Lesson l
BASIC CHRISTIAN BELIEFS

GOD

This lesson is our first in a series of studies on Basic Christian Beliefs. During this series
we will study what the Bible teaches about such important topics as God, Christ, the Holy Spirit,
salvation, the home, and many others.
Our first lesson is the most basic of all: What does the Bible teach about God? Often it
is said, "The Bible does not try to prove the existence of God; it is just taken for granted." But it
is not altogether true to say that the Bible assumes but does not try to prove God's existence.
David says that God has revealed his existence in the world around us. Psalms 19 1-6. Paul
argued that the rain and change of seasons witness to the existence of God. See Acts 14:17;
Romans 1:18-20.

I. HOW GOD HAS REVEALED HIMSELF.

A. Though God makes himself known through nature, it is through his son, Jesus Christ,
that he has revealed himself in greater detail. The miracles of Christ displayed the glory and
power of God. John 2:11. Jesus declared that to see him was the same as seeing the Father.
John 14:9.
B. Another way God reveals himself is through the Bible. From Genesis to Revelation
we read descriptions of who God is and how we may know him.

II. WHAT GOD IS LIKE.

A. God knows everything (omniscient). He knows not only of things that actually
happen but also of things which might happen. Read Psalms 147:4 & Acts 15:18. Before you
were ever born he knew all about you. He knows the ways to be happy, and he has offered to
give you this wisdom. Refer to James 1:5.
B. God is holy. Holiness means an entire absence of sin. It is one of the most important,
if not the most important, attributes of God. I Peter 1:15-16. God's children are told not to sin,
see I John 2:1. We are to "walk in the light as he is in the light." I John 1:7.
C. God is just (righteousness). This means God is no respecter of persons. See
Psalms 19:9. When men stand before God to be judged they will receive full justice. This is a
comfort to those who are Christians that have been wronged in this life; but it is a warning to
those who think they can get away with evil. Read Acts 17:31.
D. God is love according to I John 4:7-8. Never was a more important declaration made
than this. Because God is love, he desires our good, even though circumstances may seem
otherwise at times.
E. God is all powerful (omnipotent). Fifty-six times the Bible declares that God is the
Almighty One. Read Genesis 17:1.
F. God is infinite and eternal. It is not uncommon for a little child to ask, "Where did
God come from?" or "Who made God". The fact is God has always existed. There never was a
time when he was not. Psalms 90:2.

82
Lesson l (cont’d)

G. God is everywhere (omnipresent). No one can escape the presence of God, no matter
where they go in this world or the universe. Psalm 139:7-10.

III. GOD IS A TRINITY.

God has revealed himself as three distinct persons: Father, Son and Holy Ghost. There
are many evidences for this belief in the scriptures.

A. The Father is recognized as God. Read I Peter 1:2).

B. Jesus Christ is recognized as God. John 20:28.

C. The Holy Spirit is recognized as God. Acts 5:3-4.

One verse that states the doctrine of the Trinity is Matthew 28:19 (also 1 John 5:7). The
unity of the Father, Son and Spirit is indicated by the use of the singular "name" rather than
"names." Belief in the Trinity does not mean a belief in three Gods. It means there is only ONE
God and yet three persons in the one Godhead.

CONCLUSION:

On the basis of what we have learned about God, determine that you will do three things:
First, get to know him personally. Second, worship only him, and third please him. See
Hebrews 11:6.

Lesson 2
BASIC CHRISTIAN BELIEFS

CHRIST
Our lesson this week is, "What the Bible teaches about Christ." On one occasion Jesus
asked a very searching question: "What think ye of Christ? Whose son is he?" Read Matthew
22:42. This is the most important question ever to be faced by any individual. Our answer to
this question determines our eternal destiny.
No one ever lived who made the claims Jesus Christ made. His birth, life, teachings,
miracles, death, resurrection and ascension all proved HE was what he claimed to be - THE SON
OF GOD.
I. JESUS CHRIST IS GOD.
The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is God, that he is one of the persons of the Godhead
(Trinity). This teaching is called the DEITY of Jesus Christ. There are many proofs of the deity
of Christ in the scriptures.
A. He is called God. Divine names are given to him, such as "Immanuel." Read
Matthew 1:23. There are definite statements in the scripture that Jesus Christ is God, refer to
John 1:1. This verse shows that Christ is as eternal as the father, has his own personality, and is
God, just as God the Father is God. Also see I John 5:20 and Romans 9:5.
B. He has the attributes of God. The Bible describes Christ as eternal and unchangeable
in Hebrews 13:8. He is also said to be omnipotent. Refer to Matthew 28:18 & Hebrews 1:3.
He is omniscient in John 2:24-25. He is omnipresent in Matthew 28:20. (For the meaning of
these three latter terms see last week's lesson.)
C. He claimed to be God. One cannot believe Jesus is good, and at the same time deny
that he is God. His enemies understood that he was claiming deity and accused him of
blasphemy. See John 10:30-33.
II. JESUS CHRIST BECAME MAN.
The Lord Jesus Christ is one person with two natures. He is the God-Man. This means he
was God and Man at the same time. His birth was very unusual in that he was born of a virgin.
Luke 1:34-35.
A. HIS LIFE. Even though he was the Son of God, Jesus escaped none of the trials of
this life, apart from sin. He experienced the misery of poverty, Matthew 8:20. He was also
misunderstood by relatives and friends. See John 7:5.
His public ministry began at the age of 30 and continued for approximately 3 ½ years.
Most of the time he spent around the Sea of Galilee, although he made several visits to
Jerusalem. His ministry was marked by teachings and great miracles. At last, public opinion
turned against him. One of his own disciples betrayed him; and he was put to death by
crucifixion near the city of Jerusalem.
B. HIS DEATH. Many things can be said about the death of Christ. We could tell of the
awful suffering of one who dies by crucifixion. We could tell of how he was not guilty of the
crimes charged against him. But the important question is: WHY DID HE DIE? The question
is answered by the Apostle Peter in I Peter 2:24. No one else but the Son of God could die for
the sins of the world. John 1:29.
Lesson 2 (cont’d)

C. HIS RESURRECTION. After three days and nights in the grave, Jesus arose from
the dead. The empty tomb and Jesus' later appearances are two evidences of the resurrection.
The resurrection proved the validity of Christ's claims about himself and the truth of all that he
said. See Matthew 28:6 & Acts 2:30-31.

