(WWII PACIFIC WAR - NEW GUINEA)

Officer of the US Naval Construction Battalion

Uncommon Album of US Forces

with Native Papuan Tribes
Papua New Guinea, September 1944 - August 1945.
An uncommon photograph album from World War II,
exclusively demonstrating the efforts and accomplishments
of the 60th U.S. Naval Construction Battalion in Papua New
Guinea, containing 238 black and white photographs
compiled by an unidentified officer. Photographs vary in
sizes, the smallest being 5.5 x 7.0 inches, most mid-size
ranging from 3.5 x 2.5 to 5 x 3 inches, and a single full-page
view measures 8.5 x 11.5 inches. All are mounted with
corners, some of which are in patriotic colors. Oblong
Quarto Kodak Album, black leather string-tied binding,
wear to boards, otherwise in Very Good Condition,
internally sound with vivid, seldom seen images.

Photographs illustrate the work and camp of the US 60th

Seabees, as well as the life and custom of indigenous
folks, and further embodies a fine example of
collaboration between first and third world societies.
Pertaining to camp life in the tropics of Oceania, and
naval duties performed by the 856 officers and enlisted
men, photographs show immense warships and slender
ocean kayaks, planes flying in formation, some scenes
of aircraft wreckage including at least one Boeing B-17
Flying Fortress bomber, a Japanese flag evidently
captured by the American officers, a temporary city of
tents to accommodate the US navy, a seaside lookout
post, cranes, trucks, and other equipment. Scenes in a
nearby city show a parade, an unusually stylish large
chapel for military purposes which was a combined
effort of the Americans' skilled tradesmen and the
Papuans knowledge in the use of Sago Palms. Several
views illustrate the immense undertaking of clearing and
construction, and the album concludes with a full page
view of a very large runway, which is the primary
legacy of this particular battalion.
Indigenous life is represented with men weaving palm
fronds for roof making and women weaving baskets, a
rudimentary hut mounted on stilts, a substantial structure
made of stick walls and a palm thatched roof, simple
handcrafted catamarans, tribal men in elaborate festive
costume, gatherings of islanders, and quaint villages. $750

(WWII PACIFIC WAR - NEW GUINEA)

Officer of the US Naval Construction Battalion

US Forces in Papua and Leyte

Preparing for Philippines Liberation
Papua New Guinea, Philippines, circa 1942 - 1945.
An officer's album containing 79 photograph from his
service in Papua New Guinea and the Philippines with
the U.S. Naval Construction Battalion, the US 60Th
Seabees, largely illustrating interaction and
collaboration with indigenous Papuan tribes during
World War II, and also from the pivotal work done in
the Philippines just before victory. Photographs are
approximately 2.5 x 3.5 inches, mounted to cardstock
leafs bound with a metal document fastener, some
images captioned in manuscript. Some fading to images
and boards, otherwise in Very Good Condition, an
interesting ensemble of seldom seen images.

The navy officer and compiler of this album took

special interest in the people of New Guinea,
providing here several photographs of them. Some
of these include men constructing traditional stick
framed shelters - their only instrument being a large
bolo knife, women washing in a river, and children
whose play has been interrupted for an impromptu
snapshot. A lovely handcrafted catamaran is also
captured. Although primarily remembered for
accomplishments in construction projects which
improved US dominance in air combat, this volume
suggests more empathetic works were also made,
specifically in building hospitals and treating native
islanders who suffered from malaria. An Australian
dispensary in New Guinea is also shown.
A few photographs are also taken at Leyte, during
the preparation for the liberation of the Philippines.
The Seabees battalion arrived there in October 1944,
after the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle
in World, to build the facilities necessary for an
enormous fleet to finally execute defeat over the
Japanese. Those who went ashore to build and
establish a base of operations were subjected to
frequent bombing attacks by Japanese planes, which
persisted until the end of the war. An unusually
small number of photographs center around camp
life and camaraderie by comparison, though one of
these worthy of mention shows an officer proudly
$375
flaunting a Japanese flag captured by the officer.

(TRIBAL LIFE IN AUSTRALASIA)

Sub-Lieutenant F.L. Ward, RNVR

Papua New Guinea Water Villages

Rare Photographs of Rabaul Tribes
Papua New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, 1938. A
unique album of 117 sepia photographs from
Australasia, featuring many striking images of Papuan
villages and tribal custom in Port Moresby and Rabaul,
taken by Sub-Lieutenant F. L. Ward, of the Royal
Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) whilst on the one and
only voyage made by RMS Oronsay which extended to
New Zealand. Well organized, neatly captioned in
manuscript, and mounted with corners onto 23
cardstock leaves separated with tissue guards,
photographs measure approximately 4 x 3 inches, with
slight variances both larger and smaller. A rear pocket
houses a large folding map of South West Pacific area,
which also encompasses Malaysia and Indonesia,
printed for the Allied Air Forces, Directorate of
Intelligence. Central Interpretation Unit [C.I.U.
Strategic cartographic material]. Map measures 30 x 20
inches, verso initialled by Ward. 8vo. Oblong album,
blue and grey mottled cloth boards, repair to spine,
otherwise in very good condition, a fastidious
presentation of striking images.

Tribal photographs from Papua New Guinea are of the

highest interest in this volume. Unabashedly, officer
Ward approached the native Papuans of to capture in
35 photographs the essence of their ancient and spirit
focused culture. Native men and women pose and
demonstrate elaborate costumes used in traditional
dance ceremonies, as well as common dress and
ornamentation made solely of domestic organic
materials. Seldom are such quality photographs seen
outside of a professional photographer's portfolio.
Prior to 1930, European maps showed New Guinea's
highlands as uninhabited forests. When first flown over
by aircraft, settlements with agricultural terraces and
stockades were observed. The most startling discovery
took place on 4 August 1938, contemporary to this
album, when Richard Archbold discovered the Grand
Valley of the Baliem River which was inhabited by
50,000 yet-undiscovered farmers living in Stone Age
villages. These Dani people were the last society of its
size to make first contact with the rest of the world.
SS Oronsay travelled from London to Australia from
1925 until the outbreak of World War II, extending her
voyage to New Zealand only once, in 1938.
6

