WELCOME TO FUR RONDY!

W
elcome to the 80th year of Fur Rondy fun! This is a very special year, not only
for Fur Rondy but also for Anchorage – we’re celebrating our 100th anniversary!
As an official Anchorage Centennial event, Fur Rondy brings the history and
character of our region while also giving Alaskans relief from months of cabin fever.
One goal of the Anchorage Centennial celebration is to look at our past as a city and see where we’ve
come. Fur Rondy is a terrific example of how our city has changed over the years. In 1935, the festival was
simply a place for fur trappers to sell their winter bounty. Eighty years later, Fur Rondy has transformed
into what was recently named the number one winter carnival in the world! It just goes to show how far
we’ve come, Anchorage is a more vibrant and exciting city than ever before. I encourage everyone to get
out and participate in this wonderful celebration of life in Alaska.
Of course, locals aren’t the only ones celebrating. Visitors from around the world take part every
year. Where else can you run with the reindeer, participate in an organized snowball fight and watch
world-class dog mushing events, all in a city’s downtown? These are just a handful of the many activities
available during the festival. I hope you’ll take advantage of everything Fur Rondy and Anchorage have
to offer during this exciting time!
Dan Sullivan I know Fur Rondy wouldn’t be possible without the support of many residents, businesses and
Mayor, Municipality of Anchorage volunteers. Thank you to everyone who works hard to make this event a success. Let’s Rondy!

FROM THE RONDY PRESIDENT

O N D Y ON
R ! THANK
YOU
W
elcome to the 80th Year of Fur Rondy!
The Fur Rendezvous Festival is a significant part of the history
and tradition of Anchorage. Rondy’s humble beginnings started
in 1935 as a 3 day festival featuring skiing, hockey, basketball and a children’s
sled dog race. Today’s 10 day Festival features over a hundred events, such
as The World Championship Sled Dog Races, Snow Sculpture’s, Grand
Parade, Melodrama, Great Alaska Talent Competition and the hilariously
fun Running of the Reindeer.
This year, Rondy celebrates two new events, The Scotty Gomez
Foundation’s 3 day Pond Hockey Tournament and the Rondy DASH, a
scavenger hunt held in downtown Anchorage. Please use the schedule in
this guide to plan your 10 days of fun!
Rondy’s continued success wouldn’t be possible, if it wasn’t for our generous Thank you to BP for
community partners, sponsors, volunteers and Rondy Revelers that support us supporting our community
year after year by purchasing Rondy Pins, merchandise and memberships.

2015 FUR RENDEZVOUS WORLD

Follow the race on KHAR!

Overview
Begun in 1946 as part of Fur Rondy, the World Championship
Sled Dog Races have become a cornerstone event of the festival.
Mushers from all over Alaska, the nation, and the world
participate for the title of fastest sprint mushing team. The race is
held over three days; the fastest total time recorded wins.

Countless people and entities support this race: The Municipality

of Anchorage supplies police officers, snow fencing, and snow
placement and removal for the street portion. The Alaskan Sled
Dog & Racing Association, or ASDRA, grooms and sets snow
fencing for the other 21 miles of trails. Fur Rondy raises the purse 6:00pm, Tuesday, February 24th
and promotes the race. ASDRA volunteers manage and operate
the race. Sponsors also support the race. Musher’s Bib Draw

Be a Good Spectator
• Find a good viewpoint behind the trail edge.
• Teams leave at one or two minute intervals and often
are closely spaced. Faster teams may have even
passed a competitor.
• Look for dogs running well with their heads and tails
down showing concentration on their effort. Tug lines will
be tight. Be aware that sudden movements or flashbulbs
may startle dogs and break their concentration. You will
see the head and tail go up if this occurs.
• Mushers will only ask for help if needed. Dogs often are shy
of unfamiliar people.
• Getting entangled in a dog team can be very hazardous for you
and the dogs.
• A dog team traveling at up to 20mph takes up to 50 feet to come to
SPECIAL THANKS TO
a stop.
• Sled dogs run very quietly. You may not know they are coming until
you hear, “Trail!” or worse, you are entangled in the lines because
the musher could not see around a corner.
• Your pet dog will not enjoy watching sled dog racing events. A fast
moving team will frighten most dogs. They also are a distraction to
the racing or training dog team. Do not bring your family pets to dog
mushing events.

COLLECTOR PIN & BUTTON ARTISTS
About Rondy Pins and Buttons
A tradition since the early days of Rondy, the Fur Rondy collector pins are an integral part of Rondy. Representing the spirit
of the festival and celebration of the ten days of Rondy, these pins are worn across the globe. Artists compete to design the
official pin and local students do the same in a booster button contest. These pins become collector’s items.

2015 Collaborative
Pin Design of the
Official Rondy Pin
As 2015 marks the Centennial of Anchorage and the 80th
Anniversary of Fur Rendezvous, organizers of each event
thought what better way to celebrate this very special occasion
and collaborated on a collector pin design that showcases these
monumental events.

2014 Booster Button

Designer: Ina Allen
The historic 80th Anniversary of Rondy is one for
the ages! This booster button commemorates the
2015 year with Alaska’s mushing roots in the fun
design pictured here. Ina is 11 years old and attends
6th grade at Inlet View Elementary. She knew about
the Booster Button Contest from her teacher who
assigned it as a homework assignment. Ina was born
in Anchorage and enjoys gymnastics, rock climbing
and skiing. She plays the flute and the saxophone.
The best part of the Fur Rondy is the carnival and
sled dog races, which her design illustrates.

Come by the Rondy shop, or visit www.furrondy.net