III. THE PRESENT MINISTRY OF CHRIST.

A. He is praying for his people. Study Hebrews 7:25.
B. He is preparing a place for his people John 14 3. He is anticipating the day when he
will take us to be with himself by preparing for our arrival in Heaven.
C. He is engaged in answering our prayers. John 14:14. When we pray in his name and
according to his will, he will answer. I John 5:14.
IV. THE FUTURE MINISTRY OF CHRIST.
The future ministries of our Lord include his coming for his own. See John 14:3.
The pouring out of the wrath of the Lamb on the earth during the tribulation period. Read
Revelation 6:16-17. The return of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords to rule the world with a
rod of iron. Revelation 19:11-16; and his everlasting reign, first over the millennial kingdom of
1,000 years, and then forever.

Lesson 3
BASIC CHRISTIAN BELIEFS

THE HOLY SPIRIT

INTRODUCTION

There are some things which we cannot see but which we most certainly believe. No
one has seen a pain, heard it, or smelled it, but one can feel a pain. The wind cannot be seen, but
we know that it bends the trees and tosses the waves. Electricity cannot be seen, but we know
that it exists, as is evident by its power all about us. No one has ever seen the Holy Spirit, but
the evidences of his presence and power are real to the true believer.
Our study of the Holy Spirit is to make you aware of who he is and what he does. Before
Jesus left his disciples and went back to Heaven, he promised them that the Father would give
them another "Comforter." The word “Comforter” means “one called to the side of another for
help or counsel,” and refers to the Holy Spirit in John 14:16-17. The Holy Spirit does for us
what Jesus did for his disciples when he was here as a human. Read John 16:7.

I. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GOD.

He is linked with the Father and the Son in such passages as the Great commission. See
Matthew 28:19 and II Corin 13:14. In the New Testament, blasphemy of and lying to the
Holy Spirit are the same as if done to God, as in Acts 5:3-4.

II. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A PERSON.

A. Personal pronouns are used in reference to him. Refer to John 16:13-14.
B. His words and deeds prove his personality. Only persons think, speak, and act. The
words and deeds ascribed to the Holy Spirit in the Bible could not have been spoken or
performed by a mere influence.
1. He spoke to men of old as in Hebrews 3:7-8.
2. He wrought miracles in Acts 8:39.
3. He appointed "overseers to feed the Church of God." Study Acts 20:28.
4. He guided the apostles and their fellow laborers in their ministry.
Study Acts 16:6-7.
C. He can be grieved. We could not grieve the Holy Spirit if he were merely a force or
an influence. Every unkind word, every selfish deed, every impure thought grieves the Spirit.
See Ephesians 4:30.

III. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE AUTHOR OF THE SCRIPTURES.

Since the Holy Spirit wrote the Bible through Godly men of old, it is not surprising that it
is such a powerful book. See II Peter 1:21. There could not be a more conclusive declaration
than this verse in proof that the Bible is the Word of God and not the words of men. When I
Peter 1:21 is compared with II Timothy 3:16, we see that the Holy Spirit is none other than God
Himself.
Lesson 3 (cont’d)

IV. THE HOLY SPIRIT CONVICTS THE WORLD OF SIN,

RIGHTEOUSNESS AND OF JUDGEMENT. John 16: 8-ll
Too many people think more highly of themselves than they ought to think, and as long
as they make this mistake, they will not realize their need of a Savior. How thankful we ought
to be that the Holy Spirit convinces us of sin. Otherwise, we are like people dying of a disease of
which they are ignorant; yet if they knew about it, they could find the means to be cured.

V. THE HOLY SPIRIT REGENERATES THE SINNER.

Regeneration is another term for “born again”. It means to re-create. Humans cannot
create themselves or regenerate themselves. Men cannot create a tiny gnat or a grain of sand, nor
can we find such a thing which has created itself. Nothing but the power of the Holy Spirit is
equal to this task. Study John 3:3-5 and Titus 3:5.

VI. THE HOLY SPIRIT INDWELLS THE BELIEVER AND

EMPOWERS HIM FOR SERVICE.
The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is permanent. The filling of the Spirit is the ministry of
the Spirit by which he actually empowers the believer to live a Christian life and at particular
times to accomplish special tasks. See Acts 1:8.
We need to remember that our bodies are sacred because they are a dwelling place of
God. Read I Corinthians 6:19-20. The indwelling Holy Spirit is the believer's comforter,
teacher, and guide. See John 14:26 & 16:13. It is the privilege and obligation of every believer
in Christ not only to have the Holy Spirit dwelling within him, but to be filled with the Spirit,
Ephesians 5:18.

1. What does the word “Comforter” mean?

2. Write the verses that teach that God and the Holy Spirit are the same. Acts 5:3-4.

3. Give three reasons why the Holy Spirit is a person.

a. b. c.

Lesson 4
BASIC CHRISTIAN BELIEFS

THE BIBLE

Of all the books in the world, there is none to compare with the Holy Bible. More
people have died for the teachings of this book than for all other books combined. It is not only
the most loved book in the world, it is the most hated.
It is unique in that it was written over a period of 1,600 years by some 40 different
authors. From kings to humble fishermen its authors are numbered. It is in the Holy Scriptures
that we find the answers to life's most important questions: Where did I come from? Why am I
here? Where am I going?
Various names are used for the Bible, such as "The Holy Bible," "The Scripture,"
and "The Word of God." The word "Bible" comes from a Greek word which means "book."
The Bible is called "Holy" because it comes from God, who is holy. The term "scriptures"
means “writings.” This is the title most often used in the Bible itself. Paul in writing to
Timothy, uses the expression, "the holy scriptures" in II Timothy 3:15.
The Bible is made up of two parts, the Old Testament and the New Testament. The word
"testament" means “covenant” or “agreement”. The Old Testament has 39 books and the New
Testament has 27 books.

