A.

INTRODUCTION
Before talking about maxim and conversational implicature in the
further discussion, the researcher would like to inform a little about what
pragmatics is. Pragmatics is a systematic way of explaining language use
in context. It seeks to explain aspects of meaning which cannot be found
in the plain sense of words or structures, as explained by semantics. From
this very basic definition, we can say that pragmatics is a way chosen by
people to tell what the speakers are intended to, for then to be
investigated by the hearer. There are several studies of pragmatics,
including the maxim and conversational implicature. Those are the topic
that the researcher is going to analyze in some certain conversations
shown in a talk show, that is, Beauty and Azis episode 3.
1. Maxim
Paul Grice proposes that in ordinary conversation, speakers and
hearers share a cooperative principle. Speakers shape their utterances to
be understood by hearers. The principle can be explained by four
underlying rules or maxims. (David Crystal calls them conversational
maxims. They are also sometimes named Grice's or Gricean maxims.)
They are the maxims of quality, quantity, relevance and manner.

Quality: speakers should be truthful. They should not say what they
think is false, or make statements for which they have no evidence.
Quantity: a contribution should be as informative as is required for
the conversation to proceed. It should be neither too little, nor too
much. (It is not clear how one can decide what quantity of
information satisfies the maxim in a given case.)

Relevance: speakers' contributions should relate clearly to the


purpose of the exchange.

Manner: speakers' contributions should be perspicuous: clear,


orderly and brief, avoiding obscurity and ambiguity

2. Conversational Impicature
The conversational implicature is a message that is not found in the
plain sense of the sentence. The speaker implies it. The hearer is able to
infer (work out, read between the lines) this message in the utterance, by
appealing to the rules governing successful conversational interaction.

Grice proposed that implicatures like the second sentence can be


calculated from the first, by understanding three things:

The usual linguistic meaning of what is said.


Contextual information (shared or general knowledge).

The assumption that the speaker is obeying what Grice calls the
cooperative principle.

3. Beauty and Azis


Is a comedy talk show hosted by Azis Gagap and co-host Rianti
Cartwright. As a comedy talk show, Beauty and Azis has a lot of jokes in
interviewing the guess and there will be also a bunch of properties used in
the show. While Azis is joking a lot and being not serious, Rianti keeps the
plot of the show in the right way. It is kind of usual talk show with extra
comedy and surprising moment here and there.
B. RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1. What are the violated maxims exist in Beauty and Azis Talk Show?
2. What is the conversational implicature exist in the beauty and Azis
Talk show?

C. DATA COLLECTION
Data was got by downloading the video Beauty and Azis episode 3,
and then make the transcript of the conversations including Indra Birowo
as the guest star.

: Nah buat kang Indra nih. Katanya bapak dulu seorang tentara ya?

D. ANALYSIS

: Yaaabalik lagi di Beauty and Azisdan juga.

: Amiinnterus?

Here, Indra did the maxim of manner violation. His utterance has
ambiguity. It could be also violated maxim of relevance involved, although
there was no exchange on it. He might be had an intention to make a joke
or he thanked to God because that segment is still exist, considering the
previous segment that had some troubles. That could be the
conversational implicature.

: Etepuk tangan dulu dong buat Indra Birowo..! Apa kabar om?

: Ntar dulu, buka dulu ya disini gerah, soalnya dari tadi bolak balik
mati.
Again, Indra did the violated of maxim relevance. He did not answer
Riantis question properly and just asked for taking his jacket off. The
conversational implicature is that he can not hold the feeling of hot and
sweaty, perhaps.

In this conversation, Azis did the violated maxim of manner due to his
exchange that was not in the right order. Indra has not answered the
question yet, and Azis just struck it, which is a fault. He should let Indra
finish it first, in order to reach the right order. Here, Azis conversational
implicature was just to make a joke, since it is a good one in some others
talk show.
On the other hand, Indra did violence too. He broke the maxim of quantity.
Instead of answering the question with the proper information, he also put
some extra ones that irrelevant. The conversational implicature is that
Indra would like to tell that he was on business of being guest star in
many talk shows.

Here, Indra broke the maxim of quantity, because he added some


irrelevant information. This conversational implicature is that Indra was
trying to persuade the other people to watch it on youtube, because it
was a long time movie, or he just wanted to make a joke about his movie,
that would bring him to the violation of maxim of quality due to untruthful
information he gave. The movie might not be found in youtube, and it has
no evidence of it.

: D Bijis, lu tau bijis itu apa?

: Ah, jorok ah.

Azis did the violation of maxim of relevance, because he replied the


question with irrelevant information. Although, he kind of realize about
what Bijis is, he did not answer the yes-no question from Rianti. The
conversational implicature is that Azis did realize about the term of Bijis,
and he thought that it is a dirty thing, and actually it is.

The violation of maxim of quality occurs here, in Indras. Indra replied the
question with false information because it is no proof that he did 100
times piss on this movie, since it is a horror movie. The conversational
implicature is that Indra tried to make a joke, and he had no intention to
tell about what 105 actually is. So, he kept this secret with joke, till the
movie is released.

Violation happened again, by Indras answer. Indra broke the maxim of
quantity and quality at once. For quantity, Indra replied with long extra
information, which is combined with unthruthful information about the
salary of being cameo compare with the main star, that make a violation
of maxim of quality. Conversational implicature shown here is Indra tried
to defend himself of the provocation given by Azis in a funny way.

Indra did the violated maxim of relevance, because his it was not related
to the question Azis aked, although rather flouted with Riantis. The
conversational implicature is that he had no artist heredity, because once
he just wanted to be a soldier like his father.

Here Indra did again violated maxim of quantity, but also rather maxim of
manner. First is because he answered with some extra information, second
is because he did not answer orderly, that made the answer like a mess.
Conversational implicature here is that Indra emphasized to tell that his
father just did not trust in Indras mentality.

E. CONCLUTION
Researcher concludes that in the conversation above, the violation
is various and the intensity is just average for every violated maxim, and
those are spread in many parts. But remember that Beauty and Azis is a
comedy talk show, the violated maxim of relevance and quantity will
always occur, or even the combination of several violated maxim. The

others are indeed occurred, and they give contribution too toward the
number of violated maxim.
