FACE OUT & Story Circle: Crossing Broadway by Robert W. Snyder Crossing Broadway: Washington
Heights and the Promise of New York City by Robert W. Snyder, is a book about the civic and social
history of Washington Heights from the 1930s to (nearly) the present. In a chapter that begins at the
dawn of integration, he examines pivotal moments in the histories of George Washington High School,
PS 187, and the community school board to explore the triumphs and challenges that activists,
principals, teachers, and students have confronted in our neighborhood's schools. On February 19th at
Word Up, Robert will read a short excerpt from his book and then open up a discussion about education
uptown in the form of a story circle. Bring and share your own stories about going to school in

NYC Prevention Resource Center Brown Bag Series / Session 1: Photovoice Pack your lunch and
come to the NYC PRCs monthly mini-trainings that will cover a variety of topics. Session 2 will be 90
minutes devoted to Photovoice. Photovoice is a community-based research tool that integrates
photography and discussion to examine issues from the perspective of resident experts aka the people
that live there. The essentials of photovoice will be covered and examples will be shown. Additional
sessions will cover strategic prevention framework (assessment & capacity; planning & logic models;
implementation & evaluation) and sustainability, and will be held at the same time, usually on the 3 rd

2015 Uptown ArtStroll Poster Contest The central theme is How do we get uptown? Take the
___ uptown. (i.e. train, bus, etc.). The image should include elements of uptowns diverse arts and
cultural scene and must include Uptown Arts Stroll in the design. Artist must be a Washington
Heights-Inwood or West Harlem resident (West 135th W. 220th Street); artist may submit only one
image for consideration. A panel of distinguished judges, drawn from the local arts community, will
select the finalists. Consideration will be given to eye-catching original and unpublished images
that reflect the elements identified above. Selected finalists agree to bring a hard copy of the
image (do not include artists name), on foam or paperboard, 24 x 18, to exhibit at the NoMAA
Artists Salon on Monday, March 16th at 809 Restaurant, 112 Dyckman Street, where the winning
image will be selected by community vote. Grand Prize winner will receive a $500 honorarium and

Community Meeting on Police-Community Relations Last year, the country witnessed events that
shook the foundation of our police-community relations. From Ferguson to New York, we were left with
questions on how to bring about the changes necessary to improve interactions between officers and
our communities. While the flash-points that drove this issue into the public eye have subsided, we
must continue to seek ways to improve these community bonds, lest we allow injustices to go
unaddressed. Please join the Barack Obama Democratic Club for this important discussion on the
current conditions of police-community relations in our community and our city with a focus on

Hearing on Ensuring English Language Learners Receive Appropriate Educational Services and Res. 388
The City Councils Education Committee will hold an oversight hearing on Ensuring English Language
Learners Receive Appropriate Educational Services as well as to consider Res. 388. This hearing would
examine the current supports and services for ELLs as well as the impact of implementation of the new
Common Core standards on ELL students. We invite members of Community Education Councils,
parents, students, educators, advocates, and all other stakeholders and interested members of the
public to testify at this hearing. Testimony will be limited to 2-3 minutes per person to allow as many as
possible to testify. Although the hearing starts at 1pm, the Administration (Department of Education), as

Inwoods Changing Forest: Tree Inventory, Social and Ecological Assessment A partnership among the
Natural Areas Conservancy, NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, and the USDA Forest Service.
Speakers from all three will present preliminary results from the Inwood Hill Park project at the Payson
Center. The presentation will include maps and measurements on the trees that have been surveyed for
the project thus far, as well as an overview of social and ecological data collection citywide, with an
emphasis on Inwood Hill Park's unique natural areas. In addition, preliminary data from the ongoing

Park West Policy Forum February Meeting: Housing Daniel Marks-Cohen, Vice President Housing
Partnership Development Corporation, will present the New Broadway Plan which proposes to rezone
portions of Broadway from W. 125th to W. 155th Streets to build 3,000 units of new housing in West
Harlem. With mandatory inclusionary housing, 50% or 1,500 apartments would be permanently
affordable. When completed, this would be the largest creation of affordable housing in Manhattan