I. THE BIBLE IS INSPIRED OF GOD.

A. God spoke it. See II Timothy 3:16-17. David confirmed this same truth in II Samuel
23:2. The prophets said again and again, “Thus saith the Lord”, refer to Ezekiel 5:5. In the
New Testament Paul wrote to The Thessalonians church that "when ye received the word of
God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of
God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe." See I Thessalonians 2:13.
B. God caused men to write down what he had spoken. The Bible originated from God
who caused holy men to write down exactly what he wanted written. See II Peter 1:21. This
doctrine is called "verbal inspiration." In some way, unknown to us, God influenced the
writers of Scripture to record his very words, working through them in such a way that their
personalities were evident. John did not write in the same style as Paul, but what each wrote is
the Word of God.

II. THE BIBLE IS THE REVELATION OF GOD.

The word "revelation" means to make known something that was before unknown or
concealed. Do you have a secret - something no one else knows about but you? When you tell
that secret to someone, you are actually giving them a "revelation." In one sense that is what
God has done for us in giving us the Bible. Read I Corinthians 2:9-10.
There is no other way we can know the full truth about God except through a study of his
word. Even though nature proves the existence of God in Romans 1:20, it does not tell us all
there is to know about him. Only the word of God does that.
Lesson 4 (cont’d)

III. THE BIBLE IS GOD'S MESSAGE TO MAN.

Since the Bible is our guide book, and since our conduct is to be governed by what the
Scriptures teach, let us see what those things are to which we should give attention above
everything else.

A. God's only plan of salvation. The Scriptures teach what God has done and is doing
for the salvation of mankind. Some people are trying to work for their salvation by various ways
and means, but God tells us in his Word of the futility of such actions. See Acts 4:12.
B. Man's need to accept God's salvation. The Scriptures very clearly teach what men
must do in order to be saved. Read Acts 16:29-31 & John 1:11-12.
C. Man's condition in the life to come. The Scriptures teach what the condition of man
will be in the life to come; that is, how man will live and what he will do. Read Revelation
21:3-8. Men today are trying to find out what is going to transpire in the future. The foolishness
and sinfulness of such practices will be seen by looking at Isaiah 8:19 and Luke 16:29-31.

We hold in our hands the most wonderful message of all time and all eternity. It is the
Word of God!

Lesson 5
BASIC CHRISTIAN BELIEFS
CREATION

INTRODUCTION

One of the most important truths taught in the Bible is creation. The devil knows this;
thus from the very beginning he has reserved his most vicious attacks for this great Bible truth.
If he can destroy faith in the Biblical account of creation, the rest is easy. For there is no need of
a Savior if man is not created in the image of God and is a fallen, sinful creature.
It is not our purpose in this lesson to study all the many references in the Bible that have
to do with creation. The Bible clearly teaches that God created all living things on this earth, the
earth itself, as well as all planets and solar systems. Genesis 1 and 2 tell specifically about the
creation of the heaven and the earth. See Genesis 1:1.

I. GOD CREATED MAN IN HIS OWN IMAGE. Genesis 1:26-27.

When God created man in his own image he created a being like himself, except inferior
in intelligence and strength. It is a great honor that of all creatures on this earth, only man is
created in the image of God. All other creatures, except angels, are inferior to man. God
commanded Adam to have “dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and
over every living thing that moveth upon the earth”. Refer to Genesis 1:28. The account of the
creation of man in Genesis 1 is a general statement of the fact of creation. In Genesis 2 is a more
particular account of the method which God used. Read Genesis 2:7.
As a living soul, man has power to think and reason and give expression to his emotion
and will. Adam was an intelligent creature, else he could not have given names to all the animals
which God had created. Refer to Genesis 2:19.
God made man innocent, but he was given a free will and could choose to obey or
disobey God. This is told in Genesis 2:16-17. God also created a “help meet” for Adam in
Genesis 2.23. The two of the them were told to "be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the
earth, and subdue it" in Genesis 1:28. Thus all human beings who ever lived or whoever will
live are related to one another. Read Acts 17:26.

II. GOD'S PURPOSE IN CREATING MAN.

For what purpose did God put man on the earth? Was it so that man might have a good
time in his own way and do as he pleased? Was man made for his own sake or for the sake of
someone else? Is he happiest when he is doing his own thing?
Surely the fact that God made man in his own image and likeness proves he wanted man
to have fellowship with him and worship him. He wanted man to love, serve, and obey him.
Read Revelation 4:11.
Then again while God wants us to please him in all things he tell us that if we seek his
will we are made happy in doing so. Jesus confirmed this same truth in Luke 18:29-30.
Lesson 5 (cont’d)

III. THE FALL OF MAN.

Our first parents disobeyed God's command. God gave them the freedom to choose
between good and evil. They chose evil and so fell from their state of innocence by sinning
against God. Man's fall is described in Genesis 3, and especially in verse 6. Also see Romans
5:12. The great mistake which our first parents made was that they did not believe God; they
failed to trust in his Word.
Though Adam and Eve did not die until many years after eating the forbidden fruit, their
spiritual death took place that very day. We are told in Genesis 3:8 that they tried to hide
themselves from the presence of God. Their bodies began to decay and grow old the very day
they sinned against God.
The Bible tells us about hell, a place where the wicked will go and be punished
everlastingly. This is called in Scripture the “second death”. Read Revelation 20:14-15. But
God does not want men to go there. He did not make them for that. He made them to enjoy him,
not only this world, but also in the world to come.

CONCLUSION:

Just think of it, an eternity of enjoyment is before those who have begun to enjoy God
here. Have you yet begun to enjoy him? Remember, he loves you in spite of your lack of love
for him. He is willing to save you if you will trust his son as your Savior.