Following a few harbour views from the voyage, seven

and photographs from Colombo in Ceylon, are seven
unique and captivating scenes from a tour of Aden in
Arabia, offering glimpses of antiquity, a camel caravan,
a central street. There are also sixteen vivid photographs
of Port Said and the Suez canal.
In East New Britain, twenty striking photographs
illustrate tribal rituals and third world living, still
prominent at the time of this album. Here the focus is on
the authentic natives of Rabaul, possibly of the Baining
tribe, photographing robust and stoic warriors with long
lances, skirts of grass and plumes, and face paint, as well
as warlords, witch doctors, and chieftains with their
superstitious masks and immense headdresses. Also
fascinating are the scenes of ritual dancers in full
costume, some with high reaching head ornaments.
[In 1937, just prior to this voyage, an eruption of the
Tavurvur volcano destroyed the town].
A Papuan tribal village in Port Moresby is shown in
fifteen images. Rare photos illustrate a water village
composed of rows of large grass thatched huts on stilts
lining the white sand beach (likely Tupuselei as seen in
photographs held by the State Library of Victoria,
possibly also Koki Wanigela, Hanuabada, or Gabi).
Papuans are seen in traditional dance costume with grass
skirts, bead necklaces and headdresses, as well as the
more eccentrically adorned witch doctor and sorcerer.
[The Motuan people of the area now known as Port
Moresby once traded their pots for sago, other food and
canoe logs, sailing from Hanuabada and other villages
built on stilts above the waters of the bay. Electricity
was not introduced until 1925; piped water supply was
provided in 1941, three years later than these images].
Further Pacific views include 4 harbour and city views
of Hobart, originally founded in 1804 as a penal colony
in Tasmania, 5 hilltop photographs taken in Auckland,
New Zealand, 4 photographs of Yallourn, a company
town in Victoria built from the 1920s to 1950s to house
employees of the State Electricity Commission of
Victoria, and 15 photographs Sydney featuring The
Domain, the bridge, and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Some snapshots are taken on the homeward voyage,
including a young Maori girl on board the ship, and
twelve images of the English Lake District in the
officer's homeland conclude the album.

(RARE ALBUMEN PRINTS - ELGIN MARBLES)

Stephen Thomson

1872 British Museum Collection

Large Images of Elgin Marbles
London, 1872. A rare and massive album of large 50
albumen print photographs of the Elgin Marbles and
other classical sculptures held in the British Museum,
taken by Stephen Thomson, photographer for W.A.
Mansell & Co., and printed by the London Stereoscopic &
Photographic Company for display at the British
Museum. Large Oblong Quarto Album, measuring 13 x
17 inches, morocco leather over cloth boards, titled in gilt
to spine. Each photograph bears the embedded stamp of
the British Museum Stereoscopic Company and measures
7.5 x 11.5 inches. Wear to boards, faint age toning to
extremities of mounts and some photographs, otherwise in
very good, original condition, a singular item.

Original photographs from the British Museum series,

1872, in large format, contained in the original album as
displayed for visitors' reference to purchase as a
portfolio or on mounts. Twenty-five photographs are of
the 'Elgin Marbles' before the notorious over-cleaning
of the 1930's. Twenty-two images illustrate various
Greek and Roman marble sculptures, including several
casts. One photograph shows an Etruscan sepulchral
terracotta sculpture, and two are of Classical vases.
Thomson photographed the Elgin Marbles as well as the
Parthenon itself in 1870, as part of a voluminous work
of nearly 1,000 photographs of bas-reliefs, sculptures
and other antiquities, published in seven stages by W.A.
Mansell and Co. as the "British Museum Collection." At
the same time, the museum published a guide describing
the collection, titled "A Catalogue of a Series of
Photographs (by S. Thompson) from the Collection in
the British Museum, WA Mansell & Co, 1872." The
project was initiated and paid for by wealthy British
solicitor Charles Harrison, member of the British
Archaeological Association, and author of the
introduction in the published catalogue.
The 1891 "Annual Index of Periodicals and Photographs
describes the ongoing work as "... the most complete
series ever issued, and it will include numerous objects
never before photographed for publication..."

(1911-12 KASHMIR MOUNTAIN TREKKING)

Edward Bibby

From Islamabad to the Lidder Valley,

the Kolahoi Glacier, and the Sind Valley
[Kashmir & Sind, circa 1911-12.] Unusual photograph
album of an alpine adventure in Kashmir and Sind,
complimented by a typescript narrative of the journey, by
Edward Bibby, possible relation of Edward Bibby (18291901), English mill owner who settled in Waipawa, New
Zealand. Contains 51 original gelatin silver print views,
with text mounted alongside related images, together over
18 pages forming a beautifully illustrated travellogue.
Photographs vary in size, the smallest being 7 x 5 cm and
the largest full page views being 23 x 18cm. Oblong album
(23 x 30 cm), contemporary half morocco over maroon
cloth in very good condition.

Bibby undertakes an adventure of 2-3 weeks in Kashmir

with a few others, beginning at Kanbal near Islamabad,
before pushing on to Achebal, and then to the Martand
(Mattan) Sun Temple and nearby village of Bawan, and
also the Eishmakam Monastery.
Snow trout fishing at Lidderwatt and Pahalgam are early
highlights of the journey, 200 being the claim of fish
caught with the assistance of a native guide. Armed with
Joshua Duke's "Kashmir and Jammu; a Guide for
Visitors" (Calcutta, 1910) the party proceeds to the
Kolahoi Glacier, calling it one of the most interesting
days of the journey. Views capture the ice mass,
imposing peaks, and the Sekhwas valley. Further views
and a captivating reminiscence ensues, of an ascending
trek 14000 feet up the Yamheur Pass in the Sind Valley.
Images here show a gorge, some high mountain bluffs,
and Yamsar Nag Lake (Tarsar Lake). Bibby concludes,
"This was really our most strenuous day, fifteen miles
including going." Following the exertion, the party
makes a leisurely road trip to Sonamarg and Koolan.
The final entry, abruptly ending the work, notes the
customs of the few inhabitants with whom they crossed
paths, and mentions Ganderbal as the next destination,
of which we hear no more, suggesting his death shortly
upon his return home, perhaps as the volume was being
assembled.

(KASHMIR AND SIND GLACIER VALLEY)

Colonel A. H. Gillmore

Mountaineering in the Himalayas

Nanga Parbat and the Kamri Pass
Kashmir, Sind, Himalaya Mountains, 1933. A cleverly
narrated photograph album featuring 3 watercolour
drawings, dated and dedicated in manuscript by the
adventurer, author, and photographer of the work, a
distinguished British Colonel, A.H. Gillmore, and Officer
of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE).
Contains 58 photographs poetically described in
manuscript. Photographs vary in size, the smallest
measuring 3.25 x 2.25 inches, and the largest 6.25 x 4
inches. Oblong 8vo. Album, military green cloth stringtied boards, slightly frayed at extremities, otherwise in
Very Good Condition.

