through diffusion and filtration, secretes
lubricates.
Location: Kidney glomeruli, air sacs of
lungs: lining of heart, blood vessels,
lymphatic vessels.

Simple Cuboidal
Function: Secretion and absorption.
Location: Kidney tubules, ducts and
secretory portion of small glands,
ovary surfaces.

Simple Columnar

Pseudostratified Columnar

Function: Absorption, secretion of mucus

enzymes.

Function: Secretion of mucus, propulsion

of mucus by ciliary action

Location: Lines digestive tract,

gallbladder, excretory ducts in some
glands, ciliated lines small bronchi, urine
tubes, uterus.

Location: Nonciliated type in sperm ducts

and large glands, ciliated lines trachea
and upper respiratory tract.

Stratified Squamous

Transitional

Function: Protects underlying tissues in

abrasion areas
Location: Nonkeratinized forms the moist
lining of esophagus, mouth, vagina;
Keratinized forms epidermis of skin.

Bone
Function: Supports and protects,
stores calcium and other minerals
and fat, hematopoiesis
Location: bones

Elastic Cartilage
Function: Maintains the shape of
structure with flexibility.
Location: Supports external ear,
epiglottis.

Function: Stretches readily and

permits distension of urinary organ
by contained urine
Location: Lines ureters, bladder, and
urethra

Hyaline Cartilage
Function: Supports and reinforces,
cushiony
Location: Embryonic skeleton, ends
of long bones in joint cavities, ribs,
nose, trachea, and larynx.

Areolar
Function: Wraps and cushions organs,
helps with inflation, holds and conveys
tissue fluid.
Location: Under epithelia of body, forms
lamina propria of mucous membranes,
packages organs, surrounds capillaries.

Adipose
Function: Provides reserve food fuel,
insulates for heat loss, supports and
protects organs.

Blood
Function: Transport of respiratory
gases, nutrients, waste, etc.
Location: blood vessels

Location: Under skin in hypodermis,

around kidneys and eyeballs,
abdomen, breasts.
Reticular
Function: Fibers form a soft internal
skeleton that supports other cell
types.
Location: lymph nodes, bone marrow,
spleen

Skeletal

Dense Fibrous
Function: Attaches muscles and bones
together, stretch and withstand stress
Location: Regular in Tendons, ligaments;
irregular in fibrous capsules, dermis, and
submucosa; elastic in large arteries,
ligaments and bronchial tubes.

Cardiac

Function: Voluntary movement and

control, locomotion

Function: Propels blood into

circulation, involuntary control.

Location: Attached to bones or skin

Location: Walls of heart

Smooth

Nervous

Function: Propels substances or

objects along internal passageways,
involuntary control.

Function: Transmit electrical signals

from receptors and to effectors to
control activity.

Location: Walls of hollow organs
