The optical fiber coupler switch is a main component in optical networking system. It plays
important key as a passive device in the integrated optical circuit that can be used to combine,
to split, to rout, and to switch the optical signals. The optical signals propagating in the fiber
coupler will experience some power losses which are mainly caused by the geometrical
structure of coupling region. Since the performance of fiber coupler is determined by the
optical losses, it can be minimized by determining the coupling parameters of the coupling
region such as coupling coefficient, coupling ratio, refractive index, and also fabrication
parameters such as fusion temperature and pulling speed. The coupling parameters are
determined by modeling the fiber coupler using Optiwave software. This will design based on
point of view with exact size in OptiFiber and then the performance will be tested by
demonstrating the optical operation circuit. Theoretically, the coupling coefficient will be
determined by perturbation method using Bessel and Hankel functions. The optical switch
ON/OFF coupler then is set up by applying a direct current voltage to the coupling region.
Both experimental and theoretical methods are conducted and compared to produce a better
performance of optical switch. Finally, by fabricating the multi directional fiber coupler with
appropriate temperature, pulling speeds, coupling coefficient, coupling ratio, assuming no
power losses of the coupling region, so that those will be then obtained for a better use in
optical communication system.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
The development of optical fiber in network communication system has greatly expanded. It
has been used to carry the data, video, voice and to require wide bandwidth and big capacity.
In integrated optical signal processing, the optical fiber network requires junctions to split the
communication system. A fiber coupler is one of passive optical device component having
important role in optical circuit system. This component can be used in many applications in
launching signal such as splitting, combining, and switching optical signals (Ankiewicz,
1986) hence, it has interesting phenomena to be studied. In order to build the fiber coupler
component, this optical directional fiber coupler was usually fabricated using fusion
technique. For instance, two single mode fiber (SMF-28e), 1X2 is simply twisted together,
then both sides are pulled during fusion. The mechanism is stopped when the pre-set value of
coupling ratio is reached. However, this fabrication is concerned with a fixed fiber coupler.
In optical application, some networking system needs to branch its signal from a device to
another device with certain branch ratio (coupling ratio). In this case, the fiber coupler with
tunable coupling ratio is required. In 2003, the analysis of directional coupler electro-optic
switches using effective-index-based matrix method was reported (Arumugam, 2001). The
optical directional coupler switch was made by the diffusion of Titanium in Lithium Niobate
(Ti:LiNbO3) substrates and incorporation of suitable electrodes (Chen, 2006). In that study
the normalized mode profile was shown at different propagating distance of a direct current
Direct Current (DC) switch with uniform electrode.
The Breakdown voltage investigation of fusion SiO2optical coupler was also reported by
using Pockels effect model. The model is evaluated by using the coupling coefficient and the
changes in the refractive index. When there is an applied voltage to the coupler, polarization
of SiO2 material occurred. All the positive elements will be attracted and arranged directed to
the incident source (Danh, 1981). Here, the incident electric field is much larger than the total
electric field of the polarization phenomenon in the optical fiber. The coupling ratio
significantly depends on the refractive index change, the coupling coefficient, and the
separation between the fibers (Decusatis, 2006). In this paper, the breakdown voltage effect is
3
experimentally purposed to provide fiber coupler by reducing refractive indices with tunable
coupling ratio by applying DC voltage to the coupling region fiber coupler. The experimental
result will be then compared to the theoretical calculation.
Either coupling ratio or breakdown voltage has meet the requirement to switch the power
launched, the higher order of MXN fiber coupler is not considered yet for optical switch since
the ON/OFF mode still launches the minimum power wavelength for splitting. This is also
due to the higher applied voltage to breakdown the fiber coupler. Therefore, this problem is
necessary to advance and enhance the passive component system reliability and performance
for a better function of optical fiber coupler. The objective of this research proposal embarks
as follows:
1. To design, fabricate and operate multi ports optical fiber coupler by OptiWave
Software
2. To demonstrate multi ports optical fiber coupler using fusion and elongation method
3. To model Pockels effect and breakdown voltage of multi optical switch fiber coupler
4. To design, fabricate and operate multi optical switch fiber coupler by OptiWave
5. To demonstrate multi optical switch fiber coupler by direct current voltage
This proposal will contribute to have an efficient and effective performance of optical switch
fiber coupler where it can be used for various power source with multi ports optical switch.