Spectacular long range views are taken from the

Sonamarg hill station of the Glacier Valley and its
indomitable peaks. Scenery in the Himalayas, not seen
by many Westerners at the time, include Mount Nanga
Parbat, Mount Haramuk photographed from the Kamri
Pass, the high altitude Vishansar Lake, the precipices
and narrow road of the Zoji La pass.
Srinagar is seen in 6 views, others showing the expanse
of Kashmir Valley and the Jhelum River, including a
long houseboat for which the city and river is famed. At
least 3 views are identified as the Sind Valley, including
a photograph taken at the Woyil Bridge, where the
mountain climbers packed their horses and mules for the
ascent as only foot traffic was permitted across at the
time (and where in 1937 four years later Eric Shipton
would begin his Shaksgam Expedition, bidding farewell
to his mother and Lady Clutterbuck).
Scant photographs are taken of people living in the
Gurais valley, in the high Himalayas of northern Jammu
and Kashmir, including a group of several little children.
A small herd of changthang goats which produce the
coveted fleece of fine pashmina wool, appears along
side the latter. The lieutenant concludes his album with a
portrait of himself up on the snowy Kamri Pass, no
doubt taken by his sherpas.
At the time a Lieutenant thirty years of age, Gillmore
chronicles his mountaineering adventure and the
splendour of Nnaga Parbat with entertaining and
$975
informative anecdotes.

(SOUTHEAST ASIA & STRAITS SETTLEMENT)

Rare Photographs of a
Toda Village in Southern India
Burma, Singapore, India, circa 1930-1935. Original
photographs taken by an unidentified RAF officer who
spent at least one year in Southeast Asia and throughout
India in the period between the two World Wars.
Contains 111 black and white photographs mounted onto
Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring
approximately 2.25 x 1.75 inches, and the largest 8.5 x 6
inches. Oblong Quarto string-tied album. Green textured
padded boards, covers split at extremities, leafs brittle at
hinge, two have separated, spotting to a few select images,
otherwise in very good condition.

In British India the first city to appear is Mumbai

(Bombay) where the officer photographs the Gateway of
India monument built during the British Raj. He also
encounters a village of Toda people, a small pastoral
community who live on the isolated Nilgiri plateau of
Southern India, photographing some of the families and
their innovative semi-cylindrical bamboo and rattan
thatched huts. Twelve photographs of the Taj Mahal are
taken. Images show a young boy operating a weaving
apparatus, some merchants, old war cannons, an aircraft
grounded and ablaze, some grass huts in the hills, and
the Chittorgarh Fort with the towers of victory and of
fame seen in the distance. Also of historic interest is the
Burmese Pagoda which in 1854 was brought from the
city of Prome in Myanmar, to Eden Gardens in Kolkata,
by Lord Dalhousie. In the Kashmir Highlands, possibly
near Koomi Kot village, in Azad Jammu and Kashmir of
Pakistan, a trek through some terraced rice paddies was
made. Other views include a view of Dal Lake near
Srinagar with rows of long houseboats for which it is
famed. Possibly on the Jhelum river, numerous other
hand crafted and covered river boats pass through towns.
In Singapore, then part of the British Crown Colony
known as the Straits Settlements, the officer captures
busy street scenes, the Tanjong Pagar railway station,
and the historic Raffles Hotel which dates back to early
colonial times. Rickshaws are predominant in the streets,
one made in 1904 and still in good form.
In Rangoon (Yangon), Burma, he visits the Shwedagon
Pagoda and the Head Office School of the Young Mens
$575
Buddhist Association (YMBA) founded in 1906.

(AFRICA - SAFARI IN THE SERENGETI)

South Africa Nama People and

Tanzania Maasai Tribes
East Africa, South Africa, circa 1930-1935. Album of
photographs from an indulgent voyage to Africa for a big
game safari in the Serengeti, sailing and touring in Cape,
and a cruise through the Suez Canal, made by about a
dozen English men who spared no expense on their overseas
adventure. 8vo. Oblong album by Bartons Ltd. with the
trademark name Simplico, brown paper boards uniquely
bound with clasped posts, measuring approximately 10.5 x 8
inches. Contains 143 sepia photographs mounted onto 22
cardstock leaves. Photographs vary in sizes, the smallest
being 1.5x 2.5 inches, and the largest just shy of 3 x 5 inches.
Minor creasing to extremities of boards only, otherwise in
Very Good Condition.

The sequence of the images suggests that this voyage

went first to South Africa, where the enthusiastic group
enjoys a sailing adventure in what appears to be
Saldanha Bay, a natural paradise for the water sport
enthusiast still today. From there a grand cruise ship
took them from the Cape to Tanzania for the highlight of
the voyage, a big-game hunting excursion in the
Serengeti guided by Masai hunters, resulting in at least
one sizeable cat captured for prosperity.
In South Africa, the Nama people are photographed in
their village, in front of a hut, together with their
Western visitors. Evidently being gracious hosts, a
young man is seen collecting coconuts for them, and an
elder tends to them at the beach. Further images suggest
that time was spent at a horse ranch. Bearing the date
MCMXXIX (1929) above its entrance, recently
constructed building aids in dating the voyage.
The trophy lioness captured in the Serengeti, hunted and
tied to the front of the lorry, is shown in two
photographs. A group of Masai people stand together in
traditional costume carrying a pastoral wood staffs; a
robust man leads the foreigners on a jungle tour, and a
very young warrior shows his painted face. (Young
Masai warriors will roam the country for a year before
taking their place in the community as men.)
The Administration building of the former Suez Canal
Company, a marketplace in Port Said, an Arab dhow,
and a cart burdened camel conclude the volume.

(AFRICA COAST - TO - COAST)

Namibia to East Africa Plantation of Captain Tom von Prinz

Lderitz (Namibia), Tanga (Tanzania), circa 1930s.
Original photographs taken by a party of German
travellers on a coast-to-coast overland tour of former
German colonies, beginning with the once diamond
prospering town of Lderitz in German South-West
Africa, and ending at Tanga where an important battle
took place in the East African Campaign of the Great
War. 8vo. Album contains 39 black and white
photographs, approximately 4 x 3 inches mounted on
heavy cardstock teal coloured leaves with integral
windows. Also with a cutting from a printed document
commemorating the death of German colonist and
captain Tom von Prince and others during the 1914
battle. Blue cloth illustrated boards, fading at extremities,
otherwise in Very Good Condition.