Answer the following questions:

1. Give three distinct things about man that make him superior to the rest of creation.
a. b. c.

2. List several reasons that God made man in his image.

3. What was the great mistake of Adam and Eve?

Lesson 6
BASIC CHRISTIAN BELIEFS

SALVATION

INTRODUCTION

No subject should be of greater interest than salvation, or how a person can be right with
God. We saw last week that man was created in the image of God, but he fell into sin. As a
result, every person born into the world from that time to this is born with a sin nature. There are
all kinds of people in the world - rich people, poor people, illiterate people, healthy people,
sick people, black people, white people, but all of them are sinners according to Romans 3:10
and 3:23. All around us are evidences that humans are sinners. Such as a locked car, bank vault,
policeman, etc. See how many things your family can think of that prove man is a sinner.

I. WHAT IS SIN?
Sin is breaking God's law. See I John 3:4. This is what Adam, our first parent, did in the
Garden of Eden. You followed his example when you first did those things that you knew
displeased God. As a sinner, you are separated from God. See Isaiah 59:2. You are dead
spiritually. Read Ephesians 2:1. One day you will have to die because of sin, according to
Romans 5:12. If you suffer physical death while still unsaved, you will experience "the second
death," which means eternal separation from God in the lake of fire. Read Revelation 21:8.

II. GOOD WORKS CANNOT SAVE YOU.

The word of God teaches that no amount of good deeds on your part can save you from
your sins. Read Titus 3:5 and Ephesians 2:8-9. The very best you have to offer is but "filthy
rags" in God's sight according to Isaiah 64:6.

III. GOD LOVES YOU IN SPITE OF YOUR SINS.

Though as a sinner you are an enemy of God, he loves you nevertheless, as he tells us in
Romans 5:8. God's great love for you prompted him to send his son, Jesus Christ, into this
world to die as your substitute on the cross of Calvary. Read I Peter 2:24. Christ took your
sins upon himself and suffered the punishment you deserve.
Lesson 6 (cont’d)

IV. WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO TO BE SAVED.

a. You have to admit you are a sinner. Forget your pride and humbly admit you have
sinned against God. Admit what you are on the inside, not what people think you are.
B. Repent of your sins. Read Mark 1:15. Repentance means more than regret for the
past. It is a change of attitude toward God and yourself. As a sinner you are trying to live
without God, following your own selfish, lustful desires. Repentance means you intend to
put God first in your life and do his will, not your own.
C. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. you must not only turn FROM your sins, you must
turn TO Jesus Christ. Salvation comes when you give evidence of repentance toward God, and
faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. See Acts 20:21. When the Philippians jailor asked the
Apostle Paul, "What must I do to be saved?" Paul answered "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ,
and thou shalt be saved ...." Read Acts 16:30-31. All you have to do then is admit you are a
sinner, repent of your sins, and believe on Christ as your personal Lord and Savior.

V. YOU PERSONALLY MUST CALL UPON THE LORD.

The responsibility rests upon you to call upon God for mercy. No one else can do it for
you. The first prayer for a sinner to pray is given in Luke 18:13. Romans 10:13 says, "For
whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."

CONCLUSION:

God promises to save those who will call upon him. Don't question or doubt his word.
You can always depend upon God to keep his word. Also, God offers you salvation NOW.
Don't put it off until tomorrow or until you are older. Read Hebrews 3:15.

Answer the following questions:

1. Write several things that prove man is a sinner.

2. Define sin.

3. Explain the second death.

Most people are familiar with the word “church”, but not everybody knows where the
church came from and why it is so important to the Christian. When you buy something from
the store, it is often accompanied by a "Manual of Instruction." The Bible is the Christian's
“Manual of Instruction”, and it is God's Word that tells us about the church, the way it is to be
organized, and the reason for its existence.

I. THE MEANING OF THE WORD "CHURCH".

The word "church" as used in the New Testament comes from a Greek word meaning
“a called out assembly”. The term “church” is found more than 100 times in the New
Testament. Except in a few cases where it is used in a general sense as referring to all local
congregations, as in Ephesians 5:25-27, it is used to designate a particular congregation. It does
not require a large number of persons to constitute a church. Read I Corinthians 16:19.
A church then is a congregation of baptized believers, united in the belief of what Christ
has said, and agreeing to do what he has commanded.

II. THE FOUNDER OF THE CHURCH.

A. It was Jesus Christ who instituted the Church. He calls it "my church" in Matthew 16:18.
B. Christ is the head of the church, as told in Colossians 1:18. The head tells the body what
to do, not vice versa.

III. THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP.

A. Salvation. Read Acts 2:47.
B. Baptism. Read Acts 2:41. Baptism is the immersion in water of a believer in Christ.

IV. THE OFFICERS OF THE CHURCH.

By officers we mean those who are to lead the church.
A. Pastors. There are three terms used interchangeably in the New Testament to
denote the person who is to give leadership to the church: "Pastor," "elder," and
"bishop." The most common term is pastor. The qualifications for the pastor are spelled out
in great detail in I Timothy 3:1-7.
It is the responsibility of the pastor to lead his people well and set a Godly example
before them; and it is the duty of his people to obey him and submit to his leadership. Read
Hebrews 13:7 & 13:17.
B. Deacons or servants. While all Christians are to serve, certain ones were officially
recognized in New Testament times as servants of the church, not only ministering to the poor
and needy, but also assisting the pastor in the management of the church's properties and funds.
Read Acts 6:1-7.
Lesson 7 (cont’d)

V. THE ORDINANCES OF THE CHURCH.

An "ordinance" is a law or decree. Although Christ has left many laws for us to
observe, there are two in particular that churches as a body are to observe; Baptism and the
Lord's Supper. Both of these ordinances are symbolical; that is, they do not save, but they
symbolize that which saves us. They both remind us in particular of the Lord's death. Read I
Corinthians 11:26 and Romans 6:3-5.

VI. THE FINANCING OF THE CHURCH.

The church is to be supported by tithes and offerings. Read Malachi 3:8-10 and I
Corinthians 16:1-2.
a. Tithes - Ten percent of one's earnings.
B. Offerings - Anything one gives above the tithe.

VII. THE GOVERNMENT OF THE CHURCH.

Each local church has the right of self-government, free from the interference of
any hierarchy of individuals or organizations.