Since 2006, development of fiber couplers has been greatly investigated in details not only
due to power losses but also due to kinds of design and operation to function fiber couplers.
To design, fabricate, operate and measure the performance of fiber coupler are uneasy. It is
high cost and few companies and universities concerned to this demonstration. One of
universities, which fabricate and operate several passive optical components, is Universiti
Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor, Malaysia. It is Advanced Photonics Science Institute
UTM has active collaboration to Physics Department, Faculty of Math and Natural Sciences,
University of Riau (UR), Pekanbaru Indonesia. In the last few years the collaboration is the
use of laboratory devices, machine as hardware and also software, the paper publications are
also highly consideration. This collaboration had produced good paper publication with
impact factor, patent filing production and also students completing their higher degree in
Master and Doctoral degree. Nowadays the official collaboration has been formulated in
umbrella of Momerandum of Understanding (MoU) between University of Riau and
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in the last two years. This is also implemented in a lower level
4
as a Letter of Intent (LoI) between Advanced Photonics Science Institute(UTM) and Physics
Department, Faculty of Math and Natural Sciences (UR). Both universities prepare good
researchers and has meeting periodically. UR is more liable for modeling and theoretical
consideration and UTM is responsible for equipment and devices.
By planning the progress of research, the output results will be communicated in International
conferences and reported in four papers with the impact factor journal. Hopefully, if the
product fulfills the needs of the market then it will be recorded to two patents filing to
external board indirectly or internal university board as a spin off company. Last but not
least, two degree students will be produced; one master and one doctoral student will be
involved in this research project.

LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1
An optical directional coupler is a great optical device, and it has been used for many
applications such as optical switches and tunable filters and device sensor in
telecommunication. It consists of two or more fibers joint in space by using twist-etching
methods, contacting by voltage method, and fusion method. The directional fiber coupler was
experimentally studied based on the energy exchange among guided modes (Yariv, 1973). He
also theoretically determined a coupling equation from unperturbed general wave equation. A
derivation of his general theory was followed by the application to the specific cases of
electro optic modulation, photo elastic and magneto-optic modulation, and optical filtering.
The different case study of directional fiber coupler was proposed by Nagata (2000). In this
study, the chemical properties of the coupling region are investigated. A Fourier Transform
Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) were used to analyze the
properties of silica glass fiber after it is coupled. This study also confirmed that at several
distances from the center region of the fiber coupler was slightly deteriorated, possibly
leading to lower stability due to humid condition. This problem was then covered until the
progress in the study of directional fiber was continued by Wu (Tzong-Lin & Hung-Jiun,
2004). The field of his study was concentrated upon the analysis of polarization
characteristics and its effect to the output power which is called Polarization Dependent Loss
(PDL) in the fiber coupler. The output powers were modeled as a function of heated length,
and it was also investigated for the various directions of polarization vector of light coming
into the input ports of the fiber coupler. The rigorous analysis of PDL was also proposed by
using Mueller's matrix method. This study summarized that PDL is gradually decreased as a
function of the coupled length.
The development of single mode fiber for fiber coupler imposes more intention when
(Saktioto et al., 2008) investigated partial power gradient of basic 1X2 fiber coupler. The
single mode directional fiber coupler was fabricated for the various coupling ratios in range
6
of 1% to 70% by heating the coupling region. The distribution of fusion temperature provided
by torch flame was also determined by modeling and experiment as slightly unstable.
Moreover, the coupling coefficient was exhibited as the comparison between the theoretical
reference and empirical equation from the experimental results. Saktioto (2010) also
presented that the power transmission in fundamental 1X2 fiber coupler was mainly
determined by the coupling coefficient. In addition, the change of refractive index was also
calculated from the coupling coefficient in the range of 0.6/mm to 0.9/mm.
The fabrication process to produce directional fiber couplers requires an advance technique
since it deals with small SMF having the diameter in micron size. In past two decades, (Danh
et al., 1981) proposed a method to fabricate optical fiber coupler namely twist-etching
method. This method successfully fused two single mode fibers by potting the coupling
region. The twisted-coupling region was solidified by filling a bottle and then two fibers were
positioned with certain index oil, and it was simplified with a liquid state potting material.