At the time of this voyage, Namibia was administered

by a dominion of the British Empire. Many Germans
were deported from Lderitz, significantly reducing
population, making these photographs quite rare.
Photographs of Lderitz include the Kapps Konzert und
Ball-Saal (Kapps Concert and Ball Room) founded in
1907, views of Bergstrae (Mountain Street) with the
colonial buildings which form the town's charm today,
the original guesthouse of Krabbenhff und Lampe, so
forth. A busy port appears to be the hub of indigenous
activity, with many Africans in travel clothing, and one
view showing British naval authorities.
After a few days rail travel via Keetmanshoop, a tour
of Tanzania includes Tanga, an important coastal town
in former German East Africa., and the Tanga War
Memorial Cemetery in the south-west part of the city,
including herein a photograph of the pyramid shaped
monument at its entrance. One photograph also shows
the Tongoni ruins, situated 17 km south of Tanga City.
Also captured is native village life in the Usambara
mountains with a collection of thatched huts possibly in
the Magamba Rainforest. A European style residence
and estate, also in the Usambara mountains, may very
well be the 'Sakkarani' plantation of notorious German
subjugator, captain and commissioner Tom von Prince.
A printed leaf mounted in the album commemorates the
captain and his fallen colleagues, listing them by name.

(EGYPT AND PALESTINE)

Outstanding Egypt Photographs

Several Unique Aerial Views
Egypt, Palestine, 1935. Original album of unique aerial
views and several large photographs compiled by an
officer of the Royal Air Force while serving with 45
Squadron to maintain presence and authority in Egypt
and Palestine. Contains 179 photographs, each
captioned in manuscript and mounted with corners onto
23 brown leaves separated with tissue guard. Also with
a clipping of the squadron's camel insignia, and seven
(7) Egyptian postage stamps pasted to inside of front
board, three of which are postally used, four of which
are not. Photographs vary in sizes, the smallest
measuring approximately 2.5 x 3.5 inches, and the
largest 8.25 x 6.25 inches. Oblong Quarto Album, green
cloth string-tied boards, fraying at extremities, loss of
spine, otherwise in Very Good Condition, internally
sound, a uniquely pleasing album of photographs.

Remarkable photographs of RAF Forty-Five Squadron

in Egypt during the interval between the World Wars,
this album boasts a profusion of images, nothing less
than stellar, including many aerial views of iconic
monuments usually only observed from the ground.
A riveting first photograph of Egypt consists of a Fairey
IIIF reconnaissance biplane flying just above cloud level
with its spotter and pilot clearly visible and vulnerable
in its open design.
The region between and inclusive of the Western Desert
and Mersa Matruh, reminiscent of the First World War
British Campaign against Arab and Berber tribes, is
predominant in the volume, seen in approximately 56
photographs. Here images show a wreckage of a Vickers
Valentia aircraft which claimed the life of 7 men, the
very first train to enter Matruh upon opening the Desert
Railway, cruisers at port, a large group photo of No.3
RAF Air Stores squadron, the Sudan camel corps, and a
Senussi tribe encampment. The town of Mersa Matruh
and outlying buildings appear also, while a rudimentary
gravesite, an ancient Arab gateway, and a desolate
railway station pierce the otherwise desolate terrain.
Particularly interesting is a photograph of military tanks
being deployed for the Second Italo-Ethiopian War
which was currently, and one of the Gloster Regiment
marching away from Mersa Matruh after the war.
14

Over a dozen photographs are taken in the environs of

Helwan in May 1935, including cityscape views, the
RAF Camp, and a perfect formation of bi-planes and
pilots commemorating the squadron, all captured while
flying overhead. Native mud huts with flat straw roofs
and Egyptians filling clay jugs in the Nile are
photographed up close from the ground.
Twenty-nine (29) photographs illustrate the city of
Ismailia and the RAF camp there, some specifically
dated June 1935. These feature the mooring mast erected
for the ill-fated R101 rigid airship, an unusually clear
view of the First World War memorial to unknown
soldiers, a bust of Ferdinand de Lesseps, views of the
Suez Canal, various aircraft, and a horse-drawn gharry.
Egyptian custom and traditional labour is portrayed in
14 striking images fromAlexandria showing street
merchants, furniture makers, tailors sewing by hand,
brass workers, and a butcher. City streets and historic
buildings are also photographed, as is a view of the
palace of King Farouk, and the RAF camp at Aboukir
(Abu Qir) only fourteen miles northeast of the city.
Antiquity is seen in photographs of a Roman cave and
storehouse excavated by archaeologists in the Western
Desert, remnants of a Roman marble and limestone
pavement mosaic in Alexandria, a most unusual view of
the Edfu Temple largely under water during Nile flood
season, an equally rare perspective of the Great Sphinx
of Giza and its surroundings from a vantage point that
only an aircraft can provide, and an enchanting view of
the pyramids. Nine (9) photographs are taken at Sakkara
or Saqqara, the vast necropolis for ancient Memphis,
featuring detailed wall reliefs inside the tomb of
Akhethotep and Ptahhotep, where cameras are now
prohibited. Other photographs include a military parade
in Cairo, a Bedouin village and oasis, a ferry on the at
Suez Canal at El Kantara, a steamship on the Nile, etc.
As well as in Egypt, 19 photographs are from Jerusalem,
Palestine, then part of the short-lived British
Protectorate Trans-Jordania. These include the Jaffa
Gate, the Damascus Gate entrance to the Old City, the
Mount of Olives and Garden of Gethsemane, the Tower
of David, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Mosque
of Omar, the Wailing Wall, views of the Dead Sea and $975
River Jordan.

(WWII EGYPT TRANSJORDAN)

Warrant Officer Eric Stow, RAF Henlow

British RAF Officer in Palestine and Jordan

Reconnaissance and Ground Control
Palestine, Egypt, 1929-34. Oblong Folio Album. Original
photograph album of Warrant Officer Eric Stow of RAF
Henlow, covering five years of service for Britain's Royal
Air Force. Contains 196 photographs, most black and
white, a few sepia, each captioned in manuscript, and
neatly mounted with corners onto 24 black cardstock
leaves separated with webbed tissue guard. The majority
of the photographs measure approximately 6 x 10cm; six
vary in size, the largest of these measure 16 x 21cm. Also
features a series of 8 professionally printed and titled
photographic cards of Luxor, mounted in the same
fashion. Blue crocodile-styled leather boards, string-tied
and in original state. Wear to extremities, first tissue
guard lacking, otherwise in Very Good condition, with
solid spine and beautiful vivid photographs.

