Flexible learning
and professional
qualifications
Study is more than just a classroom. A flexible approach
means an education tailored just for you.
You choose a university course because it helps you secure the job that
you want, but the modern world changes quickly and you need to be
able to tailor your education to match it. As a Deakin student, you can
choose to study on-campus, full or part-time or even fast-track your
studies by studying over summer. You can alter your study program with
different electives, and in some cases have your prior studies recognised
for academic credit.
By having industry representatives on our course advisory boards, Deakin
courses continue to keep pace with real-world practice, giving Deakin
graduates an edge over their competitors. We want to help you get into
the industry straight after graduation and were committed to finding the
most flexible way to do that while delivering a quality education.

Campus learning
Classes allow campus learning students to focus on a large amount
of information in a formal teaching environment, while seminars give
students access to smaller group discussions and a tutor who can help
out on a more personal level. Assessment may take a variety of forms,
including written work and tests undertaken in class, participation
laboratory sessions and final examinations each trimester.

Large university, close community: vibrant and friendly

Deakin is one of Australias largest universities, with more than 36 000
students. The campuses have a strong community feel and provide a
supportive and friendly place to study, with clubs and societies so you
can connect with other students. We continue celebrating international
diversity here in Australia through on-campus events and an international
student community online.

Cloud (online)
Cloud students undertake the same courses as campus learning
students but because it's online, the program and assessment is tailored
accordingly. Because Cloud (online) students dont follow the exact same
class/seminar program as campus learning students, Deakin has a team
of specialist staff appointed to help students develop successful study
skills and online techniques, in addition to Career Advisers and Language
and Learning Advisers.

SIYU XIE
DUELI and bachelor of nursing student
Country of origin: china
Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus
After two years of studying in Beijing, Siyu moved to Australia to
complete her bachelor's degree. However, she needed to improve
her English language skills first, which is where DUELI came in.
I started my Australian journey at DUELI in Geelong and it was
sensational. Not only did I improve my English skills, I made
lifetime friends and became part of the wonderful Australian
culture, she says.
DUELI offered direct access to Siyu's chosen course at Deakin,
something that appealed to both Siyu and her father. DUELI
stood out because of its pathway program. Also, knowing English
is a big career advantage in China. Another bonus is that some of
Siyus former classmates had also chosen DUELI.
Siyu has now completed her Bachelor of Nursing at Deakin and
is a Registered Nurse in Australia, where she is required to use
English every day.
My writing and speaking skills have greatly improved thanks to
presentations, debates and written assignments I even learned
some funny Australian slang!

Geelong Waterfront Campus

Siyu enjoyed meeting people from all over the world at DUELI and
is planning to meet up with some friends in their home countries.
I now have friends from Vietnam, India, Fiji, Germany, and South
Korea everywhere!' she says.

make Deakin University an interesting place to study.
Deakin research students have opportunities to work with national and
international partner collaborators.
At Deakin we take pride in being relevant to students, not just in the
courses we teach, but also in the research we do. Whether you want
to study engineering, law, politics, education, psychology, medicine,
health or another discipline, studying at a university that is committed to
research means that you have the opportunity to learn from people who
are making a real difference in the world.
Deakin University is a research-driven institution, which means that
you can graduate with the latest knowledge in your chosen field as your
supervisors are highly regarded both in academia and in the industry.
Deakin is very serious about providing excellent support and experiences
for our research students, most of whom have opportunities to work with
partner collaborators nationally and internationally, speak at international
conferences and use world-class facilities within Australia and abroad.

You can pursue postgraduate research studies in three different ways:

Masters by Research, which is awarded for an original contribution to
knowledge achieved in up to two years of full-time candidature
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), which is awarded for a substantial original
contribution to knowledge achieved in two to four years of
full-time candidature
Doctor of Psychology (DPsych), a professional doctorate program
which combines a research project, coursework and structured
research tasks that specifically relate to professional practice.
Another pathway into research includes completing an Honours year,
which is a specialised year of full-time study (or part-time equivalent)
allowing students to draw together the theory and practical skills gained
in previous undergraduate studies. Honours provides students with
the opportunity to refine analytical and research skills while expanding
employment and study options.

