Introduction

Smartphones have been around since the year 1993. Since then, it has been changing
not only in the way people communicate but also on how people live their daily lives. They
allow users to access the web and document information easily. Applications on the phone
allow the users to do many things in the palm of their hands. Music, pictures, and files can be
carried in a pocket. Along with communicating through basic phone calls, voice mail, and text
messages, users can send emails directly from their phones. Social networking is made easier
with applications and websites always available. Smartphones act as a camera, notepad,
calendar, alarm clock, and computer. And while it helps make peoples life easier, how does it
affect the other aspects of peoples life most probably students priorities?
The main purpose of this paper is to let students as well as other people be concerned
on how smartphones affect their priorities like studying, helping in household chores and
socializing personally with others. From this research, they will be inculcating in minds that not
all pleasure is good for ones health.
This paper will discuss the background of what we called smartphones, and their
effects, both positive and negative, to users. This paper will also show the possible reasons or
causes of the users addiction and teach them the possible solutions on how to avoid the bad
effects and lessen the chances of getting addicted to smartphones.

Definition of Terms

The following terms presented are defined as they are used in this study
to furnish a common background of understanding among the readers.

Smartphone a mobile phone that is able to perform many of the functions of a computer,
typically having a relatively large screen and an operating system capable of running generalpurpose applications.
Smartphone application A mobile application is a software application designed to run on
smartphones, tablet computers and other mobile devices.
Social networking the use of dedicated websites and applications to communicate with
other users, or to find people with similar interests to one's own.
IBM Simon was a handheld, touchscreen cellular phone and PDA designed and engineered
by International Business Machines Corp. and assembled under contract by Mitsubishi Electric
Corp. BellSouth Cellular Corp.
Palm Pilot a trademark for a handheld digital organizer or personal digital assistant Nokia
a Finnish multinational communications and information technology corporation that is
headquartered in Espoo, Finland
Android a robot with a human appearance

I.

Definition of Smartphone Application

A mobile application is a software application designed to run on smartphones, tablet

computers and other mobile devices. Application in this case refers to a software application
in other words, a software program.1
But an application is not just any old software program its a special type of software
program. An app typically refers to software used on a smartphone or mobile device such as
the Android, iPhone, BlackBerry or iPad, as in mobile app or iphone app. But the phrase
Web app or online app is also used in a business setting as an abbreviation for Web
application or online application meaning software that you access and use while online,
via a browser, instead of software residing on your computer (such as Microsoft Word). 1
We could get more esoteric, as this definition does, preferring to think of an app (at least
in the sense of an app used on a mobile device) as being a shortened or narrow software
application, that perhaps does just one function or that provides a small bit of entertainment.
While that definition holds some appeal when referring to mobile devices, it doesnt really
address the word app when used in the sense of an online software service. 1

History of Smartphones
It's been three years since Apple brought the smartphone to a mass consumer market, but

smartphones have actually been around in one form or another since 1993. The difference
between then and now is that early smartphones were primarily used as enterprise devices
and were prohibitively expensive for most consumers. But with the enormous success of the
iPhone, carriers have discovered that they can lock in customers for long periods of time by
heavily subsidizing their purchases of the latest and hottest smartphones. In this slideshow
we'll track the evolution of the smartphone, from its humble beginnings as a clunky
monochrome device to today's sleek multimedia devices capable of supporting HD video. 2

type of phone that incorporated voice and data services into
one package, as the device acted as a mobile phone, a PDA

a fax machine (remember those?). What's more, the device

even

had a touchscreen that could be used to dial phone numbers,

making

it a true pre-pre-pre-precursor to the iPhone that would come

14

years later. The downside? Well, one Simon owner describes

it

as

"brick-like, huge and heavy." And its original retail price was

(eep!)

$899. If you wanted a smartphone in 1993, you were

probably better off waiting 17 years and paying $200 for an

popularizing the use of mobile data by
enterprise users. After all, what dot-com

that started it all for Palm, the Pilot 1000

offered

users 16MHz of processing power and a

grand

total of 128KB of memory at a retail

of

$300. While this may seem laughably

overpriced for such a primitive device by

today's

standards, at the time the Pilot 1000

was

to

something that looks somewhat like a modern

smartphone. Sure, the Nokia 9110 Communicator
still had a grayscale screen and no real ability to
browse the Web, but it did have a creative flip-out
keyboard design that served as a model for today's
popular slider smartphones such as the Motorola
Droid.2
D. 2002 Blackberry 5810
In the late 1990s, Canadian company Research
in Motion was mostly known for its two-way pagers
that were adopted by tens of millions of users
worldwide. But starting in 2002, RIM entered the
mobile phone market with its BlackBerry 5810
device, a phone with the ability to get e-mail and
surf the Web. The major downside of the 5810 was
that you needed to plug in a headset in order to talk on the phone. RIM would not release a
proper headset-free smartphone until the BlackBerry 6210 came out in early 2004. 2
E. 2003 The Palm Treo 600
The Treo 600 was the first smartphone released by Palm after