Remarkable photographs of RAF Two-Sixteen

Squadron in Arab and Jewish territory, specifically in
the short-lived British Protectorate of Trans-Jordania
and also in Egypt, between the two World Wars.
RAF highlights include splendid images of equipment
employed by the regiment, on the ground and in the air,
such as the Rolls Royce Armoured Car (RRAC), the
Crossley Armoured Car. Armoured vehicles were
evidently affected by the extreme conditions, often in
the mud flats of the Transjordan. Of aviation interest we
find the Vickers Victorias bomber bi-planes in flight and
fallen in the desert. A full page image shows an Imperial
Airways Fokker-styled Avro Ten G-ABLU Apollo. A
British mooring mast erected in Ismalia for the R101
rigid airship, the largest blimp at the time, in its early
testing stages one year prior to its fateful and final flight.
Photographs of antiquity are dispersed throughout,
including twenty-two stellar photographs of Petra.
Beautiful images show streets and scenes in Alexandria
and Cairo. Scant few glimpses of indigenous life are
captured, including a 'Desert Arab Policeman' sporting a
machine gun and ammunition.
A pleasing album of Air Force men undertaking
reconnaissance efforts and testing aviation equipment
amidst the ever-coveted Holy Land, and throughout
Egypt, which concludes with officers in formal uniform
seeing the final draft off in 1934.

Stanley Worton, Squadron Leader

Zulu Tribe Villages and Victoria Falls

Zimbabwe, South Africa, circa 1943-1945. Two albums
containing 409 photographs combined, plus 11 separate
large format photographs, altogether forming a visual
chronicle of the life and service of RAF Squadron Leader
Stanley Worton who was stationed in Africa during
WWII, mostly in Zimbabwe. The Africa album contains
210 photographs, the majority from Zimbabwe, varying
in size from 2.75 x 4.5 inches to 2.25 x 2.25 inches. The
personal album contains 199 family related photographs,
a few from the start of the officer's career, also of various
sizes, and a newspaper clipping of his funeral in 1963
pasted to the front board. The separate set of 11 images
are from Zimbabwe and Victoria Falls, and measure
approximately 8 x 6 inches. Two oblong 8vo. string-tied
albums, one with brown giraffe-spotted cloth boards, the
other in a vibrant green cloth with black spine. Both
albums with shelf wear to extremities, otherwise the lot in
Very Good Condition.

The photographs are mostly taken in Zimbabwe and

feature spectacular images of Zulu village inhabitants,
and numerous views of Victoria Falls. Especially
striking are 15 photographs neatly featured at the center
of the album, taken at a Zulu village of traditional round
mud and straw huts with conical thatched roofs,
showing Zulu dancers in full costume, eccentric hair
styles for the women, and families posing at their
homestead for the photographer.
The officer went to Gweru, Hahare, possibly Benoni,
and also made a rail journey to the African Great Lakes
Region. Enchanted by the Victoria Falls and its gorges,
the officer takes no less than 27 photographs of it, 6 of
Lake Victoria including a covered tour boat cruising the
shoreline, 2 views of an old power plant and dam, and
yet more of the expansive and varied surroundings. And,
an officer sits at the foot of the Livingstone Memorial at
Victoria Falls, the first statue on the Zimbabwean side.
A hangar seen at the beginning of the album may be the
Benoni aerodrome where the South African Air Force
trained their pilots during World War II. A funeral takes
place at the Benoni cemetery. In Gwelo (Gweru) we see
the quaint town square and clock tower.

assistants, he filmed one especially dramatic sandstorm.
His beautifully illustrated firsthand account was
published in his book titled "Mit Sven Hedin durch
Asiens Wsten, nach dem Tagebuch des Filmoperateurs
der Expedition, Paul Lieberenz" [With Sven Hedin
Across the Deserts of Asia...]
Lieberenz founded his own production company for
cultural films, or popular-scientific documentaries, and
published written accounts of his experiences in
different countries.

Henry S. Reynolds, American Navy Officer

China, Singapore, and Malaysia

At the Start of the Chinese Civil War
Asia, 1927. Large oblong quarto album containing 165
photographs of China, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and
the Philippines, 31 photographic postcards, numerous
ephemeral items relating to the voyages in between, and
10 used postal stamps from the Straits Settlement.
Photographs range in size, the smallest being 5,5 x 4 cm
and the largest being 11,5 x 8,5 cm. Some are sliver
gelatin, others are sepia prints. A meticulously organized
volume with images detailed and dated in manuscript in a
neat English hand. Black cloth boards, 34 x 26 x 3 cm,
string-tied, showing exterior wear, otherwise in Very
Good Condition.

American navy officer Henry S. Reynolds, the author of

this work, is an avid seafarer with a keen interest in
navigation, as seen in the numerous vessels
photographed in the Far East harbours, and the
complexity of his travels consisting of innumerable
cruises between port cities of Asia and SE Asia. His
visit to China took place during the Chinese Civil War,
which had begun on 12 April 1927 only 6 weeks before
his arrival at Shanghai.
Throughout his tours in Asia, busy streets are mixed
with trolleys, rickshaws, turn of the century lorries,
pedestrians, and, in Shanghai, the occasional British
tank. The international significance of Shanghai's
harbour and Whangpoo River is cleverly highlighted
with photographs of US transports and destroyers,
British cruisers, warships, and airplane carriers,
traditional Chinese junks, and war vessels from Japan,
Italy, and Holland. Political tension and civil unrest can
be seen in city scenes, with a barbed wire gate at the
entrance of the French Concession and the International
Settlement, a sandbag shelter on the Bund, the US Navy
marching down Nanking Road, and numerous warships
anchored in Whangpoo. Approximately one month is
spent in Shanghai, dispersed with a one visit to Macao
where Reynolds attended a horse race. Two panoramic
views are neatly assembled, one showing a view of the
Hong Kong harbour seen from the Peak, the other
showing Repulse Bay. (Shanghai is seen in 45
photographs, 3 photographic postcards, and 1 large print
illustration. Macao is shown in 13 photographs and 4
print illustrations).
20

The 30th of June announces arrival in Singapore on the

SS Mantua. Staying for several weeks, at the historic
Raffles Hotel and the Adelphi Hotel, views here show
ox carts and rickshaws, colonial buildings and retailers
established Battery Road, Raffles Place, and Cavenagh
Bridge, built in 1870 to commemorate Singapore's new
Crown colony of the Straits Settlements status, the
oldest bridge in Singapore, and standing today in its
original form. River scenes taken from the bridge
capture endless rows of thatched-roof covered rafts and
merchants loading crates of cargo. A lovely and rare
photographic postcard illustrates the Central Police
Station which was rebuilt in grand style 1920. A visit is
made to the Chinese quarter, to a Malay mosque, and at
least one Buddhist temple. In the streets he captures
photographs of Sikh soldiers, snake charmers and a very
young produce vendor. (33 photographs are taken in
Singapore; 3 postcards, 1 paper illustration, and 1 opera
prospectus are further collected).
Two photographs are taken at sea going from Singapore
to Penang. From Johor, we find images of the causeway,
a Malay village on stilts, the Sultan Abu Bakar State
Mosque, and sacred monkeys. Fort Cornwallis, temples,
Chinese mansions, and luxurious hotels are seen in
Penang. At Kuala Lumpur he photographs the Station
Hotel, the Batu caves, and a Tamil girl collecting rubber.
(Malaysia is seen in 28 photographs and 8 photographic
postcards - 7 views in Johor, 20 in Penang, and 9 in
Kuala Lumpur).
In Manila, the traveller obtains a fifteen-day pass to the
Army and Navy Club, and enjoys a river excursion to
experience the Pagsanjan Gorge, rapids and waterfall,
and evidently attends a ball. Two postcard images of
Miss Philippines, Anita Noble of Batangas are included
herein. Two days, Nov 29 to Dec 1, are spent at the
Baguio Summer Resort, where he takes 17 photos,
encompassing also the nearby Antamok mines. Seven
photographs are taken of the Igorrotes (Igolots), the
largest group of semi-independent Malay peoples of the
Philippine Islands, demonstrating their customs. (From
the Philippines there are 26 photographs, 3 postcards,
army and navy ephemera, and a landing passport. There
are 6 photographs and the calling card signatures of four
geishas from excursions to Japan).

