PROTOTYPE- MODEL MAKING

Prologue
Design is not just what it looks like and feels like but is how it works.
DICTIONARY AND ENCYCLOPEDIC sources use words like accessories, equipment, and
movable objects to define furniture. Words can describe the performance and physical
characteristics of furniture, but those who design, make, and use furniture know that
furniture design extends far beyond dictionary or encyclopedic definition. Furniture design
concepts lead to the production of useful items that result in tactile experiences. In nearly
every case, furniture is something people experience through direct human engagement. In
addition, ones understanding and knowledge of furniture evolves with use and over time.
Designing furniture relies on intuition, judgment, design skills, engineering principles, and
knowledge in a broad range of disciplines helpful with problem solving. Designing furniture
requires inspiration, a concept or idea, and the commitment to give pleasure to those who
use it.
Furniture pieces are designed and fabricated to assist in the many ways people sit and rest,
work and play, organize or display items, and partition space. This view suggests a broad
utilitarian framework, in which function is perceived to be the primary intended purpose of
furniture. Although function, utility, and social use are important aspects of the performance
of furniture, rarely does function alone inspire great design. Furniture design draws upon
ideas of beauty, principles of design, theory, material properties, fabrication technologies,
business economies, environmental design matters, and the surrounding spatial context in
which it is placed, all of which are integral and intertwined with function, utility, and social
use. Considerations that influence furniture design include:
Aesthetics (the meaning of form)
Historical precedent (examples from the past)
Principles of design (i.e., unity, harmony, hierarchy, spatial order)
Function and social use (ergonomics, comfort)
Design processes (sketching, iterative overlays, model studies, digital modeling, fullscale working prototypes, collage assemblies)
Material (classification, characteristics, properties, availability, cost)
Fabrication processes (hand, power, digital)
Environmental design matters (sustainability, renewable materials, offgassing)
Surrounding context (the spatial setting for furniture)
A goal in designing furniture is to consider all design aspects in a comprehensive and
integrated manner, while maintaining focus and critical engagement upon the primary
concepts and ideas that inspire design.
The designer is the one who knows how to achieve perfection not when there is nothing
left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

Challenge
We are challenging you to make a prototype of a multifunctional child-friendly fixture that is
perfect for parents, looking to furnish their homes with fun and playful decor items that
their kids will certainly love. It should be space efficient, safe, light weight and carry able to
outdoor spaces when required.
You are required to think of the various possibilities where your design can be implemented.
Also you need to explain the various assemblies or joineries of your fixture.

General Rules:
1. Any undergraduate or masters student of any discipline is eligible to participate in this
event. However PhD students and research scholars are not allowed to present their papers.
2. Each team may have a maximum of three members.
3. No team is allowed to send more than one entry for the same departmental cell, but you
are free to send multiple entries provided your papers are related to different cells.
4. This event will be conducted in two stages and its detailed procedure has been clarified
below.

STAGE-I:
Abstract Submissions
1) Participants are needed to send in the abstract of the original/review work including the
references, the idea proposed with figures (if needed) to architecture@cognizance.org.in.
2) Abstract should not exceed 500 words and the covering page of the abstract must have
Name(s), Institution of study, Email address(es), Contact number(s), Name of the cell you
wish to present the paper in, Topic of paper presentation & Cogni-IDs of all the team
members.
3) Your email should have the category name as your subject and your file name should
have the title of the concerned paper.
For Example, a paper on simulation of a Hydrocracker unit in a refinery unit should have its
mail subject as PROTOTYPE: Modelling, Simulation, Design and Process Control:
COG15/XXXXX and its title as Simulation of Hydrocracker unit.
4) Selection to the next round for final presentations will be based on the abstract
submitted.
5) Deadline for Abstract Submissions is 8th February 2015.
6) The result for the first round will be put up on the website till 15th February 2015 and will
also be mailed to you.

7) For any particular queries regarding paper presentations, please contact the event
coordinators.

STAGE-II:
Full Paper Submissions
The second round will be conducted at IIT Roorkee during COGNIZANCE 2015 (27th-29th
March 2015).
1) Participants should submit their full paper in .doc and .pdf format. You need to bring
three hard copies of your complete paper (i.e. printed report) & two passport size
photographs of each participant along with all the necessary details attached.
2) Formatting rules should be strictly followed. A font type of Bookman Old Style with a
font size of 12 should be kept.
3) Participants should ensure that their papers include all relevant figures, tables and
bibliography.
4) Submissions, in any case, should not exceed 12 pages in length, double-columned.

Final Demonstration
In this round, the selected teams would have to demonstrate their prototypes to the panel
of judges. The models may be subjected to various test conditions by the judges at that
time.

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE
The registration shall be done through the Cognizance website.

Steps
1. Each member needs to register on the website. This will generate a unique Cogni ID.
2. The Team Leader (which you will select yourself) needs to login into the website through
his username and password.
3. The Prototype event page has the tab Register to register the team for the event.
4. This will generate your Team ID and a mail shall be sent to the Email ID of the team leader
about the registration.
Submit your entries and mail your queries to architecture@cognizance.org.in.
