Part B Solid Mechanics and Structures (Total 70 marks)

Answer all these questions in the blue answer book (or a new answer book). Clearly
indicate Part B on the front of the answer book.

Q1.
To track the deformation in a slowly moving glacier, three survey stations are installed in the shape
of an equilateral triangle, spaced 100m apart, as shown in the picture. After a suitable period of
time, the spacing between the three stations is measured again, and found to be 98m, 102m and
105m, as shown in the figure. Assuming that the deformation of the glacier is homogeneous
(constant) over the region spanned by the survey stations, please compute the components of the
plane strain matrix ( , , ) associated with this deformation, expressing your answer as
components in the coordinate system , shown.

Q2.
A cylinder (initially free from residual stresses) has inner and outer radii
10 mm and 40
mm. The material yields in tension at stress 250 MPa. Yielding to an intermediate radius
is produced by internal pressure . After is released, the maximum residual stress at

reached 0.8 . Determine and . Ignore possible strain hardening and Bauschinger effect.

Q3.
A steel cylinder of 0.3-m outer radius is shrunk over a solid steel shaft of 0.1-m radius. The
shrinking misfit is 1mm. Determine the external pressure on the outside of the cylinder required
to reduce to zero the circumferential (hoop) tensile stress at the inside of the cylinder. Use
200 GPa and 0.3 (if needed).

Q4.
Consider a thin solid circular disk of radius 1 m, thickness 0.5 cm, made of aluminium ( = 2700
kg/m3, = 70 GPa and = 0.3), spinning at an angular speed rad/s, see figure below. It has a
weak point C (OC = 0.5 m), small embedded crack of length 5 mm located in radial direction. The
fracture toughness of the material is 10 MPa ! . At which angular speed will the disk begin to fail
at point C?