(WWII PACIFIC WAR CHINA - PHILIPPINES)

US Navy Officer, USS Virginia

Corporal Punishment Photographs

Invasion of the Philippines - China
The Philippines, China, 1944 - 1945. Vivid photographs
of US Navy Battle Fleet involvement in the Pacific War
against the Japanese, in the Philippines, the South
China Sea, and the city of Xiamen, compiled by a US
Navy officer from the lead battleship USS Virginia,
whose 102 original photographs provide a rare primary
source, and alarming images of earlier Chinese corporal
punishment. Together with 15 postcards, seven being
photographic views of China, one describing the Great
Wall, and eight being satirical cartoons relating to the
war.
Photographs vary in size, the smallest being 2.25 x 3.25
inches, the larger ones 3.5 x 5.5 inches, and one full page
photograph of the crew 10.5 x 5.75 inches. Photographs
are mounted to 14 black album cardstock leaves, placed
loosely in a leather album, covers handcrafted by the
'National Art Novelty' studio in Los Angeles. Oblong
quarto, with hand carved naval motif of a voyage to
Panama on the USS West Virginia in 1930 just prior to
her assignment in the Pacific War, illustrated and
painted by an artist, with original patterned satin
endpapers and wrap around snapping closure. Together
with 30 original signatures on two leaves, of fellow
officers of the USS Virginia, dated 3/2/1930. Leafs
tattered at edges, otherwise in Very Good Condition
with a stellar illustration. The lot housed in an archival
folder for extra protection.

The album features 10 disturbing images of decapitation

and murder executed in China, taken at the scene by a
professional photographer during or shortly after the
Boxer Rebellion, each with embedded manuscript
caption. Shocking scenes of corporal punishment, often
for petty crimes, include a death by stretching, a shortrange shooting execution, severed heads displayed on
bricks, and an executioner preparing for a beheading by
'slow slicing' (lngch) which was banned in 1905.
A public display of multiple beheadings to previously
dismembered men is being observed by women and
even young children; and small crates containing human
heads are hung in public streets for display.

22

Especially interesting are war scenes from Amoy (now

Xiamen) in China, in January and February 1945 when
USS West Virginia was operating in the South China Sea
defending US carrier ships against Japanese attacks.
[Xiamen had been under occupation by the Japanese since
May 1938 and would remain so until September 1945.]
Battle scenes include rolling cannons, espionage from a
hilltop, a railway station overtaken by a horse-back
cavalry, large sandbag barricades, and fallen aircraft.
Several Japanese Imperial Navy Vickers Crossley M25
Armored Cars are seen patrolling the streets, while
Chinese soldiers run in large groups to defend their city
and nation. An important Chinese General donning the
WW2 Chinese Nationalist Forces cap with badge
(Kuomintang, KMT) is photographed, while another
Chinese officer is mounted on a beautiful white horse. A
distant view of a lighthouse at Amoy is taken from the
USS Virginia, as well as a row of Chinese junks with
covered quarters, whose passengers inquisitively observe
the photographer above them.
Naval war vessels photographed whilst on board the USS
Virginia in 1944 and 1945 show the immense US
battleships in formation rapidly cruising to participate in
the 'Liberation of the Philippines'.

Whilst in the Philippines, the officer captures indigenous

custom as the opportunities arose, in particular some
curious elevated thatched dwellings, a festive parade float,
a quaint harbor, a seaside village, and an example of
ancient Spanish architecture. [Japanese occupation of the
Philippines occurred between 1942 and 1945.]
USS West Virginia was stationed in San Pedro Bay to
provide shore bombardment against targets in the
Tacloban area of Leyte, sending heavy gunfire on the
Japanese in the vicinity of Tacloban in the Philippines.
During the Battle of Leyte Gulf, she led the battle line.
Continuing with the Philippines operations until February
1945, she took on board survivors from the destroyer
Twiggs, entered the South China Sea to defend from
Japanese air attacks, and patrolled the Lingayen Gulf.
A fascinating visual testimony to barbarity occurring at
the turn of the twentieth century, as well as critical
advancements of American battleships to support the
liberty of Chinese and Philippine allies.

(1930s WEST INDIES SUGAR BOURGEOISIE)

Dominican Republic - Jamaica - Cuba

Plantation Owners and Labourers
Dominican Republic, West Indies, circa 1939-40. An
original photograph album of an affluent sugar industry
tycoon who was closely connected with the notorious
Innes family of the Mount Grace plantation in Jamaica,
views centered mainly in the Dominican Republic during
the oppressive era of Rafael Trujillo who ruled from 1927
to 1961, with some views from Cuba and Jamaica.

6.5 x 4.75 inches and two thirds 2.5 x 3.5 inches. 8vo.

rudimentary tape reinforcement to front, otherwise in
very good condition.

The compiler of this album was a plantation owner who

possessed a sizeable residence and estate in Kingston,
Jamaica. A persons focused album, his workers and
house servants are identified in photographs. He is
connected with several other European exploiters of
Caribbean sugar, coffee, or tobacco, whom he also
names in captions. Of particular interest however, and
frequently seen in the album is a David I [Innes], a
descendant of the early Scottish settlers in the West
Indies, owners the Mount Grace plantation in Hanover,
Jamaica. Other names include Joe [Joseph] Schwartz,
John Richeimer, Charlie Gordon, Max Roderiguez, and
from Potosi city, Bolivia a Mr. W.B. Steveson.

about 1920 the first sugar plantation was established.
The majority of the photographs are taken in the
Dominican Republic, in the provinces of Barahona, La
Altagracia, San Cristbal and National District. Horses
are the primary mode of transportation seen in these
images, occasionally pulling wagons, as Trujillo's road
network did not yet reach the rural plantation regions.
From Salvalen de Higey a party of men make a
horseback journey to Juanillo, and to the fishing bay of
Boca de Yuma. A group of native inhabitants are
photographed at Jina Jaragu. Other views are from
Enriquilla and in Ciudad Trujillo (previously Santo
Domingo) not long after the bloody Rio Massacre, and

James A. R. Adams (A.R.P.S.)

