Electrical / System diagnosis

Back to Electrical
As a result of the constant growth in the complexity of
systems in our cars, it has become increasingly more
difficult to establish a focused diagnosis. In order to simplify
this situation, the system diagnosis has been developed and
was used for the first time on the new SL (R230).
The system diagnosis features its own diagnostic knowledge
(on-board knowledge base)
Location
In contrast to the R230, the system diagnosis function has
been integrated in the central gateway (CGW) control
module. The CGW is located below the steering column.
At the time of market launch of the W211, the system
diagnosis, as on the R230, initially checks the control
modules and peripherals connected to the CAN-B (interior
databus).
With the 1st Modification Year practically all of the control
modules connected to the CAN-C (with the exception of
DTR and SBC) will then also be monitored.
Note regarding DAS functionality:
The system diagnosis function on the W211 is integrated in
the quick-test. (In comparison to the R230, CAN and ATA
information are available in the "control module" system
diagnosis as well as under the functions.)

Tasks of system diagnosis:

Analyzing and, as need be, summarizing the fault codes to form a diagnosis result.
In addition, establishing an assignment to functions affected and to suspected components
The system diagnosis may propose further system tests in order to pinpoint the fault.
Checking the CAN for fault instances.
Checking the actual/set configuration of the control modules fitted.
Recording reason for ATA activation together with freeze frame data.
System function:
As the car is being driven, the system permanently monitors faults and pinpoints them as
necessary. This operates as follows:
A control module determines a malfunction and generates a fault message which is
communicated over the CAN.
After the fault message is received, the system diagnosis analyzes the relevant process
variables, making use of the on-board knowledge base.
If further fault messages are received in the system diagnosis, these are likewise stored and
are used for further refinement of the fault image.
Determining the suspected components and functions affected.
Aims of system diagnosis:
Recording fault messages in the vehicle and conducting an analysis of the faults already onboard.
Establishing interrelationship of fault code, to the extent possible, and forming a diagnosis
result if possible.
Stating functions affected as well as suspected components in relation to the fault
code/diagnosis result.
What particular points have to be noted when replacing a control module?
If the CGW is replaced...
the system diagnosis in the CGW must be programmed using the STAR Diagnosis.
If control modules at the
the system diagnosis itself attempts to adapt to any new control module versions. If this
CAN-B are replaced...
does not prove successful, the system diagnosis sets a fault. It is then necessary to reprogram the on-board knowledge base using the STAR Diagnosis.
