Presentation: General arrangement

1. Start
- This is my presentation about ships general
arrangement plan
2. Arrange the ship is one of the most important part to
complete the ship
3. The general arrangement is evolved by a gradual process
of trial, check and improvement. As for any other problem,
the first approach to a solution to the general arrangement
must be based on a minimum amount of information
including
- Required volume of cargo spaces, based on type and
amount of cargo
- Method of stowing cargo and cargo handling gear
- Required volume of machinery spaces, based on type of
machinery and ship
- Required volume of the accommodation spaces, based
on the number of crew and passenger and standard of
accommodations
- Required volume of tankage, mainly fuel, ballast, based
on type of machinery, type of fuel and cruising range
- Required standard of subdivision and limitation of main
transverse bulkhead spacing
- Approximate principle dimensions
- Preliminary lines plan
4. This is the content of my presentation
- First: the duties of the ships arrangement
- Second: the basic division of the ship
- Introduce general arrangement plan.
- Fourth: conclusion

The naval architects have to mention about it to choose

the suitable dimension for each compartments of the
ship. However, what is the basic for selection?
Now, I would like to give you the basic information to
solve this issue
6.1. First: divide the length of the ship
- Divide the length of the ship by watertight bulkheads
that are more than the minimum required number of
bulkhead, according to the table.
- We can see, the selection of bulkhead depends on the
length of the ship and the position of the engine room
- For example, I have a ship, this length is 105.8 meters,
and the engine room is situated in aft. So the minimum
required number of bulkhead is 5, so I can choose 6
bulkheads
6.2. Second: divide the height of the ship
- Divide the height of the ship by floors, decks
- Naval architects have to pay attention about the
distance between each decks, floors, height of the
double bottom
- This is the basic required of them.
6.3. Third: divide the breadth of the ship
- Divide the breadth of the ship by double side,
longitudinal bulkheads
7. Choose the basic frame spacing.
- The standard frame spacing is calculated according to
the formula: s = 2l + 450 minimeter
- This is a chart: the frame spacing for each regions is
different
+ In the fore/aft region: the is less than 610 minimeters
+ From forepeak bulkhead to the 0.2 l is calculated
following this formula
- An example:
- In general, the frame spacing must be less than 1 meter
8. Now, I would like to introduce to you the general
arrangement of the cargo ship.
8.1. First: we have to mention about the navigation bridge
visibility.
- The view of the sea surface from the conning position
may not be obscured by more than two ship lengths or
2

500 meters whichever is the less, forward of the bow to

10 degrees on either side under all conditions of
draught, trim and deck cargo.
8.1.1. Second: the horizontal field
- The horizontal field of vision from the conning position
must extend over an arc of not less than 225 degrees
from right ahead not less than 22.5 degrees abaft the
beam on either side of the ship.
8.1.2. The requirement of the blind sector:
- The blind sector that is caused by cargo, cargo gear or
other obstructions outside the wheelhouse forward of
the beam and that obstructs the view of the sea surface
as seen from the conning position may not exceed 10
degrees.
- The total arc of blind sectors may not exceed 20
degrees.
- The clear sectors between blind sectors must be at
least 5 degrees
8.2. The forecastle deck
- On this deck, we arrange anchor winches, mooring
winches, ventilator, air and sounding pipes, light mast,
bollards, etc.
8.3. Hold of cargo ship
- Bulk carrier: the hold is designed to discharge with
grabs easily
- Container ship: they have the cell guide
- Hold of the lng carrier
- Hold of the tanker: they have the ladder, access the
hold can be obtain through this
8.4. Superstructure
- Crew quarters must not be located on a deck below the
deepest load line, with certain exceptions.
- Spaces for crew are to be positively separated from
spaces for passengers and officers. On tankers, the
rules required that the crew be located aft of the cargo
spaces
- Accommodation spaces must be constructed of
fireproof materials and in accordance with specified
methods of fire protection. Stairways and corridors, as a
3

means of escape, have special fire protection

requirements
- Officers quarters: they be separate from crew
accommodations and at least equivalent to them
- Arrange the rooms must be pay attention about the
position of each person, make them work easily
- The facility of each room is decreased from up to down,
from the front to behind