However, this technique still produces a fiber coupler with high insertion and exertion loss
about 20 dB. In 1987, Yokohama exhibits a new method to fabricate fiber coupler with better
performance compared to the previous works. The steps of this fabrication are started by
removing the fiber coating, followed by fiber setting at the connector and installed in the
workstation. The coupling region is then fused until the desired coupling ratio is reached.
The fabrication of directional fiber coupler was improved from a conventional to the
advanced technique in period of time. Fusion method was optimized by changing the plasma
source (McAtamney et al., 2005). The coupling region of two fibers was heated by utilizing
CO2 laser. Good performance of basic of 2X2 directional fiber coupler was obtained where
the coupling region is heated with a suitable fusion period. This method still has significant
limitation of experimental set up, because the process contaminates the structure of SiO2
silica fiber due to the chemical reaction between higher temperature CO2 laser and the silica
fiber. It may also change the properties of SiO2 fiber, instead of high-cost fabrication
technique.
Fabrication process of directional fiber coupler was changed in advanced by (Saktioto et al.,
2010). The basic of 2X2 directional fiber coupler was successfully fabricated by heating and
pulling the coupling region at 1350 C. Various coupling ratios in range of 1 % - 70 % were
obtained. The temperature distribution produced by torch flame was established by
experimental and theoretical model as slightly unstable plasma fusion.
7
However, the development of fiber coupler requires many input and output power, this is a
consequence of signal processing where the integrated optical system has demand to fulfill
the need of power splitting and distribution to application. Therefore MXN of fiber coupler is
a must to consider due to its capability to process many signal including optical switching.
Optical switch can be designed by changing the refractive index of Mach-Zehnder
Interferometer (MZI) waveguides. Singth (2010) designed an 1X2 optical switch based on
MZI by using Titanium in-diffusion Lithium Niobate (Ti:LiNbO3). The signal was switched
from waveguide 1 to the waveguide 2 by applying the dc voltage to the waveguide of MZI.
Difference optical switch was also designed which based on the ring resonator. In this study,
the ratio of power output is controlled by using mechanical process such as by changing the
distance between the linear waveguide and the ring resonator.
In last three years, the directional fiber coupler was used as an optical switch (Saktioto,
2010). The optical switch consists of 1X2 configuration that enables to switch optical power
from fiber 1 to fiber 2, whichwas successfully studied. Althoughit produces high optical
losses and high DC voltage, it can be investigated to be a better performance where the
coupling ratio can be modified in low electrical power. However, the design of optical switch
based on directional fiber coupler is a good option since the MZI design requires costly
fabrication process compare with use of the Single Mode Fiber Coupler. The multi optical
switch based on the directional fiber coupler is a very flexible device that can switch the
optical signal to the desired output ports with the tunable coupling ratio. This also a complete
set of devices that can match together as an efficient and effective performance of future
optical devices as an integrated function of multi ports optical switch.
2.2
The breakdown voltage investigation of fusion SiO2 optical fiber coupler was reported by
(Saktioto, Faridah Hanim, et al., 2010) using Pockels effect model. The model was evaluated
by using the coupling coefficient and the changes in the refractive index. When there is an
applied voltage to the coupling, a polarization of SiO2 material occurs. All the positive
elements will be attracted and arranged directed to the incident electric fields E(x,t) (Singh et
al., 2008).
Here, it can be said that the incident electric field is much larger than the total electric field of
polarization phenomenon in the optical fiber. When an external electric field is applied using
a suitable electrodes, the refractive index profile of the waveguides is varied due to electrooptic effect. This variation depends upon the type of electrodes used and on the relative
position of the electrodes. By considering linear electro optic or Pockels effect, the change of
refractive index can be mathematically expressed as follows (He & Liu, 1999).
n( , y,V )

(2.1)
Equation (2.1) describes that the changes of the refractive index is proportional with the
applied electric field at the coupling length and the fiber diameter. Since the applied voltage
is examined by using two electrodes with the distance of separation between them denoted as
x, the relationship between the electric field and the applied voltage is basically given by the
following Equation (Tipler & Mosca, 2007).
V
x
(2.2)
Equation (2.2) implies that the longer distance between the electrodes, the higher voltage is
required to induce the electric field at the coupling length. As given by Equation (2.1) and
Equation (2.2), it is possible to adjust the coupling ratio by applying dc voltage transversely
to the coupling length.

the power transfers between the fibers are the case where the coupling coefficient is much
smaller than the propagation constant. The Propagation constant and the coupling coefficient