Arizz Azhar
Bachelor of Design (Architecture)
Country of origin: Malaysia
Geelong Waterfront Campus
Passionate about Architecture, Deakin's Bachelor of Design
(Architecture) was an easy choice for Arizz. 'I had heard
good things about Architecture at Deakin from the Board of
Architects in Malaysia and after having a look at the course
structure, I found I was attracted by the mix of design subjects
with real world applications.'
Arizz says the mix of practical industry skills, theory and
design meant Deakin offered a perfect balance. 'Deakin has
a good relationship with its successful alumni community in
the professional world and this is a big advantage. I felt that
joining the Deakin community would open up many pathways
and employment opportunities for me, and so far it has done
nothing less.'
Arizz participated in Deakins Intercultural Dialogue through Design
(iDiDe) program, partaking in the iDiDe India Study Tour in 2013.
'The highlight of the trip for me was the collaborative engagement
with The Sushant School of Art & Architecture (SSAA) housed at
Ansal University in Gurgaon, India. The workshop assembled a
range of experiences and resulted in a high profile exhibition at
The Australian High Commission in India.
Now confident of his abilities in Architecture, Arizz is keen to get
into the workforce. 'For now, I can see the working world in my
view and I am eager to walk into it with assurance,' he says.

Study in first-class, architecturally-designed facilities at the Geelong

Waterfront Campus, including an expansive modern design studio, fully
equipped workshop, photographic studio and computer laboratories.

Media and Communication

Languages

Media and Communication is the world's fastest growing industry and is

an area of rapid and continuous technological, political, economic and
social change. Much of the recent increase in human knowledge is linked
with developments in media and communication. We have study options
in a diverse range of disciplines related to Media and Communication,
including animation, film studies, journalism, media and communication,
photography, professional and creative writing and publicrelations.

Acquire not only linguistic skills in Arabic, Chinese, Indonesian or Spanish

but also essential cultural, historical and social perspectives. By studying
a language at Deakin, you will have the opportunity to go overseas and
study the language in the countries where it is spoken, gaining credit
towards your course at the same time. Our Diploma of Language is
suitable for students with no language experience, as well as those who
have previously studied the language, and native speakers. Students
study different units depending on their prior knowledge.

Creative and performing arts

Deakins creative arts courses offer you a range of skills in one discipline
(animation and motion capture, dance, drama, entertainment production,
film and television, photography, visual arts or visual communication design),
systematic exposure to collaborative possibilities between various art forms,
the experience of bringing art forms together in major projects, training
in creative arts enterprise and management, as well as a grounding in the
academic knowledge necessary to understand the arts and to create new
forms of art.

Criminology
Community services and police forces everywhere want well qualified
staff. Deakin provides its criminology students with a solid practical
understanding of policing, criminal justice, security and social process
issues, as well as skills in research and analysis to help deal with
increasingly complex work.

Humanities and social sciences

Studying the humanities and social sciences will result in you developing
and acquiring critical thinking skills, the competence to engage crossculturally, and the proficiency to analyse complex issues that require
multidisciplinary responses. You will gain discipline-based knowledge in
order to understand how societies function in local and global settings;
what forces and great events have shaped the modern world; and what
are the main factors shaping peoples lives in national and international
contexts today. Study areas include anthropology, Australian studies,
history, international relations, philosophy, politics and policy studies,
and sociology.

International studies
This course will enable you to develop a systematic understanding of
the international forces shaping government, business and community
life in contemporary Australia and the world. An important component
of the course is a genuine international study experience and the
opportunity to gain cross-cultural experience through studying in
Australia and taking part in study and/or internships in another country.
The course offers a global view on international relations, security and
cultural studies. You can choose to specialise in language studies (Arabic,
Chinese, Indonesian or Spanish), international relations, international
politics or Middle East studies.