Harassment in the Halls: A Conversation About Teen Sexual Harassment and Violence Join us in honor
of Teen Violence Awareness Month to explore the persistent problem and learn how some amazing
advocates are jumping in to stop it! The developers and producers of Slut, Katie Cappiello and Meg
McInerney, alongside youth organizers and activists Jennifer Loubriel and Imade Ojo from Girls for
Gender Equity and Destiny Mabry from Day One come together for an honest conversation about the
everyday acceptance of violence in schools that should be anything but "normal." Research shows that
approximately 85% of girls and 76% of boys report sexual harassment as a part of life at school, and 20%
of adolescent girls experience dating violence. Teens, parents, teachers, and advocates are welcome to

The R3 (Real Rent Reform) Coalition is a city-wide coalition fighting to improve the rent laws, has begun
having its monthly meetings in different parts of the city. This year is a big one for tenants since the rent

crisis is worse than ever and we need put massive pressure on the legislature and the governor. The
January meeting will be in Northern Manhattan, since Northern Manhattan has a huge percentage of
rent-regulated tenants. 1199 is supporting this effort as well. We would like to have as major a
participation as possible. So far, the Barack Obama Democratic Club, Riverside Edgecombe
Neighborhood Association (RENA), Mirabel Sisters, and Community Boards 9 & 12, will be co-sponsoring
the meeting together with the R3 Coalition. We need to all unite, since the Republicans are in control of
the Senate, we need a huge effort to improve the rent laws! The meeting will be held at 99 Fort

Meet Us at La Galeria Join us for a discussion on negritud/blackness in the Dominican Republic and the
Diaspora. Using articles, social media, and other resources, we will discuss what it means to be black in
the Dominican Republic and the Diaspora. La Galera is the place in which family, neighbors, and guests
gather to discuss everything from the latest chisme to social and political issues. It is the place where
dialogue and debate are welcomed and encouraged. Galeras are not exclusive to a particular class;
some are built-in, others are an impromptu creation. We are recreating galeras to provoke

Malcolm X Rock Those Reads Literacy Across Harlem Day is a day on which we ask Harlemites to carry
reading materials proudly and publicly as an example to all of the power of reading. This month we will
remember Malcolm X, a voracious reader who used both his book knowledge and his street knowledge
to fight for justice here in Harlem and beyond. Community members young and old will gather in front
of the Hotel Theresa (7th Ave. between W. 124/125th Streets), and will take turns reading their favorite
passages from The Autobiography of Malcolm X. In addition, we're asking folks to stop by during that 90minute block to donate a new or gently used copy of The Autobiography, which we will pass on to teens

Albany Lobby Day for Immigration Reform The New York Immigration Colaition (NYIC) invites you to

Parent Engagement Opportunity: 2015 Community Education Council Elections The Community and
Citywide Education Councils provide parents a voice in public education and an opportunity to make a
grassroots-level impact on education policy. Elections take place every two years, and this year, the DOE

Introduction to Community Based Participatory Research (Free Course) As part of the mission of the
Columbia University Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research to foster community engaged
research between academic and community stakeholders, the Community Engagement Core Resource
(CECR) offers an introductory course on Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR). The course is
open to Columbia University faculty and high level administrators of community and faith-based
organizations in northern Manhattan. Participants will gain an appreciation of all the components
involved in CBPR and sound health research through co-learning and practicing various parts of the
research process in community-academic partner pairs. These partnership pairs will develop a research
proposal with a CBPR approach for funding consideration by the Irving Institute. Topics covered include:
definitions of community, issues of power and control, engagement and participation, the appropriate
use of qualitative and quantitative methods, and research design. The course is free to all admitted
participants. Applicants must: hold the title of Executive Director, Assistant Executive Director, or other
high level administrator at an organization serving northern Manhattan (Harlem, Washington Heights,
Inwood); commit to attend all 10 class sessions and stay for the entire duration of the class session; and
commit to submitting a proposal for pilot funding with an academic partner. Classes will be held at
Columbia Community Partnership for Health, 390 Ft. Washington Ave. , on Tuesday afternoons from

The Spring 2015 NYPD Citizen's Police Academy Course shares training and tactics used by the NYPD,
and fosters working relationships with the NYPD. This is a 14 week (1x/week) training at the Police
Academy (235 E. 20th St., between 2nd & 3rd Avenues) taught by NYPD Instructors. Transportation will be
provided every Tuesday at 5pm from the 34th Precinct to the Academy and at 9pm from the Academy to

