B. Answer all questions briefly and to the point:

i. From the inverse square law of force between two charge particles, define SI unit, coulomb of electric charge.
ii. Is the potential inside a hollow sphere charged with positive electricity same every where? What is the field
strength there?
iii. A 90W-30V bulb is to be lighted by a supply of 120V. For this a wire is to be connected in series with it.
Calculate the resistance of the wire.
iv. Write down the expression for the intensity of magnetic field at a distance r along the axis from the centre of a
current carrying circular coil.
v. What is the maximum value of power factor in an A.C. circuit? When does it occur?
vi. State the two necessary conditions for the bright interference fringes.
vii. The radius of curvature of convex surface of a thin plano convex lens is 15 cm and refractive index of its
material is 1.6. Find the power of the lens.
viii. A ray of light is incident on a glass tube at an angle of incidence
. Show that the reflected and
refracted rays are perpendicular to each other.
ix. For observing fraunhofer diffraction from single slit, what type of wave front should be incident on the slit.
x. A simple micro scope or a magnifying glass with a focal length 5 cm forms an image at near point of the eye .
find its magnification.
xi. The radius of the first orbit of the electron of a hydrogen atom is 5.3x10-11m. What is the radius of its second
orbit?
xii. Show graphically the variation in the mass of a radioactive substance with time. Mark the value of time on xaxis in terms of half life (T, 2T, 3T etc.) and the corresponding values of mass on y-axis.
xiii. A radioactive nucleus undergoes a series of decay according to the following scheme :

Answer six questions in this part, choosing two question from each of the section A, B and C.
SECTION - A

a. Two horizontal parallel plates, each of area 1 m2, are mounted 5mm apart in vacuum. The lower plate is
earthed and the upper one is given a positive charge of 17.7C. neglecting edge effect calculate
1. The electric field strength between the plates and give the direction of the field.
2. The potential of the upper plate.
3. The capacitance between the two plates.
4. The electric energy stored in the system.

b. Obtain an expression for the electric potential at a point which is at a distance r from the point charge Q.

c. An infinite line charge produces a field of 9x 104NC-1at a distance of 2m. Calculate the linear charge density.

a. A potentiometer wire of length 100 cm has a resistance of 10. It is connected in series with a resistance R
and a cell of emf 2V and of negligible internal resistance. A source of emf of 10 millivolt is balanced by
length of 40cm of potentiometer wire as shown in the figure. Calculate

2. The value of R

b. Applying Kirchhoffs laws, derive the condition for obtaining balance in a Wheatstone bridge.

c. The resistance of a metal at 125C is 150 ohm. What will be the resistance at 400 C? The temperature
coefficient of resistance of metal is 0.003 per C.

b. Obtain an expression of potential energy acquired by a magnet placed in a uniform magnetic field.

is found that the 9th bright fringe is at a distance of 7.5mm from the dark fringe which is second from the
central fringe. Find the wavelength of light used.

2. Draw a ray diagram illustrating the measurement of the angle of a prism using a spectrometer.

A concave lens of glass is immersed in water. What happens to its focal length?

b. Show how to put two converging lenses so that a parallel beam becomes parallel once again after passing
through both the lenses.

c. Show that the minimum distance between the object and its real image formed by a converging lens is four
times its focal length.

d. A double convex lens is to be manufactured from a glass of refractive index 1.55, with both faces of same
radius of curvature required if the focal length of the lens is to be 20cm?

a. In light of red coloured, the focal length of convex lens is found to be 26cm. However using light of violet
colour the focal length comes out to be 25cm. What is dispersive power of material of the lens?

b. A small telescope has an objective lens of focal length 140cm and an eyepiece of focal length 5cm. What is
the magnifying power of telescope for viewing distant objects when the final image is formed at a least
distance of distinct vision?