Kalvin Leung
Bachelor of Commerce
Country of origin: Hong kong
Melbourne burwood Campus
Keen to develop a broad knowledge of business, Kalvin chose
Deakin because of its diverse teaching style. 'I wanted to gain an
overall knowledge of business while remaining able to focus my
learning. I think the Bachelor of Commerce does that really well
with its core units and multiple majors to select from.'
Kalvin says the course gave him a sound knowledge of
marketing, supply chain management and e-business
components. However, it was his own contribution to the
Faculty of Business and Law that was most valuable. 'At Deakin
I had the opportunity to contribute to the Faculty as a student
mentor team leader.'
'The Student Mentor Program offered at Deakin has significantly
helped me develop into the person I am today. I have acquired
many core skills through this program and many invaluable
experiences which I can convey to my future employer. Now, I
can say that I am proud to be a Deakin Graduate and that the

Tommy Tanzil
Bachelor of Information Technology (IT Security)
Country of origin: Indonesia
Melbourne Burwood Campus
Tommy arrived in Australia only three years ago and chose to
study at Deakin because he wanted to use technology and
personal knowledge to improve peoples lives, particularly in the
field of Information Technology. Tommys passion for IT runs in
the family, with three of his siblings also employed in the industry.
It is no surprise then that he was impressed with the online
facilities at Deakin, especially the Library and CloudDeakin.

The IT skills you will acquire throughout your studies at Deakin

are applicable in more than just the ICT sector and can open up
employment opportunities in just about any industry.
The Work-Integrated Learning Program gives you the opportunity to
complete an internship or paid industry-based learning placement and
gain credit towards your degree.
Practical experience is complemented by firstclass teaching in a
friendly environment, with accessible lecturers and small class sizes.

Looking back, Tommy says that only a small number of

universities offered specific courses in IT Security and Deakin has
a great reputation and helpful student support services. I studied
for a year at MIBT and then moved on to my bachelors degree.
Deakin is so well-organised and hard work pays off with high
employability when you graduate.
Tommy says that the support and knowledge his lecturers have
given him has been invaluable. The lecturers were helpful even
after I graduated and suggested jobs I could apply for. I'll soon
start work for Honeywell, a global technology leader in energy
efficiency, clean energy generation, security and safety, with
branches in more than 60 countries.'
Tommy says that beyond his degree, the Australian lifestyle and
multicultural environment also changed his life. He now wants
a future in Australia where he feels he can use his qualifications
and skills to 'make a difference and bring something special to the
world of IT security.'

Sport

Sport is a growing industry and with the increased

focus on healthy and active lifestyles, the need
for experts in this field has never been greater.
Ourcourses in sport are comprehensive and
diverse, enabling you to study exercise and sport
science, the business of sport, sport development,
health and physical education (teaching), and
engineering science (sports technology).
Why study sport at Deakin?
Deakins Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science was the first
nationally accredited undergraduate exercise and sport science
program in Victoria. Accreditation was awarded by Exercise and
Sports Science Australia (ESSA) in 2009.
Deakin is the highest ranked Australian University in the first-ever
international rankings guide for postgraduate sport management courses.

Carlos Drechsler
Bachelor of Bachelor of Business (Sport
Management)
Country of origin: Argentina
Melbourne Burwood Campus
Football is a passion for Carlos Drechsler. Graduating from
the Bachelor of Business (Sport Management) last year, he
has followed his passion to go into football coaching and
management. 'After being a professional soccer player and then
moving to coaching and management, I was looking for a specific,
high-level education to develop the required skill set and boost
my career opportunities. This course and its high standard of
education is not available in my home country.'
Carlos says he became interested in the Sport Management
course because of its reputation and references, and how it was
organised for content and structure. Deakins Sport Management
courses have been ranked No. 1 in Australia and No. 11 in the
world by Sport Business International Postgraduate Sports Course
Guide (2012). 'The teaching staff always showed genuine interest
and desire to help, assist, clear doubts, discuss and debate topics,
as well as advise on issues that didnt necessarily concern them
directly. They were always responsive and of valuable assistance,'
says Carlos.
Overall, he found the university experience very positive:
'Choosing to leave home to come to Deakin was a difficult decision,
but it proved successful. The whole experience in both education
and life has changed many of my views and ideas for the better,
making me a more capable professional.'

