,theUniversitysplanfor
internationalizingthecampus.
TenuredandtenuretrackIELIfacultyteachthreesemesters(Fall,Spring,
Summer)foratotalof27creditsoveran11monthperiod.IELIrecruitsandretains
facultywhohaveeitheraMastersDegreeinTeachingEnglishasaSecondLanguageor
acloselyrelatedfieldand/oraPhDinAppliedLinguisticsoracloselyrelatedfield.IELI
facultyhaveateaching,researchorcreativeactivity,andservicerole.
IELIisaccreditedbytheCommissiononEnglishLanguageProgram
Accreditation,whichisrecognizedtheU.S.DepartmentofEducationasareliable
authorityonthequalityofEnglishlanguageprogramsandinstitutions.
Teaching

IELIfacultybelieveexcellenceinteachingisnecessaryforpromotionandtenure.
IELIidentifiesexcellenceinteachingas
havingamethodologyandphilosophythatpresentschallenginggoalsfor
students
anawarenessoftheculturaldifferencesinlearningstylesandapproachesto
learningheldbynonnativespeakersofEnglish

studentevaluationsofteachingthatareconsistentlyhighorshowapatternof
growthovertime
arecordofcommendatorypeerevaluations
proficiencyincurriculumdesignasevidencedbyinstructionalmaterials,
coursedesign,andsyllabi
consulting,presentingpapersorworkshopsatrefereedconferences,and
mentoringgraduatestudentsThesecanbeevidencedbymeanssuchas
ethnographicevaluations,selfevaluationsofteaching,andaconsistent
trajectoryofinvolvementinactivitiesthatsupporttheartofteaching.

Research/CreativeActivity
Promotiontoassociateprofessor
Thecandidatewillbeexpectedtoshowacontinuousrecordofscholarlyactivity
thatmakesapracticalortheoreticalcontributiontothefieldofESL.IELIexpectsthese
scholarlyactivitiestosupportthecandidatesacademicemphasisandtodemonstrate
rigor.Periodsoftimewithoutscholarlyactivitywillneedtocarryastatementof
circumstance.Scholarlyactivitiesmustundergonationalpeerreview,andcaninclude
burarenotlimitedtothefollowing:
evidenceofscholarshipbeingappliedintheclassroom
articlesinprintorelectronicjournals
textbooks
books,orchaptersinbooks
instructionalmaterials
editingjournals
participationinworkshops
presentingpapersatprofessionalconferences
InlinewiththeMLAguidelines,IELIdoesnotdistinguishbetweenprintorelectronic
publicationwhendeterminingthevalueofanactivity.Also,inlinewiththepracticesin
TESOL(TeachingEnglishtoSpeakersofOtherLanguages),thegivingofpapersat
conferencesisanecessarystepinprofessionaldevelopment.
Service
Promotiontoassociateprofessor
IELIexpectsthecandidatetogivediverseservicetotheIELIprogramandtothe
professionasprimaryserviceactivitiesduringthisperiodinthecandidatescareer.
ServicetoIELImayincludeseveralorallofthefollowing:
participatingonthecurriculumcommittee
servingasasponsorfortheIELISA(IELIstudentorganization)
monitoringandgradingtheplacementexam
mentoringthegraduateinstructor
servingonthetextbookselectioncommittee

ThenewlyemployedcandidateusuallybeginsprofessionalserviceinIntermountain
TESOL.IELIexpectsthecandidatetomaintainmembershipinprofessional
organizationsandserveintheseorganizationsaswellasservingthecollegeandthe
university.