VIII. THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH.

In Matthew 28:18-20, often referred to as "The Great Commission," Jesus enumerates
the three most important duties of the church:
a. Make individual disciples.
B. Baptize them.
C. Teach and instruct them as Christ has commanded.

CONCLUSION:
If Jesus loved the church enough to die for it, we ought never to take lightly our
responsibility to faithfully attend its meetings and finance its mission.

THE STATE

God has put in the world three institutions which he has ordained for the good of
mankind. The first institution was that of the home. The second institution is that of human
government, and the third is the local church. We will see what the Bible says about human
government, or the state. God established the principle of maintaining law and order in
society by means of the state. Governments are ordained of God. The first record of this,
provision is found in Genesis 9:6. God gave society the right to enforce laws, even to make use
of capital punishment when necessary.

I. GOD ORDAINED OR ESTABLISHED CIVIL GOVERNMENT.

The book of Daniel tells us that God "removeth kings, and sitteth up kings" in Daniel
2:21. This same truth is repeated in Proverbs 8:15-16. The most unjust and wicked rulers in
the world have no power but what is given them from above. See John 19:11 and Romans 13:1-
6.

II. RULERS OR CIVIL MAGISTRATES ARE TO BE HONORED.

The Apostle Peter instructed us to respect those in authority. Read I Peter 2:17. To
“honor the King” means the same as to honor the President, the Governor, the Senator, or the
Mayor. All civil magistrates are to be honored. Jude 8 speaks of those who "despise dominion,
and speak evil of dignities." God requires us to speak evil of no man in Titus 3:2. It is an even
greater sin when we speak evil of magistrates, men whom God has set in authority over us.

III. RULERS ARE TO BE OBEYED.

There are many scriptures that teach us to obey those who rule over us. Read these
scriptures: Matthew 22:21, Titus 3:1, I Peter 2:13-14. These scriptures make it clear that
Christians must submit to those who rule over them, even though such persons might be
wicked. The true Christian is not lawless. However, he does recognize that if human
government makes demands upon him contrary to the will of God, it is better to "obey God
rather than men." See Acts 5:29, also Daniel 3, Matthew 23:10 and Acts 4:18-20.

IV. RULERS ARE TO BE PRAYED FOR.

Christians are to be a praying people. We must pray for ourselves, and we Christians are
to be a praying people. We must pray for ourselves, and we must also pray "for all men," for the
world of mankind in general; however, we are especially commanded to pray for rulers and those
in authority. Refer to I Timothy 2:1-3. When Paul wrote these words, the kings were heathens,
enemies of Christianity, and persecutors of Christians, yet they were told to pray for them. We
need to pray that:
A. They will be just, II Samuel 23:3a.
B. They will rule in the fear of God, II Samuel 23:3b.
C. They will punish evildoers, Romans 13:3a.
D. They will exercise their prerogative to punish serious crimes by capital punishment.
Lesson 8 (cont’d)

V. CHRISTIANS ARE TO BE LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS.

A. We are to seek the good of our country and do nothing, join in nothing, that tends
to disturb the peace.

B. We shall do everything in our power to promote its welfare.

C. We are to pay our taxes. Read Romans 13:7. It might be added that if tax
reforms or other kinds of reforms are necessary for the public welfare, Christians
should exert whatever influence they have to effect those changes.

CONCLUSION:

Christians in America should be especially grateful that they have a country that allows
them the opportunity to worship as they please. It has been well said, "Eternal vigilance is the
price of liberty." Our forefathers fought and died for this liberty. Let us not take it for granted.
If you do not pray for your country, if you do not try to make it a better place, if you do not obey
its laws, you are joining hands with those seeking its overthrow.

THE HOME

INTRODUCTION

The home is the cornerstone of society, and the most vital and most precious unit of
human life. It is ordained of God, and if it falls it will bring destruction upon the race. Events
of recent years have made it clear that the institution of the family is under fire as never
before in our nation's history.
In Matthew 7 Jesus tells the familiar story about two men, both of whom built a house.
One built his house upon the sand and the other built his house upon the rock. When the winds
and the storms came, only the house built upon the rock survived. Christ is stating a truth in the
form of a parable that David emphasized many centuries before. See Psalms 127:1. Just as a
house must have a proper foundation, so a Christian home must be built upon the foundation on
the Word of God.
This week we will be thinking together about the Christian home, and the duty of each
member of the home in cultivating and in maintaining a proper Christian atmosphere.

I. MARRIAGE.
Marriage is the only institution that has come down to us from the other side of the fall of
man. God ordained marriage and it is intended to be a full, rich, joyful life. If it fails in being
this, the fault is not in the institution itself, but in those who enter into it carelessly, and fail to
build on the Word of God.
What is the purpose of marriage? In addition to being the means whereby children are
born into the world and the race perpetuated, God ordained this institution for the happiness and
well-being of mankind. It is not a custom into which men fell in the early days of the race. It is
a part of God's original plan.
There is no relationship on earth so close and sacred as the relationship of marriage. It
supersedes the relationship of a child to mother or father. Our Savior himself directed that a man
should forsake father and mother, and cleave unto his wife in Matthew 19:4-6. This is not to be
taken as meaning that a man should neglect father or mother. It means that the marriage
relationship comes first. After a man and woman have stood at the marriage alter, then from that
moment, his highest duty is to her, and hers to him.

II. THE DUTY OF HUSBANDS TO WIVES.

The Bible says the husband is the head of the wife in Ephesians 5:23. As the head of the
wife, the husband is to take the lead in the spiritual affairs of the home.
There are two attitudes the husband is told to have towards his wife.
A. He is to honor her. Read I Peter 3:7.
B. He is to love her. Ephesians 5:25, 28 and 33. When a husband loves and
honors his wife, the home is secure.
Lesson 9 (cont’d)

III. THE DUTY OF WIVES TO HUSBANDS.

Scripture cautions the woman to build her house. Read Proverbs 14:1. home means so
much more to a woman. It is her career. It is a career even for those women who must have
employment outside the home.
There are two attitudes the wife is told to have toward her husband.
A. She is to submit to him in I Peter 3:1. A husband and wife are equal before
God, but when it comes to the governmental arrangement of the family, the
husband is the head of the home. Read Genesis 3:16.
B. She is to reverence, or honor and respect, him. See Ephesians 5 33. Sarah's
respect for her husband Abraham was such that she called him "lord." Read
I Peter 3:6.

