most people are looking for
ways to make a little extra
money. There are several
ways to do this, but one way
can net you some money and
de-clutter your house all at
the same time is to have a
garage sale. You won’t be
able to pay off your credit
card debt with the proceeds,
but it may give you a little
extra cash in your pocket.
Keeping your financial
head above water in these
tough economic times can
be a challenge. Making ends
meet is tough enough, but
when you throw in job loss,
illness, divorce or any
number of other life-altering
events, sometimes the only
way out is bankruptcy.
Each year, millions of
people file for bankruptcy,
usually as a last resort to
their financial problems.
According to one study, the
average age of someone
declaring bankruptcy is 38-
44% file as couples, the rest
as singles, 30% women and

sunscreen only when it's sunny or
warm outside. Dermatologists
recommend applying a sunscreen
with an SPF of at least 30 every

Gee Whiz, I Know All These Guys
I've been around ("round, round,
get around, I get around").
Officially.
On a recent Saturday night, the
National Motorsports Press
Association inducted four into its
Hall of Fame, and I know every
one of them. In the past, there were
Smethport Hubbers vs. Port Allegany Gators
always the homages to antiquity,
the long-overdue elections of here-
tofore overlooked icons. Now that
Roger Penske, Jack Roush, Rusty
Wallace and Robert Yates have
joined the NMPA Hall, I guess it
gives me some standing in the
antiquity category, too.
I don't have much in the way of

outlandish anecdotes to pass along
in regard to Penske. Alone of the
four, my interaction with Roger has
always been somewhat formal. I
like him. I admire him. But that's
no fun.
Roush? When his name comes
up, I often think of the Busch
brothers, both of whom began
racing within his vast domain and
both of whom were "vocabulari-
cally affected" by the verbose Mr.
Roush, who has seldom seen a
word of more than three syllables
that he didn't adopt. The Busch
brothers, particularly when they
were younger, were so impressed
by Roush's "big words" that they
tried to emulate him, or that's
always been my theory.
The difference, of course, is that
Jack tends to know what those
words mean, and neither Kurt nor
Kyle generally does. Kurt's lingui-
stic offenses would rank him some-
where close to Norm Crosby or Bo
Dietl, as he has been known to
"circumference the track" and be
proud of "how we've been able to
solidify the solidity of our team."
Kyle? Less so, but he has also
contributed to mild unrest in the
tomb of Noah Webster.
Rusty Wallace? The Emperor of
Exaggeration. He's always been a
walking, talking racing story in
need of fact checking. Rusty
doesn't intentionally stretch the
truth; he just thinks optimistically.
The press conference had barely
started when Rusty matter-of-factly
said he had been in Canada four
hours earlier. Pretty fast plane.
Possible -- but when one factors in
all the time needed before and after
one actually climbs into the plane,
even a private plane -- unlikely. By
the way, I'm fairly sure someone
could've made a killing in Vegas
betting on Rusty giving the
evening's shortest speech. That was
a bigger upset than Appalachian
State over Michigan.
The longest speech was Jeff
Hammond's name-dropping intro-
duction of Roush, for whom he
once worked for, oh, 10 minutes or
so. I have no idea how that idea
transpired.
Penske was all grace and
humility. Roush and Yates rambled.
Rusty was probably the MVP of
the evening.
Yates requires special attention.
Through 2007, when he turned
over his race team to son Doug,
Yates always seemed to be in sync
with signals from outer space.
Robert is obviously immensely
intelligent, so much so that oft
times guys like me just have no
idea what he is talking about.
Below are a couple "Yatesisms"
from 2005.

with that, and certainly it's turned

He also said of rival car owner

quickest, they can all jump on

Yates has never been as
uproariously nutty as Kurt Busch
("We have heavy hearts in the
backs of our minds."). He
specializes in sentences that are, to
the non-brilliant-mad-scientist set,
indecipherable.
Which, of course, is why I always
enjoyed listening to him over the
years. I'm in it for the humor most
of the time.