it acquired device

manufacturer Handspring, which itself had been started by Palm's

original founders and which had used Palm's operating system as
basis for its Treo devices. This particular smartphone featured both
GSM and CDMA models and had 32MB of RAM and 144MHz of
processing power. The Treo was popular in its own right, although its
release marked the start of the wane of Palm's influence. 2
F. 2007 The Apple IPhone

the

What more can be said of Apple's

revolutionary device? Apple's first attempt
at cracking the smartphone market was a
no-doubter home run that integrated a
touchscreen display with the best Webbrowsing experience to yet be offered on a
mobile device. Three years later, the
iPhone is still the device to which all other
smartphones are compared.2

G. 2007-present Android
Android's rise is fairly remarkable for an operating
system that only just launched in the fall of 2007. The
open-source operating system's success is even more
impressive when you consider that when it debuted it
was already facing a crowded field of OS heavyweights
such as the iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and
Symbian. But now Google's open-source mobile
operating system has become a major player in the
smartphone industry. It was used on more than 7% of all U.S. smartphones at the end of 2009,
more than double its market share from the previous quarter.2
III.

Smartphone applications affecting users

A. As source of education
Students rated the application as a benefit to their studies. They evaluated the

guidelines application positively: as a modern way of familiarising them with the guidelines
and expanding their knowledge, particularly through its use in waiting periods and the
attractive medium smartphone. Smartphones have been the important tools in our society for
the abundant functions as source of education. this new technology offers the potential to
enhance learning and patient care, but also has potential problems associated with its use. It
is important for leadership in medical schools and healthcare organisations to set the agenda

in this rapidly developing area to maximise the benefits of this powerful new technology while
avoiding unintended consequences.3
B. As Entertainment
Smartphones are believed to provide the enjoyment that holds the attention and interest
of an audience, or gives pleasure and delight. Perceived technological barriers negatively
affect behavioural control, reflecting peoples assessment of themselves being capable of
using the services without trouble. Behavioural control is directly linked to perceived
usefulness (except for games) and perceived enjoyment, as hypothesized. Perceived
enjoyment and usefulness were generically found to explain intention to use applications for
both users and for non-users.3
C. As part of social networking
Social networking is the practice of expanding the number of one's business and/or
social contacts by making connections through individuals. While social networking has gone
on almost as long as societies themselves have existed, the unparalleled potential of the
Internet to promote such connections is only now being fully recognized and exploited, through
Web-based groups established for that purpose.3

Reasons of the youths obsession on smartphone applications

A. Entertainment

Twitter

Looking at participation in a variety of smartphone activities by age of owner, the study

finds that rates of texting, picture taking, accessing the web, sending a photo/video, emailing,
and app downloading are all above 50% for smartphone owners of all ages. More significant
age differentials being showing up for activities such as game playing, which 76% of
smartphone owners do, 85% more than the 41% of smartphone owners 50 and older.
In addition, smartphone-based activities such as playing music (83% of 18-to-29-yearolds, 10% more than the 39% of those 50 and up) and accessing a social networking site (76%
of 18-to-29-year-olds, 137% more than 32% of those 50 and up) skew heavily toward younger
owners. The widest age difference occurs in video calling/chatting, with 25% of 18-to-29-yearolds participating, close to triple the 9% of 30-to-49-year-olds and quadruple the 7% of those
50 and up.4
B. Personal Assistant
Your e-mail client, alarm clock, notifier, virtual calendar, task-manager and reminder,
smartphone has replaced all the above and more. Few of these aspects were prevalent in our
run-of-the-mill mobile phones since their inception, but Android and iOS based smartphones
with Siri and Google Now have taken it a step forward by offering more than that. Command
your smartphone to search for a flight from point A to point B on a designated date, and it will
do all the hassle of hunting down the perfect flight details for you without you having to do
nothing. Getting a dinner reservation to knowing the weather forecast to even managing your
schedule around a cricket match, everything is possible. 4
C. Todays Newspaper
It was a daily routine, or rather a ritual to bombard our mind with the recent (or a day
priors) happenings across the world, or simply our country. Reading the newspaper over a cup
of tea was a norm for generations. Albeit, smartphones changed the rules of the game when
the advent of internet connectivity seeped into our lives to deliver world news at our fingertips.
Apps like Google Reader and various others offer fresh news and happenings from the world
over as per your needs, and all that for free! Replacing the hard-copy of a newspaper with that
of an e-paper, smartphones changed the way news was delivered, especially in terms of the
real-time deliverance that followed. 4
D. Global Connectivity