4th Thespis Theater Festival/Competition 2015 All Genres of shows are welcome. If your show has
already had a run (in theaters or in other festivals) you can still participate, but only with a completely
new cast and crew. This is a long festival (12 weeks) that allows all shows prime performance times, the
opportunity for all cast and crew members to attend every show in the festival for free; special

professional guidance for playwrights staging their first show to help them make their performance a
success; knowledgeable staff; a professional lighting (42 lights) and sound system; a free tutorial on how
to use the projections system and expert technical guidance. All plays get a five-hour tech rehearsal, free
box office management/venue handling during performances, storage for your props and set pieces
during the length of your run, free use of props and set pieces owned by the theater (an incredible
collection- not just chairs and rehearsal blocks, but real furniture), and an extremely low participation
fee. Theres a piano available to all during rehearsals/performances , and a wonderful Award Ceremony
at the end of the festival. NO FEES REQUIRED TO SUBMIT YOUR PLAY. Prizes for Best Play ($3,500); Best

Call for Art (Ongoing): Tribute to the Disappeared: an art project in homage to victims of violence and
injustice around the globe. We have images from over 200 international artists and we invite everyone
to participate in this important project by sending images on the theme, "Tribute to the Disappeared,"
and related themes, such as solidarity, peace/war, human rights, loss and hope, etc. New and existing

Clare Weiss Emerging Artist Award We are excited to announce that the 2015 award will be taking
place at Court Square Park in Long Island City, Queens! The $10,000 award is granted to one emerging
artist who submits the most compelling proposal for an outdoor sculpture in Court Square. The location
changes annually and is determined based on the sites visibility and proximity within a neighborhood

Inwood Film Festival Announcing the first annual Inwood Film Festival! Sponsored by the Indian Road

2015 DDC High School & College Summer Internship Programs The NYC Department of Design &
Construction (DDC) is looking to create a pipeline program that will introduce students from middle
school through high school and college to careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering,
Architecture/Art, and Mathematics (STEAM). We will be using DDC projects for holistic educational
programming and to develop curriculum, internships, job readiness programs and mentorships. This
summer, DDC will be running two internship programs designed for high school and college students

Above the Bridge: Calling All Writers Our February Writers Cafe was an extraordinary evening! And we
think the March one will be, too. The theme for the month is "On the Verge." As always, interpret it as
you will. Above the Bridge is a playground for writers. It is a place to encourage and cultivate
neighborhood writers and provide them with an audience for their work. Here's How It Works: a theme
is chosen for each month. Writers may submit five minutes of material of any genre or style (poetry,
plays, fiction, non-fiction, blogs, etc.) that reflect the month's theme. Pieces will be chosen by the Above
the Bridge selection team to be read by the author at the next reading series. There will be a short
rehearsal immediately prior to the event. Writers must live in Washington Heights or Inwood. Please
attach your name, address and phone number with your submission. Pieces should be no longer than 5
minutes, but all work will be considered. You do not have to be a professional writer. New and existing

Fund for Jewish Child Survivors A new fund has been negotiated by the Claims Conference with the
German government to provide reparations exclusively to Jewish Child Survivors of the Holocaust.
Survivors who were born January 1, 1928 or later, and were in concentration camps, ghettos, or for at
least 6 months under Nazi occupation in hiding or under false identity, will be eligible to receive a onetime payment of approx. $2,500. This fund became operational on January 1, 2015. Many Survivors will
receive the application in the mail. If you have not received an application in the mail by the end of
January, and you believe you are eligible, please contact The Jewish Community Council of Washington

Dolphin Park The Port Authority is currently in the process of renovating Dolphin Park located on Cabrini
Boulevard. To date, we have spent $265,000 of the anticipated total project cost of $550,000. During the
past few months, we have installed playground equipment, benches on Cabrini Boulevard, wood fiber
surface for play equipment, and have relocated the play elephant. As it gets warmer, play surfaces and
bluestone pavement will be installed as well. Tentative start date is Monday, March 2nd. Weather
permitting, the contractor will try to improve schedule and start earlier. The renovations are scheduled
to conclude in June of 2015.
Salute the Arts Initiative This program WNYC and WQXR Radio provides free on-air announcements and
website promotion to NYC cultural groups with annual marketing budget under $500,000 and annual
operating budget under $1 million. Organizations must be 501(c)(3). For more info people would
