Q.No. 2. Explain in detail Tensile Strength test on mild steel specimen with neat sketch of stress strain
graph.
Q.No. 3. Derive the relation between E (Modulus of Elasticity), G (Modulus of Rigidity), K (Bulk
Modulus) and find K for a material with K=120 GPa and G=45 GPa.

Q.No. 5. (01) A steel rod of cross sectional area 2000 mm2 and two brass rods of C/S area 1000 mm2
each together support a load of 12 kN as shown in Fig (1) with all dimensions in mm.
ESTEEL 2 105 MPa and E BRASS 1 105 MPa . Determine the stresses developed in steel and brass
and also find the ratio of load taken by steel bar to each brass bar.
(02) A rigid square plate 1m 1m is supported over four legs A,B,C & D. a load W is applied at
point K as shown in fig (2). Determine the compressive force in each leg if the cross sectional area
of each leg is 20 mm2and W=1000 kN, What are the stresses in each leg?
(03) A rectangular tapered steel bar tapering from a section 30 mm 20 mm to 12 mm 10 mm area
over an axial length of 100 mm is shown in fig (3). It is subjected to an axial force P. If the
maximum stress is not exceeded 100 MPa , what is the value of P? If E= 210 GPa , what is the
change in the length of the bar?
(04) A 1M long bar is rigidly held between two supports as shown in fig (4) What is the value of P
if the stress in portion BC is 40 MPa and what is the stress developed in portion AB?

(05) A stepped bar ABCD has a length of 2.25 M with the C/S area of 4, 3 and 2 cm2 respectively, as
shown in fig (5). If the normal stress of the largest magnitude in the stepped bar is not to exceed 80
MPa, determine the magnitude of force F. If E=200 GPa, What is the displacement of point D?

(01) A reinforced concrete column 400 mm 400 mm is provided with 8 bars of 22 mm diameter. Find the
safe axial load on the column if the maximum stress in the concrete is limited to 4 N/mm2.

(02) A compound tube consist of steel tube of 200 mm internal diameter and 10 mm thickness and an outer
brass tube 220 mm internal diameter and 10 mm thickness. The two are of same length. The compound tube
carries an axial load of 1500 kN. Find the stresses loads transmitted to the two tubes. Also find the
contraction of compound tube for a length of 200 mm.
(03) A rod 2.50 M long at 10 OC. Find the stress in the rod if the expansion of the rod is prevented. Take
E 1105 MPa and 0.000012 per OC
(04) A tensile test is carried on a bar with 30 mm diameter, 250 mm length. Gauge length stretched 0.106 mm
under a pull of 60 kN. In a torsion test, the same rod twisted 0.017 radians over a length of 250 mm, when a
torque of 450 Nm was applied. Find the three elastic modulus and Poissons ratio for the material of test
piece.
(05) A steel bar placed between two copper bars each having the same area and length as a steel bar at 25 OC.
At this stage they are rigidly connected together at both the ends. When the temperature is raised to 325 OC
the length of the bars increased by 1.5 mm. Determine the original length and final stresses in the bars.

(1) A bar of 20 mm diameter is subjected to a pull of 50 kN. The measured extension over a
gauge length of 20 cm is 0.1 mm and change in diameter is 0.0035 mm. Calculate poissons
ratio and modulus of elasticity.
(2) A 20 mm diameter bar was subjected to an axial pull of 40 kN and change in diameter was
found to be 0.003822 mm. Find the poissons ratio, modulus of elasticity and blk modulus if
the shear modulus of the material of the bar is 76.923 Gpa.
(3) A rod ABCD shown in fig (6) has rigid supports at A and D. Find stresses induced in various
sections due to 12 kN and 24 kN axial forces. Take Ec=120 Gpa Ea=70 Gpa and Eb=100 Gpa.