IV. THE DUTY OF PARENTS TO CHILDREN.

Parents have a great responsibility in the training of their children. The Bible admonishes
parents to do the following for their children:
A. Love them. Titus 2:4.
B. Teach them. Deuteronomy 6:6-7.
C. Correct them, see Proverbs 22:15.
D. Provide for them. I Timothy 5:8.
E. Bring them up in the fear of God and in obedience to his laws. Read Proverbs
22:6 and Ephesians 6:4.

V. THE DUTY OF CHILDREN TO PARENTS.

A. Obey them. Ephesians 6:1-3.
B. Honor them. Exodus 20:12.

CONCLUSION:

Is your home a better place because of you? Do you put Christ first in your home? Can
you say with Joshua, “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord”?

BASIC CHRISTIAN BELIEFS
THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST
Part One

The second coming of Christ is the supreme hope of the church. Read Titus 2:13. Jesus
promised he would come back to earth again, and through the centuries believers have
waited expectantly for his return. The Son of God came the first time in Bethlehem almost two
thousand years ago. He was "despised and rejected of men," Read Isaiah 53:3, was arrested,
beaten, ridiculed and finally put to death. After three days and nights, he arose from the grave
and spent 40 more days with his disciples. Then, as he talked with his followers on the Mount of
Olives, he was suddenly taken up to Heaven. We call this the ascension. But some day he will
come again, just as the angels promised on the day of our Lord's ascension.
Christians are to love the appearing of their Lord. See II Timothy 4:8. And why
shouldn't we? We have spoken about him, sung about him, prayed to the Father in his name, and
longed to see him. And suddenly - even perhaps before this lesson is over - he may appear.
What a wonderful hope this is.

I. THE CERTAINTY OF CHRIST'S COMING.

If the second coming were mentioned only once in the Bible, we would accept it as a
glorious fact. But in the New Testament alone Christ's return is mentioned over 300 times.
A. The Testimony of Jesus. Read John 14:3. When Christ ascended he entered
Heaven, where he is now preparing a place for those who trust in him. But he has promised that
when his work of preparation is ended, he will return to receive his own unto himself.
B. The Testimony of the Angels. See Acts 1:11. Angels announced the news of his first
coming in Luke 2:8-14. Now they proclaim the news of his second coming.
C. The Testimony of the Apostle Paul. Read Colossians 3:4.
D. The Testimony of the Apostle John. Read Revelation 22:20.

II. CHRIST'S COMING IN TWO PHASES.

The second coming of Christ is one event, but it is in two stages. The first stage: He
comes for believers. The second stage: He comes with believers.
A. His coming for believers. Christ will return to meet the saints in the air. Read I
Thessalonians 4:16-17. This is known as the "rapture" which means to "snatch away."
Christians will be caught up to meet their Savior. Never forget that this stage of Christ's coming
may take place at any time. When the Lord returns, only believers will go to meet him. Those
who have rejected him will be left on earth to experience the sorrows of the great tribulation.
B. His coming with believers. Our Lord will return to the earth to defeat the Antichrist
and to reign for a thousand years. When he returns he has his children with him. Read the
following scripture: Jude 14 & 15. II Thessalonians 1:7-10, Revelation 19:14, and
Colossians 3:4.
Lesson 10 (cont’d)

CONCLUSION:

Not knowing the time of his coming, we should always be in an attitude of preparedness
for that glorious event. Study Matthew 24:42-44.

BASIC CHRISTIAN BELIEFS
THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST
Part Two

We have already seen that the second coming of Christ is the "blessed hope" of the
Christian. Nothing is more conspicuous in Holy Scripture than the teaching that Christ will
come a second time to the earth. In no uncertain terms Jesus and his disciples declared that he
would return to receive his own unto himself. This week we will study when and how that will
be, and the effect of his coming on the world.

I. THE TIME OF CHRIST'S COMING.

A. No one knows the exact time. No one knows the exact hour of Jesus' return
according to Matthew 24:36 & 42. Occasionally people have ignored our Savior's warning and
have set dates for his return. Informed Christians always keep their affairs in order and eagerly
await his return, but they are careful not to set dates.
B. Signs of the times. While we must not set dates, Christians are not in darkness, that
the day should overtake them as a thief. Read I Thessalonians 5:4. No doubt as the coming of
Christ approaches, God will give his people an awareness of the imminence of that great event.
As we study prophecy and relate that to current events, we cannot but conclude that the Savior's
return may be very near. We see that the nations of western Europe are uniting for economic and
military protection, known as “Common Market”, that Russia and her satellites are
consolidating, that Israel is back in her land and prospering -- all signs of the times. There is
every reason to believe the way is being paved for Christ's second coming.

II. THE MANNER OF HIS COMING.

A. He will return personally. "The Lord HIMSELF shall descend from heaven" in I
Thessalonians 4:16a. “This same Jesus” will return, we are told in Acts 1:11. He will come in
person. Other so-called "messiahs" may come and go; but we look for Jesus himself.
B. He will return with a shout. According to I Thessalonians 4:16b. The Lord's people
will hear his voice as he descends “from heaven WITH A SHOUT”.
C. The Trumpet of God will sound. Read I Thessalonians 4:16c.

III. THE TWO-FOLD EFFECT OF HIS COMING.

When the Lord Jesus returns, his coming will spell comfort for some and tragedy for others.
A. It will mean comfort for God's people. Paul said we are to comfort one another with
the message of the coming of the Lord Jesus in I Thessalonians 4:18. We take comfort from the
fact that "we shall not all sleep" or die, "but we shall all be changed" at the time of Christ's
coming. We will have new, immortal bodies. Read I Corinthians 15:50-55. Sin, sorrow and
death will no longer interrupt our happy existence. We shall be "forever with the Lord." I
Thessalonians 4:17.
Lesson 11 (cont’d)

B. It will mean tragedy for those who know not Christ. When Christ returns to receive
his own, the lost will be left on earth to go through the tribulation, afterwards to be
judged before the Great White Throne. See I Thessalonians 5:1-3 and II Thessalonians 1:7-9.

