LESSON PLAN IN GRADE 9 SCIENCE

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the session, the Grade 9 students will be able to;
1. Identify the kinds of magma
2. Deduce the effect of temperature to the pressure inside a volcano
3. Describe the importance of viscosity to the formation of magma
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. Topic
: Kinds of magma
B. References : K to 12 Science Curriculum Guide
Science Grade 9 students textbook, module 3, pp. 10-14
Science Grade 9 Teacher Guide, module 3, pp. 7
C. Materials

: Activity Sheets, paper

III. Procedure:
A. ENGAGE
Defining viscosity
The students will compare the behavior of a syrup and water.
What are their differences in terms of their flow ability?
B. EXPLORE
The Students will be grouped into Five. Each group will perform the
following activity:

UNDER PRESSURE
I. Objectives
Describe the effect of high temperature to the formation of gas
II. Materials:

Two 300 ml bottled soft drinks (must be sealed before using)

Two 300 ml bottled cooking oil

two identical small basins

hot water
Procedure:
1) Half-full basin A with hot water and basin B with cold water
2) Put one bottled soda in Basin A and another one in basin B. Wait for
three minutes.
3) Slowly unscrew the caps from the bottle in each basin and observe
Q1: What did you observe in each bottle?
Q2: Explain your observation
Q3: What is the role of hot water in the set up?

What if we use another liquid such as oil instead of soft drinks? Will we have
the same observation? Lets find out in the next procedure.
4. Replace the hot water in basin A
5. Put one of the bottled cooking oil in hot water and the other one in cold
water. Wait for three minutes.
6. Slowly unscrew the caps and observe.
Q4: Do you have the same observation as in the soda drinks?
Q5: Explain your answer

C. EXPLAIN
Discussion/Analysis
The students will explain the output of their activity based on the
following guide questions:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

What happened to the content of soda in hot water?

What would be explanation for the bursting of soda?
Why is that the oil in hot water had risen?
What could be difference of the effect of the cold and hot water?
Is the temperature had an effect on the pressure inside the bottle?
What could be your conclusion unto the activity?

D. ELABORATE
From the students outputs, the teacher will discuss the effect of
temperature to the pressure of a substance. Also the teacher will
relate this to the concept of volcano which this would explain the
eruptions of volcano. Also the teacher will discuss the behavior of
the different kinds of magma according to its component. And also
the reason/component for its viscosity is being discussed.
E. EXTENSION
Using the concept that was presented, the students will now identify
the kinds of magma as to its behavior basing on the following
situations
1. A volcano in Italy erupted and the movement of its lava is in fluid
like.
2. Magma that was released by Mt. Vesuvius formed a dome on its
vent.
3. Mt. Leonard Khinaseff has a magma on its vent that formed a plug.
IV. ASSESSMENT
Explain the following in your own words:
1. Temperature affects pressure.
2. The viscosity of a magma affects the kind of eruption.
V. Assignment:

Research on the kinds of cones of a volcano and then give their descriptions and
reasons for their formation.
