PROJECT ON
HERITAGE SURVEY
Sandeep
K. Varma and
Gokul Vinayan,
in their work
on the Fauna
of Hill Palace,
provide a quick
scan of the
throbbing
environs of the
Kunnummel
Kottaram.
Jenee Peter
of the UC College,
Aluva and
P.K. Gopi of the
CHS have
put their wisdom
together
to explore
the church
mural art of Kerala.
P. K. Gopi
enunciates
the history of
the Hill Palace
in the backdrop
of the erstwhile
royal family
of Kochi,
focusing on the
Thripunithura
temple town.
Easwaran
Puthiyillam
provides a valuable
tool for the
beginners
in archival studies
through his work.
He is a Senior
Faculty of the CHS.
This guide
book is a pictorial
delineation
of the Hill Palace
complex which
helps visitors
to grasp the
essential features
of this 52 -acre
spread of
greenery which
houses a
load of memories.
Dr C. M. Neelakandhan
provides a
scholarly account
of the rich Sanskrit
tradition of
Thripunithura,
which could
very well have been
the capital city
of the rulers of Kochi
once -upon- a- time.

Rock art of
the world
is a fascinating
saga of human
endeavour
to translate
his aesthetic
sensitivity
into reality.
It is believed that
mans awareness
of the world around
came through his primeval
sense of sight and sound.
These two senses
have stimulated
artists expressions
visual and aural
in the prehistoric past
as well as in the
contemporary cultures.
The CHS is
hosting this show
in the background of
the rock art findings
at Thovari, Edakkal
and Marayoor.
The CHS is also
undertaking
a segmental study of
the Marayoor rock art.
The CHS and the UC College Aluva are hosting a Rock Art
Exhibition in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National
Centre for the Arts, New Delhi in October at the Hill Palace,
Tripunithura. The present exposition The World of Rock Art is
culled out from the Exhibition on Rock Art organised during
the International Rock Art Conference, at the Indira Gandhi
National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi from 6
December, 2012 to 23 January, 2013. After getting a good
feedback from a cross- section of the society comprising
scholars, mediapersons, public servants, and general public, it
was decided to take the exhibition to the other parts of the
country as circulating/mobile exhibition to spread awareness
among schoolchildren, college and university students and
general public. The exhibition was earlier hosted at Banaras
Hindu University, Varanasi, (5 to 28 March, 2013) then in
Srimanta Sankardeva Kalashetra (SSK), Guwahati (12 April to 3
May, 2013), at Odisha State Museum, Bhubaneswar (18th May
to 23rd June, 2013), at Department of History, Pondicherry
University, Puducherry (25th July to 25 August, 2013) and at
National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Bengaluru, Karnataka
(3 December, 2013 -3 January, 2014).
The CHS is hosting this show in the background of the rock
art findings at Thovari, Edakkal and Marayoor. The CHS is also
undertaking a segmental study of the Marayoor rock art.

Dr. N. M. Nampoothiri,
eminent academic and historian,
has taken charge as
the new Dean of Academic
Affairs, CHS.
The Director-General, in his letter
to the cultural affairs (B)
Department of the
Government of Kerala had
stated earlier that though
such a post had been
envisaged in the
Memorandum of Association
of the Centre, it had not been
created thus far. He had further
stressed that such a post was
essential for carrying
out the academic programmes
of the Centre, especially
in view of the auditor's
comment "no academic
programme has been conducted
at the centre". In his deanship
Dr. Nampoothiri has initiated a
series of innovative ventures,
including the Kerala
Heritage Survey.
Several publications
including this newsletter are the
outcome of his planning with a
long-term perspective.