All of Deakins sport courses offer you the opportunity to gain

handson industry experience as part of your degree, in a variety
of environments, such as AFL and NRL football clubs, the Australian
Weightlifting Federation, Surf Life Saving Australia, the Victorian
Institute of Sport and Bicycle Victoria, to name a few.
Our teaching and research staff are experts in their respective fields, with
broad international links and experiences. For example, Chair in Sport
Management, Professor David Shilbury, was awarded the 2011 North
American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) Earl F Zeigler Award.
Career outcomes in the sporting industry are exciting, diverse and
ever increasing, with the growing emphasis on physical activity
and participation in sport. Careers exist in fitness, recreation,
health, rehabilitation, community and performance sport, sports
administration and management, education and research.

Exercise and sport science

The Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science looks at ways to apply skills
to develop physical capacities and behaviours of exercise participants,
athletes and teams through training, coaching and advice. You will gain
theoretical and applied skills in the sport sciences and allied fields, and
examine the biological, social and behavioural bases of exercise science,
sport science, sport coaching, human movement and sports nutrition.

Sport development
The Bachelor of Sport Development at Deakin is distinctive due to its
unique focus on three study streams sport management and marketing,
exercise and sport science, and coaching. This specialist field is concerned
with increasing participation in sport, and with the development of
pathways to attract, retain and nurture sports participants.

Sport management
Sport management is primarily concerned with managing organisations
conducting sporting competitions, major events and community
programs that encourage participation in sport. Sport management
also relates to the management of organisations supporting sporting
competitions such as sporting goods manufacturers and retailers,
sportspromoters, facility designers, player managers and agents.

Fees and
costs explained
2015 tuition fees for undergraduate full-degree
international students
Your tuition fees are based on the units in which you are enrolled. This
means you pay fees for the units you choose in your course, rather than
paying a fixed course price. Different units have different fees, which
are based on how much each unit costs the University to provide. For
example, units which require laboratories or special equipment may cost
more than units which do not.

Note for Nursing students

Commencing international students enrolling in undergraduate Nursing
courses are required to pay an annual clinical fee component in addition
to the base cost of the course. Please refer to the table below:

offer acceptance stage for visa length cover. The amount payable will be
included in your Offer Letter. Students should be aware that they may be
required to meet additional expenses for textbooks, fieldwork costs and
excess Deakin internet usage charges.

2015 undergraduate unit fees

The table to the right shows the 2015 international student
undergraduate coursework tuition fees per credit point for each of the
various discipline clusters at Deakin.
Before you can calculate the total cost of your units in 2015, find out
which units you will study in your course, what clusters they belong to
and therefore the rate per credit point which will be charged.
Note that a normal full-time study load is eight units per year.
The actual cost of your year of study is determined when you enrol
based on the units you have chosen. Your offer letter only shows
indicative fees not the actual cost of your study. When you pay your first
trimester indicative fee, it will be credited to your enrolment. If there
is a difference between your initial course payment and the actual fee
liability after enrolment, you will need to pay any outstanding amount.
Over-payments will be credited to your next trimester fees.
The indicative fee for one trimester as listed on your Offer Letter must be
paid before a CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment) can be issued.

Campus learning students

Please note: The above indicative fees are in Australian dollars and are correct as of
February 2014 and are subject to change. For international students commencing in
2015, it is expected that fees per credit point will increase by no more than seven per
cent per year.

As well as tuition fees, students pay:

Examples of how to calculate your fees

OSHC for the full duration of their visa,

a once-only, non-refundable application fee of A$55*.

Millie has enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce and chooses six units

from the Accounting, Economics, Commerce, Administration cluster
and two units from Humanities. Her annual tuition fee in 2015 will be:
6 x A$2754 plus 2 x A$2447 = A$24 418.
Eduardo intends to complete a Bachelor of Arts, with all units from
the Foreign Languages, Visual and Performing Arts cluster. His annual
tuition fee in 2015 will be: 8 x A$2922 = A$23 376.
Anna has decided to study a Bachelor of Information Technology (Games
Design and Development). In her first year, she will complete seven units
in the Computing cluster, along with one elective taken from the Public
Relations cluster. Her annual tuition fee in 2015 will be:
7 x A$2917 plus 1 x A$2564 = A$22 983.

Cloud (online) students

As well as tuition fees, students pay:
a once-only, non-refundable application fee of A$55*.
* Students who apply online do not have to pay the application fee.

Note for all students

or the cost of optional, extracurricular or recreational activities such as
membership of fitness clubs or gyms, participation in sport and so on.
