BAMBOOTECH

Prologue
Bamboo is known as "Green Gold" and "Poor man's Timber". India is fortunate enough to be
endowed with resources of bamboo. Being the fastest growing grass in the world, it is a high
yielding renewable material resource. The high strength and low weight factor of bamboo
makes it remarkably earthquake and cyclone resistant. The ultimate aim of including
sustainability, economic feasibility, aesthetic value and functionality in design can be
achieved through bamboo. This problem challenges participants to come up with new
research oriented uses of bamboo in modern times to include it in as many facets as
possible.
The use of bamboo as a construction material will become more widespread only if people
see bamboo being used to build. Bamboo structures need to be built in public spaces to give
the material greater visibility and to provide a platform for bamboo to prove itself as
durable, stylish and contemporary.
Making good and aesthetically pleasing bamboo joints is rather complicated because it is
hollow, tapered, has nodes at varying distances, and is not perfectly circular. It is important
to keep all these constraints in mind when designing a bamboo joint.

Design Challenge
"Quality of life is not only about what you find in the shops; it's about the landscape."
-Donald Tusk
While landscape designing, it is necessary to ensure that people would interact with
element directly or indirectly and can have the pleasure of elegant. They can have some
privacy in beautiful environment. There are so many elements that can be added in
landscaping design so that the enhancing capability of that landscaped area is increased.
Some of the elements are terrain shape, water bodies, lighting, flora, fauna, etc. GAZEBO is
one of those elements which enhance the beauty of an area.
GAZEBO is an open or lattice pavilion used for sitting, shelter, landscaping element and
recreational space. Challenge is to design GAZEBO made of bamboo which should be
innovative with aesthetically pleasant design. The design should be an innovative
composition of solids and voids keeping in mind the function it has to serve. Size of GAZEBO
should not exceed 2.5mx2.5m in PLAN and HEIGHT is dependent on proportions. It should
fulfill the purpose of sitting, shelter, landscaping element and recreational space.

STAGE-I

Team of minimum 4 and maximum 5 people is permissible.

The teams are supposed to submit detailed drawings of structures.
Drawings (plan, elevations, sections, views and dimensioning) should be sent by
March 1, 2015 (11:59 PM sharp).
10 teams will be short listed for the second round.
In case any team does not confirm their presence, chance will be given to the best
wait listed team.

STAGE-II

WORKSHOP will be conducted by experts on 'Construction Techniques of Bamboo

Structures' during Cognizance 2015 (27th -29th March).
The short listed teams will execute their designs in the time duration of 6 hours.
The materials provided (only) by the organizers to each team are as following:i) Bamboo 30 (15 thick and 15 thin) of 10ft (approx.).
ii) Bamboo composite like mat (5ft x 8ft - can be folded to desired size but not cut)
3 nos. per team.
iii) Hammers, driller, rope, nails, screws, and saw.

Detail Requirements for sending entries at Stage I:

1. Drawing with plan, elevations, sections and at least one view.
2. The dimensions of all the elements of the structure used.
3. Only 1 PDF file per team should be sent consisting of everything (plan, elevations,
view, or any other relevant drawings, dimensions of all elements, design concept
etc.)
4. Registration of all team members along with contact details is mandatory. Attach the
filled up registration form along with your entries. Any entry without the registration
form will NOT be accepted.
5. All entries must be ELECTRONIC and must be sent to architecture@cognizance.org.in
before the deadline.
