FACTSHEET 1:
PLANNING A KUROILER
BUSINESS VENTURE
(Day 0):

ITEM
Self-assessment
of the
prospective
Kuroiler farmer.

DESCRIPTION

This factsheet is for both a prospective Kuroiler farmer and the one yet to start but is
interested
It is important that a Kuroiler business venture requires a dedicated farmer/entrepreneur
who is committed to making a profit from the investments made in the Kuroiler venture.
We have seen that the lead entrepreneur for a Kuroiler business who usually succeeds has
some particular qualities including some of the following;
Visionary: while they may start small, the successful Kuroiler entrepreneur has a
big and long-term aim to expand their venture and to make it more profitable.
Passionate: the lead entrepreneur is passionate about the business venture and
this is demonstrated through working long-hours, studying the birds closely, quick
to respond to any relevant challenges, eagerness to learn from others etc.
Team player: the lead entrepreneur is able to rally good people with clear roles
around his venture. He recognizes that he cant accomplish everything by
him/herself and therefore builds trust and relations with volunteers, suppliers,
buyers, creditors etc
Hardworking, determined, creative and eagerness to learn are also important
qualities we have observed in successful entrepreneurs.
Assess your skill level and capabilities in relation to these qualities, where are you strong
and where are you weak?
The good news is that nearly all entrepreneurs are not born with these qualities but they

learn them through life experience and apply them in their business venture. You too can
learn all of these with determination and dedication to the business venture.

and knowledge
level.

Financial plan:

Your success in Kuroiler farmer will depend for a large part in what you know and what
practical skills required in the business you have
It is usually difficult to find one entrepreneur who has all the knowledge and skills
necessary to run the Kuroiler business
Some of the most critical knowledge and skills you will need to succeed in the Kuroiler
business include
Planning skills: both production, technical and financial planning skills
Financial management skills: these have to do with day to day management of
finances associated with your business venture.
Production management skills: these have to do with managing Kuroilers from day
one to when you sale them and/or their products.
Marketing and sales skills: these have to do with understanding the customer
needs, markets, sales points, pricing, advertising, packaging etc.
The prospective Kuroiler farmer should assess their level of skills and knowledge on the key
areas above and by all means seek to acquire more knowledge and skills in the weak areas.
Successful Kuroiler entrepreneurs in most cases have some basic financial management
and production management knowledge and skills these are most critical. Planning and
marketing skills can be outsourced through the staff recruited in the venture.
After acquiring some basic production, marketing and sales management knowledge and
skills from YESE you will understand what resource requirements in both financial, human
and physical (land, buildings etc) you will need to successfully run a successful enterprise
At YESE we shall introduce you to business modeling through which we can evaluate what
the various resource requirements and returns are for the various Kuroiler production
options
Based on our current assessments - a prospective kuroiler farmer of a 500 hen/50 cocks
unit may consider the following financial options;
1. Selling day-old chicks business model:

Other business models we have assessed include selling cocks only; sale of fertilized eggs
and sale of yellow-yolk eggs. Most farmers though we know have combined all these
models in their single operation minimizing risks and maximizing opportunities of each.
Though it would be advisable to focus on one business model.

Mobilizing funds:

For most farmers one of the greatest barriers they face in this business is the mobilization
of funds required to invest in a Kuroiler business venture particular before sales of either
mature cocks or eggs starts. The following are some of the pathways some of our clients
have shared with us to acquire the required funds;
i)
Personal or group savings this is the most important and cheapest source of
funds.
ii)
Loans - either from banks, SACCOs, family members or friends.
iii)
Government programmes such as the youth livelihood fund; district
development funds etc.
iv)
Development aid: from donors and charitable organizations
v)
Religious institutions: such as the church, mosques etc.
vi)
Others: e.g. school programmes
Before you start mobilizing for funds it is important that you have a clear business plan
including a financing plan and marketing strategy.
Your level of knowledge and skills too in the Kuroiler venture will increase your chances of
getting access to the required investment funds.
By attending a 5 day training course with YESE we can support you as you develop a clear
business and financing plan as well as point you to additional financing opportunities that
you may not have thought about.
It is also important that you invest some of your personal resources in the venture this
will increase your sense of ownership than if the project is financed 100% by government
or donor funds.