Traditional Labours of Ceylon

Rubber Trees - Elephants - Tea Harvest
Ceylon, circa 1947-1948. Set of 99 glass slides, black and
white photographs taken by award-winning photographer
James A. R. Adams (A.R.P.S.). Contained in the original
box. The lot in very good condition, crisp striking images.

In numerous fascinating photographs we see the

harvesting tea buds, the tapping of a Par rubber tree, a
man on stilts seeding his crop, another mounting
permanent rope rings to a palm tree to harvest coconuts, a
group of people building a large structure with bamboo
walls and a straw roof, various means of fishing
including the traditional cone-shaped fish trap made of
woven sticks, a man carrying two large stick cages
which appear to house crocodiles, a clay worker with
pots and bricks, a man dispensing rolled prayer cloths.
Cattle are employed to perform such rural tasks as
preparing a field for planting, carrying cargo, etc.
Photos capture a very tall bullock cart pulled by two
oxen, children washing cattle in a river.
Exceptionally interesting are the photographs featuring
elephants, five in all, one in which an elephant in chains is
leaning submissively toward his master, another in which
the elephant is lifting the same person with its leg so that
the man can mount him. Also lovely are the simple
handcrafted catamarans for ocean travel, the padda boats
or river houseboats, and a water-filled terraced rice-field.
Scenes from what appears to old town Colombo, perhaps
York Street, show vendors selling produce from a box laid
simply on the ground. A scant few photographs provide a
glimpse of British presence in the country. Looking
closely we see English salons, hotels, a train trolley and
service station.
There are also several remarkable photos of antiquity,
Buddhist shrines, delapidated monuments, stupas, and
ruins of the sacred city Anuradhapura, the Vatadage and
city Polonnaruwa, and the rock fortress of Sigiriya. Of
special notice are two of the legendary moonstone steps,
the Statue of King Parakramabahu, the Lankatilaka
temple, the circular Polonnaruwa Vatadage, and, at
Sigiriya, a beautiful colour fresco and the lion's paw rock
carving at the entrance of the Lion Rock Citadel.

(GLASS LANTERN SLIDES - EGYPT)

Immense Set of 534 Unique Images

Voyage to Egypt and the Holy Land

With a Tour of Pompeii and Athens
Voluminous set of 534 glass lantern slides, black and
white photographs taken circa 1932-1935 by an English
traveller on a luxurious voyage to Egypt and the Near
East for a tour of ancient civilizations. Each glass slide
measures approximately 8cm x 8cm Most are numbered,
referencing an index of titles. The lot in very good and
condition, contained in 9 contemporary wooden boxes.

A commendable and exhaustive display of relics and

monuments from ancient Roman, Greek, Byzantine,
Egyptian, and Ottoman Empires captures achievements
of masterful ingenuity and evidence of supreme power.
The enviable summer voyage to Egypt and the Near East
also made stops in the Mediterranean, antiquity being
the principal attraction and the highlight being Pompeii.
This traveller's timeless pictorial sketch, in over 500
photographs, is one of magnitude and fine detail.

Customs of a world of centuries past still holding strong,

unconcerned with Western ways, scenes of a seemingly
disencumbered indigenous lifestyle include outdoor
markets, simple garments, handcrafted homes, random
gatherings and distant sojourns. Industrialization had
begun in major centers as we see amidst horse-drawn
carts, the occasional motor car, a photo of Lloyds
Triestino in Trieste, hotels to welcome foreigners, and
construction of a railway and a dam. He was also keen
enough to capture a photograph of a fellow traveller of
notable repute, Sir William Tindall Lister, London M.D.
(1868-1944) who was on the same journey.
Far too many to list, the collection is replete with views
of citadels, ruined pillars or columns, obelisks, statues
and rock carvings, spectacular dome structures, and
early architecture. In Egypt, they tour Cairo, Alexandria,
Luxor, Aswan, and Karnak in Thebes. Amidst views of
the Pyramids and Great Sphinx of Giza on the west bank
of the Nile, the Abu Simbel temples of ancient Nubia,
and the like, a scant few indicate ongoing efforts of
restoration. In the Holy Land, or The Levant, views
center around Jerusalem and Bethlehem, the cradle of
civilization and the land incessantly coveted by many.
A unique set of privately taken images!

(GLASS LANTERN SLIDES SOUTH AFRICA)

Transvaal in the Second Boer War

Durban - Pretoria - Cape Town
Transvaal, Natal 1899-1902; Cape Town circa 1929.
Fascinating collection of 45 glass lantern slides of South
Africa feature Transvaal and Natal during and after the
Second Boer War, together with glass lantern slides of Cape
Town a few years later. Glass slides measure approximately
8 x 8 cm. Most are black and white photographic images;
with exception of a few which are sketch illustrations, one of
these being a map. Some with captions and dates. Several
are from a numbered series by Newton & Co. in London,
evinced by trademark and seller's labels. Some of the others
bear the marking of 'Artco S.A.R.' to bottom right corner.
The lot in Very Good Condition, contained in a wooden box
with working metal clasps.

'Transvaal at War' and 'Transvaal in Peace' state the

captions on the numbered trademarked series views,
which present crisp images of the Second Boer War,
primarily British regiments fighting their cause in the
field and on horse-back. As seen in one glass slide
illustration, during the later stages of the war, the British
pursued the policy of rounding up and isolating Boer
civilians into concentration camps, one of the earliest
uses of this method by modern powers. The wives and
children of Boer guerrillas were sent to these camps,
which had poor hygiene and little food. Many died.
Also photographed is the monument to the 'Troopers of
the Imperial Light Horse' at Waggon Hill. The colonial
light horse and mounted infantry were part of the force
that met the Boer attack at Ladysmith on 6 January
1900. Another image pertaining to this battle is
captioned 'On the march to Ladysmith.' The Battle of
Colenso is represented with an illustration headed
"Attacking Fort Wylie." Following the war, scenes of
tranquility are captured in Durban, Pretoria, Cape Town.
Cape Town views , circa 1929, illustrate development
and cultural integration. A mail steamer is photographed
as is the first cable car which was launched 4 Oct 1929.
In contrast, authentic African culture was being retained
at least by some, with 3 images from the Valley of the
Thousand Hills in Natal, showing a round straw hut, a
kraal, and a chief and his family at his dome-shaped
$750
thatched home.