It all started with telegrams and telegraphs which later boiled down to your wired
telephones that transmitted your voice over lands and oceans with a lag of few seconds. It was
expensive, and annoying. The transmission was shoddy at its best, and never gave the
satisfaction of having a hearty conversation, leaving us content by hearing our loved ones
voice. Blackberry were the first ones to change that who introduced BBM, a messaging service
that allowed you to endlessly message a person equipped with a Blackberry mobile anywhere
on the globe without charging a bomb. The next wave of smartphones took it a step further and
offered instant messaging services like WhatsApp, etc. for various smartphones across
different platforms. The advent of 3G data connectivity saw people using the power of Skype to
video chat over the internet. The world had definitely shrunken into a minuscule dot. 4
VI.

Effects of smartphone applications to users

A. Positive Effects
With the emerging features and amazing uses, Smartphones has created a
positive effect in all the aspects of life. It increased productivity, made easier for
entrepreneurs with its multiple support and functions. It improved relation, social lives,
interactions, networks and communications. The ease of interacting with friends and
family members on mobile phone helped in building social relationship with them.
The mobile phone can be used for a variety of things; the technology used in
these devices lets its users to access typical things that were used only on their desktops
or laptops, is now being used on their Smartphone. The following are some positive
impacts of Smartphones.5
1. Increases Productivity
Smartphones such as iPhone, Samsung Galaxy S3, Sony Ericsson Xperia X2
made easy to work from anywhere at any time with the help of its inbuilt features and
application support that aid in accessing multiple office functions such as PowerPoint, email support, Excel, Word, organiser and so on. Smartphones helps learn new things,
use applications that make our life simpler, and even develop our businesses. It helps
people to make it easy for one to work in any place without the need to carry a laptop,
PC or files.6
2. Social Engagement

These days Smartphone serves as the most popular form to maintain

relationship all over the world. The latest technologies that are used in these devices
help in connecting the user to different social networking channels and provide easy
access and simple operation with touch support. Smartphones allow us to communicate
with people easily. 6
3. Personal Development
Smart device allows its users to access the internet and provide useful
information that could be used for personal development such as education,
researches, medical fields, finances and so on. It helps people to befriend with others.
Sending a tweet on Twitter or posting on someone`s wall on Facebook are examples of
how smartphones help staying in touch and communicate with people. 6
4. Gaming
Different studies on the impact of Smartphones revealed that around 64% mobile
phone users use it for gaming, playing music and browsing rather than making calls.
They are also used by many people to make extra cash playing online games or at least
they play games for fun. There are applications that help people to learn. There are
educational games that can educate people. 6
5. Entertainment
As latest mobile devices supports audio, video content, a study says that around
55% people use these devices to browse video or music files and watch them. You can
even make digital purchases of movies, TV shows, music albums or e-Books for real
time entertainment. Smartphones have built in cameras which enables users to take
picture & record videos without the need for digital cameras or camcorders.

6. Maps
Maps for mobile devices offer you to stay connected, get information on local
places, provides easy turn by turn GPS navigation, allow you to discover great offers
and one of the obvious benefits is it helps in locating the destination taking instructions
either in text format or following voice commands. Maps provide information on location
around you in three views: Indoor maps, 3D maps and street maps. 6

In todays world having Smartphone is essential to enjoy the comforts of your life
through your device by operating them with your fingertips. If you dont have enough
money to buy latest Smartphone which help in fulfilling your requirements, try
considering various financing options to buy the phone you desire. 6
B. Negative Effects
Everything in this world has its good and bad side. And that includes using
technology, specifically, smartphones. Smartphones may be able to help us do things in
a much faster way but have you ever think about how badly it will affect us? Have you
ever thought, even just for a second, how getting addicted to such things as
smartphones will make us lose not only our life as a human, but also the goodness and
the beauty of our surroundings?7
Technology is advancing by leaps and bounds, and has given birth to highpowered wireless communication gadgets for the general public. Universally known as
smart phones, these gadgets have positive as well as negative sides to them

[subscript]

