ABSTRACT
This training report is an account of the work experience acquired by me at
Metropolitan Motors Ltd during the SIWES program from August 2014 till
December 2014 for the purpose of obtaining a Bachelor of Science (B Sc.)
degree in Mechanical Engineering.
It gives a brief introduction about the company, its service and maintenance
philosophies as well as its mode of operation. It also gives a good
representation of the organization structure and its areas of specialization in
Mechanical Engineering. Effort was made to explain the role of an
Automobile Engineer in all the departments I was actively involved in as a
trainee.
Adequate and much needed attention has been paid to the core of my

1.0 AIM
The aim of the scheme is to bridge the gap between practical understanding
of industry practices and theoretical knowledge as obtained in the university.
The SIWES program tries to expose students to the practical aspects of their
various disciplines and to enable them get a clearer picture of what is being
taught in school.
The scheme requires that students undergo a period of attachment with an
establishment which renders services relevant to the students course of
study.
The Industrial Training Fund (I.T.F.) is the body that co-ordinates and
oversees the SIWES program. It has various offices all over the country to
monitor the students in their various places of attachment.
Therefore, the aim of this training was to familiarize me with the industry and
its practices. Also, to try and relate the theoretical knowledge obtained (from
my first year through my fourth year) with practical knowledge which gives a
better understanding of certain things taught.

CHAPTER 4
4.0 EXPERIENCE GAINED
During my training program with Metropolitan Motors Ltd., I was educated on
various operations such as servicing and maintenance of various Toyota
vehicles. I was made to understand the inter-relationship between different
disciplines and got familiar with various maintenance techniques. I also
learnt work ethics; how a well-structured organization runs, how to
coordinate and work as a team on projects, how to perform tasks within a
time limit, made new friends and improved a whole lot on my inter and intra
personal relationships. I was really impressed with the level of organization
and professionalism in which employees carried out their duties.
4.1 CONCLUSION
IMPRESSIONS AND OPINIONS ON SIWES
The SIWES is a welcome development as this bridges the gap between
theory and practical. I believe the SIWES is an excellent initiative which
should be kept up as it affords the student the opportunity to have a taste of
what he will face in the real world after obtaining his first degree. It instills
work ethics and discipline in the intern and also builds inter and intra
personal relationships with the outside world. However I believe that the
scheme can be organized better in the sense that the ITF and the institution
of higher learning together with other establishments should provide the
students with industries/organizations prior to their take off as this will help
them to get places relevant to their course of study instead of settling down
for something less because of the unavailability of relevant companies to
their course of study.
4.2 RECOMMENDATIONS
I would recommend that the student should be assisted by the school
organization in placing the students in various companies where they would
receive practical exposure that pertains to their course of study. Also I would
suggest that the government through the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) takes
the SIWES program more seriously. Stipends should be paid as at when due
to enable the students offset some of their transportation expenses.
In conclusion, I attest to the fact that this SIWES program has helped me to
learn skills applicable to engineers and it was indeed a privilege.
