DESIGN OF INDUSTRIAL ENERGY EQUIPMENT 2009/2010

1. General
Welcome to the Advanced course DESIGN of INDUSTRIAL ENERGY
EQUIPMENT. The aim of the course is that students are to attain understanding
about and training in design and selection of thermal and mechanical energy
equipment, in particular such that is used in industry. The level of understanding
should be such that the students in their profession as engineers should be able,
individually and in teams, to select and assess energy equipment, and if necessary,
design such equipment regarding materials selection, construction and important
dimensions and cost-benefit analysis. Equipment encountered in the course is steam
boilers, heat exchangers, turbo compressors, heat pumps and gas turbines with heat
recovery.

2. Content
In the course general design strategy for energy equipment is presented, aiming for
understanding of the trial-and-error concept using heuristics for preliminary design.
The reading course is very much in service of design work, organized as projects in
small groups of students and mostly scheduled in a computer studio. MATLAB
programming and calculations are used but also some hand calculations. Professional
design tools are used or demonstrated. An industrial size Heat pump plant is visited
in the framework of a laboratory exercise. Study visit to boiler manufacturer is
included to reinforce the professional aspect of design work and visualize boiler
components and their production.

3. Prerequisits
Engineering thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, energy technology
(including heat exchanger and turbo machinery basics).

4. Learning outcome
After completion of this course, the student should be able to
• follow general design strategies for industrial energy equipment
• perform necessary calculations required for selection of turbo compressors
from manufacturer catalogues
• perform the necessary calculations to select an appropriate gas turbine for a
CHP application and thermally design the waste heat boiler
• understand and use heat transfer theory for gas radiation, condensation and
boiling
• thermally design an industrial power boiler
• thermally design tube-and-shell and plate heat exchangers, also using
commercial engineering software

6. Examination
• Written Examination (4h). For the grade of Passed, 50% of the total points
must have been obtained. Aids: “Course literature extract” (handed out at
mid-course), Approved calculator-cleared memory, Engineering tables,
English dictionary. (6.0 hec)
• Approved project and laboratory reports. Study visit fulfilled. (1.5 hec)

7. Organisation
The course includes 10 lectures, 6 exercise projects, 1 industrial laboratory session
and 1 study visit.

The project sessions, with near sufficient time scheduled, include introduction by the
supervisor and consultation. The problem text, with usually individual input data,
will be handed out at the start of the session, at the latest. Students are asked to work
together in groups of two. Reports must be submitted electronically by each group
and sent by e-mail to the supervisor in question. The report shall always include a
Word-document. In projects, including MATLAB-programming, the code must be
submitted as well as a Word-document with results and comments. Please respect the
due date.

11. Laboratory exercise schedule

The Laboratory exercise is at the Heat pump plant Ryaverket, owned by Göteborg
Energi AB. The students in each session will be divided into two groups, with 3-4
students each. 4 hours will be scheduled. Report must be submitted by each group.
Transport by mini-bus will be arranged. 5 sessions will be available, Thursday
February 11 and 18 afternoon, Friday February 12 and 19 morning, Tuesday
February 23 morning. Meeting-point is at the entrance of Heat and Power
Technology at 8.00 and 13.15 respectively. Return at Chalmers will be at 12.00 and
17.15 respectively.

The Study visit to Metso Power AB is compulsory, and is scheduled on Monday


February 15 at 13.15:

No 16 from Chalmers main entrance (12.50), via Brunnsparken (12.58), in
direction Eketrägatan,.to Regnbågsgatan (13.07). Assembly outside the reception
at 13.15. Visit will be finished at 16.45. Report will not be submitted.

The regular Examination is scheduled on March 10 at 14.00 in V-building. Re-sit


examination will be in the Easter period and August 25 at 14.00 in V-building.