So in this part of this research paper, we will discuss to you just some of the
negative effects that Smartphones may inflict on us without our awareness of it. 7
1. Germs
Our world today is more polluted and dirty than what we will ever think in our
whole lives. And seeing the state of our modern world had you ever think about the
possibility that the things that we used are also contaminated by the dirt in our
surroundings? Just think about where you place your smartphones. Your smartphones
have touched many different surfaces, all of which may not be clean. Obviously our
hands are the number one things that touch our phones, and then we put the phones to
our face. This easily spreads germs, contaminating us without even being aware of it.
Luckily, this is one of the negative effects of your smart phone on your health that
you can make better. Try to wipe down your phone regularly with sanitizing wipes to cut
back on the germs.7
2. Creativity

It might not be that obvious to our naked eyes but smartphones can dampen our
creativity. By checking status updates on our facebook accounts every now and then,
and wasting our time surfing the net, we failed in letting our mind wander around which
is an important component to enhance our creativity. We often use most of our time
using our smartphones that we fail to let our mind do some imagining and beautifying of
stuffs around us, like wondering why the sky is blue or why the grasses are green. And
that kind of activity that is slowly becoming a habit to some teenagers our age is what
stops our creative thoughts to flourish.7
3. Disconnect
Have you ever thought of talking and having a quality time with your family
instead of checking your emails and stalking your crushes online? Some may do so, but
others may not. And by choosing to use smartphones while we leave our relationships
with people rot, we slowly disconnect ourselves to the real world and the people that we
deemed important to us because during the time that we mightve been reading a text
message, an important person for us is celebrating his/her special day alone. We
mightve been busy stalking our favourite artist, while our family is already facing a crisis
that needs the whole familys presence in order for it to be solved. And when we finally
realized these things, its already too late for us to get back at it. Because instead of
savouring our golden time with our family and important love ones, we choose to waste
it on lifeless technology contraption like our smartphones. 7

4. Texting and driving

We all know that texting while driving is a horrible idea, yet, so many of us still do
it. Taking your eyes off the road even for a second to read a text or respond can easily
cost you your life or the life of someone else. Dont let your smart phone be a distraction
to you while driving; its not worth it. 7
5. Stress

While many of us love being able to stay connected through email, text, and calls
with our smart phones, its that same constant availability that can lead to major stress.
This kind of negative effect most of time takes toll on students who dont know how to
manage their time properly because during the time that they should have been
reviewing for their tests tomorrow, they end up checking their email all through the night
leaving no time for study. And by tomorrow and during the test, they end up getting
anxious of whether theyll be able to perfect it or even get a point altogether. No one
needs this sort of stress that is made possible by smartphones especially to students
like us.7
6. Productivity
This negative effect is what is mostly visible to students of our times. We mightve
had a goal of surfing the net for our assignments but instead of doing so, we end up
wasting our time checking the new status updates on our facebook home; thus resulting
for us to copy our homeworks from our classmates 15 minutes before the class starts.
Boredom supposedly isnt also to be blame for this kind of development of the kids in
our generation because boredom was the spark of previous generations ingenuity and
productivity

[subscript]

. We might be able to instead do use our boredom to do something

productive, but seeing how our modern students are today, it might be deemed
impossible as long as they have their smartphones on their hands. 7
7. Sleep Problems
Smart phone are also linked to many sleep problems. If you take your phone to
bed you may find yourself plugged in while you should be winding down. Instead of
relaxing your brain, you are feeding it with more thoughts. Its hard to fall asleep when
your brain is buzzing with new information. Smartphones may also cause insomnia that
also end up producing sleepless nights for us students who needs all the sleep they can
get to be able to face our classes in school the following day.7
So to avoid sleep problems, turn your phone off at bedtime instead of making it
your nightly companion.7

The smartphone, used without caution and self-awareness, can be the center of a
circle of self-damage, wastefulness, and depersonalization for its owner just as easily as
it can be a gateway to easier living and enlightenment. 7
Without a doubt, the thing we called smartphone has great power altogether. But
along this great power, comes great responsibility; for if we dont take our time being
responsibility, we might endanger our lives in the hands of these lifeless contraptions that
are made by humans, themselves.7

VII.

Possible Solutions
The Four Steps Armed with this knowledge, you can use the Four Steps every day

whenever the urge to check your smartphone arises.