Q: My roommate and I put those
screw-in cup hooks underneath one of
our kitchen cabinets, and the first time
we hung coffee mugs from them, the
hooks pulled right out of the wood and
the cups all smashed. How do you set
hooks so they don't fall out. Also, how
can we fix the damage to the cabinet
bottom before the landlord sees it? -- Katie J., via email
A: From your description, the cabinet bottom is most likely a
lightweight wood, maybe particle board, and perhaps a bit old and
slightly deteriorated. Cup-hook screws are similar to wood screws, with
sharp points and slightly wider screws in order to "bite" securely into the
wood. However, between the particle board and heavy mugs, the screws
just didn't have enough to hold onto.
Try two things next time: larger hooks and a solid piece of wood.
Most cabinets have a brace along the bottom made of solid wood. Pre-
drill a hole that is smaller in diameter than the diameter of the hook
screw, then screw the hook into place.
Another method, if your cups must absolutely hang in a certain
place and direction, is to add support to the particle board. Again, do this
by selecting larger hooks with longer screws. Purchase a strip of solid
wood at least one-half inch thick and about 2 inches longer than the
planned line of cup hooks. Put this strip inside the cabinet on the "top
side" of the base. Measure the distance from the middle of the wood
strip to the outside edge of the cabinet. Mark this same distance on the
underside of the cabinet (this will help you locate the screws correctly).
Mark the spot where you want each hook. Last, tack down the wood
strip with a dot of wood or white glue on either end, just so it doesn't
slide around.
Have a partner hold the wood strip in place as you pre-drill the
screw holes, going through the cabinet base and into the strip in one
straight shot. Continue to support the wood strip as
you screw the hooks through the base and into the wood strip.
This support strip will allow you to hang most coffee mugs or
other lightweight items. I don't recommend hanging heavy items like
pots and pans from the hooks, as the added weight could bring the
cabinet base down.
HOME TIP: Add another item to your toolkit: earplugs.

These boxes aren't just sent at random. The names come from
those in charge, the ones out in the field who compile lists of members
of their group who are to receive the packages. But if you have a family
member who is overseas (and who is coming back after Feb. 1, 2010),

Covers Lots of Territory
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Can you
give me a good definition of "heart
disease"? I find the phrase very
confusing. -- A.T.
ANSWER: It's confusing because it
covers so much territory and deals with
so many different conditions. The most
prevalent form of heart disease is
coronary (heart) artery disease -- CAD,
a buildup of cholesterol, fat and other materials in the arteries that
supply the heart with blood. The buildup obstructs blood flow to the
heart muscle, and the result is angina (chest pain) with partial
obstruction, or a heart attack with complete obstruction.
Heart-valve disease constitutes another group of heart
ailments. The heart has four valves that keep blood moving from one
heart chamber to the next and prevent backflow of blood into the
chamber it just left. A valve can narrow and present an obstacle to the
free flow of blood, or it can leak and allow backflow of blood. For
example, a narrowed mitral heart valve is mitral stenosis; a leaky
mitral heart valve is mitral regurgitation.
The heart is a muscle. Diseases that directly affect the heart
muscle are cardiomyopathies ("cardio" is heart; "myo," muscle;
"pathy," disease). Some are inherited. Others develop on their own.
This is another large group of heart diseases.
Congestive heart failure arises when the heart becomes such a weak
pump that blood backs up into the lungs, causing shortness of breath,
and into the rest of the body, causing ankle and feet swelling.
Congestive heart failure may result from any of the above three heart
conditions.
Heartbeat disturbances -- arrhythmias (uh-RITH-me-uhs) -- come
about from a misfiring of the inborn electrical activity of the heart.
Atrial fibrillation is a common arrhythmia. Arrhythmias often disturb
heart pumping and lead to heart malfunction.
Congenital heart disease is another group of heart diseases.
They are defects in the way the heart formed during embryonic and
fetal development. Holes in the partitions that separate the heart
chambers are examples of congenital heart disease.
Congestive heart failure, a common consequence of heart disease, is
discussed at length in the pamphlet on that topic. Readers can order a

year-old boyfriend. He has type 2 diabetes. He eats sugar without
control -- cakes, ice cream, regular soda pop. Most of the time, his
sugar is over 300, sometimes over 480. He takes medicine for his
diabetes, so he thinks he can eat whatever he wants. What can
happen? -- G.A.
ANSWER: You have justification to be worried. So does
your boyfriend. Uncontrolled diabetes leads to artery hardening,
strokes, heart attacks, nerve damage, kidney failure and blindness.
Medicine is only a part of the treatment. Diet is the other part. He
must limit his total daily carbohydrates, not just sugar. Carbohydrates
are starches and sugars. The only way he'll come to grips with this is
to talk to a dietitian or a certified diabetes counselor. He should do so
quickly.

change soon. It would be nice to see some red and blue and even green
for a change!