CONCLUSION:

What will Christ's coming mean to you? Will it mean comfort or tragedy, rejoicing or
remorse? Heaven or Hell? The real issue is this: Have you truly believed God and put your
personal trust in his son as your Savior? Now is the time to do so. Tomorrow may be too late.

Lesson 12
BASIC CHRISTIAN BELIEFS
JUDGMENT
Part One

Is it really true that we will one day have to give an account to God for our conduct in
this life? Not only is it true, it is one of the most prominent doctrines in the Bible. Judges,
courtrooms and judicial proceedings have played a significant role in human affairs since the
dawn of history. But the final judge will be God himself.

I. THE REASON FOR DIVINE JUDGMENT.

Because of who he is, it is impossible for God to ignore or minimize sin. These are the
reasons why.
A. The love of God. Our heavenly Father is tender, compassionate and kind. Read
Ephesians 2:4 & 7. He is "love", in I John 4:8. Were it not for this attribute of God, all mankind
would be lost. But remember that God is more than love. To forget or ignore his other
characteristics is to deny many parts of the Bible.
B. The Justice of God. He is the Judge over all the earth. Genesis 18:25. He is
completely righteous and will not tolerate sin.
C. The Universality of sin. All men are both by nature and in conduct, sinners. See
Romans 3:9-10 & 23. There are no exceptions to the rule. All may therefore expect judgment.

II. THE METHOD OF DIVINE JUDGMENT.

A. The judgment which God metes out will be absolutely fair and just. It is "according
to truth." Read Romans 2:2.
B. His judgment will be universal. Every man will be judged according to Acts 17:31.
C. It will be impartial. Read Romans 2:11. God is no respecter of persons. He cannot
be bribed by money or influenced by a person’s position.
D. It will be discerning. See Romans 2:16. Even the secrets of men, their innermost
thoughts and the deeds they have done secretly or in the dark, must be revealed and judged.
Lesson 12 (cont’d)

III. THE JUDGMENT AT CALVARY.

On the cross the Lord Jesus "bare our sins in his own body on the tree." Read I Peter
2:24. The sins of believers were forever judged at Golgotha.
A. The scope of this judgment. All sins of believers -- past, present and future -- were
borne by Christ. See Acts 13:39. Their sins, past, present and future were on the shoulders of
the eternal Son of God when He died upon cross.
B. It is final. It was once for all. Study Hebrews 10:10, 12 & 14. We must not seek to
add to it or subtract from it. When the Savior cried out upon the cross, "It is finished," he meant
his death met all God's requirements to the fullest. The sin debt had been paid once and for all.
His death need never be repeated.
C. Its effects. It is the basis of our forgiveness, justification, eternal life, and entrance
into heaven. Study Ephesians 1:7, Romans 5:9, and John 5:24.
D. How to take advantage of its benefits. Faith in Jesus Christ as one's Savior is the
golden key. Read Romans 3:24-28. The moment one genuinely, sincerely receives the Son of
God as his Savior, he may know that his sins have been forgiven for Jesus’ sake. He is no longer
under condemnation or judgment. Read Romans 8:1. He is saved and safe forever.

Lesson 13
BASIC CHRISTIAN BELIEFS
JUDGMENT
Part Two

The Bible teaches that all humans will give account of themselves to God. The service of
the saved will be judged at the Judgment Seat of Christ, and the sins of the sinner will be judged
at the Great White Throne Judgment. These two judgments are separated from each other by
approximately 1,000 years.

I. THE JUDGMENT SEAT OF CHRIST.

The believer will not be judged with regard to his sins, as we have already seen.
However, he is chastened in this life for the sins he commits that he may not be condemned with
the world. Read I Corinthians 11:32, 5:5 and Hebrews 12:7.
A. This judgment will take place at the time of the Lord's coming for his saints. Read
Luke 14:14 and II Timothy 4:8.
B. All true believers through the years will appear before this judgment seat. It is only
reasonable that there should be a variety of rewards, considering the different types and length of
service rendered by Christians while on earth. For every child of God there will be "reward" or
"loss." See I Corinthians 3:14-15.
C. Believers will be judged on the basis of works which they have done to the glory of
God. Study Romans 14.10 and II Corinthians 5:10. God's people are not saved by works but by
faith in Christ. But they are saved "unto good works." Read Ephesians 2:10.
D. Only one foundation exists and that is Jesus Christ. Refer to I Corinthians 3:11-15.
Those who build upon him wood, hay or stubble may expect their deeds to be of little value; but
those who build with gold, silver, and precious stones will have a greater reward. The
expectation of rewards should move us to greater zeal in Christian service. Study the following
scripture: Matthew 5:12, 6:1, 10:41-42. Colossians 2:18, 3:24 & Hebrews 11:26.
II. THE GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGMENT.
A. It will occur after Christ's thousand-year reign on earth -- after the loosing and doom
of Satan. Read Revelation 20:1-11.
B. "Death and hell" will give up the dead which are in them in order that they might stand
in judgment before God, as told in Revelation 20:13. This refers to unbelievers. How do we
know this? Because as we have already seen, the sins and works of believers will have been
judged at Calvary and at the judgment seat of Christ. Also, when a believer dies today, his spirit
goes at once to heaven to be with Christ. Read II Corinthians 5:8 and Philippians 1:23. Only the
spirits of departed unbelievers await in hell until the great white throne is set up.
C. All who stand before this throne will be found guilty. There will be no exceptions. All
will be eternally separated from God in the lake of fire. Read Revelation 20:14-15 and 21:8.
Lesson 13 (cont’d)

CONCLUSION:

Most people think that death is the last stage of the great drama of life. Not so! After
death comes the judgment. Read Hebrews 9:27. How do we prepare? By trusting in Christ as
our Lord and Savior and living a life that is pleasing to him.

