DURABLE STRUCTURES

Rehabilitation of
sewer networks

In 1991, a
European
directive leads to
an increase in
the construction
of sewerage and
wastewater
treatment plants

United Nations
declared the
necessity to
halve people
without access
to safe water
and adequate
sanitation

DS

In most
industrialized
countries, sewer
systems are
facing aging

Biodeterioration of cementitious materials in sewer

networks involved a succession of sulfur oxidizing
bacteria

cementitious surface and allowing other bacteria to
settle on

Culture media is agitated at 301C and varied by its

sulfur source:
Thiosulfate (S2O32-) 5 g L-1
Elemental sulfur (S0) 1 g L-1
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) 4 g L-1

Same amount of exchangeable electrons

These bacteria have a higher growth rate on

elemental sulfur

Cementitious matrix with higher level of sulfur

crystals deposited on the surface will promote them

OPC in sewer network will be more favorable to this

bacterium than CAC leading to higher level of
deterioration

DURABLE STRUCTURES

LNEC Lisbon 31 May - 1June 2012

LNE

An accelerated test mimicking sewer networks is required to

identify most durable materials
This test must use H2S due to its variable impact on materials

Some of the bacteria involved in the process of

biodeterioration use elemental sulfur as an energy source

An accelerated chamber is nowadays

operative and used by Ifsttar
