MATERIALS HAZARD RATING CODE
AmSafe Inc. uses the National Fire Protection Association system to identify the different levels of hazards
that are caused by the use of a given material. A Hazard Code identifies three effects of a material on a
person: health (eat, drink, touch, and breathe), fire (when and how it burns), and reactivity (chemical
explosions). Also, each material is given a storage group for safety.
Each code has three numbers and one letter (for example, 130D) as shown in the Hazard Code symbol
below. The three numbers show the hazard levels for health, fire, and reactivity, in that sequence. The range
of each number is 0 to 4. The higher the number, the more dangerous the hazard. You must be careful with
any material that has a Hazard Code with a 2, 3, or 4. The one letter (A through E) in the code identifies a
specific storage group that is applicable for the material.
If applicable, the materials used for the procedures in this manual are given a Hazard Code. Get specific data
on a material from the data sheet supplied by the manufacturer of the material.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1.

General
This manual covers the two differing versions of the aircraft seat belt combination FAG-9 used by cabin
crews as a safety belt.
The aircraft seat belt combination FAG-9 will restrain the seat belt occupant safely in his seat in all flight
attitudes, particularly in the event of a crash landing.
The lap belt can not only be used in conjunction with the shoulder strap, but may also be used
separately.
The two aircraft seat belt combinations FAG-9 comprise the following versions:
A. 1 automatic lap belt, Bagu FAG-9C and
2 automatic shoulder straps, Schugu FAG-9A
The attachment fittings used for the Bagu FAG-9C and Schugu FAG 9A are automatic inertia reels
AGB-8C which are fitted to the end of each belt portion. The belt portions are fastened by means of
a 2-point buckle assembly MS-1D.
B. 1 lap belt, Bagu FAG-9D and
2 automatic shoulder straps, Schugu FAG-9D
The lap belt Bagu FAG-9D can be supplied with different fittings to suit the prevailing installation
conditions.
Seat attachment of the shoulder straps Schugu FAG-9D is by means of the automatic inertia reel
AGB-8C. The belt portions are fastened by means of lugs inserted into a central rotary buckle.

Functioning
A.

Aircraft Seat Belt Combination Comprising Bagu FAG-9C and Schugu FAG-9A
Due to the automatic locking action of the inertia reels, the aircraft seat belt combination FAG-9,
irrespective of the prevailing flight conditions, will safely restrain the occupant in his seat. As soon
as the lap belt and shoulder straps are subjected to forward acceleration forces of at least 0.5 g
and 1.5 g respectively, the inertia reels will automatically block any movement of the belts, thus
preventing the body of the seat occupant from being thrown forward.
As long as the acceleration forces do not reach the above values, the aircraft seat belt
combination allows unrestricted normal movement of the seat occupant.
When the seat belt combination is unfastened, both shoulder straps and lap belts are rolled up by
their respective automatic inertia reels until only the lugs project from the recesses in the backrest.

B.

Aircraft Seat Belt Combination Comprising Bagu FAG-9D and Schugu FAG-9D
The aircraft seat belt combination FAG-9D, irrespective of the prevailing flight conditions, will
safely restrain the occupant in his seat. As soon as the shoulder straps are subjected to forward
acceleration forces of at least 1.5 g, the inertia reels will automatically block any movement of the
straps, thus preventing the body of the seat occupant from being thrown forward.
As long as the acceleration forces do not reach the above value, the automatic shoulder straps
allow unrestricted normal movement of the seat occupant.
When the seat belt combination is unfastened, both shoulder straps are rolled up by their
respective automatic inertia reels until only the lugs project from the recesses in the backrest.

The automatic inertia reels, acting as attachment fittings for the two lap belt portions and
shoulder straps, are mounted on the seat in accordance with the installation instructions
supplied by the seat manufacturer. The lap belt portion carrying the buckle MS-1 is to be
installed on the left-hand side seen from the seated position. To ensure correct installation
and operation the shoulder straps are marked R and L.
Following installation all belt portions are to be subjected to a functional check observing
the sequence given below:
CAUTION:

DO NOT ALLOW THE STRAPS TO BE WOUND UP UNRESTRAINED

(a)

When pulled slowly and uniformly, all belt portions must permit full extension without
any locking action occurring.
When released, all belt portions must be fully retracted.

(b)

When a belt portion is withdrawn with a sudden jerk, the inertia reel must block the
movement of the belt at any point along its full length. When releasing the belt, the
locking action must automatically be released.

(c)

The lug of the lap belt is to be inserted into the buckle MS-1. The correct locking
action of the buckle is to be checked by applying tension to the lug ensuring that the
lug is securely held by the latch block of the buckle.

In the seated position grasp the rotary buckle with one hand and position it over the center
of the body. Using the other hand bring over the lug of the opposite lap belt and insert the
lug in the lateral slot of the rotary buckle. Adjust the length of the lap belt portions by
pulling at the free belt ends ensuring that the rotary buckle takes up a ventral position and
that the lap belts pass over the pelvis.
Lengthening of the lap belt portions is by lifting the tongue on the sliding buckle while
simultaneously pulling on the belt.
Withdraw the shoulder straps from the inertia reels and insert the lugs in the upper slots of
the rotary buckle between the rotary disc and the release plate.
(3) Release
CAUTION: DO NOT ALLOW THE STRAPS TO BE WOUND UP UNRESTRAINED.

Inspection for Continued or Renewed Airworthiness

A. General
Inspection of the restraint system is in accordance with the on condition principle and is governed
by an inspection and servicing schedule. The restraint system may remain in service until defects
are found upon inspection or in use.
As a minimum, AmSafe recommends a yearly inspection of the restraint. system. The continued
use of the restraint system is subject to the routine inspection interval of the airframe by conducting
a functional inspection check of the restraint system in accordance with the procedures listed in the
TESTING AND FAULT ISOLATION and CHECK sections of this CMM. The service life of the
restraint system is subject to the periodic inspection of the restraint system while in service and
depends on the service environment in which it is used and the degree of use over the installation
period. This subsequently places the responsibility for the continued airworthiness of the restraint
on the installer/operator since the flight times, usage, and operating environment will vary by
operator. The frequency of the inspection interval should be adjusted appropriately by the
installer/operator to ensure the continued airworthiness of the restraint. If the restraint is no longer
usable based on the inspection for continued or renewed airworthiness, itthe restraint system must
be discarded or returned to AmSafe or an AmSafe approved repair station for overhaul/repair.
(1)

Inspection Intervals:
-

Concurrently with the periodic aircraft inspection, but not later than every 42 months,
plus an admissible tolerance of 6 months.

After repairs or overhaul.

After modifications requiring qualification testing.

When the equipment is transferred to another owner or for any special reason.

When the equipment has been overstressed, or if overstress is suspected.

Concurrently with the aircraft inspection.

After removal from storage.
