elcome to the 80th year of Fur Rondy fun! This is a very special year, not only
for Fur Rondy but also for Anchorage – we’re celebrating our 100th anniversary!
As an official Anchorage Centennial event, Fur Rondy brings the history and
character of our region while also giving Alaskans relief from months of cabin fever.
One goal of the Anchorage Centennial celebration is to look at our past as a city and see where we’ve
come. Fur Rondy is a terrific example of how our city has changed over the years. In 1935, the festival was
simply a place for fur trappers to sell their winter bounty. Eighty years later, Fur Rondy has transformed
into what was recently named the number one winter carnival in the world! It just goes to show how far
we’ve come, Anchorage is a more vibrant and exciting city than ever before. I encourage everyone to get
out and participate in this wonderful celebration of life in Alaska.
Of course, locals aren’t the only ones celebrating. Visitors from around the world take part every
year. Where else can you run with the reindeer, participate in an organized snowball fight and watch
world-class dog mushing events, all in a city’s downtown? These are just a handful of the many activities
available during the festival. I hope you’ll take advantage of everything Fur Rondy and Anchorage have
to offer during this exciting time!
Dan Sullivan I know Fur Rondy wouldn’t be possible without the support of many residents, businesses and
Mayor, Municipality of Anchorage volunteers. Thank you to everyone who works hard to make this event a success. Let’s Rondy!

elcome to the 80th Year of Fur Rondy!
The Fur Rendezvous Festival is a significant part of the history
and tradition of Anchorage. Rondy’s humble beginnings started
in 1935 as a 3 day festival featuring skiing, hockey, basketball and a children’s
sled dog race. Today’s 10 day Festival features over a hundred events, such
as The World Championship Sled Dog Races, Snow Sculpture’s, Grand
Parade, Melodrama, Great Alaska Talent Competition and the hilariously
fun Running of the Reindeer.
This year, Rondy celebrates two new events, The Scotty Gomez
Foundation’s 3 day Pond Hockey Tournament and the Rondy DASH, a
scavenger hunt held in downtown Anchorage. Please use the schedule in
this guide to plan your 10 days of fun!
Rondy’s continued success wouldn’t be possible, if it wasn’t for our generous Thank you to BP for
community partners, sponsors, volunteers and Rondy Revelers that support us supporting our community
year after year by purchasing Rondy Pins, merchandise and memberships.

Be a Good Spectator
• Find a good viewpoint behind the trail edge.
• Teams leave at one or two minute intervals and often
are closely spaced. Faster teams may have even
passed a competitor.
• Look for dogs running well with their heads and tails
down showing concentration on their effort. Tug lines will
be tight. Be aware that sudden movements or flashbulbs
may startle dogs and break their concentration. You will
see the head and tail go up if this occurs.
• Mushers will only ask for help if needed. Dogs often are shy
of unfamiliar people.
• Getting entangled in a dog team can be very hazardous for you
and the dogs.
• A dog team traveling at up to 20mph takes up to 50 feet to come to

a stop.
• Sled dogs run very quietly. You may not know they are coming until
you hear, “Trail!” or worse, you are entangled in the lines because
the musher could not see around a corner.
• Your pet dog will not enjoy watching sled dog racing events. A fast
moving team will frighten most dogs. They also are a distraction to
the racing or training dog team. Do not bring your family pets to dog
mushing events.