A. Relabel
Relabel to increase your awareness of what's going on. Say to yourself, "I am
having the urge to check email again." Simply say what's happening as it happens. 8
B. Reframe
Reframe to explain to yourself why this keeps happening and remind yourself
that you don't have to respond to these deceptive brain messages. Tell yourself that you
have the urge to check your email again because it gives you a rush and decreases
your anxiety that you might be missing something. It is nothing more than a deceptive
brain message. Remember: You are not your brain and you do not have to respond to
every impulse your brain generates.8
C. Refocus
Refocus to place your attention on something that matters to you and is
important at that time. It might be paying attention to the people in your meeting,
finishing the document you started, or realizing that you're stressed, stepping back and
asking yourself: Is what I am about to do aligned with what I want to accomplish in the
big picture? Whatever it is, the goal is to let the urge to check your phone or email be
there, but not give it credence or give in to it. Employ our 15 minute rule - make yourself
wait at least 15 minutes before checking your smartphone again with time and a lot of
practice.8

1. Setting the right priorities

Our world today is more polluted and dirty than what we will ever think in our
whole lives. And seeing the state of our modern world had you ever think about the
possibility that the things that we used are also contaminated by the dirt in our
surroundings? Just think about where you place your smartphones. 10
The best method for setting priorities on your list, once you have determined your
major goals or objectives, is the A-B-C-D-E method. You place one of those letters in
the margin before each of the tasks on your list before you begin.A stands for very
important; something you must do. There can be serious negative consequences if yo
dont do it.9

a. B stands for important; something you should do. This is not as important as
your A tasks. There are only minor negative consequences if it is not completed.
b. C stands for things that are nice to do; but which are not as important as A or
B, tasks. There are no negative consequences for not completing it.
c. D stands for delegate. You can assign this task to someone else who can do
the job instead of you.
d. E stands for eliminate, whenever possible. You should eliminate every single
activity you possibly can, to free up your time.

When you use the A-B-C-D-E method, you can very easily sort out what is
important and unimportant. This then will focus your time and attention on those items
on your list that are most essential for you to do.9

2. Managing time wisely

a. Limit distractions. Block out time on your calendar for big projects. During that
time, close your door and turn off your phone, pager and email.
b. Delegate. Take a look at your to-do list and consider what you can pass on to
someone else.
c. Say no to nonessential tasks. Consider your goals and schedule before agreeing
to take on additional work.
D. Revalue
Revalue naturally falls into place. As the urge to check your smartphone
surfaces, immediately recognize this as nothing more than the feeling of a deceptive
brain message and move on with your day, checking your phone about once an hour.9
Consistently use the Four Steps for a few weeks and you'll see your smartphone
obsession abate and those strong urges to constantly check it disappear. The key to
success is practice. Keep using the Four Steps over and over whenever the thoughts,
urges or impulses arise. Become more aware of what's happening, learn to Refocus your
attention in healthier and productive ways whenever the urge to check your phone
emerges, and you'll teach your brain new responses that are beneficial to you. You'll be
in control and can place your attention where you want it to go, not where your
smartphone beckons you to follow.9

Summary of the Study

The Smartphone is a tremendous technology that has transformed our world in a variety
of different ways. In has exploded onto the mainstream market and has become a part of
popular culture. It has revolutionized the motions of communication between people and
allowed instant access to information in the palm of our hands. To think that one small device

holds someones entire world says a lot about the importance of a Smartphone. It is something
that the average person does not leave his or her home without. A Smartphones capabilities
allow it to be such an essential part of our lives.

The future looks very promising for the Smartphone. In just a few years, Smartphones
have become very popular, and it is almost unheard of for someone to not own one. As major
developers create new ways in which we can use our Smartphone, the opportunities our
endless. I certainly believe the Smartphone will become more human, as we can already see
a preview of that in Apple iPhones Siri.

Smartphones have been part of our lives now. Observe the people at coffee shops
before they used to chat with their friends. But now they are all facing their phones and
checkjing their newsfeed. Even in a students life, smartphones play a big role. Before, they
used to go to libraries to search for their assignments. But now it is just a click or a touch away.
Smartphones can easily access the Worldwide Web. You can do that wherever you want as
long as there is an internet connection. Smartphones have been helpful to us people especially
to students. But if there are benefits there are also disadvantages like accessing Social
Network in your phone. It can make someone lose focus. And it will affect them when it comes
to prioritizing things.

I guess if you are addicted to your smartphone, you can get rid of it by having discipline
because the change will come from you. There are many opportunities available for the future
of a Smartphone is endless. It will only take time to see which of these innovations will be a
part of our everyday lives.

Recommendation and Suggestion

Think twice before you click.

Due to the continuous growth and usage of smartphone applications that affect the
students daily lives inside and outside the school, we the researchers recommend and suggest
that in buying smartphone there should be an age limit. Students at the age 16 years and
above are the appropriate ones to own a smartphone because we do believe they are
responsible enough to use certain smartphone applications. Parents must also guide their
children especially lots of applications are created already whether beneficial or unprofitable.
We, students, must be careful in using the smartphone. We ought not to rely too much in using
the technology because it may change and affect us thoroughly or gradually.
