PERFORMANCE:

Flow: 1.5 liters per second to 75 liters per second

Pumping Head: 75 meters
Wet Well Depth: To be confirmed on site
14 - 1 General.
a) To provide a single source responsibility for the manufacture, warranty, service
and operation of a prefabricated, skid mounted, fully automatic variable speed
pumping system (systems) for turf irrigation. The pumping system shall
automatically maintain a constant discharge pressure regardless of varying flow
demands within the station rating. Pumping system shall conform to the following
specifications. This specification covers the minimum requirements; however, it
should not be construed as all inclusive. It is the successful vendor's responsibility to
include all necessary appurtenances to provide for a complete, automatic, smooth
operating, and reliable pumping system. The manufacturer shall supply a complete
set of general arrangement drawings, electrical power schematics, and control
schematics in the operations & service manual. The entire station shall be U.L.
Listed as a Packaged Pumping System.
b) The operating system shall have a variable frequency converter governed by a
pressure transducer. The selection of pumps is to be such that constant
pressure is available across the flow range from 1.5 l/s to 75 l/s without cycling of
pumps.
c) The water for the system shall be filtered by a 500 micron self cleaning & flushing
screen filter. A 75mm filter flushing pipe shall be routed to a drain outside of the
pump house to discard the filter flush water.
d) The entire operation of the pumps shall be achieved using a Variable Frequency
Drive under the control of a dedicated pump controller system.
14 - 2 Manufacturer.
The pumping system shall be of the type manufactured by either: Rainbird, Flowtronex,
Watertronics
14 3 Pump Type and Mounting

a) The pump station shall consist of either:

a) 1. a series of vertical multi stage pumps capable of meeting the specified duty.
OR b) 2. a series of vertical turbine pumps capable of meeting the specified duty.
b) The operating system shall have a variable frequency converter (Drive). The Drive
will switch between pumps to share the run hours.
c) Each pump shall be manifold into the header pipe and isolated by butterfly
valves. The header pipe and all pumping equipment shall be mounted onto a suitable
steel skid base.
d) It is anticipated that the pump set will be housed in a 10m x 4.5m pump shed (by
others). An 1800mm wet well will be situated within the shed to accommodate either
the turbine pumps or the foot valve for a vertical multi stage system.
e) Vertical Multi Stage Option Only:
The suction line will consist of:
300mm stainless steel foot valve.
A long x 300 PN10 Poly. vertical pipe, length to suit.
Elbow & associated mounting plate (to suit lid of wet well), fabricated in
epoxy coated, galvanized steel.
A horizontal suction pipe c/w 2 priming socket, epoxy coated,
galvanized steel.
All components to be securely mounted on galvanized brackets, all dyna
bolts to be galvanized or stainless steel.
f) The discharge line will consist of:
A flexible coupling on the discharge end of manifold.
Heavy duty epoxy coated galavanised steel fittings and pipe pieces to allow
installation of filter within pump shed.
Pipe pieces located downstream of the filter but upstream of main isolation
valve are to incorporate:
2 air valve
1 tested gate valve
Minimum of 3 x 1 sockets for future use.
Flow Meter

Main isolation valve to be a geared butterfly valve located

approximately 400mm inside wall of shed where main passes through
shed wall.
All components to be securely mounted on galvanized brackets, all dyna
bolts to be galvanized or stainless steel.
g) Discharge Piping
All piping shall be constructed from flanged heavy duty hot dipped galvanized steel
or 316 grade stainless steel.
h) Bolts
All bolts used in the assembly of the pumping manifolds to be galvanized to retard
corrosion, all washers and nuts to be galvanized.
14 4 Pump Operation
a) Automatic Operation
The pump station is to be capable of operating at low flows (below 3l/s) for extended
periods without any cycling of pumps.
The operation of the Pump Station should generally be as follows:
By constant pressure monitoring, as a demand for water occurs in the system, the system
responds to the drop in pressure by starting the first pump on the Frequency Drive, as this
demand increases and the first pump has reached full speed, the second pump is started on
a variable speed drive, whilst simultaneously the first pump is ramped down to ensure that
the pressure variations are kept to a minimum, as demand increases further the first pump
ramps up until it is again running at full speed, then the third pump is started as the first
and second pumps ramp down, and the process repeats itself until all available pumps have
been started depending on system water demands.
The shut down procedure is a reversal of the start up procedure as water demand decreases
the first pump ramps down and up as the other pumps switch off to maintain constant
pressure.
The pump control system is to be programmed to ensure that smooth re pressurizing of the
irrigation system can take place.
b) Manual and Emergency Operation
Manual operation of pumps must be selected individually, or in the event of control

failure manual emergency switches must be provided to allow pumps to be operated.

c) Automatic Sequence Change
To ensure equal number of hours run by each pump and to reduce the number of
starts per hour on each pump, the system should alternate the sequence of the pumps
used each time the system starts.
d) Set Points
Multiple set points are to be available. Switching between set points should be
possible from the system operator interface. A real time clock should allow the
system automatically change set points during pre-programmed periods.
e) Operator Interface
There shall be provision for the operator to view all relevant information, including
Running Hours of each pump.
Actual pump status, (running, not available, standby, fault).
Clock Programs (relating to set point pressures).
Stand-by pumps.
Pump change over time
Pump priority
Inlet pressure measuring (if required)
Minimum limit (loss of water, burst mains protection)
Set points
f) Alarms
The operator interface should also be capable of displaying alarm details such as:
Mains failure
Frequency converter fault
Analogue input (pressure transducer) fault
High discharge pressure fault
Low discharge pressure fault
Motor thermal overload fault
Pump thermal fault
Loss of prime fault
Water Temperature (with digital display)

g) Valves
Valves up to 50 N.B. will be screwed cad plated brass ball valves, valves 80 N.B and
over will be butterfly valves with 316 stainless steel disk and spindle, all pump
sets will have the valves fitted on both sides of each main booster pump on Vertical
Multistage Pumps or on discharge only of Turbine Pumps.
h) The pump controls shall be connected to the Golf Course Irrigation Central
Computer. Type of connection to be suitable for Pump System and Irrigation
Control System offered.
