FROM THE DESK OF

THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL
The CHS Newsletter had been discontinued for a while during
the previous administration. We are now reviving it since we
feel it is our duty and our pleasure to inform the public about
the activities of the centre.
Our Centre has been functioning under severe limitations. The
original grand plan of the Centre formulated in the time of late
Sri T. M. Jacob as Minister for Cultural Affairs (2004) had
envisaged a wide range of activities and established a
Governing Body, an Academic Council and a Board of
Management in such a way that it was clearly intended to be
the most important cultural centre in Kerala. Somehow or other,
subsequent authorities missed this significance. of the Centre
for Heritage Studies.
Soon after we took up the responsibility of the CHS, we prepared
a plan for development in three parts consisting of a village
survey, a specified heritage library and a publication scheme.
These are essential for the Centre to justify its name. For the
last two years, we have been representing these needs to the
authorities, but even the minimum grant required for starting
the work has not yet been sanctioned. We still hope that it will
be done.
Meanwhile, we have set apart a small amount for starting the
work and prepared the ground by contacting scholars and
institutions. The spade work is done. The details of the work are
given in this news letter. The scope of the work shall be expanded
as soon as the required funds are sanctioned.
We request all scholars and students who are interested in the
great cultural heritage of our country to support us and
co-operate with us in this endevour. Some aspects of cultural
heritage are perishable. They will be lost forever unless
immediate steps are taken for documentation and
conservation under expert care. Hence the urgency and the
need for all - round co-operation.

It is believed that

four centres of the State Archives are to be scientifically
protected. The Director of Archives, Sri J. Rejikumar and his
team has been utilising the expertise of our students being
trained in conservation. Students from the Centre who
completed courses in Archaeology, Conservation and Archival
Studies in the four centres of the Archives, Department of
Culture, Govt. of Kerala have been involved in this programme.
The project is for a period of one and a half years and the cost
of implementation is Rs 50 lakh.
Recently the CHS launched a conservation programme in the
laboratory of the institution. The Zamorins Palace records,
brought to light by Dr. N.M. Nampoothiri in 1978 and kept at
the Vallathol Vidya Peedom, are being taken up in the new stage
of archival conservation. The famous Guruvayoor Satyagraha
records are of prime importance. This conservation work has
begun in our academic block.
The new Director of Archaeology, Dr Premkumar has given all
assistance in setting up a conservation laboratory in the
academic block. We hope to undertake the conservation of
archaeological artefacts and paintings with our own team of
experts. The heritage survey, heritage library and conservation
and publication of heritage materials are interrelated and are
being taken up simultaneously.
We have sent 15 students this year for internship of
conservation programme as per the request of C-dit authorities.
They have been working with the survey team at Vazhuthacaud,
Thiruvananthapuram.

HERITAGE SURVEY PROJECT

As part of
village-to-village survey,
the preliminary
works have
already started.
Besides, committees
have been constituted
at different levels
and the Centre has
now launched
a pilot survey
collaborating
with higher education
centres in Kuttanadu Taluk
in Alleppy district.

A concrete and comprehensive idea of Kerala heritage can be

formulated only through a village-to-village survey of tangible
and intangible heritage signifiers. The Centre had taken a
decision to implement this on February 2012. The Centre has
formulated an implementation plan for a grassroots-level
survey with the participation of educational institutions,
panchayath authorities, research scholars and various social
groups interested in heritage studies. The survey will be based
on participatory research, where involvement of academicians
and local people will be effectively utilised. This kind of survey
will produce abundant data (visual, written and oral) for indepth studies of Kerala heritage and peoples history of Kerala.
The project has been started by November 2013. When
necessary funds are released for the project from the
Government of Kerala, the centre proposes to establish more
than ten model/regional centres to comb the villages for
documentation.
As part of village-to-village survey, the preliminary works have
already started. Besides, committees have been constituted at
different levels and the Centre has now launched a pilot survey
collaborating with higher education centres in Kuttanadu Taluk
in Alleppy district. The centre proposes to prepare a scientific
model of village heritage documentation (heritage register) in
this pilot survey. This will help us to work scientifically in all the
villages of Kerala.
The academic council of the centre nominated Dr N.M.
Nampoothiri as the convener of the project. The Board of
Management nominated Dr. N.M. Nampoothiri and P.K. Gopi as
the Principal Investigator and Co-ordinator respectively.

Dr. N. M. Nampoothiri,
eminent academic and historian,
has taken charge as
the new Dean of Academic
Affairs, CHS.
The Director-General, in his letter
to the cultural affairs (B)
Department of the
Government of Kerala had
stated earlier that though
such a post had been
envisaged in the
Memorandum of Association
of the Centre, it had not been
created thus far. He had further
stressed that such a post was
essential for carrying
out the academic programmes
of the Centre, especially
in view of the auditor's
comment "no academic
programme has been conducted
at the centre". In his deanship
Dr. Nampoothiri has initiated a
series of innovative ventures,
including the Kerala
Heritage Survey.
Several publications
including this newsletter are the
outcome of his planning with a
long-term perspective.