(1909 NIGERIA - COLONIAL ADMINISTRATORS)

Sir Egerton, Walter

Original Glass Plate Negatives of Nigeria

With Colonial Camera
[Nigeria, circa 1909.] Collection of 13 glass plate negatives
of a mission in West Africa, in the environs of Freetown,
possibly at Sapele, near Lagos. Slides measure
approximately 16 x 12cm, each individually contained in a
plastic sleeve for protection. Nine (9) of these are
accompanied by a photographic print of its image, affixed
to the negative. Photographs measure (9 X 13cm).
Together with an original, period wooden folding camera
with leather carry strap, working brass hinges and dials,
clean lens with round brass frame. Negatives,
photographs, and camera are all in very good condition,
beautifully preserved.

A party of eleven poses together on a vessel's deck on

the voyage to Nigeria, via Britain's first West African
colony, Sierra Leone. The men and women appear to be
current and future administrators of the colony, in the
era of Bishop James Johnson, and Herbert Samuel
Heelas Macaulay, the latter of whom opposed British
rule. These include Sir Walter Egerton, governor of
Southern Nigeria from 1904 to 1912, and possibly Sir
Ralph Denham Rayment Moor - first high commissioner
of the British Southern Nigeria Protectorate from 1900
to 1903.
The remainder of the images focus on a tour of a
Christian Missionary Society (CMS) settlement near
Lagos, possibly at Sapele. Here we see a large
traditional African straw hut structure, as well as new
developments by the British colonists, including simple
wooden homes surrounded by a typical Western culture
post-and-wire fences, a sizeable church, and a large
mission house which was built to the exact likeness of
the consulate office established at Sapele by the British
government in 1891. Views indicate that the
missionaries had been settled at this particular location
for at some time, having brought ample building
supplies over a few years. Integration of European
culture is also seen in the colonial clothing worn by the
African women.
Walter Egerton KCMG (1858-1947) had a long career in
the administration of the British Empire, holding a
number of senior positions including the Governorships
of Lagos Colony (1903-06) Southern Nigeria (1906-12)
and British Guiana (1912-17).

(1890 Vancouver, BC - Canada)

Early Development of Vancouver

1890 Panorama of the North Shore
Vancouver: circa 1890-1900. Two Photographs
measuring approximately 10 x 18cm (4x7 inches) and a
photographic postcard measuring approximately 8 x
53cm (3x21inches), mounted with recent archival
matting. The photographs and the postcard are in very
good condition.

View include two original photographs of Vancouver

looking towards the North Shore, circa 1890, and a
large panoramic photo type postcard of Vancouver, also
looking towards the North Shore, circa 1900.
These images give an interesting depiction of the early
development of Vancouver, which was on 6 April 1886,
the same year that the first transcontinental train arrived.
"The settlement which came to be called Gastown grew
up quickly around the original makeshift tavern
established by "Gassy" Jack Deighton in 1867 on the
edge of the Hastings Mill property. In 1870, the colonial
government surveyed the settlement and laid out a town
site, renamed "Granville" in honour of the then-British
Secretary of State for the Colonies, Lord Granville. This
site, with its natural harbour, was eventually selected as
the terminus for the Canadian Pacific Railway to the
disappointment of Port Moody, New Westminster and
Victoria, all of which had vied to be the railhead. A
railway was among the inducements for British
Columbia to join the Confederation in 1871, but the
Pacific Scandal and arguments over the use of Chinese
labour delayed construction until the 1880s.
CPR president William Van Horne arrived in Port
Moody to establish the CPR terminus recommended by
Henry John Cambie, and gave the city its name in
honour of George Vancouver. The Great Vancouver Fire
on 13 June 1886, razed the entire city. The Vancouver
Fire Department was established that year and the city
quickly rebuilt. Vancouver's population grew from a
settlement of 1,000 people in 1881 to over 20,000 by the
turn of the century and 100,000 by 1911." (Wikipedia)

Photographische Gesellschaft" who invented

Pera, probably taken from the Galata Tower.
The scroll measures circa 25 x 155 cm.
The panorama measures circa 20 146 cm.

the minarets of the many famous mosques.
In the 1800s, Pera (Beyoglu) was the
newer, predominantly European district of
Constantinople, where embassies were
built. Foreign merchants lived, worked,
and shopped at the posh boutiques along
the Grande Rue. This was also one of the
neighbourhoods favoured by the sultan's
Jewish subjects and still has a few
beautiful small synagogues.

(SUDAN - BIG GAME)

Lt-Col Henry C. Brocklehurst

Sudan and East Africa

Game Warden on a Safari
[Sudan, 1927-1928] Oblong Folio. A massive Album of
four Englishmen on a big game safari, with many views of
indigenous life. Contains 143 original mounted black and
white photographs, each captioned in a most elegant
hand, and mounted double sided onto 23 heavy cardstock
leaves, plus 1 additional wide angle sepia view loosely
inserted. Photographs vary slightly in size, the smallest
being approximately 10,5 x 6cm and the largest 13,5 x
8cm, and the single loose image 26 x 14cm. Lovely binding
by Kodak S.A. of Egypt, half calf over green morocco, five
raised bands, marbled endpapers, solid spine with silver
button-styled posts, measuring 46 x 30 x 6 cm, very slight
rubbing to boards, otherwise in very good condition.

An unidentified young English chap puts forth a

commendable visual record of a hunting adventure in
the 1920s with 'Tony' who is his age, 'Cyril' who bears
likeness to the British classical scholar and author Cyril
Bailey 1871-1957, 'Lillie' and 'Brock' whom are a
generation their elder. Enthusiastically consumed, he
absorbs the cultural experience through interaction with
the Sudanese people, whom we see in many images.
It appears that he had the distinct opportunity to
accompany Captain Henry Brocklehurst on this
expedition, whom he calls 'Brock.' An important figure
in Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, Brocklehurst was an RFC
pilot, for ten years named Game Warden of the Sudan,
author of " Animals of the Sudan...," published in 1931.
The album begins with the travellers arriving by rail
from at Wadi Halfa, on Lake Nubia, and features a view
of the Abu Simbel rock temples. The game hunting
expedition finally begins, with a sizeable lot of warriorlooking men, scarcely clothed but ready to endure the
most laborious tasks of such an undertaking. Even the
youngest hunters, had a servant assigned to them alone.
The album's creator is carried in a sedan chair by "my
boys at Lokil" to the town of Torit, at the foot of the
Imatong Mountain Range. The album abounds with
images of various African tribes, Dinka and Shilluk
people mostly. Also plentiful are the prized trophies buffalo, gazelle, rhinoceros, warthog and lion, and a few
images of roaming elephants. A visual feast!