Answer the following questions:

1. When will the Judgment Seat of Christ take place?

2. Who will appear before the Judgment Seat?

BASIC CHRISTIAN BELIEFS
HELL

The word "hell" is one of the most popular four letter words in the English language.
But the doctrine of hell is one of the most unpopular and despised doctrines in the Word of God.
Almost every false religion of today denies the reality of an eternal hell. Polls have been taken in
major denominations and less than 20% believe in a place of eternal torment. And yet Jesus said
more about hell than any other person in the New Testament. In fact he said much more about
hell than about heaven.
In Luke 16:19-31, Jesus reveals SIX FACTS concerning hell:

I. HELL IS A DEFINITE PLACE.

If the Bible doesn't teach there is a hell, it doesn't teach anything. If there is no hell,
there is no heaven. In Luke 16:23, Jesus said, "And in hell he lift up his eyes being in torments,
and seethe Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom." Hell is not a state of mind, it is a
definite place and is just as real as this building.

II. HELL IS A PLACE OF TORMENT.

Four times in Luke 16, hell is revealed as a place of torment.
A. Jesus speaks of it as a place of torment. Read Luke 16:23.
B. Twice the rich man said it was a place of torment. See Luke 16:24 & 28.
C. Abraham said the same. Read verse 28.
D. In addition, other verses in the Bible imply the same. One is Matthew 22:13.
Revelation 20:10 speaks of "fire and brimstone."

III. HELL IS A PLACE WHERE DEGREES OF PUNISHMENT

SHALL BE METED OUT.
A. Just as there are degrees of reward in heaven, there will be degrees of punishment in
hell.
B. The basis used to determine the degree of punishment is the opportunity a person had
to accept Christ. Read Matthew 11:20-24. Also, works will be a determining factor.
Study Revelation 20:11-15.

IV. HELL IS A PLACE WHERE MEMORIES WILL HAUNT EVERY

INHABITANT. Luke 16:25.

V. HELL IS A PLACE OF CONCERN. Luke 16:27-28.

There are two very practical lessons in this connection.
A. Those who are now in hell are concerned for their loved ones. They do not want
them there.
B. Just as the rich man was interested in his brother, so you and I who are living should
be interested in reaching those who are lost.
Lesson 14 (cont’d)

VI. HELL IS AN EVERLASTING PLACE.

A. Luke 16:26, "A great gulf fixed" - no passing back and forth.
B. Mark 9:44, 46, 48. Three times - "Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not
quenched”.
C. In Matthew 18:8, "everlasting" means the same as John 3:16.
D. Matthew 25:46.
E. II Thessalonians 1:9.

These verses rule out a second chance once a person has gone to hell. You seal your eternal
doom in this life.

CONCLUSION:

There is only one way to hell and that is the way of unbelief. Read John 3:18. The
way to escape from hell is to "believe on the Lord Jesus Christ." See Acts 16:31.

Lesson 15
BASIC CHRISTIAN BELIEFS
HEAVEN

Jesus spoke about two places in the hereafter -- Heaven and Hell. Read Matthew 7:13-
14. Matthew 25:46 also discusses both places.
We have already seen what the Bible says about hell. This week let us see what is says
about Heaven.

I. HEAVEN IS A REAL PLACE.

A. Jesus taught in no uncertain terms that heaven is a literal place. Read John 14:2-3.
a. Christ came from heaven. Study John 6:38.
b. Christ returned to heaven. Study Acts 1:9 & Hebrews 4:14.
c. Some day we are going to be with him in heaven. See John 17:24.
B. Heaven is so real that God gives details concerning its location:
a. It is called "the third heaven" in II Corinthians 12:2-3. The first heaven is the
atmosphere where the birds are. The second heaven is the stratosphere, and
the third heaven is God's holy hemisphere where his throne is located.
b. It is upward. Elijah was caught UP by a whirlwind into heaven. Study II
Kings 2:11. We have already seen that Jesus was caught "up" and taken to heaven
after his resurrection in Acts 1:9. Promotion is blessing, and it comes from the
north -- the location of God's throne. See Psalms 75:6.
c. Astronomers tell us there is only one opening in the universe to get to this third
heaven, and it is in the north, in the constellation of "Swan." Is it not
interesting that Job 26:7 says, "He stretcheth out the north over the empty
place."

II. HEAVEN IS A PLACE OF INDESCRIBABLE BEAUTY.

The Apostle John was given a glimpse of the Holy City. Study Revelation 21:10-
11 & 18-23. This earth is a place of great beauty in spite of the curse, but it is nothing in
comparison to the "new heaven and the new earth."

III. HEAVEN IS A PLACE OF HAPPY ASSOCIATIONS.

A. The redeemed of all the ages will be there according to Revelation 21:24. In heaven
you will get to fellowship with the truly important people of the ages. Imagine seeing Abraham,
Sarah, David, Moses, Peter, John, Mary and Paul face to face. How long will it take to hear
their story? No matter, we have eternity.
B. Your saved loved ones will be there and will be recognized as such. On the Mount of
Transfiguration Moses and Elias were recognized and even had their same names. Read
Matthew 17:1-3.
C. Our Savior will be there. He will be the object of our praise and adoration
throughout eternity.
Lesson 15 (cont’d)

IV. HEAVEN IS A PLACE OF BLESSED EMANCIPATION.

In Revelation 21:4 we are told that four of the most common and dreaded experiences of
the human race will be banished from heaven pain, sorrow, tears and death.

CONCLUSION:

There are many other things that could be said of heaven; but in closing, let us consider
the one and only way to heaven. Jesus stated in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life:
no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." Sin bars a person from heaven. "And there shall in
no wise enter into it anything that defileth ..." Read Revelation 21:27. The good news is that
"Christ died for our sins." Read I Corinthians 15:3. There is no sin too great for God to forgive
through the power of the blood of Jesus. The blood washes, cleanses, redeems, justifies,
sanctifies and inscribes one's name upon the pages of the Book of Life. The sinner's part is to
receive Christ and his sacrifice. Study John 1:12.
